Cisco 4-Port ISDN-BRI Network Module

Cisco 4-Port ISDN-BRI Network Module
what does the BRI mean?
I have this module in a 2600 series router. Can it be used for basic LAN connection (like a hub)?

First, to answer your question: No, you cannot.
ISDN is a Telco technology and protocol suite.
"BRI" stands for "Basic Rate Interface," also described as "2B+D" for two Bearer channels and a "D" channel, which is used for control signaling in some configurations, and additional bandwidth in others.
Max throughput is either 128K (2 X 56K or 64Kbps per channel) or 144Kbps (2B+16K that may be available in the D channel depending on your config.
ISDN requires an intermediate telco-style switch between the clients and can't be used back-to-back directly.
Good Luck

  • ISDN BRI Network side to Video conferencing unit

I would like to know if I can use a Cisco router (1760) to provide BRI's to a video conferencing unit. I would like the router to be configured for the NETWORK side so essentially it appears as the PSTN. At the main site I have a Cisco CallManager server that I would like to take in video calls from other offices and have CM basically perform the call setup to the video device connected to the 1760 router. The 1760 would connect to the CM via MGCP.

Unfortuneatly not - IOS will not switch non voice calls through BRI ports - video calls use a data bearer capability.
There is video support coming out soon for Call Manager - keep an eye out for it.

  • ISDN BRI U

    Hi All,
I recently purchased Cisco 2811 with ISDN BRI U HWIC for ISDN connectivity. Unfortunately, when I connect the card to my ISDN NT box, the light on the ISDN NT box keeps flashing signifying no connectivity, while there are no signs of light behind the HWIC card either. When I swapped this out with a normal ISDN BRI S/T card, I can see a steady light on the NT box and also light behind the HWIC on the router meaning there is connectivity between the router and the ISDN NT box.
A quick check on Cisco website shows that these type of cards require RJ-49C connector (see site below)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5949/data_sheet_c78_439537.html
Can someone be kind enough to let me know if/why normal RJ-45 cables cannot be used? Also, I am struggling to  get information online on these RJ-49C connectors.
    Thanks
    Austin

ISDN needs proper cabling, not Ethernet cabling.
The pinour is in the product manual.

I assume it's down to the UC license installed on the device but not sure. Does the ISDN BRI interface behave in different way under this license?

  • ISDN BRI connection won't stay up

    Hi all,
I'm trying to get the S/T port on 3 routers to connect thru ISDN BRI. Thus far I've only been able to get this to work on a 1601.
My attempts on an 878 and a soho96 are less succesfull.
Both are able to establish a connection, but it won't stick.
Attached is the output of the debug isdn q921. The top shows the succesfull connection on the 1601, the bottom shows the other result. The only discrepancy I can find is the lack of a IS.DN BR0: TX -> INFOc message after the tei exchange is succesfull.
I am in the dark however on whether this is a symptom or the cause of the problem. Searches on the cisco domain don't turn up much on this part of the layer 2 troubleshooting.
Any thoughts are welcome on this subject.
    Regards
    Wouter

    Hello,
there is an earlier thread (see the link below), where the problem was related to the fact that the 878 needs the Advanced Enterprise IOS (and not the Advanced IP Services IOS) for the ISDN interface to function, you might want to check if you are running into the same issue.

  • Problem connecting isdn bri voice interface to pstn

i'm trying to configure my ISDN BRI NT/TE voice interface card (VIC-2BRI-NT/TE) on router 3825 to link to my PSTN provider. This must allow my Cisco IP phones to pass call to the PSTN through my call manager 4.1.
I suscribe to two isdn line. The provider told me that the SWITCH TYPE is VN6 (COTE d'IVOIRE or Ivory Coast).
For my bri configuration, see file "interfaces configuration..."
My problem is that when i pass call from my Ip telephony network, the first call goes well. But after this first call, when i type the command isdn status, i can see that the layer 1 of my isdn interfaces are DEACTIVATED, and after a few minutes, it turn back to ACTIVE. During these minuite, i can't pass any call through my isdn interface.
for outputs of show isdn status command, and isdn debug q931 commands
see file "show isdn status and debug..."
Notice: when the status of the isdn layer is in the deactvated status, i can receive call from the pstn, but i can't passe call to pstn (the state changes to ACTIVE when incomming call from pstn arrive, but still stay DEACTIVATED when outgoing call is initiated)
    Please help me

I've entered the "isdn transition-delay 1" interface command and things seem to work well.According to the IOS help on my router, this command clears the ISDN D-CHANNEL after a delay of 1 second.
But i would like to get more information on this command, and also on the isdn layer 2 and 3 timers, and even possible on all the "isdn" interface command option.
    THANKS

  • ISDN BRI layer 1 & layer 2 do not sustain "active" statuses

    Hi Expert,
I have some routers which can not sustain the ISDN layer 1 & layer 2 statuses correctly. Whenever, the ISDN line is manually activated or the ISDN BRI ports are manually reset, the layer 1 & layer 2 statuses become active but they become deactivated after a while. I have changed the ISDN module and the same symptom is observed. Would you advise what is the cause and resolution. Your advice in this matter is greatly appreciated.

  • Connecting to an ISDN BRI on a router from a PSTN line from remote site..!!

    Friends,
I have a 1812 at HO with WIC1 BS/T Card, connected it to an ISDN BRI line. One of my critical remote location uses Leased circuit to reach my HO Router. But in case if LL goes down, some of the important PC's at the remote site should be able to dial to HO Router BRI Number using PSTN line, get connected and continue, ip address assigned from HO Router and access the application... Is any way available...

    Hi Arnab.
You need to configure dial backup through AUX port. You need to connect a normal PSTN line to a modem which in turn is connected to your AUX port. You will have to configure a chat script which you can find in the attachmnet. The attachment is a working example in one of my routers.
You also have to create an ASYNC interface. Check that in the attached file also

  • How to setup a usb printer on the usb port of a network storage drive

I have searched the forums and dont see any real info on this..
I have  a usb based officejet 7590 , winxp, and a iomega home media network storage drive
the printer works fine when I install it on the local usb port of the laptop
    BUT
its not clear how to connect it ot the usb port of the network drive.
DO I have to resinstall it as a network printer?
DO I have to resinstall device drivers if I already installed it as a usb printer for the local port?
Can I use the scan/fax functions if I do it right?
    thx!

OK, I will use it as a bookstand...
Since I obviously don't know enough about networks I will stay away from 'professional' products like the Cisco products.
The user interface and the documentation of these products are clearly made by nerds for nerds...
    Thanks for your help.

  • Content Engine Network Module for Caching File Server Objects

We have a content engine network module for a 2821 router located at a branch office that we'd like to use for clients to obtain locally cached file objects from a Windos server located at our headquarters or corporate office. I've been looking for some sample configs or documentation that will show me that this is possible and on how to do it since this is my first time ever doing. All I was able to find so far was the link below under "Support of Preloading of NTLM Authenticated Objects", but it seems incomplete in providing configuration tasks that most CCO doc's usually provide. Has anyone else had any luck finding some useful doc's or sample configs to get this accomplish? Thanks in advance.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/webscale/uce/acns55/55ldg/urlfiltr.htm#wp1158213

You can't cache Windows Files using the Cache Engines.
You CAN do this using WAFS though. I'd suggest looking at the WAFS (or upcoming WAAS) products, which use WCCP like the Cache Engines to transparently redirect Windows File Sharing requests.

  • IPS network Module, need help!!!

    Folks,
I recently installed IPS network module in my 3662 router. I am having problems making the IPS log anything.
When i access the web interface of the IPS, i see only 1 interface available under virtual sensor, the interface is fast 0/1. and the media type it shows is Backplain.
I am confused, i thought that fast 0/1 on the IPS network module was the management interface??? on the IPS?
Why don't i see another interface that is connected to the backplain of the switch???
    Many thanks

There are 2 interfaces on the NM-CIDS.
In version 5.0 they are called:
    FastEthernet0/0 and FastEthernet0/1
FastEthernet0/0 is the external copper interface that you can plug a cable in to. It is the command and control port for managing the NM-CIDS. It can not be used for monitoring (can not be applied to the virtual sensor)
FastEthernet0/1 is the backplane interface. It receives packets from the router for monitoring. This is the interface that should be applied to the virtual sensor.

Do I need to allocate a new subnet for interface service-engine1/0?  Or can is be an IP address in my 10.1.1.1/24 subnet?  What's the best practice?
If it's a new subnet then I assume I need to add it to eigrp, right?
Here is the sample from the Configuration Guide...
    interface service-engine1/0
ip address 10.0.0.20 255.255.255.0  <--- does this have to be it's own subnet, what's best practice?
service-module integrated-service-engine ip address 10.0.0.30 255.255.255.0 <-- this has to be in the same subnet as above, right?
    service-module integrated-service-engine ip default-gateway 10.0.0.20 <-- is this always the "int service-engine1/0" IP?
Sorry for the shotgun question approach.  Thank you in advance.

    Hi Tod,
The most common scenario is to allocate a new subnet for the module.  Since the module will need IP connectivity to the Central Manager, you should advertise it via EIGRP (or whatever routing protocol you are using).
Here are the answers to your command specific questions:
ip address 10.0.0.20 255.255.255.0  <--- does this have to be  it's own subnet, what's best practice?
    > See above.  The most common scenario is to allocate a new IP subnet.
service-module  integrated-service-engine ip address 10.0.0.30 255.255.255.0 <-- this  has to be in the same subnet as above, right?
    > Yes.  This is the IP address that is assigned to the NME-WAE.
    service-module  integrated-service-engine ip default-gateway 10.0.0.20 <-- is this  always the "int service-engine1/0" IP?
    > Correct.

  • Isolation network module

I have a FP-1000 network module with a FP-AI-100, FP-DI-300 and FP-DO-403. I am using RS-232 serial communication. I have fried both of my computer's serial ports. Nothing happen to the network module or I/O modules. Can any one tell me what happen? How do I prevent this? I think I need an isolation serial board. Can anybody confirm that?
    Yan

    Hello Yan,
I am not sure how your computer's serial ports got fried, I've actually never run into this before. The only thing I can think of is either a defective (or out of spec) power supply for the computer or a defective (or out of spec) power supply for the fieldpoint controller. If you had a serial isolation board, it's possible that it would help, but I'm somewhat doubtful. The isolation boards provide isolation from port to port. So you could still fry those ports depending on what is currently frying your ports. Perhaps you could give us some more information about your system set up, the conditions surrounding the frying of the computer's com ports, and any other information or troubleshooting you have done that may be relevant.
    Thanks,

  • Cisco 2600 router with 4A/S module can be terminal server

I have a cisco 2600 router with 4A/S module, can it become the terminal server? If yes, which kind of octal cable should I choose to connect to other cisco routers console ports? Thanks a lot

The commands mean that R1's console is connected using the first RJ-45 cable and is available on port 2001, R2's console is connected using the second RJ-45 cable and is available on port 2002 and so on. Remember that the ports are numbered as 2000 plus the line number. Hence, the first port is 2001. If you have more than eight devices and have connected a second CAB-OCTAL-ASYNC cable then you need to add a similar configuration line with the port numbers starting from 2009 till 2016.
In your configuration u configured 9 ports. So please add second cable for another 8 ports.
To connect to the console of a device, telnet to the terminal server router's loopback address and specify the port number associated to the device. For example, to connect to console of router R1 (from our example) type telnet 192.168.12.1 2001 in the Run dialog box from your PC.
