Cisco 79XX phones time question

I have a basic question that many may know the answer to. Cisco phones plugged into a CUCM 5,6,7,8x call manager - do the phones request the time from the CUCM cluster or does the CUCM cluster broadcast out the time to the phones? The question has been brought up and with a little searching the web and the forums - I have not found a clear answer.
Thanks.

In general all the phones get their time from call manager.  Depending on model 7940/7960 will get the time with the offset applied from call manager, whereas the 7941/7961/7970 phones will get their time as UTC/GMT and then apply the offset locally.  SIP phones use the NTP phone reference in call manager to contact the NTP server specified and then apply the offset based on their configuration file.

  • Schedule time to shut down cisco IP phones

    Dear All,
i would like to ask if there is any way to schedule time on CUCM 7 allowing us to shut down cisco ip phones during week ends, and which cisco ip phone models that support this feature.
    regards

    Hassan,
I'm no phone guy but if you want to POWER OFF the phones outside office hours there are serious implications to consider.
If your phones have PCs connected to them, there's a large chance that when the phones go off, the PCs will not be able to reach the network (because VoIP phones do not have bypass functionality).
Another thing is in an emergency, no one can make outgoing/incoming calls.
If this is what you want then you could try EnergyWise if you don't have acess to your CUCM services.  Let's say you want to power off your phones at midnight and power up by 5am the next morning (weekdays):

  • Basic Cisco 7960 Phone Question

    Hi, folks:
I am new to Cisco VoIP solution. I would like to set up a Cisco 7960 phone. When I provisioned the phone, I noticed that there is a parameter called "Admin VLAN ID".
Since my phone is connected to an access port of a switch, I believe it should not use any VLAN tagging.
So I am wondering whether this vlan tagging is only applied when a PC is subtended to the phone? If the PC belongs to a different VLAN, does it automatically change the connection to the switch to VLAN trunking?
If no PC is subtended to the phone, then, does the phone automatically turn off VLAN tagging?
I saw the phone got IP address from the local DHCP server, however, I cannot ping it. So does Cisco phone rejects ICMP packet by default?
    Thanks a lot!
    Shixiong

The "Cisco" solution to your problem would be to segment your voice and data networks and run QOS on the network to preserve voice quality. A typical Cisco switch port would look like this.
    interface GigabitEthernet0/4
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport voice vlan 10
    srr-queue bandwidth share 10 10 60 20
    srr-queue bandwidth shape 10 0 0 0
    queue-set 2
    mls qos trust device cisco-phone
    mls qos trust cos
    no mdix auto
    auto qos voip cisco-phone
    spanning-tree portfast
This config would put a phone in VLAN 10 and either a directly attached PC or a PC hanging off the phone into VLAN 1. You would be responsible for making sure the proper routing and DHCP are available for both your Voice and Data network.
If you are just playing around and want to get a 7960 to work in the data network, remove all trunking info and voice vlan info and the phone should boot up with the same IP scheme as a PC on the data network (make sure this DHCP scope has correct option 150 settings - or this test will be very un-eventful for you - phone will not get a config.)
ICMP is not disabled by default, but if you have a phone that thinks it is in the voice vlan (called admin vlan on phone) but an address on the data network, it isn't going to work.

  • Using 802.1X and non-Cisco IP Phones

    Hi there,
Having some questions about an 802.1x/non-Cisco ip phone setup and was hoping to find some answers/user-experience with this setup.
    Main questions i'm facing:
    1) When using non-Cisco ip phones (eg Nortel or Siemens) and a previous authorized client connected behind this ip phone gets disconnected. What will this action do with the authorized state of 802.1X on the switch port? WIll it stay authorized until the reauth timer expires or does it reject communication from any other device?
    2) What about EAPOL-Logoff messages from the ip phone to the switch. Are these only used by Cisco phones when they experience a link-status change on data ports?
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Overall, you need to try and deal with the fact that a machine can disappear from the network and the network may not know about it directly (i.e. Link doesn't go down).
I have no idea what other phones do, but Cisco phones send an EAPOL-Logoff when something is unplugged. This lets the switch know directly, and 1X session start is torn down immediately, closing what would be a security hole.
Fundamentally, re-auth is a workaround only, and this is not the reason to enable re-auth to begin with.
If your phone doesn't send an EAPOL-Logoff in this case, the switch might be left thinking an attack is underway when someone else tries to plug in (with presumably a different MAC). You do NOT want this to occur.
    Hope this helps,

    Hello,
I'm facing exactly the same problem, that is:
    a Cisco SIP Phone 9971 won't register on CME 8.6 running on a 2811
I have read all the postings to this Forum, but I have not been able to solve it.
In my case the commands voice register dn  and  voice register pool are OK.
So frankly, I have no idea what I could be missing.
    I'm pasting the Router's config.
I hope somebody is able to point me in the right direction.
Here is the config.  Thank you!

Page 7 of the following link recommends that you use option 150 with the Cisco 7800 series phones and use option 66 if you cannot use option 150
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7821_7841_7861/10_1/english/admin_guide/PA2D_BK_AB3F74DA_00_admin-7821-7841-7861-10_0/PA2D_BK_AB3F74DA_00_admin-7821-7841-7861-10_0_chapter_01.pdf
    Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
DHCP dynamically allocates and assigns an IP address to network devices.
DHCP enables you to connect an IP phone into the network and have the phone become operational without your needing to manually assign an IP address or to configure additional network parameters.
DHCP is enabled by default. If disabled, you must manually configure the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and a TFTP server on each phone locally.
Cisco recommends that you use DHCP custom option 150. With this method, you configure the TFTP server IP address as the option value. For additional supported DHCP configurations, go to the "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" chapter and the "Cisco TFTP" chapter in the Cisco Unified Communications Manager System Guide.
    Note
If you cannot use option 150, you may try using DHCP option 66.

  • Cisco SIP Phone 9971 won't register on CME 8.6

    Hello,
I'm facing a very strange problem:
    a Cisco SIP Phone 9971 won't register on CME 8.6 running on a 2811
I have read all the related-postings to this and other Forum, but I have not been able to solve it.
One of the "potential solutions" was to make sure that the Phone had a Line configured.
But I think that the commands voice register dn  and  voice register pool are properly configured (see config below)
So frankly, I have no idea what I could be missing.
    I'm pasting the Router's config.
I hope somebody is able to point me in the right direction.
Here is the config.  Thank you!

So apparently the Phone is actually registered!
However, the Phone screens still shows this message: Phone Not Registered.
So frankly I don't understand what's going on!
I really hope somebody can help.  Thanks!

  • Cisco SIP Phone 9971 will not register on CME 8.6

    Hello,
I'm trying to configure a  Cisco SIP Phone 9971,
but it won't register on CME 8.6, which is running on a 2811
The Phone shows this error message: Phone Not Registered.
And when I check the the Status Messages in the Phone, I see the following:
VPN Error: vpn is not configured
Actually, it shows all these 4 messages in a constant Loop:
    12:01:59a SEP189C5DB6BD09.cnf.xml (TFTP)
    12:01:59a No Trust List instaled
    12:01:59a Updating Trust list
12:02:00a VPN Error: VPN is not Configured
It seems that this VPN Error is keeping the Phone from registering.
This is repeated for ever and the Phone never registers; at least that's what it appears.
However, when I do a sh voice register pool, I get the following:

This sh voice register pool  seems to indicate that the Phone has actually registered.
But I still get the  Phone Not Registered   message on the screen!
I did some Debugs and they also seem to indicate that the Phone has indeed registered:

    I'm pasting the Router's config.

VPN is not Configured prints on all phones now with the built-in VPN client if VPN isn't configured.  That's normal and is just cosmetic.  That should not be causing your registration issues.

  • Cisco 7941G phones will not boot up after factory reset.

Cisco 7941G phones will not boot up after factory reset.
    The following happens.
    1. Speaker light lit (Green)
    2. Phone displays a firmware upgrade page (see attachment) for a few minutes. (Doesn't seems to be upgrading, but it "saids" upgrading)
    3. Saw Cisco logo with a Java Powered page.
    4. The whole thing loops again and again...
I think the reason why the phone isn't booting up is because the phone needs to know where to find the configuration/firmware files from a tftp server. I do have a TFTP server, but normally I need to go in settings to change the alternative tftp server, but the thing is that now I can't even press the settings button...
    Please help.

How many phones were reset and upgrading at one time? What is the setting of the TFTP Maximum Serving Count (Advanced TFTP Service Parm) on each of the TFTP servers?
Sounds like too many devices trying to use TFTP at once.

  • Can I configure a 79xx Phone with two busy trigger using UCCE 8.5?

Hi, my name is Eric and I've some doubts to configure my Phones. First of all, I will explain my environment below:
    - UCCE 8.5
    - CM 8.5
    - CVP 8.0
I would like to know if it's supported if I configure a 79xx Phone with 2 busy triggers configuration, because the customer would like to the agent's phone receive two calls per line.
    Thank you very much.

    Eric,
No, this is not supported and stated as such in cisco docs.
Customer will need to designate separate DN for ACD calls and separate DN for DID/personal calls.
    HTH,
    Chris

  • No ringback from cisco ip phones to alcatel Phones

I have a CUCM 7.1.3 integrated with a Alcatel OXO PBX and when a try to place a call from cisco IP-Phones registered on CUCM to phones on PBX, I have no ringback, but  when a place a call from cisco IP-Phones registered on CUCM to PSTN using PBX as it has a PRI line to the local PSTN, I dont have that issue.
The voice gateway connects to PBX using a PRI(E1) running MGCP and QSIG.
    interface Serial 3/1:15
    no ip address
    encapsulation hdlc
    isdn switch-type primary-qsig
    isdn timer T310 120000
    isdn protocol-emulate network
    isdn incoming-voice voice
    isdn bind-l3 ccm-manager
    no cdp enable

You can configure COS values for the Cisco IP Phones so that the voice packets from Cisco IP phone are given more priority over the data packets from the PCs/Hosts. But the same might not be configurable for non Cisco IP Phone. I am not very sure of this. Other than that I guess, you can have all QoS features.

ignore my last post.. I didn't properly read the source code.
Anyway, I got g.711 streaming to work. I started out using the AVTransmit2 sample, but set the audio output format to what is used in the source code posted here. I've also applied the same codec chain described above, and that was it.
I could never get streaming to work using the first RTP streaming method described in the JMF Programmers guide (and this is the method used in the source posted above), but using the RTPManager, things work just fine.

This could be a compatibility issue. Looking at the feature matrix, 15.1 is CME8.8 and only has support for SCCP42.9-2-1S.loads. Even the latest CME (10.5) only has listed support for 9.2.1 on 7962.
I would try downgrading the phone firmware to 9.2.1 and see if you continue to have the issue.

  • Using 79xx Phone PC access port to connect a Netgear 5 port switch

Cisco documentation indicates that on 79xx phones you can "Use the PC access port to connect a network device, such as a computer, to the phone".  What types of problems might be encountered if that device is a Netgear Fast Ethernet Unmanaged FS105 five port switch?  Is there any documentation indicating whether this "supported" or "not supported"?
I know that the speed on the devices connected to the Netgear will be cut to 10/100.  The devices connected to the Netgear would include - at a minimum - a computer and a Cisco wireless access point.  Other devices which might be connected could include additional computers and/or a printer.
The computer(s) would also need to access a distributed video stream daily.
    We are running CallManager 8.6.2.21900-5 with phone types: 7940, 7941, 7945, 7965
Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide.

Will Cisco support you doing this? Not likely.
Will it work? I suppose, in theory, it should. Just don't complain if it doesn't.

  • Integration with Cisco IP Phones

Possible to integrate Lync to Cisco IP Phones?

Depends on what you mean by integrate.  You cannot directly register Cisco phones with Lync, but you have the following options:
Create a SIP trunk (or trunk through a gateway) and connect CUCM to Lync and then you would be able to call back and forth
If you want to repurpose Cisco phones to use with Lync then you can use a third party product from AudioCodes (SPS -
    http://www.audiocodes.com/sps ) or NET (SmartSIP -
