Cisco Air-Lap1242AG

Hi i was trying to create a better stronger wireless network at my house.  I picked up a Cisco Air-Lap1242AG on an auction thinking it would give me more range.   Now trying to set it up i am trying to figure out if i made a mistake?  Can this router be used at home with just a Cable Modem?  Or does this need to hook into a Business Network?
Thanks
Eric

A Cisco "Air-LAP" access point is useless standalone by itself. It must participate on a network with a Cisco
Wireless Lan Controller appliance to configure and manage it.
And it's just an access point, not a router too, like a typical home unit is. Looks like you bought the wrong tool for the job.
In my opinion, the best performing consumer-grade wireless routers (for max range, and typical Internet surfing 802.11g speeds) I've ever encountered, for home use have been the old Buffalo Wireless-G High Power units, which I think you can still buy online these days.

  • AIR-LAP1242AG-K9 could not join a 2106 WLC: i ma getting ready for a deployment, how can i resolve this?

    Hi,
I setup a mini wireless LAN network lab with a not for resale 2106 wireless lan controller and a sales  air-lap1242ag access point. I do not have a DHCP and DNS in my lab environment. I have configured the WLC with the basic configuration using the CLI wizard, i also configured the WLC as a DHCP server for clients that will be connecting to the APs associated to the controller.
I powered up the AP and connect the ethernet port directly to the controller, the controller issued an IP address to the AP, the AP downloaded a new operating system from the controller but failed to join the controller.
I check both debug message on the controller console and the trap messages on the controller's GUI  and it say the AP could not download a configuration from the controller and it is beacuse of invalid license. Below is the trap message:

Also, I tried to log into the GUI of the AP using the both the username and password  ''Cisco'' but I cannot get into the device. I can only get in through the CLI. In the CLI, almost all the commands I enter gives an error the it is disabled. I don't know what to do any more, I want to know if the access point is faulty or i am not doing the right thing.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the quick response.
The controller is running firmware version:
    Software Version                 6.0.199.4
    Emergency Image Version 6.0.199.4
The AP can ping the Management IP address of the controller successfully via console. I have also entered in the AP the WLC's Management IP address information and it is still the same. Below is the message I'm getting on the console of the AP it self:

I will also like to know if AIR-LAP1242AG is compatible with WLC 2106 controller.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, i really need to resolve this issue in my LAB now so that I don't go to my customer site to fumble.
    thanks in advance.

  • Low power warning for AIR-LAP1242AG-C-K9

    Hi Buddie,
We purchased some AIR-LAP1242AG-C-K9 , but not perchasing any wireless controller. When I connect the LAP to Cat2950 or Cat2960 PPoE port, all the LAP can not boot normally. It indicates low power, please refer the two pictures attached. But if I use external power cable, the LAP can work well. So, I would like to know two things.
    1. Can I use LAP standalone without using controller ?
    2. If the above is Yes, how should I configure the PPoE on cat2950 to Support LAP correctly?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Jian,
    Q. Can an LAP operate independent of a wireless LAN controller (WLC)?
    A. No, LAPs cannot function independent of WLCs. LAPs function in conjunction with a WLC only. The reason is that the WLC provides all the configuration parameters and firmware that the LAP needs in the registration process.
So you will need to either send the AP's back and get the IOS version, purchase a WLC or convert the LAP to IOS :(
    Q. How do I distinguish between a regular (autonomous) AP and an LAP?
    A. The easiest way to distinguish between a regular AP and a LAP is to look at the part number of the AP.
LAP (Lightweight AP Protocol [LWAPP])?Part numbers always begin with AIR-LAPXXXX.
Autonomous AP (Cisco IOS? Software)?Part numbers always begin with AIR-APXXXX.
    From this good Q&A doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item09186a00806a4da3.shtml
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

  • AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9 configure command does not seem to exist

I have an AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9. Straight out of the box I thought it would have the GUI functional but this is not the case. I am brand new to Cisco products so it is taking me a while to get use to them and to TelNet but from what I have read in about 6 different manuals none have explained how I can access the configure terminal command when It doesn't show up. I am in privileged mode with access of:
    AP001c.588e.a266#show privilege
    Current privilege level is 15

    Any would be appreciated,

    Hi Matt,
    The problem here is that the AP you received is a Lightweight AP which is meant to be used with Wireless Lan Controllers and WCS. The "LAP" portion of the part number shows this Lightweight designation. This can be converted to an Autonomous/stand-alone AP that you desire;
    Here is a conversion method;

Now my issue is, at the same site i have 12 nos of AIR-LAP1242ag autnomous AP's which i need to convert to lightweight ap and register with wlc. where i am stuck currently. after loading the recovery image (c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.123-7.JX9.tar) the ap reboots and can see it register with wlc within seconds contollers pushed the new image and once the ap reboots, never register again.
    does anyone has any idea?

After adding the country codes GB and RU.. in my test setup 1242 is registered...i will have it run for couple hours and see the result

  • AIR-LAP1242AG bandwidth issue

    Good afternoon,
My name is Dave and my company has assigned me to fix an issue with the signal from a WLAN 5508 Controller to several ( maybe 12) AIR-LAP1242AG's in a warehouse location.
We are currently using a single 5 GHz anntenna but are looking into other options.
The issue we are having is the signal strength.  We are using Windows CE scan guns and the wireless is weak at best (even if you stand directly under the AP.
Since I am brand new to the job, I am unfamiliar with our topology but will do what I can to resolve this issue.  Could the issue be a combination of power, antenna strength and something in the controller perventing the signal from passing?
The ceilings in the warehouse rafters are between 25-30ft.    I will be happy to assist anyone that might be able to point us in the right direction.
I have yet to look into the AP's console but I wanted to get possibly a few ideas.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration in solving our issue.
    Sincerely,
    Dave P.

Thank you so much for your response.  Here are the answers to your questions.
    1.  Are the APs installed suspended from the ceiling and the "Cisco" logo pointing to the floor? Yes
    2.  Are the 5Ghz antennae being used?  Yes How many per unit?  1 – 2
Are they connected to the correct radio?  Yes             What type of antennaes? AIR-ANT5135D-R
    3.  What are the walls of the warehouses made out of?  Concrete
    4.  Are there any electric motors? Just forklifts
    5.  Are the APs above or below the level of the shelves? Above
    6.  Was a Wireless Site Survey conducted before and after the APs were installed?  No
    7.  Is the WLC's Radio Resources Meter set to it's default level? ????  We are not sure of this one yet.
    I hope this helps.
    Thank you so much!

  • Cisco AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9 Telnet issue

Hi Team, I have installed new cisco AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9 in the remote site LAN however the access point received the ip address through central DHCP helper address. I am able to ping the access point through LAN but I am unable to telenet the device to configure.
Also when Field enginner visited on site to connect physical he connected through console but we were not able get into configure mode though we had full privilege access.
    Please advice.

    Thanks,
    1. Does it mean I should not be able to telnet also into the AP though I can ping from Router LAN ( AP is connected directly to router ethernet interface).
    2. I am also not able to discover controller when running in controller-based IOS. getting below errors.
Thanks to advice on above points.

  • Cisco AIR-LAP 1131 reboot in loop

    Hi Everyone
I recently had to deploy about 4 cisco 1131 AP's to one of our branch location. When configuring them on the controller, i needed to put them in HREAP mode. As soon as i do that and the AP needs to reboot, it will continue to reboot in a loop and indicate the following:

    St-John-AP1 uptime is 1 minute,
cisco AIR-LAP1131G-A-K9    (PowerPCElvis) processor (revision B0) with 24566K/8192K bytes of memory.
    Processor board ID FTX1632N00D
PowerPCElvis CPU at 262Mhz, revision number 0x0950
And this is all it does, and keep loading the image. I already know the recovery procedure to reset it, but i wanted to know how i can put these AP in HREAP without having these issues. In the setup we need, we cannot have those AP be in local mode.
Thanks for any help and consideration .

The thing is, I've been applying the instruction:
capwap ap controller ip address 10.4.13.2
'cause I want them to communicate with a remote controller, and the past eight did it fine, but this two didn't.
As for the things I've already tried, I have reset it's parameters to it's initial settings, I've tried to load a new IOS image, I've cleared the flash memory, but nothing works, it keeps communicating with the old controller.
How can I fix this? (I mean, changing or adapting the AP to a lightweight AP)
    Thanks in advance

Its fine to try to apply it from the console...but if you really want to clear the AP, you need to clear the nvram.  so if changing the primary from the GUI that the AP has joined didn't work, then try this:
    debug capwap console cli
    erase /all nvram
    Example:
    Entered the username and password
    debug capwap console cli
    erase /all nvram:
    [confirm]
    undebug all
    reload
    [confirm]
    Thanks,
    Scott

i found something about how to reach the maximum N speed
    Factors that Affect 802.11n Throughput
There are circumstances where 802.11n devices cannot operate at their  maximum capable data rates. There are various reasons why this occurs.  This is the list of factors that affect 802.11n throughput:
When 802.11n clients operate in a mixed environment with 802.11a or  802.11 b/g clients, 802.11n provides a protection mechanism to  interoperate with 802.11a or 802.11 b/g clients. This introduces an  overhead and reduces the throughput of 802.11n devices. Maximum  throughput is achieved in Greenfield mode where only 802.11n clients exist.
Factors such as Channel width, Guard Interval and Reduced IFS (RIFS) play a major role in the bandwidth. Table 1 and Table 2 show how these factors affect the bandwidth.
Clients ability to send a Block Ack instead of individual frame acknowledgements.
MCS Index configured on the WLC.
Proximity to AP—Clients closer to the AP experience higher data  rates. As clients move farther away from the AP, signal strength  reduces. As a result, data rate decreases steadily.
RF environment—Amount of noise and interference in the environment.  The less the noise and interference, the greater the bandwidth.
Encryption/ Decryption—Encryption in general reduces the throughput  due to the overhead involved in the data encryption/decryption process.  However, advanced encryption standards, such as AES, can provide better  throughput when compared to other encryption standards, such as TKIP and  WEP.
Wired Network Infrastructure—Bandwidth of the wired infrastructure  determines the speed of the traffic to and from the wired network to the  wireless clients.
If using an AP1250, change the AP to H-REAP mode for a 5-10% boost.
If using an AP1140, keep the AP in local mode and enable TCP MSS on the controller. Use the config ap tcp-adjust-mss enable all 1363 command in order to enable it.
Disable RRM scanning to prevent any throughput drops when going off channel. This can yield a 1-3% improvement.
Disable RLDP to ensure the AP does not attempt to connect to rogue devices during testing.
Use a Wireless Controller 5508 as the data plane is superior to the 4404-series.
    My questions are:
    1. How i can i put the access point to operate only in N mode (because all my clients are N)
2.The guard interval can be modify ?
    3. How to put my AP in H-REAP (can i do this without WLC?)
    4. How to disable RRM
    5.How to disable RLDP.
    Thank you.

The system has been interrupted, or encountered an error during initializion of the flash filesystem.
The foolowing commands will initialize the flash filesystem, and finish loading the operating system software:
    flash_init
    ether_init
    tftp_init
    boot
When I type this commands, it doesn't help at all. The output will be following:

  • Cisco AIR-LAP 1522 PROBLEM

Hello to everyone. They brought me a LAP1522 referring that it is not working properly. I am trying to connect to console port but the problem is that I only get log messages but I cannot edit something or type any commands. I have attached the log messages if you can catch something from there. Ignore the messages about not finding controller because the AP has been removed from the real network to my office.
