Cisco Aironet 1200 LAP Issues - LAP to Autonomous Mode

Greetings! After purchasing 4 of the Cisco Aironet 1200 G Series WAPs, I'm now running into a slight issue with them.
I received these last week with the understanding that if I didn't have the Cisco controller device, I could convert them from being the Lightweight Access Point, back to Autonomous mode with an IOS.
With this, I checked the documentation that came with the device and found the "Upgrading Autonomous Cisco Aironet Access Points to Lightweight Mode" or http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Wireless%20-%20Mobility&topic=Getting%20Started%20with%20Wireless&needs_authentication=yes&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Dadd_discussion%26mode%3Dshow%26needs_authentication%3Dyes%26location%3D.ee7c7c3.
From there, I followed the instructions listed under Converting a Lightweight Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode. Before the rename of the file, I checked the device and found AIR-LAP1242G-A-K9 for the Model No.
One of the Cisco Certified admins here was able to obtain the latest build for the IOS for the device or c1240-k9w7-tar.123-8.JEB1.tar. Per the instructions, I renamed the file to coincide with the model of the device.
I followed the instructions from there, and it looked as if everything was going well. However, after the upgrade, I'm running into an issue with the following:
File "flash:/c1200-k9w7-mx.123-8.JEB1/c1200-k9w7-mx.123-8.JEB1" uncompressed and installed, entry point: 0x3000
executing...
At this point, the device just locks up. All lights are lit green on the device. According do the documentation, it should reboot and from there, I should be able to access the web interface by IP.
I've tried to perform the upgrade again using the same IOS build, but the same thing happens with the lock up.
At this point, I'm assuming the issue is with the build of the IOS that I have and I may have to look at getting an older build. However, before doing so, I thought I would post something here to see if anyone had an idea.
I may have needed to refine my searching of the forums, but wasn't able to find anything in relation to my issue. If there is something out there, I do apologize for the post and will happily refer to any current information.
If you need any further information in relation to this, please let me know. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Jeffrey,
Reverting the Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode
Have a look at Step 3
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00804fc3dc.html#wp161272
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

    Hello,
I want to control client associations when AP load is high.
Is there an MIB object that enables/disables client associations?
I have searched the supported MIBS, but i could not find anything.

An improper combination of power level and antenna gain can result in equivalent isotropic radiated power (EIRP) above the amount allowed per regulatory domain. Here is the URL which indicate indicates the maximum power levels allowed with the Cisco integrated antenna for each regulatory domain and also contain configuration setting.

  • Cisco Aironet 1200 wireless network very slow

I have a simple wireless network set up, 2 - Cisco Aironet 1200 AIR-AP1220B-A-K9 wireless access points with 2 dBi Diversity Omni directional Ceiling Mount Antennas. They are the only devices connected to a Multitech Routfinder router, the WAN side the router is connected to a dedicated DSL connection. They are powered by AIR-PWRINJ3 power injectors. The WAP get the IP address from the DHCP in the router.
When connecting to the wireless network it runs very very slow, the signal strength is excellent and the connection speed is 54 mbps. But when opening a web browser it takes for ever to load a simple page like msn.com. If I connect the notebook directly to the router it runs very fast. We have tested with several notebooks and have the same problem. When I view the available wireless networks in range the only two that show up are the two Cisco 1200 WAP.
I have done the following with no improvement:
Change the channels from auto to 6 on one and 11 on the other.
    Reset to factory defaults.
    Update the firmware to c1200-k9w7-tar.123-7.JA2.tar
Replace the 802.11b radios with 802.11g radios AIR-MP21G-A-K9.

    Thanks for the info.
The documentation say not to switch from auto to full duplex or half duplex when using inline power, well I think it says the AP may reboot. I may have tried half duplex before I upgraded the firmware.
While upgrading I disconnected the AP, used a patch cord to connect it to the router and pluged the power directly into it to make sure the wiring to the AP was not the problem and it did the same thing.
However, when trying to upgrade the firmware it took ~ 45 minuets to upload the image and filed a couple of times retrying. I connected the AP to the notebook directly with a crossover cable and it uploaded in about 45 seconds.
That got me to thinking that there may be a problem with the router so I have replaced it with a Linksys.
In the mean time the DSL went down yesterday so I have not been able to test the new setup.

  • Cisco aironet 1200 Series access point dropping clients

We are having an issue where our Cisco Aironet 1220 Series AP is constantly dropping clients. We have 3 APs mounted on a single tower, all out of each others range and freq. There are approximatly 30 clients on each AP. We are noticing an increase in dropped customers (up to 20 at a time). ANy suggestions? This only became an issue in the last few weeks, and nothing major has changed.

    Hi
Even I was facing almost the same kind of problem. But in my case it was wired clients to the workgroup bridge 350.
I had done lot of testings and reading at that time to resolve this problem.
However in your case I feel your problem can be resolved by keeping the option "Reliable multicast for Workgroup bridges" disabled in the APs under dot11radio interface settings. This is possibly because the radios cannot associate to more than 20 clients at a time if the option is in the enable mode.
You need to keep this option enabled in a root bridge when you have problems of dropping the wired clients to the workgroup bridge.
By keeping this option enabled, you are actually asking the Root bridges to consider the Workgroup bridges as Infrastructure devices and not as clients thereby making the roots to send all the multicasts to the WGBs. However in that case it losses the efficiency of associating more than 20 clients.
Let me know if this resolves your problem.

  • Cisco Aironet 1200 series AP's...

    Hi,
The wireless at one of our remote sites was working fine until there was a problem one week back. Just for introduction we are using the following setups for wireless:
independent wireless access-points whihc connect directly to the Cisco switches most 2950's..
We have three vlans in LAN, vlan1 (for user - LAN), vlan-4 (for wireless users - EAP auth with MS-IAS s radius) and vlan-5 (for wireless scanners - MAC auth).
All the AP's are 1231G series of devices.
These AP's are connected to the switchports with a trunk, dot1Q enabled, vlan-4 as native vlan.
Suddenly one day, 12 out of 15 AP's went offline, meaning: we were not able to ping any of them except 3 which were working fine. When checked at the switch we were able to see all 15 of them as CDP neighbor of the switches, even the ones which were not able to be pinged on the network. We were not able to ping them neither from the local L2 switch (IP on vlan-1) nor from the site router (default gateway of all the local subnets).
I took the console connection of one of the not-working AP, it does not show any particular log or message. The Fastethernet0 port was UP/UP. I was not able to ping AP's default gateway. When I rebooted the AP, it was pinging from the network for about 2 mins and after that it was again off-network, not pinging. When the AP was reset to factory default, it was pinging fine for a long time, without any problems. When we put in the OLD configuration, again it was off-network, not pinging.
Now, here is the surprising element for me! After 3 days of struggled troubleshoooting, remotely, onsite engineer changed the vlan allowed on the WAP connected trunk switchports (ie switchport trunk allowed vlan 4,5) i.e previously we were allowing 1, 4 and 5 vlans on the trunk, now he is allowing only 4 and 5. As soon as he made the changes, all of the not-working 12 WAP's became online one by one (as and when config change made on the trunk). Just to make another test and to make sure, I tried to allow all the vlans again and guess what the WAP was again off-networ - not pinging.
Now my question is: Why it was all working fine for more than a year and then suddenly one day 'something' happened which caused the 12 AP's to behave abnormal while 3 of them were still working good.
Is there any technical theory which can explain such type of behaviour?
    Thanks in advance,
    Gaurav

    Gaurav,
If you have the ability to, I would put on AP back to the "non-working" scenario.  then check the ARP table to see if you are getting a duplicate mac or IP address.

  • Apple Airport Express to Aironet 1200 AP Configuration???

I currently moved from my Cisco Linksys wireless router to an Cisco  Aironet 1200 AP. The reason fro doing this is that the linksys had  limited configuration capabilities and the wireless router would need to  be rebooted every three days or so. But that's a different issue.
The linksys Cisco router worked great with the Airport Express Ver.  7.4.2 the Linksys located all three Airport express's. i am using them  to bridge for each of my stereo throughout the house. But as stated  occasionally I the Cisco router would loose the ability to connect to  the Airports.
I decided I would beef up my wireless because I run many wireless  devices 3 printers 2 laptops and 3 Airports plus 2 Iphones. So as you  can see pretty heavy on the wireless.
So the problem is that I installed the 1200 AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 code:  c1200-k9w7-mx.123-8.JEB configured basic WPA / TKIP PSK. My laptop can  connect my Iphone can connect. Both devices work well and no issues. THE  PROBLEM is the Airport express devices cannot detect my AP unless I  configure them to use the ethernet port then they work just great. But  that's not helping I need to be wireless. I have spent hours going  through but I have not found a solution. Does anyone else have this  issue if so please let me know the fix.
    Thanks,
    rabalam

Any luck getting this figured out?
I'm having the same issue: Basically any wired computer can connect to airtunes, wirelessly on the airport, but I'm not able to go from wireless to wireless.  I've tested this on a separate system, with successful results.
I'm guessing it's a setting in the WAP that I'm missing.

  • Aironet 1200 - error in web interface

    Hi
I am attempting to configure 2 Cisco Aironet 1200 series devices for conection to an existing WLAN. Neither AP will be the Radius server.
I am able to connect to the device using IE and the IP address - however - as soon as I make any changes in any screen the screen then displays a message "Error on Page with a "!" in triangle.
This then prevents me from Applying the change asnd so configuring the device.
Anyone seen this before and know the solution - is there a bug in the web interface?

Is there an explanation along with it? Can you include a screenshot to your response? Screenshot will be helpful to diagnose the problem.

    Hi,
Yes you must need to change to autonomous mode.Yes it is the right software and you will not face any problem regarding license.
But for download the autonomous AP image from cisco you need a CCO (Cisco login) and valid service contract .

Yes, My AP model is AIR-LAP1231G.
I have figured out the error and have resolved it. The issue was with renaming the file. I renamed using windows rename (F2) that appended .tar extension after default (c1200-k9m7-tar.default.tar) later I renamed using CLI then it worked fine.

So can I downgrade or go back to autonomous mode or do I have to reload an IOS again? I don't have a license so my options there are limited.

    HI,
    As pe your post:
    System image file is "flash:/c1240-rcvk9w8-mx/c1240-rcvk9w8-mx
This is lightweight image. for this image you need controller.
If you want to use as autonomous AP. Then you must convert it to Autonomous mode.

  • 1131 LAP in autonomous mode

I was setting up the APs for a new users lab when we discovered they had puchased LAPs instead of APs.
I installed the current version of the IOS following the procedures outlined in "Converting a Lightweight Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode" on Cisco's website. However, they're just not behaving correctly.
Before going further, can LAP1131s be converted to autonomous mode? Or is it only AP1131s that can be converted back and forth?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
    One thing to note that on the newer IOS's the Radio's cannot be enabled until the SSID is set. You may have been seeing this result;
Changes to the Default Configuration-Radios Disabled and No Default SSID
In this release, the radio or radios are disabled by default, and there is no default SSID. You must create an SSID and enable the radio or radios before the access point will allow wireless associations from other devices. These changes to the default configuration improve the security of newly installed access points.
