Cisco 3020 internal cross-connect

Hey, network professionals!
I found the following text about the Cisco 3020 switch:
Dual-purpose external/internal 10/100/1000BASE-T copper Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports. These
ports can be configured for internal 1000BASE-X cross-connection with a corresponding switch
module. When ports 23x and 24x are in external operation mode, they support auto-MDIX and
autonegotiation. The default is external operation mode.
But how exactly are the internal connections between my 6 cisco 3020 switches in the c7000 HP Blade enclosure ?
What does "corresponding switch module" means ?
Thank you
Constantin

I have to say yes, it can since the concentrator can be defined as a hub for vpn traffic, in here I will ask you a question. Do the devices on the "outside" meaning on the public side of the concentrator know how to reach the vpn client? In other words do these devices have a route back to the concetrator to reach the vpn client's pool?

  • Do mutiple 6120 cross-connect (heartbeat) work through a switch?

We have two 6120s connected to two UCS 5108s in two separate rooms in our building.  We have just completed a 2nd formal server room and will be moving one of the 6120/5108 pairs into that room.  Currently, the 6120's are cross connected (1Gig copper) to each other and all of the 10Gig connections are appropriately connected.
The issue is that the two server rooms are more than 100m apart so there is no copper connections between the rooms.  We have switches in each room connected via 10Gig fiber.
Our VAR who installed originally this sent an e-mail that these 1Gig copper cross connects must not pass through a switch.  He has left to get married and is gone for a few weeks.
We are not moving this until November, but I'm not willing to wait a couple of weeks until the engineer returns to get the answer to this question.  I have looked on CCO and other than identifying the 1Gig ports as "cross-connect" or "cluster", I can't find anything out.
I would think that they would work through a switch, perhaps in their own non-routed VLAN or something.
Will this work?  Is there a design guide on CCO that shows it?
    Thanks!

What you are asking for is an enhancement which I fully agree with.
Latency is not the issue here. It is how the software which manages the L1-L2 links on the FI's.
They are bonded internally. Not expecting any other traffic (CDP, BPDU or anything else when you connect to a switch for example amongst other things). You connect a switch in between and bonding breaks. You could now potentially think of 1 link to get around bonding or turn channel-group explicitly on the switch etc..
But the fact of the matter is that it has neither been tested/blessed nor advertised as a possible workaround.
So currently it won't work and *if* it does, you are in unchartered territory where support if something breaks is going to be an issue.
If you look at the User Guide at
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/gui/config/guide/b_GUI_Config_Guide.html
Page 63 and 65 have references to it -
The L1 ports on both fabric interconnects are directly connected to each other.
The L2 ports on both fabric interconnects are directly connected to each other.
To use the cluster configuration, the two fabric interconnects must be directly connected together using Ethernet cables between the L1 (L1-to-L1) and L2 (L2-to-L2) high availability ports, with no other fabric interconnects in between.
Note: I would have written  "with no other *switches* in between" rather than fabric interconnect above but then thats me.
The 10 Gig links cannot be used for heartbeat either. All mgmt is the 4 1 gig ports that you see on the FI's. 10gig's are data.
Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news

  • Cross connected calls over MPLS WAN

    Hi,
I have an issue with one of my offices that has me extremely puzzled.
When users call users in other offices, sometimes the calls get cross-connected, where they are suddenly talking to another caller.
Our telephony provider is insisting it is my network, but I have this office router and switches configured the same as our other 5 offices that don't have this issue.
They are now trying to say it is an MPLS issue from our Telco, but I figure I would be seeing issues with data going over that link as well.
Has anyone ever experience this "crosstalk" before?
The routers at the offices are 2811/2851, with 10meg MPLS WAN between, and 3560/3750 PoE switches for the phones.
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

The 2851 at our head office is running 12.3(8)T8.
The 2821 at the remote office is running 12.3(8)T8 as well.
We are not using CCM, we are using a Mitel VoIP solution (which I hate and wanted to go with Cisco instead!), which is using Minet (shows as RTP traffic).

  • Span blade server on Cisco 3020?

I have an HP blade center with a Cisco 3020. From what I know, the baldes use a connection on the backplane for network connectivity.  So my question is, can you setup a monitoring session to capture traffic from one individual blade server? I would normally span source interface destination interface.  But how do I specify the blade server's interface when it's not on the switch itself? Thanks.

    Hi Josh,
I'm not sure I really follow you here. The backplane of the blade server chassis is simply used as a communications channel between the blade server NICs and the server facing interfaces of the switch i.e., Gi0/1-16 and has no real bearing on how SPAN would work.
SPAN in the Catalyst 3020 switch works in exactly the same way as other Catalyst switches, with you specifying the source and destination interfaces etc., as you normally would. So assuming you have a server connected to Gi0/1 that you wanted to capture traffic to/from then you would configure something along the lines of monitor session 1 source interface gi0/1.
The tricky part can be the SPAN session destination and you have a number of options.
Use a server within the same chassis as the capture device.
If you have a server in the same chassis that has packet capture capability then you simply specify its NIC interface as the SPAN destination e.g., monitor session 1 destination interface gi0/2. The problem here is that when the destination interface goes into the monitoring state you'll lose in-band connectivity to the server so you would need to use the console to access the server.
Attach an external capture device to one of the switches external interfaces
The Catalyst 3020 has eight external facing interfaces i.e., Gi0/17-24 which are typically used for upstream network connectivity. If not all of these are in use then attach your capture device to one of those interfaces and configure the SPAN destination appropriately e.g., monitor session 1 destination interface Gi0/24.
Attach your capture device to an upstream switch and, on the Catalyst 3020, use an RSPAN VLAN as the destination to carry the traffic
This requires you define an RSPAN VLAN on the Catalyst 3020 and configure this as the SPAN destination. This VLAN is then configured on the external interfaces between your Catalyst 3020 and the upstream switch, where you would connect your capture device. In this case the upstream switch obviously requires a SPAN session to be configured as well.
There's discussion on the use of SPAN and RSPAN in the Integrating the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for the HP c-Class BladeSystem into the Cisco Data Center Network Architecture design guide that would go into more detail and has examples configurations.

  • Sun Cluster & 6130/6140 thru switch with cross-connections not supported?

    Hi:
I noticed that the 6140 does not support cross-connecting the 2 controllers to 2 switches for higher availability when using Sun Cluster:
    http://docs.sun.com/source/819-7497-10/chapter3.html
Does anyone know why this restriction is there?
    Thanks!

Since there was no real answer to the question in this forum, I cross posted this issue to the cluster forum.
See http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5261282&tstart=0 for the full thread.
Basically, the restriction against cross-connections is no longer valid and the documentation should be updated to remove the note.
This is all a good thing, because I had my 6140's wired into my sun cluster environment via the 'cross-connections' method diagramed in figure 3-4. :-)

    Thanks for all your help!

You need to learn how to start an oracle database. The database does not start automatically if you're using the database that comes with the VM Manager.
    ps -ef | grep pmon
will tell you if the database is running and mounted.
    ps -ef | grep tns
will tell you if the database listener is running
    OR
You could use 3.2.2 and use the MYSQL database that come with the VM Manager
    OR
you could load the enterprise version of Oracle Database and use cluster services to automatically start and stop the database. You get a single use license with the VM Manger that allows you either use standard of enterprise edition of the Oracle Database.

  • Bypass(IPS or TAP) network cross-connect the two RJ45 connectors electrically thus creating an extended Layer 1 network

Thanks for your time and knowledge. I am trying to understand how bypass mode works in terms of cross connection.
Bypass mode:  network relays cross-connect the two RJ45 connectors electrically thus creating an extended Layer 1 network
Let us focus on one connection  COM1 ---  3560 ---  ELFIQ (Link Balancer) ---- ASA.
Basically ELFIQ will be a bypass mode when power is gone.
The engineer told me that I have to put cross cable between ELFIQ and ASA5505 only which is "2" cable from below diagram.
     So, it will be
COM1 ------(Straight)-----  3560 -----(straight)------  ELFIQ (Link Balancer) -----(cross)--- ASA.
And he told me also that if there is no switch (in future). I need to put both cables as cross cables.
     COM1 ------------- (Cross) ------------------ ELFIQ-------------- (Cross) ------------------ ASA5505
I couldn't see any consistency from this bypass works because case 1 (with switch) and case 2 (without switch)

  • Cross Connection Detected - Pipex DSL

I've recently had the mis-pleasure of having to re-install and archive my iMac G5 back to OSX 10.3.5 (was running on 10.3.9), as I was getting a blank grey screen on start-up, which I'm still at a loss as to why my iMac suddenly stopped working after two years of iMac joy.
Unfortunately, I didn't tick the box to keep all my user settings, [doh!], and have had to re-install and re-configure my dsl settings to connect to my isp Pipex.
I've followed their support instructions as detailed on their website to the below settings:
    Location: Automatic
    Show: Speedtouch USB
    PPP
    Service Provider: Pipex Xtreme
Account Name [email protected] (my username)
    Password: .......
    Telephone Number: 0,38
I've re-installed the Alcatel Speedtouch modem software, and the iMac recognises the modem, when it's plugged into any of the USB ports.
When I try and connect to the service, I get the message
"A cross connection has been detected, please verify your settings and try again", which I have done countless times.
I know my Pipex service is ok, as it works fine on my PC, from where I type this now.
I've left it several days, I've re-booted countless times.
Does anyone know what else I need to do?
I've emailed Pipex, in the hope their support team can help, but thought I'd try here as well.
    What causes the above error?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I am having exactly the same issues aswell and looking at the posts there was no end to the problem with the product working.  Can anyone shed some insight as I have tried all the same steps but to no avail.... the status tab gives me no IP/gateway/DNS information -
Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP     Internet IP Address: 0.0.0.0     Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0     Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
if i try and ping an IP address from my machine or using digits when connected direct to modem then I get correct response but when using the router with wired connection then it cannot find IP addresses and  times out...

  • Please help! Broken internal cross references.

I'm creating a 20-page PDF from a PowerPoint file. In the source PowerPoint document, I've embedded internal cross references that DO initially carry over when the file is saved out as a PDF. However, whenever I rename the resulting PDF or move it to a new location, all of its internal cross references cease working. I can click on them, and they "flash" once, but they do not take me to a different page. I've been able to replicate the issue on other computers, both inside and outside my organization, and in both Mac and PC environments.
Is this something to do with relative vs. absolute links? Is the issue likely on Adobe's end? Or on PowerPoint's? Is there some setting I need to change somewhere?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts. I've spent hours trying to research and diagnose this problem, to no avail.
For what it's worth, here are some of the tech specs of my system:
    - Acrobat v7.0
    - PowerPoint 2007
    - Windows XP
    - To save the PowerPoint as a PDF, I'm selecting the Windows button from the upper-left corner, hovering over "Save as", selecting "PDF or XPS", selecting "PDF" as the file type, selecting my desktop (or other location) as the destination, and clicking "Publish".

    Some observations.
    Acrobat 7 — PowerPoint 2007
Office 2007 applications are not supported by Acrobat 7's PDFMaker
    See: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/compatible-web-browsers-pdfmaker-applications.html
MS "Mac Office" — Acrobat 7
Acrobat 7 supported Office X and Office 2004 only.
Scroll to the bottom of the link above.
You'll see that, with contemporary releases of Mac Office and Acrobat there is no PDFMaker support.
From what you've posted it appears you do not have compatible software combinations on either the Windows or the Mac boxes.
    Be well...

  • Powerbook G4 with RAZR V3 as modem crossed connections error

I'm having what seems to be a very simple problem trying to use my phone as a modem. Unfortunately my new apartment isn't wired for cable or a landline, so I thought this would be the easiest option for Internet. Think again! I've been trying to reach T Mobile for 2 days, and have been left on hold for up to two hours. Finally they told me that the problem is with my Mac software and not the phone.
Basically the problem is this. When I try to dial up with my bluetooth (I have all the settings correct, I believe, plus the T Mobile password/number in place) it connects, and then immediately disconnects giving an error of:
"A crossed connection was detected. Please check your settings and try again."
I am at my wit's end and don't know what to do. My computer is about 2 years old - I don't know what version of OSX I have, because as you've seen, I have to send this message from work since I don't have Internet at home.
Is there a software update for bluetooth I should install? As far as I know I'm more or less up to date on my updates.
    Thank you!!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
They are right: this is an issue on your end involving your configuration. It involves the use of an inappropriate modem driver. Your Motorola RAZR V3 is a GPRS modem when connected to your computer using the Bluetooth dial-up networking [DUN] profile, and requires an appropriate modem script, account settings specific to your carrier, and a data plan.
If you are a T-Mobile subscriber with T-Mobile Unlimited Internet, you have the required data plan. Your Internet Connect settings should be:
    Telephone number: *99#
    Account name: voicestream
    Password: voicestream
The APN identifier is internet2.voicestream.com for standard connections and internet3.voicestream.com for virtual private networking connections. Which you are configure to use depends upon your prior communication with T-Mobile data specialists, but the default is the non-VPN internet2.voicestream.com identifier.
You can locate a GPRS script at Ross Barkman's site at…
    http://www.taniwha.org.uk
…or purchase Macron's GPRS Script Generator to create and fine-tune your own. More information about the Macron product is available here:

  • SLS as Router: Trouble with internal hosts connecting to external IP.

I was hijacking [http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12200257] long enough, so I'm moving this to my own question.
Setup: SLS 10.6.4 on Mac Mini(2010).
GigE en2 is connected to an internal network (hereafter 'lan')
USB Ethernet en0 (MacBookAir adapter) is connected to the external network (hereafter 'WAN').
Server has Two IP addresses, 'lan.lan.lan.2' and 'WAN.WAN.WAN.WAN'. Default route for server is 'WAN.WAN.WAN.GW'.
Server is serving NAT, DHCP, Firewall
Internal clients (such as 'lan.lan.lan.lan') trying to connect to 'WAN.WAN.WAN.WAN' (any port, any service) take about 13 SECONDS before they receive a reply.
External clients connecting to the WAN IP get served right away. ("The cobbler's children go barefoot").
Internal clients connecting to the internal IP (lan.lan.lan.2) are connected right away, also.
If I run 'route monitor' on the server during the 13 second connection, I see this:
    bash-3.2# route monitor -n

Yes, it would be a losing route to try to reply out the WAN.WAN.WAN.GW for the internal address!
Furthermore, "traceroute -s WAN.WAN.WAN.WAN lan.lan.lan.lan" shows a route going OUT which of course fails.
Traceroutes of the LAN and WAN port on the server, show indeed that for the first several seconds, (until the RTM_LOSING message appears) the server tries to reply out the WAN port.
I've tried all sorts of static routes… to no avail
One odd thing: Why is the RTM_LOSING route IFSCOPEd to the external interface?
    Any help is appreciated.
Yes, I'm definitely considering using a hardware router instead. But I'm really trying to avoid that- trying to save on space, power, heat here. The Mac is really a great box… If I can only get this fixed.
Thanks in advance to anyone who looks at this.

Second I installed Applejack 1.6, booted the server in single user mode, and issued the following command:
    applejack auto restart
I wasn't sure what the purpose of AppleJack <http://applejack.sourceforge.net/> was here, but reading on…
Everything has been stable for over 3 hours. I did the scopedroute change with the conf file and rebooted because other people in other discussions have had limited success modifying the setting while the server was running (without *clearing the caches, aka applejack*, and rebooting).
Aha! There's probably a simple command line way to do this while running… somewhere… But, I'm willing to try it. I've already made the Mac our site's perimeter router, and I'm not quite ready to switch to a separate hardware router as the shiny new Mini ought to work.
But, some sort of cache being out of date, is a plausible reason for it "only working for a little while".
On the plus side, I'm getting a great TCP/IP re-education in the meanwhile.

  • Cisco ASR - How to connect an OTV internal interface to a FabricPath domain

Scenario - migrate servers while maintaining their existing IP address from data centre 1 to data centre 2 with minimal downtime. Diagram attached.
I'm planning on using a Cisco ASR1001-X with AES license at DC1 and DC2 and configuring the routers with OTV to extend 10 x VLANs between the data centres. The join interface would connect directly to the WAN circuit NTU and the Internal Interface would connect to the switch and be configured as a service instance with 10 VLANs tagged using dot1q. The problem is that DC1 switch infrastructure is using Cisco Nexus 56xx configured with FabricPath. I can't find any information that suggests that i can patch the Cisco ASR router's internal interface directly into a FabricPath switchport or what the configuration would be.
Older OTV documentation refers to Nexus 7000 and OTV stating the following: "Because OTV encapsulation is done on M-series modules, OTV cannot read FabricPath packets. Because of this restriction, terminating FabricPath and reverting to Classical Ethernet where the OTV VDC resides is necessary."
Is this true for the Cisco ASR also? The only workaround i can think of is to install a cheap catalyst switch connected to the FabricPath domain and re-introduce spanning-tree at the edge but this seems backwards to me. Any help or suggestions appreciated? Thanks

    Thanks Minh,
So it is possible to have switchports configured as routed, fabricpath and trunk/access in a fabricpath configuration? Do i need to add any spanning-tree pseudo or priority configuration?
    Sample configs:
    #ASR
    interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1
     no ip address
     service instance 1 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 1
      bridge-domain 1
     service instance 2 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 2
      bridge-domain 2
     service instance 3 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 3
      bridge-domain 3
    #Nexus 56xx
    interface e1/5
      switchport mode trunk
      switchport trunk allow vlan 1,2,3
