Circle Slash "Do Not Enter" on boot after iDefrag

I ran iDefrag last night because my MBP was running sooooo slow. I barely ever use it and it has 300 GB of free space. I used to use OnyX to optimise the disks on Snow Leopard but I didn't see that option in Lion. I let iDefrag run and went to sleep. This morning I woke up to the Do Not Enter sign and the spinning thing below it. I made sure I left it plugged in so I don't understand what happened.
How do I fix this and not lose my data?

Despite some software developers claims, Macs do not require defraging and therefore the cause of the system slow down will be found elsewhere. It sounds, unfortunately, that your HDD may have been ready to die and iDrag just put the final nail in it. Unless you can get it to mount by repairing it with something like DiskWarrior, then I would think, given that it sounds like you have no backup, that you may be in some trouble here. Do you have any form of backups?

  • My mac is not able to boot after internet recovery

Hi I Own an i mac27 inch which i bought in year 2011. Recently it showed some disc errors and got crashed with a blue screen. I was not able to boot it in a safe mode and had to remove my data via a thunderbolt cable. After removing the data i formatted the hard drive with mac format thinking that would remove the bad sectors. But I realized it wont even start up again in a recovery mode. So i tried to boot it via a bootable USB drive. Now When i press Command+R i get only two options (1. Bootable OSX Drive, 2.Internet connection) None of the options are of any help. Any suggestions??

    Hello nachi777,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post it looks like you are trying to reformat your hard drive, but are unable to boot into recovery.  Since you have a newer iMac, you should be able to boot to internet recovery.  Booting to internet recovery occurs automatically if your startup drive has an issue.  If you are seeing boot drive options when starting up, then you may just be holding down the option key on the keyboard.  Both options you do see to boot from, should be able to help in reformatting your hard drive.

  • 17" not getting past boot after complete restore from time machine

I have a 17" 2.5ghz mbp with 4gb of ram. Last week it would only boot up in safe mode and after running the apple hardware test it gave me the nvidia graphics card error code. I took Otto the apple store and they sent it in to have the logic board replaced. I got it back Friday working fine, but they had installed a clean install of osx. I used the time machine to restore my user settings but it did not restore my applications or photos. So I reformatted the HD with a snow leopard disc and once I had done that I plugged in my external HD with time machine on it and proceeded with doing a restore from my last restore point. Once that had finished and restarted it got stuck at the boot screen with the circle with the line through it. I restarted it in safe mode and everything is fine, I then ran the hardware test and nothing came up.
    Any ideas?

Just a thought... my husband's MBP 17" hard drive crashed last month. Personally, I think it was a lemon drive since DH never moved it from our home office -- and his desk's flat surface -- where he worked all the time. On the other hand, I have a MBP 13" that gets moved all over the house, stuffed into a case and carted out-of-town, and used by our kids! yet still tolerates the abuse nicely!! (I know, I just jinxed myself there, most likely!)
We bought both of our MBPs last summer, and OF COURSE when we took his to the Genius Bar to have them take a look, it was only TWO DAYS OUT OF WARRANTY! ARGH.... But!!!! Since it was still sooooo close to being in warranty, they graciously honored it and replaced the HD for free!!! Yay Apple! Now it's working beautifully!!
Interestingly... when I was first trouble-shooting his "circle/line only boot-up," I read in one forum that some of the 17" MBPs sold via retail from early to mid-2009, MIGHT have been sold with questionable HDs... hmm... but, Apple didn't find this out until complaints started coming in... I cannot find that particular forum now... argh again... and the Genius at the Bar said he had not heard of that happening... soooooooo..... no solid evidence here, but anecdotally, an interesting thought.....? Good luck!

  • Huge problem, not able to boot after shut down.

I just updated the Firmware 1.8 to eliminate the optical drive noise, thought my computer would restart but it said it wasn't necessary. So I continued using it, writing a document. I had Safari, Pages, Mail open-- I opened up PhotoBooth to take a picture of my brother and I and my computer stopped responding all together. Eventually I had to shut it down by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. Ever since then when I try to restart it- it will not move past the Apple logo screen with the spinning cog. I have tried to boot from a leopard install disc (holding down 'c') and it just keeps restarting. I've also tried to boot a Data Rescue program, and again it just keeps restarting- like it will not boot at all from the CD drive. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Just tried to boot in Safe Mode and it wouldn't. Also performed the fsck check until it said my hard drive was ok- and it is still performing the same actions. Thank you for the reply. Is there anything else you can think of?

  • Not able to boot after updating to 10.5.1

    Hi all,
Have been running 10.5 on an external disk having left Tiger on the internal.
After updating to 10.5.1 the system doesn't boot at all. I get the grey screen with the apple symbol and NO spinning "wheel". I have to re-boot from the install DVD to be able to change the start volume to 10.4.11. From Tiger I have tried to change the start-up volume to 10.5.1 again but still the same problem, in some cases it goes back and starts Tiger even if I set the volume to Leopard.
Re-installing 10.5 doesn't change anything, the older version behaves in the same way.
I suspect it must have something to do with booting sequence.
    Any suggestions ?????

If you're comfortable with opening things up you could take the drive out of its case and plug it into the ide cable inside the G4 along with your existing system drive. (Assuming this is a G4 tower)
To be on the safe side you could just swap it with your current internal disk and see if it boots as well.

  • [SOLVED] /home not mounted on boot after installing tp_smapi

Hi. After installing tp_smapi, my /home partition isn't mounted on boot any more.
I can log in as a normal user, but I am then left with a command line and thus need to mount /home manually and launch X/dwm with startx. The startup shell shows no error messages.
After I uninstall tp_smapi, X starts up automatically again and everything seems to work.
    Here's my fstab:
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 rw,noatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda4 UUID=9d976c9a-4fe2-4cc9-a8b9-c22c713149d7

    # /dev/sda3 UUID=a6153a96-b9ef-412f-a670-af6775275f15
    /dev/sda3 none swap defaults 0 0
I am dual-booting Arch with Windows XP on a Thinkpad X60s. A /mnt/home folder also exists. And, the error aside, tp_smapi seems to work nicely,
    Thanks for any help!

Okay, it works now (after creating /mnt/home anew and rebooting). However, I wonder why did tp_smapi touch my mount points in the first place?

  • Why can I not enter my CS6 after buying a new iMac?

I leased today an new iMac at the distributor shop adminsystems in Cologne. Mr. Heck, ther owner an the administrator for me wanted to migrate all the data and programms and applications tfrom the old Imac 21,5 " to the new iMac. That would be done by the number which was on the package CS 6 Education Software, I bought over the shop adminsystems im March 2013. After tipping the number you have send me a new number to confirm it. cause I had to switch the provider from 1&1 to all-inkl  relaunching my website, I lost the registration number, I can´t find it. It is payed and I am a teacher of the KISD in Cologen, you must have the confirmation of the administration bureau KISD Cologne Ubierring. Now, whenever I want to use CS6 Education Standard, the Mac asks me for the number. can you send the the number, cause everything is clear and correct payed.

I upgraded to the latest firmware and it won't reboot now. the power light just keeps blinking.

    Hello lcgrzy,
I recommend trying the following steps:
--Power off unit, remove power cable and re-seat all disks.  Then reconnect the power adapter to attempt to boot up.
--While powered off, swapped the disks to opposite bays. Then see if the unit fully boots after about 5 minutes.
--Try booting the unit one disk at a time to see if either disk will fully boot.
--Try booting the unit one disk at a time to see if the firmware on the unit seems to be ok.
--If the unit does not seem to boot after the above, please call lenovoEMC support.

  • "Do not enter" sign after iDefag finished

My wife's MacBook Pro (17") running 10.6.8 was sluggish so I ran iDefrag 2.1.1 successfully. It was still sluggish so I ran it again. (Both times restarting using the prompt in iDefrag.) The second time it successfully finished the defrag but when I restarted the MBP the Apple appeared at initial startup, the grey wheel spun for a bit and then another grey screen appeared with a grey "do not enter" symbol and the grey wheel spinning eternally. (The "do not enter" sign/symbol is a circle with the slash through it.)
I have booted her MBP as a target disk connected to my MBP (also a 17" running 10.6.8). I can see and access everything on her hard drive no problem. I tried rebooting my MBP using her MBP and I get the same "do not enter" sign.
So I ran Disk Utility from my MBP and it said "the volume appears to be OK."
So I bought and ran DiskWarrior 4.4 (I had DW 4.0 but it wouldn't run on 10.6.8). It says that the "drive is functioning normally".
I then used DW 4.4 to "Repair Disk Permissions" and "Check All Files & Folders" and it reported:
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/error
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/qmqpd
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/trivial-rewrite
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/virtual
...then a bunch of others with the same Open error number.
Then it said that a bunch of .plist (Epson, HP and others) cannot be repaired.
Then I rebuilt the directory and it said: "All file and folder data was easily located." "Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be no changes to the number or contents of files and folders."
Still the same problem at startup... "do not enter".
So I restarted holding command-v to see what it had to say and it reported numberous things, such as:
Can't load kext com.apple.driver.ApplefileSystmeDriver - failed to resolve library dependencies.
    kext com.apple.driver.AppleFileSystmeDriver failed to load
Kext com.apple.iokit.IOAHCIBlockStorage - library kext com.apple.IOKIT.IOStorageFamily not found.
kext com.apple.driver.AppleFileSystemDriver failed to load (error 0xdc00800e)
The other kext that failed to load with the same error are:
    com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIMultimediaCommandsDevice
    com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClient
    Then I get:
    Couldn't alloc class "IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType05"
    Couldn't alloc class SCSITaskUserClientIniter"
The OS install disks that came with this MBP are 10.6.3 and when I tried to do a re-install it said that it couldn't install on this Mac. So I thought that I'd install Lion and see if that fixes things but I can't find it on the store (maybe because Mountain Lion comes out next month?)
    Any suggestions?

    OS X doesn't need repair
Please tell me you don't seriously mean this. There is no file system in existence that will not have at least the occasional problem.
Right, and Disk Utility is there for that purpose.
Outside of corrupted caches that the free OnyX takes care of, one doesn't need anything more really.
File systems and the files themselves can be damaged in a myriad of ways without having physical sector or other hardware related problems.
And Disk Utility is there for that too.

Sorry, just don't see that, that's what backups are for.
There have been many cases in these forums alone where DiskWarrior was able to repair a drive's files or file system well enough for a user to at least back up their personal files when Disk Utility either declared the disk okay, or couldn't fix it.
I don't see it much used around here actually and if it was a seriously viable tool, I certainly would have incorporated it.
I've been using Mac's since day one, fixing them plenty and never had a need to use Disk Warrior, in fact I've had only one hard drive fail on me and it was due to mechanical reasons, it just died.
I don't know of any Apple geniuses that use it, nor any of the Mac computer repair techs that use it.
What I do see is desperate users  eager to grasp at a software solution that buy it, like they buy iDefrag or other software promises to "speed up" a Mac, like MacKeeper.
IMO the large proportion of DW users have much bigger problems that they really should be replacing the troubled portion or zero erasing and reinstalling instead.
Sorry, I'm just not sold on DW.
Ask Linc Davis about his opinion on Disk Warrior, see what he says.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro not booting after install of Hyper V - ASUS z87 + intel 4670K

    Hi,
I am running windows 8.1 pro on a intel 4670K 4th Gen Haswell CPU and ASUS z87 plus motherboard. 16gb of kingston hyperx ddr1600 memory.
I have enabled virtualisation technology in the bios.  CPU has SLAT.... or Extended Page Table, as intel likes to refer to it.
When I install HyperV platform and management tools the computer configures and reboots
AFter reboot it brings up the blue window image and spinning circle of dots for a while then reboots. It does the same thing again and then reboots and goings into repair mode and asks me to do a system restore. It then restores to before they HyperV install.
I've tried turning off xHCI mode (i.e USB 3.0) in the bios as this seemed to be a known issue with some gigabyte boards. This did not rectify the issue
Updated to latest asus mainboard bios 1405.  Same issue still occurs upon install of hyper V.
Automatic repair does not work and I have to restore from system restore point.
I performed a clean boot after installing the feature and it still couldnt boot to windows.. it just sits at windows logo and then restarts a few times and then launches the startup repair. Once the startup repair begins, the only way I can get into windows
is restoring to a system restore point from before the hyperv feature install.

If you foolishly interrupted the initramfs creation after a kernel upgrade and didn't regenerate it manually, you earned this.
You'll need to find a live CD so you can chroot to your install and rerun mkinitcpio.

  • Hyper V feature in Win 8.1 after getting installed , system is not able to boot up

I am using Windows 8.1 professional x64 os in my Hp pavilion G6 laptop which has virtualisation technology enabled in the bios , but after enabling hyper v feature in the windows system is not able to boot up and circles around for a long time. I need
hyper v on my laptop , kindly help me out for the same.

    Hi,
Please try to boot into WinRE and run the Startup Repair option.
Generally speaking, when you add feature like Hyper-V, system would take a long time to get this feature configured. if your computer still stay updates configuration steps, you can use Windows 8.1 installation image to repair system. In system repair mode,
you can access into Command Prompt mode, and check CBS.log under C:\Windows\logs\CBS.
This log file would record Windows installation process, we may find the problem of Hyper-V installation.

  • How to boot when I get the "do not enter" sign

I am working to help a colleague that gets a "Do Not Enter" sing on boot-up of an iMac that was purchased through the university that we work with. From reading other posts, it was suggested that we re-install the OS to overcome the issue; on the assumption it is created by a corrupt file. This has proven not to work and we still get the same "Prohibited" sign during the start-up process. When Disk Utility is run, the boot sectors appear to fine and do not require specific repairs. Disk permissions were also repaired, but neither process has helped or corrected the problem. I am curious if others have encountered this issue and whether there is an easy work around? I came across one potential cause/solution - a bad SATA cable - however, I am unclear how the recovery disk could boot and run if the IO cable was bad, or even if the HDD was failing and working only intermittently. Any help/solution would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I suspect you have eithter a corrupt or failed HD. Attempt to restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key, then choose the Recovery Partition and open Disk Utility. Try to repair the HD, if it comes up with errors after 2-3 passes then you know the disk needs to be replaced.

  • Once I put the Firefox Icon in Apps, it shows up as a white circle/slash (as in "no" or "stop") NOT the standard Firefox Icon. I checked plug-ins."Shockwave Flash" shows up Vulnerable. When I update, I get download warnings. (more below)

Downloaded Firefox and put it into my Apps folder as instructed. Its Icon in my Apps folder is not the Fox/Globe but a white icon of papers with a white circle&diagonal slash (like a white "stop" or do-not-enter sign). When I pulled that to my dock, it transferred there as the Fox/Globe; but I'm concerned about opening Firefox because that Icon in my Apps isn't right. I assumed the circle/slash icon telling me something's wrong with the App. So I checked the PlugIns.
The PlugIn tells me "Shockwave Flash" is "Vulnerable, Update Now." But there are warnings about that download. When I check that, showing I'm a Mac, it gives me warnings for Windows!- but no warnings for Macs. What's going on?!
Why am I not getting the standard Firefox Icon in my Apps folder?
I don't want to corrupt my HD by opening Firefox if that Icon is telling me somethings wrong... (which seems the point of its circle/slash).
    This is all so unclear!
