Cisco 1300 configs; ROOT - NON ROOT

I'm using a AIR-BR1310-E-K9-R as ROOT and 5 NON ROOTS type (AIR-BR1310-E-K9).
Im looking for a default config to setup a wireless PTMP link between the ROOT and the NON ROOTS. To make this wireless connection i'm using an AIR-ANT2506

In a point-to-multipoint configuration, two or more non-root bridges associate to a root bridge. Up to 17 non-root bridges can associate to a root bridge, but the non-root bridges must share the available bandwidth See "Configuring the Access Point/Bridge for the First Time," for instructions on initial bridge setup.

  • 1250 802.11N series in root/non-root bridge mode

Using Yagi's, low loss cable, antenna outside, AP inside.
When operating autonomous 1250 series in root/non-root bridge mode, can I use 802.11N radios? Is it supported?
Or would it be better to use 1242's? This is for a customer, no time for testing, need rock solid design, in and out configuration...

    @leolaohoo -
I was just  asking for a definitive answer, weather its affirmative or negative, is there a benefit to using the 1252 over the 1242 giving the cost of each, since as you said the 802.11N can not be used to bridge, than I would say a 1242 is better fit for the AP bridge of 350', clear line of site over the 1252.

  • Cannot Associate 1532 Bridges in Non-Root role

    Hello,
Can someone please tell me what I am missing and why I cannot bring up 2 bridges in "Root" and "Non-Root" roles?
I have similarly configured bridges in a Root / Non-Root role several times before with older AP's and never had any issues... although it was always just 1 SSID, 1 Vlan, and no subinterfaces...
The only way I was able to get these 2 bridges to associate was to put the Non-Root bridge into a Workgroup Bridge role and then *BANG* everything worked perfectly.  I tried getting rid of the authentication and tried using the Parent command but neither helped.  Prior to entering Station Role Workgroup Bridge, the only message I would receive was showing on the Non-Root side and all it said was:
*Mar  1 07:27:13.867 GMT: %DOT11-4-CANT_ASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, cannot associate: No Response
    *Mar  1 07:27:28.891 GMT: %DOT11-4-CANT_ASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, cannot associate: Rcvd response from 544a.0005.8030 channel 3 2815
What am I missing or what have I incorrectly configured on my Non-Root config?
Bridges are both 1532i with the Autonomous Image 15.2(4)JB5
Attached are the configs prior to changing the Non-Root AP to a station role of Workgroup Bridge.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
This should work with multiple sub-interfaces.
    Few more suggestions
    1. Remove this from your BRIDGE SSID & check
    mobility network-id 1
This is only require when you configure L3 roaming & WDS in place.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/aironet-1200-series/8103-ap-faq.html
    2. Try to set WPA version 2 & only AES encryption.
Also try to Associate your Bridges using Open Auth first (as shown in my blog post initial section) & then try to add security.

  • Autonomous APs' non-root radio tracking Questions

    Hi guys,
As you know, we can configure an autonomous AP that is using its .11a radio as "non-root bridge" and its .11b/g as root to track the .11a radio so that if it is down for any reason, then it will shut down the Root Radio. I've some questions about this if someone tested the below scenarios:
    (1) If the .11b/g radio has been shut down, will it stay shutdown and never comeback unless an administrator do it manually? Is there an automated feature like the switches 'errdisable recover cause' method?
    (2) Is there a command like 'show fallback bla bla ..' that will allow us to see that the current radio state has been shut down due to radio tracking?
    B.Regards
    Mahmoud

Yes, these model you can configure as Root/Non-Root as long as you have an autonomous image loaded. Most of the time feature is depend on the software code.
Release notes available at below URL for details of the supported/unsupported features of each software version.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps12555/prod_release_notes_list.html
Here is one basic config example of Root/Non-Root using different AP model, but it may help you to get basic config done for these AP model as well.

  • Non-root bridge association problem

I have an installation using Cisco 1242 Access Points (IOS) as bridges
in 5Ghz band, and as AP in 2,4 GHz band. Sometimes I get problems
with the non-root bridges, after mains outage, they will not
associate to the root bridge. Command "dot11 do 1 carrier busy"
issued to the non-root bridge helps, but sometimes I have to use it
several times. Have anybody any idea about possible cause?
    Thanks

    Hi Frank,
I think I have found the reason of my troubles. It is the following configuration command:
    (interface Dot11Radio1)
    world-mode dot11d country CZ outdoor
which is not only not-needed on the non-root bridge AP, it prevents associating the non-root bridge to the root-bridge AP. It does not cause the troubles on each root non-root couple. The troubles are more frequent with IOS version 12.3(11)JA or 12.3(8)JEA than with 12.3(8)JA2.

  • B1400 non-root does not display/monitor temperature

I have root and non-root B1410 bridges. The root bridges will show temperatures in the GUI. The non-root do not. They show a WARNING: No Reading temperature monitoring is at 'INITIALIZE' state. What does this mean? I have not been able to find any reference. Other than root/non-root parms, I see nothing that is different in these configurations. They are in remote locations and temperature reporting is needed.

Thanks for the response. After some digging I found this BUG.
    It says fixed in 12.3(8)JA

I have two buidlings acroos the street from each other.  I have two Cisco Aironet 1250 wireless AP's with the first one going in the main building with network backbone.  The Second AP goes across the street with the other wired network segment.  Both AP's have long range antenas 2.4 GHZ on top of each building.  I have configured the 1st one as the Root Bridge.  The one across the street is configured as non-root bridge.  I have both AP's configured with the same WEP key and also with the same SSID name with both set to broadcast it.   I am still unsure and confused as to how I get the non-root bridge to talk to and use the root bridge to get on the main network.
1- It’s main to use the Root parent Mac address.
2-  Is there another config that I am missing to get the signal?
Note: I still not getting any signal from the root although distance between root and non-root is 330m
My root antenna is AIR-ANT24120 and non-root antenna is AIR-ANT1949 and attached files is my configuration files
    Thank you.

    1.  How are the AIR-ANT24120 and the AIR-ANT1949 installed?
the AIR-ANT24120 is connected virtically on tower far 11m from the earth and AIR-ANT1949 is connected horizontally on tower far 10m from the earth
    2.  What is the distance between both APs?
    350 m
    3.  Do you have clear line-of-sight between the two?
there is one tanker in the middle between them but it's far 7m from the earth
    4.  Is the two APs properly aligned?
i think yes and changed the aligned many times without any news (I don't have any tools for alignment)
    5.  Which point are the antennas connected to?  Primary, Secondary or middle?
I tried in the primary and secondary but never tried the middle antenna
    Thanks

  • Cannot associate between non-root to root on 1300 Bridge

I installed 4 1300 Bridges, point to multipoint configuration. One bridges is acting as root whereas the other 3 are non-root. The SSID are locked down manually. None of these non-root can associate to the root, I noticed that the wireless interface is (hardware/software) are down eventhough I enabledit. When I changed the non-root to become root, the wireless interface went up. This doesn't make sense. Pls help. Thanks.

I'm sure you have checked the required parameters needed to connect your non-root bridges, i.e. distance is set for the root, pwr settings, no encryption set for now. I've seen this issue as well on the 1310 with no solution from Cisco. It works well in a PP link. Try to establish the PP link between one bridge first. Leave the SSID as tsunami and broadcast it. Make sure you can associate with one of the non-root when you set it up for client association. I'm sure the radio is fine, but this can verify that.

  • 1300 Root-Bridge and Non-Root Bridge setup

I have two 1300s that I am trying to set up as Root Bridge and Non-Root Bridge, however, everytime i specify one of them as a Non-Root bridge, the radio0 interface becomes disabled. The only option that i am able to pick that enables the radio0 interface is "Access Point", which is what am trying to avoid it being.
Can anybody help me figure out how to go about this

A non-root's radio will show as disabled if it cannot find the root AP to associate to. Make sure you have "infrastructure-ssid" configured under the SSID on both the root and non-root bridges. Also depending on code versions you may have to configure the distance command under the radio interface on the root.

  • Non-root is not associate with root

I am working to setup the non-root associate with root. I have checked every configuration from the root are the same as non-root. Accept it set to non-root.
    - It is the same VLAN, SSID, authentication is open. I have encryption from both sides are the same.
It is still not associated. What else should I check from the non-root to get association? Please give me some helps

  • NON-ROOT TO NON-ROOT ASSOCIATION??

    Hi,
I have one AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9, and two AIR-AP1242AG-N-K9. I have already configure them to work as bridge.
    Root Bridge with  wireless-clients  ----------->     1   AIR-AP1242AG-N-K9
    Non-Root Bridge1 with  wireless-clients  --->      1   AIR-AP1242AG-N-K9
    Non-Root Bridge2 with  wireless-clients ---->      1   AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9
I notice after reseting the root bridge or one of the non-root bridges that  when I type the command "sh DOt11 associations"  the results shows that there is an associatiation between the 2 Non-Root bridge. When this happend the connection of the clients associated to this APs is very unstable.
as far as I know the association is just between Root and Non-Root bridges.
I don´t know why this happend.
In order to avoid this I disable in one of the non-root bridge (AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9) the option "Force Infrastructure Device to associate only...."
Cisco's Docs show an example of config when there is one root bridge and one non-root bridge but in my scenario I have 2 non-root bridge and one root bridge.
I would like to know if the config for my scenario must be  different from the simple scenario (1 root and 1 non-root).
I hope any of you can help me.
    Regards

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your recommendations.
The mac-address authentication option you recommend is the option shown as "Root Parent MAC 1" ,"Root Parent MAC 2 ....." on Setting---> Network interface???
For root bridge , I should write down the MAC addres of the non-root bridge1  on Root Parent MAC 1 field and  on the field of Root Parent MAC 2, the  MAC of  the non-root bridge2 ?? ,  am I right?
and for the non-root bridges I should just set on Root Parent MAC 1 just the MAC address of the root bridge???
    Regards,

  • Wireless Root Bridge - Non Root Bridge

I've been reading a lot about bridge configuration for wireless AP but i cannot make it work the following scenario:
    PC -- ethernet port --> Non-Root-Bridge -----------> Root Bridge ---------> Switch
    vlan111                     native 18 - vlan111           native 18 - vlan111      vlan native 18,111
Its pinging fine between switch and Non-Root. But when i put vlan111 on Non-Root the two AP's stop responding to the network.
What am i doing wrong? Plz i need some help!! I have two 1242.

  • Changing native VLAN on non-root bridges

I have quite a few 1310 Bridges setup in point to multipoint configuration with a root bridge with a sector antenna at the campus network and remote sites connecting in. I have multiple VLANs trunked onto one SSID, this allows for having multiple vlans in use at the remote site. The problem is I want to configure some remote site bridges with a different native vlan than the standard allowing me to plug the client directly into the injector and eliminate the need for a vlan aware switch. I have tried to configure the the "encapsulation dot1q VLAN# native" but this swaps the bridge group on the subinterface to a bridge-group 1 .

Correct. As soon as you change it to 100, you will lose access to the devices since vlan 1 is used for management.  To shorten the down time, you can create vlan 100 and all the SVIs on all switches ahead of time and than change it form 1 to 100 in a maintenance window.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs.  Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc.  Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

  • 7920 associates to root bridge but not to non-root bridge

I have 7920s using open authentication with WEP128 cipher. I have two 1300 root AP's (with client support) and three non-root AP's (also client support) in the same lab area. The root AP's and non-Root AP's associate and link to each other no problem. However, the 7920's will only associate with the Root APs. If I power down the root APs, the 7920s show "no AP found". I've verified SSID and WEP128 keys. I've also noted that the root AP does have a channel specified under dot11radio0 but the non-roots do not. Do the 7920's just scan for any channel until it finds an association or do I need to specify a channel in the non-root bridges?
    Thanks,
    Mike.

With static WEP, the authentication is happening at the AP level. Will want to ensure non-root is associated to a root though otherwise the interface may be in "reset" state.
The 7920 will look at these 2 as individual APs regardless of channel. Non-roots should have the same channel as the root, otherwise will not be able to communicate.
