Cisco 3548 Switch Failure

We have OpenVMS running on a Streams Environment OSI protocol connecting to a Cisco 3548 switch with fiber GBIC trunk ports. The ports display link lights, but network connection to a Windows NT 4.0 Server (Service Pack 6) with Allied Telesyn NICs (half-duplex) fails with LAN Connection Errors reported on DHCP Client Computers. However, when the Switch is bypassed, and directly connected to the Server, problem disappears. Do I have a duplex mismatch problem or IOS release issue?

You have to check to see how the switchports are configured , by default the speed is auto/auto , if the ports are hardcoded to a specific speed and duplex then you probably have a speed/duplex mismatch. Match both ends of the links , if nics are auto then the switchport should be auto . If the nics are hard set to a speed/duplex then you have to set the switchport the same.

  • Cisco 3750x 24 port poe switch failure

what is the chance of cisco 3750x 24 port poe switch failure? is backup necessary for this ? please answer me in details.

If you have a Cisco switch with, at least, one faulty port you RMA the appliance.
There is nothing more detailed than that.

  • How many BGP peers does the 3548 switch support?

Is it possible to run more than 40 peers on a single switch? What is the limitation if not?

    Hi ,
You can have 40 BGP peers , IPV4 unicast routes handled by hardware is only 24000 .Enusre all your BGP peering routing updates is within this limits .

  • Preparation For Switch Failure?

I've been tasked by my IT director with developing a plan for when a switch fails at our two locations. Redundancy and HA aren't part of this plan. Instead, I've been asked to focus on replacing a failed switch with an identical appliance. We have three 3560G 48 port swtiches in one locaiton and seven 3750Gs at our other location. We've purchased one of each as a backup. I understand the method of configuring the replacement switches in the event of a failure, but what I'm stuck on is developing a plan that presents the quickest most efficient and clean process. We do have room in our rack at the location utilizing 3560G switches, but no room in the rack where the 3750s are housed.
How have you planned for switch failure? What are the best practices?

Ok, let me give you a "funky" method which incorporates two processes:  Zero-Touch SmartInstall and EEM.
Let's start with the easy part:  EEM
For this process to work, you need to have a non-MS TFTP server.  Linux/Unix is preferred because of the way the files are written.  This EEM script is invoked when someone saves the config of your appliance.  When this happens the appliance will automatically send a copy of the configuration to the remote TFTP server of your choice.  The filename will be named is this syntax:  Switch_name-Month-Day-Hour-Minues-Second-Timezone-version
Another thing, if no one has saved the config for a week, then the switch will still copy the startup-config to the TFTP server of your choice.
    Ok, here's the script:
    archive log config
       logging enable   hidekeys path tftp:///$h- write-memory time-period 10080
Ok, now this solves the problem of an "updated config".  Next, the replacement.
There's a process called Zero-Touch SmartInstall.  What this does:
    1.  You have a new switch, fresh from the box, no configuration whatsoever;
    2.  You connect the new switch to the Director (explained later) via the ethernet port;
    3.  You power up the new switch and YOU DO NOTHING;
    4.  The new switch will talk to the Director.  The Director will provide the new switch with an IP Address (via VLAN 1).  The Director determines that the new switch does not have a config and running an IOS with is not "standard".  The Director will push the config to the new switch's startup-config (the running-config still empty) and then the IOS will get pushed to the new switch;
    5.  The new switch will reboot with the correct IOS specified and a full-working configuration.
Ok.  So let's run the scenario.  You have a failed switch at either one of the sites.
Using the above EEM, you have a full-blown working config.  The latest one to boot!
The site with a dead switch has a switch capable of being a Director and a TFTP server.  So you copy the working config from your TFTP server to the Director.  Configure the Director switch.  Cisco sends the replacement unit to the site (instead of your location).  You instruct the person on-site to connect the new switch to the Director and power up the switch.  New switch gets the working config and an IOS upgrade/downgrade.
All in all, your new replacment switch is ready in 30 minutes.  Tops.

  • Nexus 3548 Switch doesn't recognize command " vtp mode Server / Client"

    Hi Community.
I have a brand new Nexus 3548 switch. And I did the vtp setup:
    vtp version 2
    vtp password ******
    vtp domain *****
Every thing is ok, but If I use the command "vtp mode server" the switch doesn't know that command. Even it doesn't know the "vtp mode" subcommand?
    What's the problem ?
    Best regards patrick

The Nexus 3548 supports only Transparent mode:
Step 5 vtp mode {transparent| off} Sets the VTP mode to transparent or off.

    I have no clue why.

  • Packet loss when pinging from/to a cisco 3560e switch

I see Packet loss when pinging from/to a cisco 3560e switch. CPU utilization is normal.
Switches are running with IOS c3560e-universalk9-mz.122-35.SE5.bin.
Packet loss is observed for all the devices irrespective of directly connected or remote devices.
If i do self pinging, there are no packet loss.
I don't see any error on interface.
Can anyone please help me in resolving this issue.

  • FC-2GB module part number for cisco 4503 switch

    Dear Sir,
We hv a SAN switch MDS-9216 with FC-2GB ports.
We want to connect the SAN switch to our newly installed cisco 4503 switch which modules is required in the cisco 4503 switch to connect the SAN switch FC-2GB ports.
    Regards
    Deepak

    Deepak,
Can you explain why you want to do this?
The Catalyst 4503 is an ethernet switch and does not support FC-2G interfaces. If you want to enable IP access to your storage, you would need an IP storage services module in your MDS 9216. This would then provide GE interfaces which you could connect to your Catalyst 4503. You could then provide IP-based hosts access to FC-connected storage using iSCSI for instance.
    Regards
    Rob.

  • Embeded Event Manager on cisco 3560 switch

Can someone help me please? I have EEM configured on cisco 3560 switch. The configuration is below. I want that switch inform me through email when device with particilular IP address become unavailable. For some reason this configuration is not good and I can't tell why. I already try to debug this with debug event manager action mail but didn't see any output .
    ip sla 11
    icmp-echo ip address
    frequency 20
ip sla schedule 11 life forever start-time now
    event manager applet device-TEST
    event snmp oid 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.42.1.2.9.1.6.11 get-type exact entry-op lt entry-val "2" poll-interval 20
    trigger occurs 5 period 120
action 02.0 mail server "ip address" to "[email protected]" from "[email protected]" subject "device is down"

The mail part looks good, I'm not sure you are hitting the trigger right.
Why not do a track on the ip sla instead of the snmp stuff?
Here's a good example of that.

  • Converting Eth port to FC port in a cisco 6001 switch

    Hi,
Back to forum after a long time. I have one issue to discuss regarding cisco 6001 switch. We purchased a new 6001 switch. Want to convert some of the Ethernet ports out of total 48 to FC to join the switch into a existing fabric.
cisco Nexus 6001 Chassis ("Norcal 64 Supervisor")  - This is what H/W version look like from show version command.
In the past, we have quite a few Cisco 5548UP switch and the way convert the Ethernet port into FC port is, by going to correct slot/module and then
    (config)# slot 1
    (config-slot)# port 41-48 type fc
Then "reload" willl complete the conversion. But in the new 6001 switch, it throws the following error when above command is typed. We have full license for the switch including  FC_FEATURES_PKG
"ERROR: Module type doesn't support this CLI"
We are running firmware : 6.0(2)N2(2)
Any help in this regard will be helpful.
    Thanks.

    I have this exact same error;

  • Trouble with Windows7 and Gigabit link on Cisco 3560X switch

    Hello,
In my company, we are using Cisco IP Phones 7945G (with 2 gigabit network ports) and Cisco 3560X-48P (1GB ports) switches for our users.
Our client computers are running on Windows 7 SP1 (64bit - Enterprise edition) and are connected behind the IP Phone. We use a "Boradcom
Xtreme Gigabit" onboard network card on the computers. All ports (on the switch site and IP Phone side) and on the network card of the computer are configured in "auto negotiation". Duplex and speed are set to "auto".
We tried now to deploy a new engineering software and we are facing a very strange problem. This means that the engineer software fails to download some files from the server. We are using a flat network, all the servers and computers are on the same network segment with no firewall inbetween.
The firewall and Anti-virus on the computers are configured to allow all incoming/outing connections.
To troubleshoot, I tried to change all the network cables but I still get same result --> download fails.
I connected the client computer directly to the Cisco 3560X switch, without the IP Phone and I get the same result.
I installed a separate network card from INTEL (Intel PRO1000 PT) but I get the same result.
As last test, I have connected to same client computer directly to a Cisco 2960-8TC switch (100Mbit; auto negotiate) and here is working fine. The software successfully downloads all the files from the server.
If I connect the computer behind the Cisco 7945 IP Phone, set the speed and duplex of the PC-Port on the Cisco IP Phone 7945G to "100MBit/full duplex" is also working fine.
Is there any know issue with Windows7 and Gigabit network connections?
Do I need to set any Registry key on my Windows 7?
The firmware version of my Cisco 3560X-48P switch is 12.2(53)SE2; do I need to update it?
The firmware version of the IP Phone 7945G is 9.2.1.
Thanks in advanced for your help.
    Marc Hoffmann

Hello, Thanks for your answers. First of all, I have updated the firmware of my Cisco Catalyst 3560X-48P switch to the version 12.2(55)SE5. Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem. As second step, I ran an TDR test on my 3560X switch but I do not get any result. The "Pair status" always says "not completed". Even if I wait for 5 minutes, the status remains at "Not completed". Am I doing something wrong ? To do the TDR test, I use the commande "test cable-diagnostics tdr interface gigabitEthernet 0/XY". For your information, the port gigabitEthernet 0/XY is in a "Connected" status when I run the "show int status" command. Jeff, I think there is no issue on the server side, because if I connect my workstation on a 100MB switch (example Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC-L) the application works absolutely fine. Also, if I run the application locally on the server, it works fine. As next step, I will connect the workstation directly on our backbone switch and try the same test. Is there perhaps any Registry key in our Windows7 which could cause this trouble? If you have any other ideas or options, please let me know. Thanks a lot, Marc Hoffmann

  • Remote Command Tool for Cisco Routers/Switches

Is anyone aware of any tools or scripts out there which allow preconfigured commands to be remotely run again Cisco Router/Switches and display the output result?
I'm looking for a tool which I can give our Service Desk personnel that will allow them to select from a list of commands enter a target IP Address of a router/switch and then the tool will display the vlan table or the running config of a particular switch-port so they can see if its configured on the correct data vlan or its missing its voice vlan etc.
For example a Service Desk Operator needs to check what vlan a switch-port is on. So they open the tool, enter the switches IP address and the port number and select an option like "display a switch-ports vlan" and the tool will login into the switch in the background run a show command on the switch and then output the result.
    Thanks.

Check out rConfig. You will be able to run multiple instances of it i.e. one instance for your standard configuration backups and another for more specific configuration downloads info like show vlan bri commands etc for service desk staff to view.
You could also use the IOS menu function and create menus or role based access on each of your devices for your users.
    Regards
    Stephen

  • Multiple context on Cisco Content Switching

    Hi Everyone
I had new case with Cisco Content Switching design. The current network has two Cisco Content Module (CSM) and each of them response for switching content on one Vlan.
Now i want to reconfigure it, to meet the redundancy requirement. But i don't know Cisco Content Module have same idea of design with ACE on Route Mode.
I want configure CSM with two or more vlan pair in routed mode and it can HA between each other.
    Thanks
    Phai La Quy

    Hi Phai,
Yes you can configure CSM in routed mode with clients in one VLAN and server in another. Pasting the link for your reference. You can find more in routing and switching guide.

  • Emergency Responder and Cisco 3850 Switches

I'm running Cisco ER V8.5, and recently installed new Cisco 3850 Switches. All the phones connected to the 3850 switches show a "unlocated" status. I've check the hardware compatibility Matrix for ER V8.5 and the 3850 is not on it.
What are my options for locating these phones in ER and assigning them to an ERL. Manually defining the phones? Is there a patch or update to ER V8.5 that would make a 3850 compatible?

I haven't used the 3850's with ER yet so can't speak to that specifically, but generally speaking you have more flexibility using location by subnets vs switches.  Scalability-wise, you can add way more subnets than switches.  There's more going on under the hood if you're locating by switches so the process overhead is greater.
The only downside with using subnets is if you need to get more granular with your locations than your deployed subnets allow (ie a single voice subnet for an entire building but you need to define and assign locations at the floor level).  As long as you've been a little forward thinking on the route/switch side, you'll be fine.
    hope that helps,
    will
