Cintiq performance on Macbook Pro vs. new Mac Pro

Has anyone used a Wacom Cintiq (I'm using the 20" model) on both a recent Macbook Pro (I've got a 2.4 mhz Santa Rosa 4gb ram) and one of the new 8 core Mac Pros?
I'm interested in the cursor lag in Photoshop CS3 and Painter X.
I realize there are a lot of variables and don't expect any kind of scientific comparison. Just wondering if anyone upgraded and was "Wowed!" by the difference or if there was just a slight improvement.

I have a Cintiq 21UX (since March 2006) on a Quad G5 2.5 with 16 gig and 160 gig scratch and use it from time to time on a 2.33 MacBook Pro with 4 gig.
I have no major problems with Painter X, you can pull it up with big enough files of course but for my use it works great with quad.
On a 10"x10" canvas at 300ppi I can't find any brush to cause it to lag.(give me a file size and ppi and I'll do what ever brush size or any other test you can think of)
Oh yeah, no lag problems at all with CS3.

  • What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

Surprisingly easy! Go into the Finder, then into the Photos Library. In there, there will be a file called your iPhoto Library. It holds all your photos, essentially a special type of folder. Using an external hard drive transfer it to the same location on your new Mac. Now, when you boot iPhoto on the new Mac, it will recognise it and you'll see all your photos instantly!
There's a really good video on it here...

  • Macbook pro versus new Mac pro for editing

    Hi there,
I have been using my Macbook pro to edit some video I shot on a Canon 5D MarkII. It can be slow...
I was contemplating getting a Mac Pro and tried to find some good info on speed difference between a Macbook pro and a Mac Pro. Obviously RAM, hard drive space will make a difference but I would like to get a general idea. I love the portability of my Macbook pro but could I dramatically increase speed in editing with a Mac Pro? Any good info or links with good info will help!

Are you storing your camera footage on the computer's internal system disk?
That will cause problems right away. Your internal drive has plenty to do running the operating system and applications. Asking it to also jump around reading HD footage is overload.
You should at the very least invest in an external FireWire 800 drive for your footage. Depending on your MBP model, you might also have an Express Card slot. This will enable you to use much faster eSATA drives with the appropriate adapter card.
The advantage of the Pro tower is that you can install up to 4 internal SATA drives (up to 8 with a special kit), PCIe cards, dedicated capture cards etc.

  • Adobe 11 won't update on either my Mac Book Pro or new Mac Pro (both Mavericks)

Trying to update Adobe After Effects on both my new Mac Pro and older Mac Book Pro. Both running Mavericks 10.9.4.
Oddly, After Effects 11.0 runs on my Mac Book, but won't open at all on the new Mac Pro.  When I try to update to 11.0.2, in both cases it says "Update Failed. ....This update does not apply to you."
    What else can I try?

I am currently also having the same issue with After Effects on my macbook pro and I am trying to install 11.0.4, but I keep getting an error.
My software is student and teacher license, which I got the fall of 2012. This is the only adobe program that will not open on my computer and every time I open adobe bridge and look at update it says the programs are up to date.
I also have tired uninstalling the after effects I currently have  on my computer but it won't let me do that either.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

  • Copy iTunes from win 7 pro to new Mac Pro?

Have all my work on my iPhone 5s. Do nothing but manually syncing on lates iTunes. What to copy iTunes to new Mac Pro so I can use my iPhone on either computer.
Laptop at work and desktop at home.
All store bought music on C drive in iTunes as it should be along with books etc. but about 8 gbs of my ripped music some mp3 some ACC all at 320 is on my internal drive.
First thought is change iTunes setting to CONSOLIDATE hoping D drive music will go into iTunes properly.
While I searched KB I came up flat. I like a clean organized computer. While I know windows vert well I am new to Mac pros (but not iPhones nor iOS 7)..
Any way I can do this cleanly. I can put a full backup of iTunes onto a USB hard drive I use for 3rd back up off pictures and iTunes
    Thank you

does anyone know how this can be done please?

  • Premiere Pro CC & New Mac Pro - Audio Line Out Issue

I'm having a few issues with the audio line out on the new Mac Pro. For some reason, Line Out locks into Premiere Pro. When I switch programs, the audio line out device stays locked to Premiere Pro and the only way to get other programs to be able to output audio when Premiere Pro is not current application, is to go into System Preferences > Sound and click onto an alternative output and then click back onto Line Out.
    Thanks,

  • Old Mac Pro vs New Mac Pro?

I just ordered a Mac Pro yesterday. I ordered the one with 2 x Quald Core Intel Xeon CPUs. Today I read that Apple "upgraded" their models and that I will most likely get a Mac Pro featuring only ONE Quad Core Xeon CPU. The price interestingly went up!
I get the impression that what I ordered was a BETTER computer with less memory/HD/Graphics than the new model.
Am I totally wrong here? If I am correct, I need to cancel my order ASAP and keep on using my iMac a while longer.
    Any advise Ladies and Gentlemen?

First confirm if they will automatically change your order, they might, depending on configuation. Or they may have to contact you due to change in price or something.
Hard to know without some real hands on.
I know that DDR3 + Nehalem = huge improvement in memory bandwidth.
But I see where the new low end 4-core maxes out at 8GB RAM.
http://www.barefeats.com has some early "ideas" of what to expect.
Clock for clock, Nehalem is more efficient and can under heavy use run two threads per core.
Personally, I am surprised at the cpu configurations offered.

  • Sell old mac pro for new mac pro?

Ok, so I have a mac pro, 3ghz quad, x1900xt, 4 gb ram. I figure I could sell this for at least 2799.
question is, will the base model (2.8 octo) be faster that my 3 ghz quad. I am not talking about the video card. But if I were encode a 5 minute video in quicktime, which would be faster, and by how much.
my quad has a higher clock speed, but not by much.
the 2.8 is octo, and has a higher front side bus.
Basically, would you sell a 3 ghz quad, to get the 2.8 ghz octo. I am willing to do it if i get the feedback saying there would be a noticeable difference. Let me know what you think

i also am thinking of doing it now, because I think if i wait i won't get as much off ebay. You should definetely do it, because you have the 2.66 quad, so you are definitely stepping up. I have the 3 ghz quad, so I don't know if i am stepping up. I think I will list my current 3 ghz quad on ebay tommorrow though. hopefully i can get at least 2799 for it.
well yes and no, since alot of the new MacPros probably havent shipped just yet....there is still of Quadcore stock out there, and youll be competing with alot of others doing the same thing, so it depends on timing and pricing.
also factoring in condition of the unit and accessories you can include to up the ante from the othe rsellers. maybe give it some time and see?
im in t he same position, i got my MacPro 2.66 and didnt realize it was already 9 months since they came out and i suspected some sort of revisions soon and couldnt refund it or anything as it was BTO w/ ATI
if you do do it soon, let me know how it goes. im just hesitant since im still liking Tiger, and alot of my stuff runs perfectly fine under tiger, i just dont want to regret having to focus on a whole new OS that still isnt patched things with alot of Programs/Apps.

  • Performance with the new Mac Pros?

I sold my old Mac Pro (first generation) a few months ago in anticipation of the new line-up. In the meantime, I purchased a i7 iMac and 12GB of RAM. This machine is faster than my old Mac for most Aperture operations (except disk-intensive stuff that I only do occasionally).
I am ready to purchase a "real" Mac, but I'm hesitating because the improvements just don't seem that great. I have two questions:
    1. Has anyone evaluated qualitative performance with the new ATI 5870 or 5770? Long ago, Aperture seemed pretty much GPU-constrained. I'm confused about whether that's the case anymore.
    2. Has anyone evaluated any of the new Mac Pro chips for general day-to-day use? I'm interested in processing through my images as quickly as possible, so the actual latency to demosaic and render from the raw originals (Canon 1-series) is the most important metric. The second thing is having reasonable performance for multiple brushed-in effect bricks.
I'm mostly curious if anyone has any experience to point to whether it's worth it -- disregarding the other advantages like expandability and nicer (matte) displays.
    Thanks.
    Ben

Thanks for writing. Please don't mind if I pick apart your statements.
"For an extra $200 the 5870 is a no brainer." I agree on a pure cost basis that it's not a hard decision. But I have a very quiet environment, and I understand this card can make a lot of noise. To pay money, end up with a louder machine, and on top of that realize no significant benefit would be a minor disaster.
So, the more interesting question is: has anyone actually used the 5870 and can compare it to previous cards? A 16-bit 60 megapixel image won't require even .5GB of VRAM if fully tiled into it, for example, so I have no ability, a priori, to prove to myself that it will matter. I guess I'm really hoping for real-world data. Perhaps you speak from this experience, Matthew? (I can't tell.)
Background work and exporting are helpful, but not as critical for my primary daily use. I know the CPU is also used for demosaicing or at least some subset of the render pipeline, because I have two computers that demonstrate vastly different render-from-raw response times with the same graphics card. Indeed, it is this lag that would be the most valuable of all for me to reduce. I want to be able to flip through a large shoot and see each image at 100% as instantaneously as possible. On my 2.8 i7 that process takes about 1 second on average (when Aperture doesn't get confused and mysteriously stop rendering 100% images).

Put the G4 into Target Disk Mode and open Migration Assistant on the new MBP. Your G4 needs to be running 10.5.8.

  • Suggestion for Apple: MacBooks as terminals for the new Mac Pro

Suggesting Apple to enable using MacBooks as terminals for the new Mac Pro if connecting through the thunderbolt.
I am planning to get a new Mac Pro this month and use it as a 'portable' workstation since it weighs only 5kg.
I am working on scienctific research which requires travels quite often.
I want to have a workstation with me when I'm off-site so that I can work without worrying about the network connection.
It would be great if I can use Macbook Air as a display, keyboard and touchpad for the Mac Pro.
I will be fully geared by taking a Mac Pro and a MacBook Air with me where ever I travel.

I don't know much about Thunderbold connections.
Especially how does it combine PICe and DisplayPort signal together.
I would like the MacBook serve as an external screen and an external PCIe video card to the Mac Pro, together with its touchpad and keyboard connected to the Mac Pro as an external USB keyboard and touchpad.
In this case, one may not even boot into the OS on the MacBook side, just need proper drivers in the Mac Pro side for the 'external PCIe video card', keyboard and touchpad.

If you can wait about a 3 months after 10.8 is released this summer and upon new hardware you should be in excellent shape to have not only a fastest latest machine, but a OS X version that all the bugs have been worked out. Plus the three free months of Apple hand holding while they figure out what they did wrong with the new OS version.
If you need a new machine now you'll have to get what you need obviously, but 10.8 should run on it just fine. However know that Apple tweaks things with more currently sellling hardware first, then later gets to the previous released models.
It's been my guestimation that your good for about two year old hardware with very recent OS X release, three years or older hardware you may want to reconsider sticking with the previous OS X version as your hardware is getting dated and likely has only a year left to go anyway (4 year average), so why bother mucking it up, slowing it down and having to buy all new/updated software and third party hardware because they won't make drivers for your new OS version?

  • New Mac Pro performance versus a Dual 1.8 ghz G5

I just wanted to give some feedback of my new Mac Pro experience and hopefully get some feedback about it.
I recently updated to from a 1.8 dual core G5 to a 3.0 dual quad core Intel machine. In "core" processing (burning from disk and encoding) is sustainably faster (from 30 mins to 10 mins when encoding). The biggest disappointment is just the day to day operation. It isn't faster. I wanted to see Photoshop, iTunes and other programs to just jump up when I launch them (they just take as long to load maybe a little faster) and other just basic mac processes to work really quickly but the speed of the interface is the same as it is on my powermac. It still is paging my hard drive and isn't loading all my data when I do searches (I probably need to leave it running over night to get the hard drive completely paged). I have had this weird fan issue that makes the fans ALOT louder than my powermac (have read many posts here about that issue). Also have been having weird midi issues where my fire wire speakers don't work when I put the computer to sleep and wake it and I have plug my headphones in multiple times before they will be recognized by the computer.
My intial feeling is that the operating system hasn't been fully built up around the mac pro as it is for the powermac. I feel that the powermac was more "integrated" with the Os.
I also have heard that the new version of the OS is supposed to make better use the core processers. Therefore making tasks like hard drive searches and program launching faster. My fear is that part of using the core processors is on software like Adobe to write code to use them.
I have been on the phone with Apple about the speaker issue. I think I'm just going to bring my speakers into a Apple Store and repeat my issue. I also want to see if my headphone port is messed up (because it takes the headphones but seems "loose").
Thanks for listening to my concerns.

Migration Assistant, we began to see a year ago, was causing most systems to run like molasses and sluggish. So that is #1. There is no way to really see the potential at all with 1GB of RAM and 2GB gets it at least off the starvation diet.
8GB (4 x 2? 8 x 1?) if you use large files (750MB and above) AND you then use the "enable VM Buffer plug-in" from Adobe.
If you were use to using a 750GB drive, that would also help explain why. if you hate launching... don't - just leave them up.... or boot off a RAID.
but be sure to set PS scratch to another drive than boot drive if possible.
When you stop seeing swap files and pageouts, then you know that you are a step further. Tiger or Leopard can still use available memory for cache or for virtual scratch space to some extent that also can improve performance... once running.
You'll want to reformat the 750GB drive to native GUID/GPL partition map from the PPC/APL it has.
I don't even keep /users on boot drive (its there, just in case a program thinks it needs to be there) but ~/ home is on 2nd drive or RAID, just to insure that the boot drive can do its thing and not get slowed down by also having to serve for other tasks and programs.
The new Seagate 7200.11 750/1000GB drive has better multi-user functionality, though the Hitachi seems to be faster overall, except... not all Hitachi models work well on Mac Pro (or didn't as I don't keep up). Which is why I have been using strictly WD Raptor and Caviar (RE/RE2 and SE16) for the last year, they seem to be okay (and some el cheapo MaxLine Pro based on price).
Today, 2 x 1GB costs a mere $139, while a year ago it would have set someone back $700-800.

  • Not getting optimal performance out of premiere Pro CC with New Mac Pro

I have just purchased a new mac pro- 8core 64gb of RAM, and D700 graphics cards. I say I'm not getting full optimized performance because my machine will not playback 4k footage at full resolution. Should it? I looked into the package contents of Premiere Pro and notive that the D700 graphics cards were not listed under supported cards. If I type those in will that fix the issue?

No it wont. No editing software out right now will play back 4K media such as Red at full resolution. The latency for processing the codecs is just to high right now. Redcine X Pro can with Red if you have the GPU accelerated Debayering version. Until that decoding is done on the GPU's in the editing applications, you wont see the full res playback most likely. I wouldn't expect the Red Debayering done at the GPU's in Adobe for a while since Red is still refining it.
