Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS, eyetv, underpowered usb2
I have a Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS which EyeTv (latest version). EyeTv says it needs to be plugged into a usb2 port. The device is plugged into a usb2 port (on the back of the iMac).
It used to work fine on OS 10.4 right upto 10.4.8 (or thereabouts). 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 were flakey (had to restart, turn the Mac off for 10 mins, swap usb plugs round etc). 10.4.11 was fine. I'm running 10.5.1 now and the problem is back. I'm thinking that this might have something to do with the the device not getting enough power.
Saw elsewhere a fix reinstalling IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
(http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=333564). Haven't tried this yet-does anyone have any thoughts on my problem?
It turned out that my Cinergy stick is defect and needs to be replaced
I get the annoying USB2 message every time I reboot and the same thing happens when I unpluck the Cynergy from the bus for a short time. In my case the only way to get it back to life is to heat up the unplugged stick with a hair drier and then plug it back on the usb-bus. With that procedure everything works fine again unless I don't quit EyeTV, unplug the stick or shutdown/reboot.

TerraTec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS FM - no more linux support ?
Hi,
I bought this USB tuner : TerraTec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS FM
flo ~/src/firmware $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 014: ID 0ccd:0072 TerraTec Electronic GmbH
The old driver support for 2.6.30 has been discontinued : http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26418
I tried to compile suggested v4l-dvb drivers from aur, and also from mercurial version
hg clone http://mcentral.de/hg/~mrec/em28xx-new
sh build.sh build && sudo sh build.sh install
Modules em28xx, em28xx-dvb, em28xx-alsa are correctly created.
I also installed the suggested firmware for XC3028 as suggested here.
But when I plug my device I get this :
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 13
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
and nothing else. Not device created. It is not recognized.
I tried to load the modules before plugging-in the device, with no more success, and after restarting neither.
Does someone uses this Tuner and made it work ?
Last edited by florut (2009-11-04 10:48:24)Hi GIussepe,
Thanks for care. I actually tried to add the option card=XX (I tried many of them) but it did not work. I think card=55 does not work because Terratec hybrid XS (card 55) uses em2882 and 0ccd:0072 uses em2883.
I tried to hack using em28xx-new card mappings but it did'n work - i lack competences fort this I think.
I had some [maybe] good news on the mailing lists (which I finally manage to use!!) here.
If anyhow you get further information please let me know here!
[edit]
By the way : to use modprobe em28xx card=XX, should I do it the card unplugged and then plug it or should I do it the card plugged ?

Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS vs Elgato EyeTv 250 plus
Can anyone tell the difference in performance of those two. I have started to digitise my old VHS tapes and was wondering which will make it better.
Thank you -
New Wired Keyboard USB 2.0 underpowered.
I recently bought one of Apples alluminum wired keyboards, i dont have any troubles with it at all other than the usb 2.0 ports on the side. I attempted to plug my USB key into the port and an error message came up saying that the port is underpowered and that i should plug in my usb key to a power sorce, though it cleary has no wa of doing so. I tried the other side of the keyboard and recived the same error messge, any ideas? I do have a bunch of things plugged into my computer though hardley any of them were in use and all are self powered.
I am at work right now where I am working on a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5, connected to a 20" apple cinema display. I have my plastic (white) apple USB keyborad connected through the displays powered USB ports, when I try to connect my flash drive to the keyboards ports it gives me the low voltage warning. However if I plug the same flash drive into the back of the display it works flawlessly. FOr this reason I would assume that your keyboard, just doesnt carry eough juice to power the flash drive, a solution to this would be to purchase yourself a self powered usb 2.0 hub and connect this to the keyboards usb port, or to the computer itself.

How to use DVB on ArchLinux (with an em28xx chip)?
Hi there,
I'm trying to figure out how to use my Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS on ArchLinux. It should use the em2880 chip.
I think that the correct kernel modules are already bundled with the latest kernel version:

So it seems that the device has been recognized.. I downloaded the firmwares from http://konstantin.filtschew.de/v4l-firmware/ (the v2, since it is the 0ccd:005e version). I've also extracted the xc3028-v27.fw from the windows drivers using extract_xc3028.pl, since dmesg was complaining for the missing file.
However, Kaffeine doesn't recognize the DVB device, and I can't get any other player to work with it.
Is the kernel-bundled em28xx module broken for this device? I remember that I could make this USB dongle work some months ago in an Ubuntu setup, compiling the v4l from sources - do you think that this is required? I see many people can't compile it with the latest kernels.. and don't know exactly where to start.
Any help would be very appreciated.. thank you
CosmaAnybody can explain me what's the difference between /dev/video* and /dev/adapter*/* ?
I tried to cat my /dev/video1 (sometimes, plugging out and in the adapter, it gets assigned to video1) and some weird stuff is actually received so I decided to try a frequency scan.. I prepared the frequency file for my local muxes, installed the linuxtv-dvb-apps package, and tried to scan:
bash-3.2# scan ./it-Roma
scanning ./it-Roma
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
main:2247: FATAL: failed to open '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0': 2 No such file or directory
(also triend to play with the -f, -d and -a options to switch on adapter1, demux1 and frontend1)
Now, those devices was not created at all in my system.. isn't v4l supposed to create them, once recognized the dvb device? -
10.6.8 update downgrades USB
I have just updateded my MacMini Server to 10.6.8 and this seems to have downgraded my USB ports to 1.1.
This is according to Elgato EyeTV which no longer recognizes my EyeTV Hybrid. I get a dialogue advising that my Hybrid is plugged into a USB 1.1 port and that to operate it must be connected to a USB 2 port. Any clues to what the problem is, or has my USB really been knackered by the update? That happened to me too.
I have a Terratec Cinergy XS that worked perfectly under 10.6.7 (and still does, on my other Mac).
Upgrading to 10.6.8 gave me the same exact problem with EyeTV.
There's something in the new IOUSBFamily.kext release that causes this problem (googling around I saw that 10.6.8 gave many USB problems to the "hackintosh" world too).
I've experienced that if I unplug and replug the USB receiver, EyeTV recognizes the device properly connected and works flawlessly (at least until the next restart); the problem is I cannot schedule unattended next-day video recordings as EyeTV will give the same problem at next Mac restart.
You could try (as "hackintoshist" do) to downgrade the IOUSBFamily.kext to the 10.6.7's one, this should fix the problem; I have not tried this yet. -
Ipod Classic will no longer connect to car deck's usb
I updated my ipod in itunes and now my car's usb deck will not recognize the ipod. It had been working for years without a problem. I emailed kenwood and they said apple pushed out an update that is causing compatibility issues with car decks. They suggested a "soft reset" which did nothing. Kenwood told me to contact Apple and Apple wants me to pay for support. Guess I'll surf around this forum till I find a way to revert back to an older version of the ipod software.
Here's the thread from kenwood:
Thank you for contacting Kenwood USA Corporation. We value you as a Kenwood customer and appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance.
I understand you are having an issue with playing back your Ipod. If you recently updated your Ipod to the newer iOS4 software version we recommend attempting to soft reset the Ipod and attempt reconnecting to your head unit. The available updates from Apple have caused some issues with connectivity. For information on resetting your Ipod we recommend visiting www.apple.com.
Please feel free to contact us again with any additional questions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Andy Lapteff:)Read this Apple Support Article on Restoring iPod.
It is on step 6.
Restore would reformat your iPod Hardisk, if it is still in good condition, but some iPod Hardisk may be damage, due to abuse and misuse, so the Restore would fail.
For a successful Restore, I would also suggest that
Disconnect all other USB devices
Use the USB2.0 port
Do not use any USB Hub. -
Adding USB 2.0 ports to a Mac Pro 2008
Hi,
I love my Mac Pro 2008! Great machine, awesome performance, but I need more ports Who needs only three USB ports in the back, that's a joke!
Anyways, I just bought 2 StarTech 6-port USB 2.0 PCI cards from an online vendor, but quickly found out that it didn't fit my Mac. The description of the card even says it is compatible with Mac OS X. I suspect that Apple have changed the PCI slots for something else in the Mac Pro 2008. What are they and can we buy USB card that fit those slots? If so where? I am desperate for more ports. You may have stumbled upon or checked some of the support pages?
http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
- which has a link to an article titled "about your PCI Express slots"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304122
Specs 2008: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP11:
PCI Express expansion7
Three open full-length PCI Express expansion slots
One PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot
Two PCI Express x4 slots
And of course support for up to four PCI Express video cards; Fibre Channel; Mac Pro RAID.
You could install a powered USB hub, or FW/USB2, as long as you have free slots for more. I have FW800, a 1x Sonnet Tempo (couple storage drives), and a 4x Tempo (multiple RAID sets; Port Multiplier card and multi-drive enclosures and 4 channels). -
External Hard Drive (USB3.0) only works through USB2.0 hub
For quite a while now some of my external hard drives have not worked when directly plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 running 10.8.5). They work perfectly when plugged into a USB hub and then into the macbook but not directly to the mac. Standard small USB flash drives work fine straight in to the macbook, the real problem appears to be USB 3.0 hard drives. These will not show up on desktop or disk utility unless I plug them in via a USB hub (which is USB2.0). The hard drive format doesn't seem to be important, currently my Mac OS Extended Time Machine backup HD is only working through USB hub, and my MyPassport WD external drive is NTFS and hasn't worked directly into the Mac for a while now.
Normally this is not a big issue, but when I am on the go it is useless to carry a USB hub around along with a MyPassport hard drive! In addition, there are times, such as when backing up, that I want the speeds offered by USB3.0 from my macbook to my hard drive.
What could be the problem? I run NTFS for Mac OSX, not sure if that would cause an issue with the direct connection.
Please help, this one is grinding my gears!
ThanksWD Black 2TB back in summer sold for about $179 and excellent choice.
Very important as to what controller you get and what it supports, besides Mac Pro 2010, 64-bit mode drivers.
With 4 drives you may or may not want a card+case that is Port Multiplier.
To use 4 drives you may want 4-port SATA.
The ideal might be two PCIe cards and two cases, so your data and backup are not on same controller and case. Or not.
avoid Port Multiplication

I'd go with 1.5TB models throughout: replace the 2 x 500GB which sound older and 2007 era? setup 3 x 1.5TB if you think you want 1.5-1.8TB for active projects on your internal drives (3 drive array)

One of my usb ports is dead, dv6-6070ee
i have purchased my laptop about 2 months ago, suddenly one of the usb ports is no longer working
the usb port is a USB2.0 , the other one is working and the USB 3.0 x 2 are working too
it doesnt work in windows not even at boot, my logitech mouse has led lights on them when its plugged in a working usb on booting and bios setup it works, when plugged in the dead usb port its no longer working, i tried 3 flash drives also failed
i tried to boot from flah drive instead of hard disk it also failed when flash drive is put in the dead port
i cant locate exactly when the problem happened, but im suspecting when i updated my bios to F.1A, which is listed i downloads section of my laptop
i reinstalled the update but its still dead
so any ideas on how to resolve the problemHi,
It sounds like a Hardware issue, so as you're still under warranty, you will need to contact HP and arrange to have the notebook repaired.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

K7T Turbo2 - how do I tell BIOS to boot from USB?
I have an old K7T Turbo2 system, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it. I guess that's my first question - am I going to run into any nasty problems running W7 on this board, other than RAM limitations? I have a version of "Tiny7" (which installs from CD-ROM) installed already and it seems fine, but I'd rather run a fuller non-pirated OS, and that means installing from a DVD/iso. I don't have a DVD drive installed and it would be a bit of a pain to acquire one, so I'm hoping to boot from USB to winstall W7.
I have a PCI USB2.0 card installed in the system, which seems to work fine. I've set the BIOS to boot from USB-FDD (but I've also tried USB-CDROM and USB-ZIP). I have BIOS 3.6. I've tried booting from the PCI USB2.0 hub (will that ever work or does the BIOS not recognize it?) and from the regular USB1 port on the mobo (but my USB flash drive is USB2).
Is there something else I need to do in the BIOS to get this to work? Will it never work no matter what I do?
I read somewhere about a BIOS setting to "enable legacy USB support" but can't see anything like that in my BIOS settings.
Any suggestions? (thanks in advance)If there is no option to boot from USB-HDD then it may never work.
Long shot I know, but what if you connect your USB drive, then power on your system, and press F11 when the logo/POST screen appears, does the drive show in the Boot Menu that appears?

Really? DVD drives are very common, and cheap as chips! You can pick up a brand new DVD writer, for the price of a (good) DVD movie.

[SOLVED]How exactly are USB drives mounted?
When I plug in a USB drive, Cinnamon brings up the device in Nemo so I can see its files. The location it's mounted at is /run/media/<username>/<long string I assume to be a UUID>/. How is it that I can mount it again at another directory and use it from there? Also, when I unmount it from the second directory, is it already safe to remove it or do I need to unmount it from the first one as well?

That's the way I had it on my 8.04. I remember having to set that myself though.
xtraroot wrote:If it's mounted on more than one place, you'd have to unmount it in those places if you've done file transfers and want to make sure it's safe to remove. You only mentioned one place that it's mounted though?
I had it mounted at that default location and then I had mounted it onto ~/mnt (I recreated /mnt in my home directory)

I never configured my system to do that. When I used Arch and XFCE, I don't remember USB drives being automatically mounted. I had to do it myself. Cinnamon apparently does it automatically. What I wanted to know was why, if it does it automatically, does mount not give me an error about trying to mount the same partition again in a different place.
Thanks for your answers everybody. -
Usb 3.0 harddisk not accessible via usb 3.0 port
Hey guys,
When I connect my iomega usb drive to my usb2 port, it works fine. However – though it used to work before – when I connect it to my usb 3.0 port I get the following errors:

USB Keyboard module reset issues [SOLVED]
Hi,
Im on a fresh install of Arch, and had none of these problems on the exact same setup one day ago.
Basically my USB keyboard outputs a message to the console/dmesg every second saying: "usb 1-1.4: reset full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5"
If i "rmmod ehci_hcd" then the problem stops, but this reverts my devices to USB 1.1 mode, as soon as I "modprobe ehci_hcd" again the problem persists.
Anyone got any ideas of the causes/fixes for this issue?
Ive tried moving it to a different usb port, makes no difference.
This is the latest kernel on x86_64, and I get the same problem on the Arch live/install CD. My USB keyboard has a usb2.0 hub in it as well, but on a fully up to date system yesterday I didnt have this problem. This is just a clean reinstall (with LUKS encryption added).
Thanks
Jack

There are two problems to slow USB-performence.
1) Wrong configuration -> I assume that is not the case
2) Dumb Linux settings you can't change, because nobody tells you were to change them.
So the usual problem is, that the USB-Stick is mounted as "write-through" and not "write-back". So reading from the USB-Stick is cached, while the writing is not!!! Cache is a technique to speed things up, by not doing them in the order they appear. Especially with small files, there is no alternative. That is why modern harddisk have 8 or 16 MB cache on board. This way preformence of read/write files of size 0,005 or 0010 MB stays acceptable. USB-Sticks don't have an extra cache. The computer is supposed to take care of that.
Linux mounts USB-Sticks as "write-through", so with no caching in the writepart. So if you write many very small files, you can make a coffee break. Advantage is you can take out the stick after writing finishes without having to fear lose of data. With "write-back" you only know if the copy operation finished, that the data made it into the cache. To be sure, that the data also makes it onto the USB-Stick you need to unmount the USB-Stick.
Now everybody understands the problem. The big distributions prefer less speed rather than to have complains of Newbies that Linux corrupted their data - while the truth was, that those Newbies took out the USB-Stick without unmounting it.
So far so good, if those LINUX Expert would have left an easy accessable swith to change the "cache write policy", as windows does.
SO TO ALL THOSE LINUX EXPERT, PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO TO CHANGE THE CACHE POLICY FROM WRITE-THROUGH TO WRITE-BACK. PLEEEEEEEEASE.

Hello,
do you know how can we suppress USB disk error in /var/adm/messages?:
1) First we had these kind of errors in messages:
Nov 10 02:00:55 server1 scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/usb@0,2/storage@2/disk@0,0 (sd2):
Our monitoring solution keeps an eye on any warnings on errors in messages file and reports false alarms in this case.
2) Then we tried to suppress this warning by disconnecting USB device:
server1-root:/export/home/root# cfgadm -c disconnect usb2/2
Disconnect the device: /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/usb@0,2:2
This operation will suspend activity on the USB device
Continue (yes/no)? yes
server1-root:/export/home/root# cfgadm -al

3) But now it reports another warning in messages log file:

What is trying to access USB? Is it USB controller or disk drive which is causing problems? How to completely disable this warning?
Thank youI don't think it is HW/DVD issue. We have 60+ servers with this problem - the same usb warnings in messages file.
