Cisco 4506 Switch Hanging
I have got a 4506 switch with Sup V 10GE. This switch is in VTP domain, but in VTP transparent mode. I has got hanged twice, could anybody tell me the reason what could have happend.
There was no configuration change been done to that switch.
Hi Suresh,
CSCsb61172 can be confirmed by looking at the output of "show platform hardware interface all".
eg:
CAT4510#show platform hardware interface all
Global Hardware Gigaport State
RxIpg : 6
TxIpg : 264
FreeListCount : 329 <<<-----
Note that typical values of the free list count are between 20,000 and 64,000 depending on the traffic
being switched. A count of 329 above is too low and indicates a memory leak.
So if you see the number decreasing constantly, then you are running into this issue. The fix is in 12.2(25)EWA5, 12.2(31)SG, and higher.

Bobby

Cisco 4506 switch in Err-disable mode
I have a Cisco 4506 switch and its 10 gig interface is in error disable mode.I tried Shut and no shut the port couple of times but it transits from up to down number of times and then to error-disable. Did anyone else encountered this issue before. kindly advise the solution for the same. thanks
Hi Shariq,
Can you post the output of the show interface status err-disable ? That output contains the reason for putting your port into err-disabled state.
Best regards,

Hi ,
We have a cisco 4506 switch with the IOS version of 12.2-50.SG1. I would like to know whether any latest IOS version will support redirect ACL with the deny statement for WCCP on a client interface.
Switch details:
cisco WS-C4506-E (MPC8245) processor (revision 7) with 524288K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FOX1407G5P7
MPC8245 CPU at 333Mhz, Supervisor IV
Last reset from Reload
5 Virtual Ethernet interfaces
192 FastEthernet interfaces
26 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
403K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
Regards,
BalaHey CJ,
Option 1: another option you might consider is intercepting closer to the WAN edge, if that's an available option for you.
Again, like Patrick mentioned it depends on your network / IP design but if you intercept closer to the WAN edge you should be able to avoid engineering a redirect ACL altogether.
Option 2: depending on the 3750 platform and code upgrade options, some of the latest 3750 IOS versions include support for deny entries for WCCP redirect ACLs. Check out these release notes (look at the very last bullet point in this list):
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750x_3560x/software/release/12.2_58_se/release/notes/OL24338.html#wp1009434
Hope this helps!

Juniper SSG 20 optical interface connection to Cisco 4506
Let me post the same issue to the Optical forum too:
Hello,
Here's the problem.
There's one Juniper SSG 20 firewall with JX-SFP-1GE-SX multimode fiber interface (850nm) (which I can control) and I have to connect it to Cisco 4506 switch which has WS-X4306-GB module and WS-G5484 GBIC interface (also multimode fiber).
SSG 20 shows link up. Cisco shows link down.
Unfortunatelly I don't have Cisco 4506 to play with, but I have to find solution for this system. Cisco 4506 show version is:
#show version

I was able to replicate issue with Cisco 3524 swtich (SSG20 shows link up, Cisco link down, physical down), and solution that I found was to enter interface level command: (config-if)#no negotiation auto. After this command, everything was showing state as "UP" and working as expected (there was traffic going through the optic)
When I suggested this command as a solution, administrator from the other side was claiming that this command returns "invalid input detected at ^ marker".
Can anyone tell me is there any known issue between those two products, and maybe alternative to this command, so I can turn off this IEEE 802.3z negotiation if that's the problem.
Thanks for assistance
Cheers
M.So I found my solution, but I want to know why is like this.
The solution was to enter on Cisco the following command:
(config-if)#speed nonegotiate
From this link: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.1E/native/configuration/guide/sw_int.html
I can see on section: Configuring Link Negotiation on Gigabit Ethernet Ports that this command is doing negotiation exchange of flow-control parameters, remote fault information, and duplex information. Link negotiation is enabled by default.
And the funniest thing of all is, this speed nonegotiate command doesn't deal with the speed at all :)
Can someone confirm me what are remote fault information and flow control parameters -

I have Cisco 4506 with Sup V. It is has been joined with one of the VTP domain, but the switch is in Client mode. There are around 10 switches which are connecteing to that switch with trunk ports.
The switches which are connecting, some are in Transparent Mode and some in Client mode.
This switch is a root switch. The problem what I am facing with this switch is it has got hanged twice and restarted once. There is no config changes which are been made since it has been installed.
Can anybody please help me out.have you physically changed the switch from one place to another, because even an voltage problem could also lead in such situationz, apart from this, you also try upgrading the OS in the switch. becuase changing the VTP domain it is not at all possible in making a switch getting restarted or hang.

Can i lower cisco 4506 power consumption.
I just bought old cisco 4506 with SUP4 + 2x48GB 3x48FE poe and have a plan to use it in my small office. (>20 port GB used)
I heard this chassis is power sucker so i need to lower it power consumption. can you tell me what i can do? such as
shutdown module that i doesn't used.
shutown some switchport.
power off 2nd power supply.
or your guys has alternative way ex. Cisco EnergyWise?
ThanksI'm using EnergyWise. I don't see any relevance as to WHY you would want to use it. I also don't see any information about your PoE requirement, hence, no comment on how you'd like to save money by powering down PoE.
The power requirement for the 4506 would, most likely, be LESS than getting six PoE switches individually.
I mean, if you don't use PoE, the line cards will only draw what is required. So trying to save money from energy consumption of the chassis won't make a lot of sense. -
I have a cisco 4506 with supervisor Engine IV.Initially when i put the switch on the supervisor engine light turns orange.after some diagnosis i found out that one of the fans on the power supply wasnt functioning properly.when i remove this power supply and power the switch the sup engine turns green. However the ethernet interfaces and gigabit ethernet interfaces on the line card r down no traffic is being processed on the switch.what could be the problem. Is there a way u should configure the 4506 to process packets
Hi Kwak,
Oki now let us resolve it!!!
Yes by default all the ports are into vlan 1 so it depends if you want to assign the ports into any other vlan you have to create vlan first. But ports will remain in down down state till the the time you connect any network device to it. Can you please confirm if you have connected any device like workstation or any other device to any port.
All the ports remain in down down state if they are not active.
Try to connect some device it should work

Packet loss when pinging from/to a cisco 3560e switch
I see Packet loss when pinging from/to a cisco 3560e switch. CPU utilization is normal.
Switches are running with IOS c3560e-universalk9-mz.122-35.SE5.bin.
Packet loss is observed for all the devices irrespective of directly connected or remote devices.
If i do self pinging, there are no packet loss.
I don't see any error on interface.
Can anyone please help me in resolving this issue.TCB Local Address Foreign Address (state)

FC-2GB module part number for cisco 4503 switch
Dear Sir,
We hv a SAN switch MDS-9216 with FC-2GB ports.
We want to connect the SAN switch to our newly installed cisco 4503 switch which modules is required in the cisco 4503 switch to connect the SAN switch FC-2GB ports.
Regards
DeepakDeepak,
Can you explain why you want to do this?
The Catalyst 4503 is an ethernet switch and does not support FC-2G interfaces. If you want to enable IP access to your storage, you would need an IP storage services module in your MDS 9216. This would then provide GE interfaces which you could connect to your Catalyst 4503. You could then provide IP-based hosts access to FC-connected storage using iSCSI for instance.

Embeded Event Manager on cisco 3560 switch
Can someone help me please? I have EEM configured on cisco 3560 switch. The configuration is below. I want that switch inform me through email when device with particilular IP address become unavailable. For some reason this configuration is not good and I can't tell why. I already try to debug this with debug event manager action mail but didn't see any output .
ip sla 11
icmp-echo ip address
frequency 20
ip sla schedule 11 life forever start-time now
event manager applet device-TEST
event snmp oid 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.42.1.2.9.1.6.11 get-type exact entry-op lt entry-val "2" poll-interval 20
trigger occurs 5 period 120
action 02.0 mail server "ip address" to "[email protected]" from "[email protected]" subject "device is down"The mail part looks good, I'm not sure you are hitting the trigger right.
Why not do a track on the ip sla instead of the snmp stuff?
Here's a good example of that.

Converting Eth port to FC port in a cisco 6001 switch
Hi,
Back to forum after a long time. I have one issue to discuss regarding cisco 6001 switch. We purchased a new 6001 switch. Want to convert some of the Ethernet ports out of total 48 to FC to join the switch into a existing fabric.
cisco Nexus 6001 Chassis ("Norcal 64 Supervisor") - This is what H/W version look like from show version command.
In the past, we have quite a few Cisco 5548UP switch and the way convert the Ethernet port into FC port is, by going to correct slot/module and then
(config)# slot 1
(config-slot)# port 41-48 type fc
Then "reload" willl complete the conversion. But in the new 6001 switch, it throws the following error when above command is typed. We have full license for the switch including FC_FEATURES_PKG
"ERROR: Module type doesn't support this CLI"
We are running firmware : 6.0(2)N2(2)
Any help in this regard will be helpful.
Thanks.I have this exact same error;

Trouble with Windows7 and Gigabit link on Cisco 3560X switch
Hello,
In my company, we are using Cisco IP Phones 7945G (with 2 gigabit network ports) and Cisco 3560X-48P (1GB ports) switches for our users.
Our client computers are running on Windows 7 SP1 (64bit - Enterprise edition) and are connected behind the IP Phone. We use a "Boradcom
Xtreme Gigabit" onboard network card on the computers. All ports (on the switch site and IP Phone side) and on the network card of the computer are configured in "auto negotiation". Duplex and speed are set to "auto".
We tried now to deploy a new engineering software and we are facing a very strange problem. This means that the engineer software fails to download some files from the server. We are using a flat network, all the servers and computers are on the same network segment with no firewall inbetween.
The firewall and Anti-virus on the computers are configured to allow all incoming/outing connections.
To troubleshoot, I tried to change all the network cables but I still get same result --> download fails.
I connected the client computer directly to the Cisco 3560X switch, without the IP Phone and I get the same result.
I installed a separate network card from INTEL (Intel PRO1000 PT) but I get the same result.
As last test, I have connected to same client computer directly to a Cisco 2960-8TC switch (100Mbit; auto negotiate) and here is working fine. The software successfully downloads all the files from the server.
If I connect the computer behind the Cisco 7945 IP Phone, set the speed and duplex of the PC-Port on the Cisco IP Phone 7945G to "100MBit/full duplex" is also working fine.
Is there any know issue with Windows7 and Gigabit network connections?
Do I need to set any Registry key on my Windows 7?
The firmware version of my Cisco 3560X-48P switch is 12.2(53)SE2; do I need to update it?
The firmware version of the IP Phone 7945G is 9.2.1.
Thanks in advanced for your help.
Marc HoffmannHello, Thanks for your answers. First of all, I have updated the firmware of my Cisco Catalyst 3560X-48P switch to the version 12.2(55)SE5. Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem. As second step, I ran an TDR test on my 3560X switch but I do not get any result. The "Pair status" always says "not completed". Even if I wait for 5 minutes, the status remains at "Not completed". Am I doing something wrong ? To do the TDR test, I use the commande "test cable-diagnostics tdr interface gigabitEthernet 0/XY". For your information, the port gigabitEthernet 0/XY is in a "Connected" status when I run the "show int status" command. Jeff, I think there is no issue on the server side, because if I connect my workstation on a 100MB switch (example Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC-L) the application works absolutely fine. Also, if I run the application locally on the server, it works fine. As next step, I will connect the workstation directly on our backbone switch and try the same test. Is there perhaps any Registry key in our Windows7 which could cause this trouble? If you have any other ideas or options, please let me know. Thanks a lot, Marc Hoffmann

I've just spent 4 hours on the line w/ Verizon support agents who were all very nice, but nobody could solve my problem. Without anything else happening on my phone, I hit an icon to launch an app, and it takes like 2 minutes for anything to happen.

What's the point in TV Essentials?
Six months ago I took out Telephone, ADSL Broadband and YouView with BT. Part of this bill is £5 a month for TV Essentials. Apart from a subsidised YouView box, what do you get for your fiver? Is there any point in not cancelling the TV Essentials
