Cisco 881W no longer broadcasting SSID

We've had a Cisco 881W set up in one of our remote offices for a while and the wireless has been fine. Yesterday I got a call saying that the wireless was no longer working.
I went over and it's true, the SSID is no longer broadcasting. I reloaded the router but it's still the same. I tried to get access to the embedded ap and I get this
RTR#service-module wlan-ap 0 session
% telnet connections not permitted from this terminal
RTR#
Now I've not changed anything on the configuration since it went in and it was working before. Has the embedded ap died? The embedded ap is still showing as a component in show hardware.

There is the wlan-gigbitethernet0 which is the switch interface that connects to the AP. That is showing up/up.
A service module wlan-ap0 status shows
RTR#service-module wlan-ap 0 status
Service Module is Cisco wlan-ap0
Service Module supports session via TTY line 2
Service Module is in Steady state
Service Module reset on error is disabled
Service Module heartbeat-reset is enabled
Getting status from the Service Module, please wait..

  • BEF11WS4 ver. 2 no longer broadcasting SSID

Our house took a huge power surge a few days ago from lightening and knocked out many of our computer components. I got a new cable modem, but the Linksys router was still working...or so I thought. Now, it's not broadcasting the SSID no matter what I do. I even updated the firmware. Any suggestions short of getting a new one?

Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power
light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power
cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router &
then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are
solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out
    it will definately work!!

  • Broadcast SSID only on defined Access Points?

I'm using a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 5508, 14x Access Points 1041 and 6x Access Points 1031 in combination with a NCS 1.0.
Is it possible to broadcast SSID'S only on defined Access Points, e.g. AP 1-3,7-10,18? If yes, what have I to do?
    Kind regards
    Kai

Quick question, can you validate the below scenario please
    We have seven SSIDs
WLAN           Dynamc Interface that its mapped to
    WHSE10          VLAN10-10.0.10.0/24
    WHSE20          VLAN20-10.0.20.0/24
    WHSE30          VLAN30-10.0.30.0/24
    WHSE40          VLAN40-10.0.40.0/24
    Office50           VLAN50-10.0.50.0/23
    Office60           VLAN60-10.0.60.0/23
    Guest70           VLAN70-172.16.8.0/23
we have around 40 access points in the warehouse and 20 APs in the office, and we are broadcasting SSIDs everywhere, means office and guest SSID s exist on the WHSE APS and WHSE SSID s exist on office APs.
Does having more SSIDs on the APs affects its power (Signal strength) in anyway?
    APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP- (will add VLAN10,VLAN20,VLAN30,VLAN40 interfaces)
    APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE- (Will add all VLANS-10,20,30,40,50,60 and 70)
APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP-( Will add only office and Guest WLANs- VLAN50,60 and 70)
We won't need to broadcast any WHSE SSIDs in the office area so we will add the Office APS to ----  APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP
The WHSE APS will need to advertise both office and WHSE SSID s but we don't need to broadcast Office SSIDs everywhere in the warehouse, so we assign some APs in WHSE to APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE and some to APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP
How does the client roaming work in the above scenario when they move from APs in APgroup1 to APs in APgroup2 (I don't think this will be any different than normal client roaming from one AP to another AP but I want to make sure)
    Thanks for the help

  • Broadcast to non-broadcast SSID change stops laptop connection

We have started to deploy a CAWLAP migrating autonomous to lightweight.  In the configuration, the SSID was broadcast.  Windows PC and mobile devices had no problem connecting.
Now when we changed it to non-broadcast, windows PC can not access while the mobile devices still can!
The controller (5508) is running 7.2.110.
    Any ideas?  Is this bug?

Not a bug... You probably added the SSID to the client when it was broadcasted, so the wireless client is looking for a broadcasted SSID. In windows, you can click connect even if not broadcasted. Or else remove and add the SSID on the clients again. It a client side issue not the wlc.

  • Broadcast and non-broadcast SSID issues with iPhones and iPads

We have a CIsco wireless infrastructure configured with a public broadcasted ssid and a private non-broadcast ssid that we are experiencing issues with the iPads and iPhones.  The iPad or iPhone will switch between both ssids if defined but keep the original IP address when it switches to the non-broadcast ssid making it unusable.  It shouldn't be switching at all technically.  If the non-broadcast ssid is defined only on the iPhone or iPad, the broadcast ssid pops up and starts asking for authentication information.  I have Cisco looking into this but I'm quite sure this is an Apple bug. Any other device works fine.  We are currently using version 4.3.5(8L2) on the iPads and iPhones.  I do know that if we broadcast both SSIDS, the issue goes away, but I don't want to do that.  Although it doesn't really add any more security, it just isn't advertised, so most people won't see it and avoids a lot of questions. Hopefully there's a simple solution.
    Any ideas apple guys?
Also how does one open an actual trouble ticket with apple?

Did you solve this?  Settings\Wifi\Askto join networks - OFF

  • Does Samsung Galaxy III phones recognized WiFi that does not broadcast SSID?

I recently purchased Samsung Galaxy III phone.  At home, I turned on WiFi SSID broadcast on the router to set up phone to connect to router.  I then turned off SSID broadcast on router, and phone no longer connects to WiFi.  I understand security is better when SSID is not broadcasting, but this phone will not connect now.  Apple products connects just fine.  Why will the phone not connect to a router that does not broadcast SSID event when the information is programmed into the phone?

what revision Actiontec do you have, can you check the service Tag?   it will say REV A, B, C, D etc.....
Also you can verify you are doing the right one by logging in at www.verizon.com/repair and clicking "

  • Non-broadcast ssid = no beaconing?

We were told that even though Cisco AP's can support a ton of different ssid's, it's a good idea to keep that number to minimal, due to the fact that each ssid becons to the lowest data rate.
Does anyone know what the recommended max. number of SSID is?
Also if we simply make the SSID non-broadcast, does the AP still send becon out for that non-broadcast ssid, and therefore make it somewhat better?

Lets be clear what a broadcast is and a beacon is ...
Aps need to beacon. If they do not beacon they dont work cause clients will not know where to find them. With that being said, if you enable 16 SSIDs you will have 16 beacons. These are virtual btw. Also they will all use medium.
If you want to know about the virtual beacons and cisco check out my blog post:
    http://www.my80211.com/home/tag/cisco-virtual-mac-address
    Broadcast / Hide your SSID
There is a field in the beacon that holds your WLAN SSID. You can either hide this or reveal it. If you hide it you lessen the chance of devices finding it. But as Surendra pointed out there is no real security. Becuase there are ways to get the hidden ssid.
So if you hide it or no, no impact to your medium at all.. Why, beacuse the APs still need to beacon ..
    Make sense now bud?

  • Time Capsule stopped broadcasting ssid

All of a sudden my ssid is no longer broadcasting from my time capsule. I rechecked the setting to make sure that the ssid was not selected to be hidden and it was not. Ive tried to change the wireless transmitting channel and still nothing. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussion area, UnderTheCrates!
Have you done a *complete power cycle* of the entire network? That's the first step to perform in any situation like this. If you have not already done this...
Power down everything on the network, order is not important.
Wait a moment and start the modem first, and let it run for moment by itself.
Then start the next device connected to the modem the same way.
Start other devices one at time the same way.
This may not solve your issue, but it is an important step to perform in any troubleshooting sequence.
    Please post on your results.

    router assigned 10.10.10.3 as wireless ap gui interface;
    when entering ap gui the entire screen is blank expect for an "enter" button near bottom;
    clicking on this button does nothing; "error on page" is indicated on IE8 status;
    assigned SSID is not broadcasting

    Hi !!
im the same problem , but i fix it
first you must change the IOS version to ap801-k9w7-tar.124-10b.JDA3 ( you can dowload for the cisco web )
after download the image file you putt this command in the ap exec mode:
    ap#archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://x.x.x.x/ap801-k9w7-tar.124-10b.JDA3.tar
after the files are copied to flash memmory , the routyer boots with the new image ang bug fixed

  • 1242AG when reboot stops broadcasting SSID's?

Need some advice, I have 2 SSID's set on the dot11radio0 interface each on a seperate vlan with mbssid set. All works fine. I can associate ok to either and vlan trunking is working. Whenever I power down the AP for any period of time and restart, the SSID's no longer broadcast. All interfaces are up up.

    Hi Julian,
    Unless I am missing something (no surprise:). It looks like only "homenet" is set to Broadcast using the "guest-mode" command;
    dot11 ssid homenet
    vlan 2
    authentication open
    mbssid guest-mode
    This one "avnet" is not set to Broadcast;
    dot11 ssid avnet
    vlan 1
    authentication open
    Hope this helps!

  • AAA config on cisco 881w

help configure AAA (Radius server, access list)
    There are two devices
An access point and cisco 881w. It is necessary to set up authentication through a radius server.
You can configure detailed how to do this?

    Hi,
I guess you are looking for the Local Radius server.
It is mentioned in the following link i gave you above:
    881W router sample config:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns340/ns517/ns430/ns855/white_paper_c11-492842.html
    It mentions the following:
Note that if you use a local RADIUS server, you must add the following configuration to create that server. Add as many users as needed by using the username password command:
    radius-server local
    nas key 0
    username password 0
!!SSID configuration with open EAP authentication and WPA for key-
    management!!
    dot11 ssid corporate
    vlan 10

After installing Lion, my cisco vpn no longer works. If I force boot in 32 bit mode it works fine, so appears to be a cisco client issue. Does anyone know if CISCO is working on  64bit client compatible with Lion?

If I change the Wireless Router to Broadcast SSID is YES, then the HP6700 Printer can connect to the Wireless Router. I setup the Printer telling it what the SSID and Password were, the same as both of my LapTops, but it never connects, unless I change the Router to broadcast the SSID. Help!

Did you try updating the firmware on the DI-514?
You can also try setting a static IP on the printer, then assign the printer to the static DHCP list in the router interface.
To give your printer a static IP address:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you will have delete and re-add the printer on your Mac.

  • Wdtv not connecting to wifi unless broadcasting SSID

    Greetings from Sunny Spain  8)
I've been using for several years a wd tv live (currently version of firmware: 1.16.13) wirelessly attached to my network (Netgear router). My wifi security is wpa2. I also set my wifi, among other things, to NOT broadcast SSID.
I bought last week an Airport Time Capsule. For now it's working bridged to my Netgear router-modem, who gets the Internet connection. Wifi is supplied by the apple router.
I do have several boxes wirelessly attached to this new wifi: Sonos boxes, a PS3, a Wii, a Linux laptop, a Samsung printer.
But strangely enough I cannot connect my WDTV to this airport/wifi UNLESS I BROADCAST its SSID.
I've checked several times. Strangely enough (at least to me) I can still connect to a hidden SSID if I use my old router.
I've got no trouble getting the other devices (except for the Samsung printer who required a little work) to connect to the hidden SSID apple driven wifi. So methinks this is a bug, unless it's a feature  Is there any kind of workaround available that anyone knows about?
Thanks for reading this. Please forgive my poor grammar skills.

As you are probably already aware hiding the broadcast of a wireless network's SSID is not a fool-proof security measure but tends to introduce new problems ... like your WDTV not being able to connect.
I'm not sure why this is only happening with your new AirPort Extreme and not with your previous Netgear router but it may be due to how each manufacturer implemented this feature. I don't think it is a bug with your AirPort router and I'm not aware of any communications from Apple about it.

    Ver.1.1.39.145204 is the firmware.
Shutting off the 2.4 Ghz and the 5 Ghz wifi does not shut off the transmission of an SSID.
If allow wireless admin access is checked the SSID continues to transmit on both 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz bands.
If unchecked then the SSID transmits only on the 5Ghz band.
In both cases the SSID being transmitted is the factory default SSID and it advertises an unsecured connection.  (router wipes out your security settings when you disable a radio)
On the plus side attempts to connect to this erroneously broadcast ssid have been unsuccessful but it still seems like a bad idea to be advertising an open connection 24 hours a day.
I have tried to report this to Linksys tech support.  Their answer was to reload the firmware.  Which I did - however it did not change the behavour of this SSID bug.  I asked them to report it as a bug and the lady declined.
Does anyone know how to shut of the SSID when the Wifi is disabled?

Hi eastavin. Did you delete some preferred networks on your computer when you disable both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network? You need to do this before connecting your computer wirelessly again, so that you would be able to know if your computer can still see and connect to your disabled network. Also, what is the OS of your computer? Is it a Windows computer or a Mac?
