Cisco 2960S-24TS-S using SFP modules between switches

I am using Cisco 2960S-24TS-S using SFP modules for two different speed requirements, I have two SFP ports using 100Mbit modules and the other two SFP ports using 1000Mbit modules.
I have two Cisco 2960S-24TS-S switches connected together via a fiber optic cable, and each SFP module is on port 28, with a 1000 Mbit SFP module in each, and the two switches will not connect. The fiber was checked with a light tester not a db kit.
Do I need to have SFP port specific setup details in a configuration file for the Cisco Switch or does the SFP module handle this?
" interface GigabitEthernet1/0/28" - set up in config file for the port. Does this need to dictate "interface 100" or "1000MbitEthernet1/0/28" instead?

The ports should auto-negotiate speed you should not need to hard code them to get them to come up , Are the ports showing up/down or down/down can you post the show interface for each side and the show run int x/x for each port

  • Port Channel Issue on Cisco 2960s-24ts

    Hi All
Last week at a customer site we installed a 2nd 2960s 24 port switch to form a stack using flexstack cables, and the switch stack is working as expected as I can see a master switch and 2nd switch as a member.
For redundancy / resilience we decided to use port 24 on each switch over copper for trunk uplinks to our core switch. The issue that we're having is I can't ping the switch management address. I can however see the address in the arp table and the edge switch is visible when I run show cdp nei. As a work around I've shutdown one of the ports to the downlink from core to edge in order to ping the management address of the switch which is in vlan 1. I'd like to get the port-channel working on both sides for resilience.
    ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED...
    Core switch is a WS-C3750G-24TS-1U running software version  C3750 Boot Loader (C3750-HBOOT-M) Version 12.2(25r)SEE4, C3750 Software (C3750-IPBASE-M)

The config on the edge switch which goes to the core is :

    end
    interface GigabitEthernet2/0/24

     channel-group 6 mode on
    end
    interface Port-channel6
     description ******
     switchport mode trunk
    end
The config on the downlink ports from the core to the edge:
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/20
     description Edge
     switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
     switchport mode trunk
     channel-group 20 mode on

  • Cisco WS-C3750X-12S-S SFP modules

    Dear team
I have requred new 12 port sfp switch  I have selected WS-C3750X-12S-S
for my requrement is here my doubt is..
Is I have need to add seperate SFP trancievers for this switch or  not ?
data sheet I didnt find that switch come alongwith 12 trancievers so how should I configure this procudt

    Hi,
The Catalyst 3750X-12S switch is an SFP based switch so you do need SFP transceivers. Take a look at Table 6 in the Cisco Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix for details of the supported transceivers and the OS release they're supported from.

  • SFP module, help

    Hi guys,
I never use SFP module before, so please help me out.
I have a fiber connection between location A and B. I test the fiber with contractor and the result is successfull.
From the termination, there is patch cord that connect to a SG 300-10MP 10-port Gigabit Max-PoE Managed Switch (SRW2008MP-K9-EU) using a SFP module (MGBSX1).
Location B also the same. From the termination, there is a patch cord connect to a 3Com switch also using a SFP module.
My question is, at the Cisco switch there is no green indicator light, and is check the GUI it show port is Adminstrative = UP, Operational = Down.
If connect the termination to the SFP, it should have light right??
Fyi, at the 3com also no light indicator.
    I need an opinion.

Do you have multimode fiber between Location A and B?  How long is this fiber link?
What SFP module are you using in the 3COM swtich?
If you take a patch cord and loop it at Location A from the SFP's transmit port directly to its receive port, does the GUI show UP, UP? Try the same at Location B.  This should confirm the SFPs are working.
The following 2 documents can be helpful troubleshooting transciever and link issues.

Is the switch covered by a Cisco contract? If so, open a TAC case with Cisco and you will probably get a hardware replacement.

  • Cisco 2960 / Linksys SRW2008P - Radius dynamic vlan authentication

    Hi all,
I am planning on purchasing a Linksys SRW2008P before I buy it I want to know if it has these features.
This is how my test lab is setup.
    Laptop -> Linksys SRW2008 -> Cisco 2960 -> Linksys WRVS4400N -> Internet
My Cisco 2960 is going act as the "Distribution Switch" in my Lab. It's main purpose is to implment Radius 802.1X dynamic VLAN(s)
The Linksys WRV2008 will act as an "Access Switch" the main features I would like to know is if it can support 802.1X dynamic VLAN(s) propagated from the Linksys 2960.
For exmple: I am going to setup all my VLAN's on the 2960 and I want them to replicate to my SRW 2008 (like VTP). Whoever plugs into a port on the SRW will be authenticated via RADIUS and RADIUS will authenticate the port and send the VLAN information.
I searched throughout the forms and from what I see is that Linksys switches do not support Dynamic VLAN(s) but I want to double check
The reason why I am doing this is because I want 802.1X authentication throughout my small office but the problem is some offices have 1 Port with 2 users and a printer. I want both users to authenticate via 802.1X and avoid trying to buy a 2960 8 port switch for 500$ just for 2 users.
If anybody has any suggestions or past experiences with a situation similiar to mine that would be great!
    Cheers

HI.  I have read a previous post that can confirm if Linksys switches support dynamic vlans.  Check out the link below.

  • Optical Fiber connection between GBIC module and SFP module

    Hi
I am in need of help.
I have a 3750 24TS-S, 2 port SFP, switch at the edge. And i have a 4507R switch at the Distribution layer. In 4507 switch I have WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port and also have WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module. I am using WS-G5486 Single mode connector, LX/LH tranceiver to connect to this port.
This is the scenario.. i want to know is it posible to conect one end of the fiber cable to connect to a SFP Module ( 3750-24TS-S, 2 Port SFP) and other end ( WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port or WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module) at the WS-G5486 Single mode LX/LH connector ?????
Plz let me now asap.. i need to give a solution imdtly.
    Thanks & regards
    Jacob

    Discussion is never a problem ....;-}
The issue is that the signal is "too loud" and is distorted (or, more correctly, is so loud it overloads the receiver).
The operational envelope for nearly every receiver of any kind includes a bottom number (too weak to hear) and a top number (too loud to understand).
As an example, think about an system where you have a hearing aid that would let you hear someone speaking in a normal voice from 100 feet away ... then having someone scream the same words into the hearing aid from 6 inches away ... the sound would be distorted and you would have difficulty understanding them ... after a while, you'd begein to go deaf and eventually, it would sound normal (until you became completely deaf).
So, what you need to do is look at the transmitter power, and the envelope/range of acceptable power the receiver can hear.
Normally that difference is the optical budget ... given the loss numbers of the media between the two, you can determine if you have enough power to make the trip.
In a Lab environment, you still have to hit the receiver's budget number, but from the other end (the "too high" side).
If you know the transmitter puts out X, and the receiver can accept from Y to (X-50), then you need to add enough attenuation to get X down to (X-50)or lower (but still more than Y).
When you have a transmitter powerful enough to drive tens of kilometers, putting one two meters away from the receiver will pretty much guarantee a burnout (unless you install optical attenuation).
    Good Luck
    Scott

  • DWDM SFP modules - where to use?

Hi, we are considering to interconnect two sites using DWDM. What type (colored, non-colored 1310) SFP modules should we use on our switches connecting to multiplexer/OADM? Does it depend on the actual MUX device?

DWDM multiplexers and OADM filters have wavelength specific ports, that are connected to an optical transceiver of the same wavelength.  Below is a link to the Cisco DWDM pluggable optical transceivers,

  • Difference between GBIC and SFP module

when its best to use GBIC and When to use SFP ?
what i know is basically SFP is a smaller version of GBIC but I am not clear when to use what any special recommendation ?

    GBIC - Datasheet definition:
The industry-standard Cisco Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) is a hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into a Gigabit Ethernet port or slot, linking the port with the network. Cisco GBICs can be interchanged on a wide variety of Cisco products and can be intermixed in combinations of 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-ZX, or 1000BASE-CWDM interfaces on a port-by-port basis.

    SFP - Datasheet definition:
The industry-standard Cisco® Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Gigabit Interface Converter is a hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into a Gigabit Ethernet port or slot, linking the port with the network (Figure 1). SFPs can be used and interchanged on a wide variety of Cisco products and can be intermixed in combinations of 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-ZX, or 1000BASE-BX10-D/U on a port-by-port basis.

Ok, now if you have a look at the above datasheets for GBIC's & SFP's, you would find that GBIC & SFP are different in there sizes, hence it is more of a question as to which gigabit solution your device supports. If your device supports GBIC, like 4500's, you will have to go for a GBIC, & if your device supports SFP, like 3750's, you will have to go for a SFP. These days all the latest devices would have SFP's normally.
Also, here is a very good document which lists almost all the GBIC's & SFP's & the devices on which they are supported, you may check your device on this list & decide which one can you use accordingly.
    Hope that helps !!

  • Sfp issue to connect to cisco 2960

We bought two Cisco 2960-48TC-L, I have issue with gi0/1 and 0/2. the sfp won't stick into the port firmly, you have to press the it in order to get the light, try with second 2960, the same result, yet, tried some other 2960 we got few month ago, it works fine, by the way, these 2 cisco 2960 made in Oct,08, I suspect the gi0/1 and 0/2 is defective, anyone has any suggestion?

Once you insert the SFP's the switches should detect and can be seen from the sh int status command
If they are not detecting, then i would suggest you raise a case with cisco and get RMA

  • Cisco 3750 Switch SFP Module

    Hi all,
    I have one 3750 switch( ME-C3750-24TE )with IOS 12.2(25)EY4,
Now I have two SFp Module GLC-SX-MM and i have inserted in four ports of Switch
But nowhere I found it detected via "Sh inventory"
Moreover I have also tried with loop cable (LCPC-FCPC-ATTENTUATOR-FCPC-LCPC)bUT NOT GETTING lED ON ANY PORT
    Pl. Guide
I am attaching sh-tech for reference

    Hi,
when inserted the SFP module in one port take a look at the output of "show interface gigabitethernetX/Y" watch for a line (I think it is line 5) including the word "media", there should be a short description of the SFP. Also look at the first line of "show interface gigabitethernetX/Y" it could be that the SFP doesn't work in the switch (maybe because it is a none cisco one) then there would be something like "err-disabled". And if you have logging enabled on the switch (e.g. logging buffered 8192 debugging) then there should be an error message also.
The command "show idprom interface gigabitethernetX/Y" shows information about the SFP module in slotX/Y.
Depending on the "err-disable" configuration of the switch ("show err-disable detect" and "show err-disable recovery") a looped interface maybe put in an 'err-disabled' state, see "show interface ..." or "show logging"

    Hi,
Looking at the SFP compatability table for 39XX series routers.

    The MGBSX1 is NOT mentioned
Looks like the MGBSX1 is only compatable with the Small Business switch family.
