Cisco Aironet 3502i and Virtual Wireless Controller- Question

Hello everyone,
As soon, I purchased two Cisco 3502i and Cisco 1142 however, two issue are that I don't have controller and smartnet. As my purpose, it using for Home Use but house with 2,500 Sq ft with two floor and new 24x24ft garage with two floor. I put two Cisco 3502i for garage and one cisco 1142 in house on second floor. Separated for multi media, gaming, streaming high resolution video, parts, and downloads programmings online. It will run with Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports (4 POE) and two gigabit ports. In house, it have Dell Poweredge 2850, Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports POE and 2 ports gigabit.
I thought to make my own developing with my first time using Wireless Controller. I wanted to try out with Virtual WLC on Dell Poweredge 2850 running ESXi 4.1.
Specs for Dell Poweredge 2850:
- 2x Intel Xeon Dual Core 3.8 GHz
- 4GB RAM (Will upgrade to 12GB soon)
- 2x 146GB and 2x 36GB SCSI
- 2x 1 Gbps built in and 4x 1 Gbps PCI-X
Developing with Untangle and pfSense to make it support with LADP and VLAN to both Cisco Express 500 using 4 gbps PCI-X. I have read the requipment list to use Virtual WLC but it seem met the requipment for my 2850. If someone offer me to get Virtual WLC and IOS from their, I accept to "borrow" it. I do go college which is Rochester Institute of Technology at New York and my major is Applied Computer Technology. I live here at Hampton Road, Virginia. Just in case if you might know about RIT. I just start to learning myself with Cisco books.
I have a question:
- Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
- Is there possible to get Lightweight or Autonomous IOS for Cisco 1142 and 3502i?
-  Does it supported Dell PowerEdge 2850?
- Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
Thanks
Gage

I have a question:
- Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
No.  You will need a SmartNet contract (or a freshly purchased device) to obtain software from cisco.  Nobody will provide this to you.
- Is there possible to get Lightweight or Autonomous IOS for Cisco 1142 and 3502i?
No.  You will need a SmartNet contract (or a freshly purchased device) to obtain software from cisco.
Nobody will provide this to you.
-  Does it supported Dell PowerEdge 2850?
Cisco doesn't go in to great detail regarding the actual Hardware requirements of the vWLC (as far as ESX Host requirements).  Primarily, making sure you are running ESX 4.x/5.x is necessary.  The vWLC provisions 2Gb of RAM and 8GB of thick provisioned storage, so if your host can accomodate I don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
- Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
Yes, with the latest versions of IOS 15.2(2)JB, full functionality in autonomous can be achieved on the 1550, 3500, and 3600 series APs

                       Hello,
Does the Cisco Virtual WLC support the 1230AP?
There is a list of supported AP's from the data sheet the1230 isnt listed, maybe shoould assume no support?!

no, it doesn't.  But it has to do with the 7.3 code, as that is the lowest code the vWLC can run.

  • Cisco Aironet 3502i AP has no light

    Hi All,
I just configured Aironet 3502i and it works ok but no lights. I could see the AP in switch, in WLC, and in WCS and ping ok but when you see it mounted it has no light. I tried to shutdown the port in the switch and I saw it turns green (booting), once it was registered in WLC the light will be off.
Currently I have 4 AP's with same issue that has no light but working. Any tip for this?

  • Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller Vs Hardware Controller

Our WiSM needs to be upgraded.
We were given a choice of virtual (cheaper)  or hardware controller.
We were told that the virtual controller is designed differently and the usual traffic does not go through the controller.
    question:
how does this impact security or other features of cisco wireless solution?
and if you have any other comments/experience  with the virtual controller
    THANKS

I can't really comment on the security question, other than, it depends on your network design :)
Regarding features, if you already manage a controller and know the required features, you find here a good comparison of all controllers and its features:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/buyers-guide.html#~controllers
I think the feature in question was "Central Mode" which the virtual one lacks. The more modern (or actually the way it was before we had controllers) is "Flex Connect". In this mode the data will be put in the correct VLAN directly at the port the access point is connected to. That means that you will need to configure a Trunk port on the Switch for each AP. Depending on your building security, that could be seen as an issue. You could protect that with 802.1x between AP and Switch.

  • Cisco aironet 1130 and Intermec CV30

    Hi to all,
I've a little problem with three Cisco 1130 AP. Anticipately i tell you that i'm not a guru of cisco wireless, but my implementation is very simple. I need a roaming for the 3 AP. I only have Ap, so i configure one as Master Ap and the others like repeater with cisco aironet extension configured. All 3 on the same channel and only the Master one broadcast SSID. Wep security implemented. My Cv30 terminals randomly loose the signal also if they're near an AP. They use windows mobile but i think is only a wrong config problem. I need help. Thank you very much.
    Alex

The device is using the LWAPP image.. please upgade the same to autonomous image and convert the same..

  • Post-Authentication ACL in Wireless Controller question

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to setup an ACL for "after" people login to our wireless network to allow them access ONLY to web, not file servers or sql servers, etc.
I found how to configure an ACL, but it's pre-authentication and after people log in, they have access to everything.
    Any ideas?
    I'm using a Wireless Controller 2504
    Thanks.

I think I found it, there is a override ACL after login, I set this one up (see picture), but even though I can do a nslookup and I can ping any site, when I try to go online, I get nothing.
    What am I forgetting?

  • 3702e AP and 2504 wireless controller

    Hey,
If I want to deploy a number of 3702e AP which support 802.11ac am I ok to use the 2504 wireless controller?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I agree with Rasika's post about the minimum software you'll need, however, you say you want to deploy 3702e.  What is the antenna you're going to be using and how will the antennas be deployed.
Remember that you'll find some distinct limitation when you want to employ 802.11ac nowadays.  Your first quest is to find clients which can FULLY support 802.11ac.  Don't look at the ads.  I mean there are some smartphones and tablets who claim to suppport 802.11ac but if you look closely at the product specifications there is only ONE wireless antenna.
Your next hurdle will be your network.  Understand what bandwidth a single 802.11ac can push thorugh the ethernet cable.  Next multiply that by, say, three (three wireless clients associated to three different APs and all three running 802.11ac).  Now let's say all three APs are connected to ONE switch.

  • Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller licensing

    Hello everyone!
We are about to start using vWLC, currently using default 60 days evaluation license
There are couple of questions regarding licensing:
    1. Will the serial number change if we migrate the virtual machine from one host to another or if it rehosts automatically?
    2. If yes, what to do with the license? It is tied to the serial number as far as I know. Is there any way to generate a new license when the serial number changes?
    Thank you!

I have received a license for vWLC but I entered the wrong Serial Number during the registration process and I have just realized it. I tried to rehost the license on cisco.com, entered UDI and correct serial number, received the new license and when I try to install it I received this error:
Failed license installation at index:0 : UDI in license line does not match with the local udi
My current UDI is AIR-CTVM-K9, but during the rehost process this UDI was rejected and I used L-LIC-CTVM-UPG. I successfully received the new license file, but I can not install it with the error described before.
Is there anything we can do about it?

  • Virtual wireless controller

Hi.. i have running cisco vWLC controller in my location A, its working perfectly here. Now i have another location B where i have APs registered with controller in location A. I have created another WLAN and set location B dhcp server assign location B network ip. But issue is that when we connect to this wlan it gets connected but no ip gets assigned. wireless controlloer can reach to location B dhcp server, there is no connectivity issue b/w these.
what else settings do i need to set so that clients can get ip through dhcp.

Is location B WLAN configured with local or central switchinng?
If traffic is central switched (tunneled back to the WLC in location A) that may the problem in your case. I assume location A and B are in separate broadcast domains, so there should be an issue with the dhcp discovers from clients.
You should try to local switch the traffic for WLAN B or if it has to be central switched you should switch locally dhcp packets from clients.

  • Use of Cisco Aironet AP1242AG as a wireless client

Hi guys! I am in possession of two cisco Access points (AP1242AG) and I would like to use them to replace my current configuration (in the first picture) in our family home. Currently I have two Asus Eee boxes that act as "repeaters".
It works so far, but it is not so stable and increases the latency. I tried to setup one of the Cisco access points as repeater, but without success.
It says that cisco repeater communicates only with Cisco equipment.
My second idea was to try something most simple. I disabled the security settings on D-link router and tried to setup the AP1242 as Universal Workgroup Bridge client, where Radio0 would connect to Router D-LINK 600, and crossover cable would connect AP1242 and the Asus Box.
I managed to configure trough HyperTerminal, and it did associate (Cisco with D-Link), I was able to see the Cisco Web interface over LAN on that asus box, however I was not able to access internet. Then I tried to enable the other Radio1, and set it up as Access point and bridge those two radios, but that did not help either.  What am I doing wrong?
This is actually how I would like to have it: Radio0 as Universal WGB client, and Radio1 as Access Point.
If that is not an option, i could connect the asus box with LAN cable to AP1242 and make it act as Virtual AP.
3rd option, is to connect two Cisco Access Points together with LAN cable. One of the would connect to Router as Universal WGB, and the other would be what it supposed to be - Access Point
The reason why I would like to use Cisco in this role is because I believe that cisco has better output power (send/receive) and it would be more stable, and possibly faster. If you have any better idea how I could use this 2 access points, feel free to suggest. It is a shame to have them in my drawers instead od using them.
I attached pictures of 3 possible scenarios, and current configuration of the AP1242AG #1
I am new to Cisco equipment, so I really thank you for your time and help!

    Thanks for the response.
Everything works fine if I use your suggested setup but I need the TC in the office, and the DSL modem downstairs. An ethernet connection is not possible this way, and the printer in the living room isn't really a nice piece of furniture
I think, there is no possibility to use the wireless as uplink and the TC as a router/DHCP-server...
Probably I need a server computer to handle the connection between the wireless LAN created by the DSL modem and an ethernet network managed by the TC.
Hopefully someone has an idea/solution that fixes my problem.
    meanwhile I keep looking......

  • Aironet 1530 AP with Wireless Controller

The Aironet1530 AP datasheet suggests that it can be deployed as part of a lightweight controller based arrangement, but it does not appear as a supported AP on any of the controller s/w release notes that I've sio far looked at, could anyone advise?
    Regards, Dave Gabb

v7.5 is suppose to have support for the newer AP models.  You would have to wait for the documentation to come out which will have more info.

  • Cisco aironet 1130g and windows 2003 with cisco ACS

      hi
i  have configured windows 2003 server with  DNS ,Active directory users and dhcp server.  and configured my cisco 1130g AP .
i have installed cisco access control server 4.0 because i use LEAP authentication protocol and for the ACS for network configuration i give aaa client ip addresss as AP interface ip and  same shared secret for the AP and ACS,.
so  when i log to wifi it ask username and password
problem is lap top cannot have a ip address my dhcp server not issue any ip address .
my hiper terminal massage is like this when i connect to wifi
    help ...thank you...

As I mentioned now several times already, it is the client and ACS which do the PEAP. The Access point doesn't have to be configured for an eap type. What you did on the AP was setting the AP as a radius server which is duplicate work with what you did on ACS.
So you need on your client to configure either PEAP or LEAP.

  • Upgrade Cisco Aironet 3502i to Lightweight

    Hi there,
Anyone tried to upgrade C3502i to Lightweight? I failed to upgrade using Upgrade tool v3.4. The error message is "AP model is not supported" . Pls advise how can I upgrade it?
    Thanks and appreciate your advice!

it's the same as you I'd to convert it to autonomous. Just download the recovery image and perform the same steps. If you console into the ap and hold the mode button down then power the ap up, while holding the mode button for 20 seconds and releasing the button, you will see from the output what filename you need to rename the recovery image.
You will tftp the same as you did when you converted that to autonomous.

  • Question about Wireless Controller and LAG.

    I have a Wireless Controller 4400.
When I configure the controller with LAG, I have to connect the controller to a L3 switch?
If I connect the controller to a L2 switch the LAG works?
Some one can tell me something about this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rui

Copper? so you are using rj-45 Gb SFPs on the controller. If that is the case, what is the speed of the switchports on the 2960?
I use the rj-45 Gb SFPs on our 4402s and they work fine connected to Gb rj-45 ports on the switches.
    Also, check out the following:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/4.2/configuration/guide/c42mint.html#wp1116136
"Using the CLI to Verify Link Aggregation Settings
To verify your LAG settings, enter this command:
    show lag summary
Information similar to the following appears:
    LAG Enabled
Configuring Neighbor Devices to Support LAG
The controller's neighbor devices must also be properly configured to support LAG.
•Each neighbor port to which the controller is connected should be configured as follows:
    interface GigabitEthernet
    switchport
    channel-group mode on
    no shutdown
•The port channel on the neighbor switch should be configured as follows:
    interface port-channel
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk native vlan
    switchport trunk allowed vlan
    switchport mode trunk
    no shutdown

  • WAP321 & Aironet 2602e & 2504 Wireless Controller?

    Hello,
I am new to Cisco networking. I am currently in an environment with no Wireless Controller and the wifi uses two Cisco WAP321's.  The company wants to expand the wireless and has bought a Cisco 2504 Wireless Controller and a Cisco Aironet 2602e Controller-based WAP.  My question is once we start using the controller can it control the formerly controller-less WAP321's or will that have to be replaced with another Cisco Aironet 2602e?  Thank you.

My question is once we start using the controller can it control the formerly controller-less WAP321's
WLC 2504 will not support AP321s.  Talk to your authorized Cisco reseller and see if they will accept if you trade-in the AP321 for the AP 2602.
Make sure your AP 2602 have the correct regulatory domain.  If you are un-sure DO NOT open the boxes.
    For more information, go here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps5861/product_data_sheet0900aecd80537b6a_ps10981_Products_Data_Sheet.html
Another thing, for AP 2600, your 2504 should have the minimum firmware of 7.2.110.X.  IF you don't have it, then talk to the authorized Cisco reseller who sold you the controller and kindly ask them (nicely) if they could download the correct firmware for you.
