CINEMA TOOLS SOUND ROLL & AUDIO TC MISSING

HI:
I have a sequence from someone else cut on FCP. They imported ALE info before editing.
I used Create Master Clips to "decompose" it.
I used sync to Cinema Tools to create a new database just related to this sequence.
I can see metadata in various columns of the browser including Keycode and Sound Roll and Sound TC.
The metadata related to pix shows up in Cinema Tools correctly. (Keycode, TimeCode, Slate etc.)
HOWEVER: The Sound Roll and Audio TC is completely blank in Cinema Tools.
I am using latest version (at least for Tiger) of FCP etc.
Does anyone know why the Sound info is not carrying over?
I need to generate Audio EDLs to pull the original sound for Pro Tools reconform and mix prep.
Thanks

All:
Why isn't this a bug?
I have reviewed the manual repeatedly and I have tried different switches in the New Database dialog for the Synchronize to Cinema tools. I have tried creating New Databases with just a single item. Basically I have tried every permutation to see if the behavior changes in any way, without result.
Nothing successfully passes along the Sound Roll and Audio TC fields (clearly visible in the browser and in individual clips' item properties views), to Cinema Tools.
All the other FCP Browser Film fields show up in CT as follows:
In the Keycode view in CT: Slate, Lab Roll, Camera Roll, Keycode, Clip (ALL THERE.)
In the Video view in CT: Slate, Reel, Time Code, Clip (ALL THERE)
In the Ink Numbers view in CT: Slate, Lab Roll, Clip THERE (Daily Roll & Ink Number are blank because I have no metadata for them, so that's as expected)
BUT in the Sound view in CT: Slate & Clip THERE, *Sound Roll & TimeCode: MISSING!*
Many have viewed this query here and on the Cafe LA forum of the LAFCP users group and not one single response has been generated which if this were operator error I would have expected by now.
For the record: OS X 10.4.11; FCP V. 6.0.3; CT 4.0.1
Again, why isn't that a bug as opposed to my mistake?

  • Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine problem-24 vs. 23.98 + sound issue

    Hello again folks,
Trying to figure this all out, and thanks in advance for your input; this forum is amazing and has been invaluable!
I've been studying the FCP and CT pdf manuals and lots of links/threads here in the forum to get the proper workflow, have tried it all out, and ran into some problems:
Need to convert--sorry--REVERSE TELECINE--my captured DV 24p (captured at 29.97) footage into 23.98fps to edit in 23.98. Copied some media files so as not to ruin the originals, chose them from project bins, and sent them to CT using FCP'S "Tools>Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine" (super easy and feeling overconfident). When I checked the footage, two things were odd:
    1) My new frame rate was at "24" not "23.98", which I believe I want to be working in in order to achieve my desired finished product (I'm sure I read this in the forum and links, does it matter?), and
    2) for kicks, while there in Tools, I tried one clip with "Tools>Remove Advance Pulldown", which did result in the 23.98fps.
    3) about 6 seconds into the new 23.98fps clip the sound disappears (I checked and the original clips have good sound throughout).
Any thoughts out there on this. Should I be reversing telecine from within CT (by importing clips), and not from FCP's easy Tools>Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine.
Any links or thoughts to clarify will be received with great admiration and thanks!

We'll need some more details. Where is your footage coming from? Was it originally HDCAM and downconverted to DV? Was the audio recorded straight to tape or was it synced in post? Is it consistently one or two frames out of sync or does it drift out of sync? How was it digitized? If you open the clip in Cinema Tools and step through it frame by frame do you see any interlaced frames?
There are dozens of things that can go wrong with this sort of process, so it's important to get really detailed.

  • Sending Premiere Pro sequence to Pro Tools for automatic audio conforming

I’m looking to implement an online-offline workflow at my production company, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s feasible to send a sequence from Premiere Pro to Pro Tools with enough metadata to take advantage of Pro Tools’ automatic conforming feature.
Premiere Pro or Audition doesn't seem to have any kind of feature like this, so I’m turning to Pro Tools. Here’s a demonstration of the feature from Avid: http://youtu.be/Gz9e9LuIdXU
For color grading, we’re already sending XML from Premiere Pro into DaVinci Resolve, and DaVinci Resolve perfectly automatically conforms the offline proxies to online high-quality clips suitable for grading. I’m trying to accomplish the same thing with the audio clips to prepare a sequence for sound mixing. The offline proxies in a sequence contain only compressed stereo tracks, but online audio clips have all of the separate uncompressed tracks for each microphone.
My initial thought was that, before any offline editing occurs, I might, in the Premiere Pro Metadata panel, add the names of the sound rolls to all the offline proxies in the “Tape Name” field.
I’m wondering if that metadata for those clips in the Premiere Pro Project Panel are included in an EDL that would be exported out of Premiere Pro, so that Pro Tools would know how to correctly choose online audio clips.
I know EDLs contain timecode, and that seems like it would be sufficient for Pro Tools, if production only occurred within one day. However, if there are audio clips recorded on different days, at the same time of day, some audio clips in a sequence would have identical timecode, and Pro Tools wouldn’t know which clip to automatically conform. It seems like Pro Tools would choose which clip to conform by first looking at timecode, and then if there were multiple clips with the same timecode, it would resolve the conflict by identifying the specific sound roll. This is why it seems important to have the sound roll metadata included in the EDL out of Premiere Pro.
EdiLoad looks like software that might be able to batch update sound roll metadata for an EDL already exported out of Premiere, but I’m not sure.
    http://www.soundsinsync.com/products/ediload
Manually going through Pro Tools and assigning correct sound rolls in a picture-locked cut wouldn’t really be an improvement over manually conforming. If I have to go through a cut and locate online audio clips, I might as well just conform manually.
    So my questions are:
When exporting an EDL out of Premiere, does the EDL include “Tape Name” metadata for Pro Tools to read as a sound roll? If not, is there another format I could use that would make this round-trip feasible?
If not, does anyone have experience with EdiLoad? Would EdiLoad work to do what I'm trying to do?
Is there any other way to accomplish automatic conforming, or something else that I'm missing?

    See if this helps.

  • Film list in Cinema Tools from 25 telecine, edited in a DV PAL-24 sequence

Hello professionals out there in the binary world,
I am looking for 24/25/24 answer to my problem and going thru all the questions like mine with no answer is just depressing !!!
    Here is the problem:
We are editing on Final Cut Pro 4 with Cinematools 2.1
16mm shot at 24 FPS with a TC at 25fps to edit at 24fps in FCP 4
Sound recorded at 24FPS (Cantar)imported thru sebskytools...
We edited in a sequence DV PAL-24
    (24@25 not available on FCP4)
Sound SEEMS ok as I need everything at 24FPS (quicktime movie, omf and edl)
For the image, I need a cut list for the negative cutter, when I want to make it in FCP4, in the settings, it doesn't allow me to change the TC rate to 25, it's greyed out, I have no choice else than 24...EVEN if I logged the database saying it was a 25fps TC.
In the database it's ok but it's not available in the FCP film list settings.
    First weird thing..WHY ???
When the list is done, it says at the beginning and for all the clips used in the edit: "warning, the clip x does not have a telecine speed of 24FPS".... But the keycodes seems ok (same as my timeline)
    SECOND PROBLEM:
I also need to tape the movie on beta for that negative cutter and it should be at 25FPS, like the TC otherwise the time won't correspond...HOW ??? Is it possible ?
Thanks for any information you could give me to clear it up a little bet !
All that 24/25 is a little cloudy in my mind, I would be thrilled if someone could blow those clouds away !

    Final Cut Pro 4 / Cinema Tools 2.1   Mac OS X (10.3.1)

    Hi Marie
Cloudy.....its a pea souper. Below is a cut and paste of some of the answers I have given in other threads. Also, I would get FCP5 studio as it is much better at all this.
    Hi
This is the one area where avid beats FCP. 24fps Pal. I have now used FCP on a couple of PAL features and it is a bit of a pain. I also have the Apple pro support but most of this is all new to them.
Lets start with picture. As you know, you can either make tape/dvds that are the correct running length of the film and include a repeat frame or you can make them playing 4% fast with a pitch change but smooth pictures (1 frame film = 1 frame video). Most of the time, ie. when you are editing you will use the first method and live with the repeat frame. However, for VFX work and the NEG CUT or DI you will need to make 25 frame playouts.
The avid does this well but FCP is a pain.
One work around for the fast output is to export a QT of the cut and use cinema tools to conform it to 25fps. Some neg cutters or Digital labs will work to a QT, if they don't, then the 25fps QT can be imported into a new 25fps pal project so you can make a tape for the neg cutter which has the correct time code and you will have machine control. (Hint, I burn in 25fps TC when I make the QT). The edl will depend on your choice of film key number cut lists or a video edl. Key code lists work well but most neg cutters/labs dont like them. If you need an EDL then it should be made in the main 24@25 project but you need to set the edit code to 25fps before you make the edl. This is changed in the browser by going to TC RATE where it is set to 24@25 speed and right clicking. this gives you the option of changing the edit to 25 or 24 as well as 24@25. Most of the time while I cut, I have the edit set to 24fps not 24@25. Then I can see how long the show is running, how long a clip is etc.
Sound. Most people in the UK get rushes synched at the lab/tk house. They speed up the sound to match the speeded up picture. That blows the idea of an omf unless you are ok with the sound going through an analogue transfer which includes a speed change. If not, you will have to reconform from the original dats.
You must get flex files which will track the original location dat tapes and their time codes. These are used to in Cinema tools to make the batch capture list. When you want to make an edl at the end you will use EXPORT...CINEMA TOOLS AUDIO EDL.
Your audio post house may require a video tape with each reel having time code starting on the hour. That is very tricky and I tend to go back to my avid for that. You can do it by doing a crash record with the added frame and loading that back into a 25fps project. Then making tapes from there as you will now have machine control. Not pretty and quite time consuming. If they will work from QT files its easier.
I think you may have imported the audio which I haven't done in FCP yet. I will try BWAV import one day as they work well on the avid but have been told they don't work well on FCP. If they are working well for you then the omf route should be great. Let me know how you get on with audio.
I have managed to get through PAL features shot at 24 with FCP, but it sure is more work than on an avid, mostly for the assistant editors. However, I like cutting on FCP.

  • Convert 25fps to 24fps using Cinema tools or Compressor?

    Hello all,
I have a completed video file that is: 25fps, 1080p h264 video codec with a .mov container.
I will be converting this down to standard def and into 24fps for authoring onto a dvd
So what is the best program to use for the first step of converting the frame rate?
Compressor or cinema tools? What is the step by step process?
And the audio pitch, where/ how do you change it to +4.17 ??

The new file is not showing up anywhere. Here are the steps it allows me to take:
    1. open cinema tools in applications folder
    2. create new database
    3. Choose default database settings: Film standard 35mm 4p. Video tc rate: 24fps , sound tc rate: 24fps. telecine speed: 24
    4.name cinema tools database file
    5. two boxes available : the list viewer and the detail viewer
    6. file- open clip. selected the clip which pops up in the video streamer box with all options under the identify box Grayed out (the conform button and the reverse telecine button) except for "Enter into Database" button
    - Under the overhead menu the "Conform" option under "Clip" is always grayed out
    7. Enter into database. title as scene 1 and take 1.
    8. now more options are not grayed out. conform still is though. I change the TC Rate from 25 to 24 under the video section.
    9. Once selected the Save and Revert buttons are no longer grayed out. Clicked Save
    - those tow buttons than become grayed out once again and nothing happens. The confrom button is grayed out the entire time.
    - Under file the Batch Conform button is always available But I do not know what to do with it. When I select the file the box gives the option to conform to 24fps and I than push conform. It takes only a sencond but when I go back into the skipped folder where I selected the clip there is no new file created (just the original) so it seems like nothing happened.
In the folder where the video file is selected: A Skipped folder is created with it in there and there is also a conformed 24 folder but it is empty. There is also a conform.log file which will open apple script.

  • Audio Filter missing:  Internal Volume Stereo - corrupt project?

    Hi,
I am getting this error when I open my project. In addition, no media will play in the project either in the sequence window or the source window.
It all appears and will scrub (with no audio), but will not play.
I dug around a bit and I found that there is a known bug with audio from XML's and that is what I am using (convinced my client to migrate from FCP to Premiere - please don't tell me I made a mistake).
Everything worked brilliantly for a week, including the addition of audio filters, and then all of a sudden - bang. No more.
I have painstakingly deleted every audio filter and I am still getting this error. I have also tried a re-install.
Another oddity is that when I try to quit Premiere, it will not quit all the way without a force quit!
I'm running CC 2014 on a brand new mac pro.
    Desperate,
    dw

    Steve and Bill,
I follow your advice, but it did not solve the problem. It is true  that  problems began when I used ZOOM recorder at 98kHz/24 bit in my current project (I already changed ZOOM mode to 48kHz/16 bit), but could this be just a coincidence?
In the meantime I checked the rest of my 16 projects (.prel), which were fine before. To my surprise I found that although all of them were made using EXACTLY the same method, some of them are still OK, but most I can not Playback. The messages appearing are of three types:
    1. "Audio Filter missing: Internal Balance".
    2. "Audio Filter missing: Internal Volume Stereo".
    3. "This type of file is not supported or required codec is not installed".
In one case, when I opened a project the first time, the message was "This type of file is not supported or required codec is not installed", but when I opened it second time it said " Audio Filter missing:Internal Volume Stereo". It seems to be random.
Some projects can be opened, but when I try to Playback  there is no sound.
I am completly lost. Please help.

  • Where is Cinema Tools' functionality?

    Hi There,
I use Cinema Tools (a very old version) to routinely conform 23.976fps video to 24fps video. It won't run under Lion anymore, so I need a new solution. Now that Cinema Tools appears to be gone in FCPX, is there a function in FCPX that will conform video in the same way without re-rendering? Re-rendering can not happen. I'm looking for a direct feature port between Cinema Tools' "conform" command and the latest FC product.
Thanks for your help if you happen to know.

Normally you alter the speed of a clip to create a specific effect such as slo-mo or fast-mo.
Conform Speed is used quite differently.
Imagine you have a project shot at 25fps but you have some clips that were shot at 30fps.
You put the 30fps clips in the timeline and select Conform Speed.
This makes them play  at 25fps so they fit in with the other clips.
The motion will be slightly slower but will generally not be too noticeable.
The audio will also be slower but FCP X very cleverly keeps the pitch correct, so that once again it is not too obviously slowed down.
The Conform function works with any other combination of frame rates.

  • Cinema tools workflow

can't seem to get the cinema tools manual to open on the apple site. Does anyone have any other suggestions for information on good cinema toos-finalcut workflow literature?
    thanks

The cut frame (for negative cutting) will be correct for 23.98 or 24. The advantage of 24 is if you sync sound in Final Cut, you can bring sound it at it's captured rate.
If you edit at 23.98, you retain the slow down imposed in film to video transfer (telecine) and thus need to slow down your sound by the same amount (1/10th of 1 percent, or .1%) to sync.
Where there can be some adjustment of cut frames for negative cutting is if you edit at 29.97. This is because the cut frame could potentially contain information from 2 different film source frames.

  • Lost Sound / No Audio Device

I have a k7n415 Pro Board using on-board audio.  Updated NVIDIA drivers on Windows Update Site, then lost all sound.  Tried rolling back driver and still no sound.  Device  (NVIDIA NFORCE MCP Audio Processing Unit and Audio Codec Interface) shows in control panel/system/hardward with no conflicts.  However, sound and audio system devices in control panel says "no audio devices."
I also tried to go back a day using Windows Restore point, but got a message that Windows could not restore back to that point.
I'm stumped.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • I'm new - What exactly does cinema tools do?

Hello all! I'm very new to FCP and MAC for that matter.
I'm curious about my new software...What does cinema tools do?

Perhaps the least (i.e. never) used part of Final Cut Studio - for me at least! Cinema Tools is 'powerful database that tracks the relationship between your original film and sound with its digitized video counterpart'!
A good one-pager can be found below:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/cinematools.html
Hope you find more use for it that I (only checked in here to see what people are talking about for the app!).

In AE, select the clip and control click and choose interpret footage.  Choose the correct parameters and then output.  Kind of a pain.  You can also retime in compressor by setting the desired frame rate the the encoder panel:  video and then in frame controls setting the appropriate timing.
Studio X is a wse man and he's probably right, but I also ran your crash log thru digital rebellions's crash analyzer and this it what it says
    ProKit Framework
This crash seems to have been caused by the ProKit framework. A common cause for this crash is a mismatched framework version. Make sure you have the correct version of ProKit for your version of Cinema Tools.
If you upgraded your operating system, you may have still have older pro user interface elements installed instead of the ones compatible with your current OS. If this is the case, you will need to either update ProKit (if an update is available) or reinstall Final Cut Pro from scratch.
    Suggested Actions
Update Final Cut Studio and ProKit.
Remove Final Cut Studio and reinstall.

  • I cannot see the Vidoe displayed on the screen, only hear the sound.  I am missing a component? Compressor, etc. I just downloaded the latest version of Quicktime for Microsoft, please help.

I am not able to view my video taken with a memory card only the sound?  I am missing a component? Compressor, etc. I just downloaded the latest version of Quicktime for Microsoft, please help
I can see it on Windows Media? Need help on this.

It says SEDG 720X480 2:1 Mono.  Video came from Sd memory card taken with a Samsung Video Camera.
Strangely enough, as a FourCC, SEDG is defined as "MPEG-4 hardware and software codec used in Samsung digital video products." Not a Windows or Samsung camcorder user but THIS WEB PAGE may be of some assistance.
Also I will need to view a CD recorded by the same camera (DVD-RW) file extensions are VIDEO_RM.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,  SAMSUNG.IFO  So far these files don't open even with Windows Media.
I don't know what to do to be able to open up these files save them on my Hard drive and then be able to upload them to YouTube.  Any Ideas?
IFO files tell how the video content is segmented and where the video data is located. BUP files contain back-up IFO information. VOB files contain actual multipled audio/video data. A DVD formatted to play in a commercial DVD player normally contains a series of files named "VTS##_#.VOB" where ## refers to the "title" series and "_#" (where # is not a zero) refers to the order in which the video title file data is played.
Again, I am neither a Windows user nor an athority on Samsung VIDEO_RM folder structures. However, if your disc contains both a VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS folder, then I would normally assume the VIDEO_RM folder is present for legacy purposes and/or to provide information about the refording device while the VIDEO_TS folder actually contains the video object (VOB) file data. In any case, as I am not familiar with what software is available for muxed MPEG-2/AC3 editing/conversion on a Windows platform, I would try viewing the VOB files in an application like MPEG Streamclip (free). If you can play the Audio and video content (be sure to read the MPEG Streamclip requirements regarding codec installation), then you can edit (merge and/or trim) the raw data and convert it to a format compatible for YouTube uploading. (I.e., MPEG Streamclip is commonly used on the Mac for this type of work flow and the app is also available for Windows use.)

  • Replacement for Apple Cinema Tools to batch conform for overcrank?

Apologies if I am asking this question in the wrong forum.  And If I am, perhaps you could refer me to the right place,.
I use it to batch conform 60 fps (shot on my 7D) to other frame rates (30, 24 etc) to achieve smooth slow motion.
I know that there are ways to conform clips one-at-a-time in After Effects.
But I am seeking a simple one-step batch conform tool that will convert like Cinema Tools.
I also tried Red-Giant grinder, however it does not recognise the files coming out of my GoPro Hereo 3+.
Is there a way to do this with Adobe's products?
    Thanks.

This forum is for supporting people who have issues downloading and installing Adobe software.  It sounds like you are looking for help with an application, and since you mention After Effects, maybe that would be a better place to start.  After Effects

  • TRIED EVERYTHING/NO LUCK with Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools 29.97 to 24p

I read an article that was on Ken Stones site. It said that, basically you CAN'T
take a clip that is at 29.97 and has 3:2 pulldown in it, and get it to actual 24 progressive frames? Is this true? Has ANYONE out there actually removed pulldown CORRECTLY with footage shot at 24, then transferred to 29.97?
I've tried all options with Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine, and I always wind up with some interlacing.
My QT clip has a 3:2 cadence, one can frame through it and see this.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone know a procedure that can get me to 24 progressive frames. Is there a 3rd party piece of software out there?
    Any relies appreciated.
    G5 2.3 early   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Cinema Tools V 3.1.1
    G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   Cinema Tools V3.1.1 QT V7.1.2 FCP V5.1.1

Well then, that is your problem. Those aren't reverse telecin-able. What are reversable are DV tapes that you captured at 29.97...in the DV/NTSC codec.
Are you working with Digital Intermediates? Or footage telecined to tape?
Typical Telecine to Tape workflow is:
    Telecine to DVCAM
Lab provides DVCAM and Flex file to you.
Open Cinema Tools. Import Flex file and export batch Capture list.
Import batch capture list into FCP.
    Batch Capture the DV footage.
Reverse telecine the footage with Cinema Tools.
    Edit.
What exactly are you doing? Where did these files come from? What is your workflow?
