Cisco ASA - Invert primary/secondary

I haven't found an answear to my issue, so I decided to open a new discussion
We take care of 2 Cisco ASA 5580 (primary/secondary) working as usual (active/standby). Image version 8.2.5.
Today I found that the firewall that has been supposed to rule as primary, actually has been the secondary and vice-versa.
How can I configure (and what's the impact, as they are active im customer/business environment) to invert the situation: the primary become the secondary and the secondary become the primary.
I'm not talking about to perform a failover, but a config to fix that confusion with roles.

Welcome to the CSC
Since we are talking about an Active/Standby ASA Failover environment then configuring the "primary" and "secondary" in the "failover" configurations of the ASAs doesnt to my understanding have much meaning to the firewall operation other than deciding which becomes Active WHEN they BOTH boot at the same time.
If we for example have the below situation
We have ASA1 and ASA2 in Active/Standby Failover
ASA1 is configured as "primary" and ASA2 is configured as "secondary"
ASA1 is originally the Active unit and ASA2 the Standby unit
Now lets assume that either ASA1 boots or becomes Standby because of one of its interfaces failing THEN to my understanding there is NO mechanism in the Active/Standby Failover that would return the Active role back to the ASA1 when it becomes operational.
However in the case of Active/Active Failover its possible to configure a "preempt" parameter that defines that the unit that you have decided as the Active unit will return to Active role after network outage after a configured perioid of time. This is NOT possible on Active/Standby.
So in normal networking operation to my understanding the only way to really keep the preferred physical ASA as Active is to monitor the Failover and manually set the original physical ASA Active if there has been a failover.
There doesnt seem to be any automatic mechanism for the Active role to return to the original Active physical ASA.
IF you are just talking about changing the commands "failover lan unit primary" and "failover lan unit secondary" to the correct physical ASAs THEN sadly I can't say for sure (without testing) what effect configuring those commands have (when changing them around). I'd presume that changing these wont have any effect on the operation of the firewall as in production they DONT actually decide which unit STAYS Active
According to the Command Reference of 8.2 software the default setting is Secondary
I imagine you could possibly do the following (But cant say for 100% certainty without testing it myself)
remove the possible configuration "failover lan unit secondary" from the other unit
remove the "failover lan unit primary" from the other unit
configure the "failover lan unit primary" on the correct unit
And finally if you want configure the other unit with the "secondary" option (even though the default setting should be secondary according to the command reference)
Maybe I'll try to check if I have a identical Failover pair of ASA (physical) to test this out for you.

So I was doing a bit more reading on this http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wireless-lan-wlan/69639-wlc-failover.html it is an old document but working through it the document suggested that you didn't need to specify the IP address of the Primary or Secondary controller in the Wireless -> All AP -> AP_NAME -> High Availability. I removed this from one of the APs that was at the time serving no clients and tried to move it to the secondary and it worked. I then moved it back to the primary and it worked again.
Any reason why this would happen? The IP addresses I was using were 100% correct. The only difference I see for this controller as opposed to others we manage is the introduction of new interface types i.e. 'redundancy management' , 'redundancy port' ,etc. I do not have redundancy enabled so I'm guessing not, but having trawled through the configuration this is the only difference I can see? -
ASA primary/secondary downgradation impact
In a primary/secondary setup of ASA for remote VPN what will be the impact of service during downgrading the ASA firmware from 8.0.3(19) to 8.0(3). Can we do the activity with out disruption in service? Appreciate your inputs.

I have replied with the downgrade procedure in your other post.
If you have Remote VPN, there is no way to do it without a service interruption.
Even in a normal fail over scenario (from the primary to the secondary) all the remote VPN users will be disconnected and they will need to manually re-connect.

Cisco ASA 5505 Failover issue..
Hi,
I am having two firewalls (cisco ASA 5505) which is configured as active/standby Mode.It was running smoothly for more than an year,but last week the secondary firewall got failed and It made my whole network down.then I just removed the connectivity of the secondary firewall and run only the primary one.when I login by console i found out that the failover has been disabled .So again I connected to the Network and enabled the firewall.After a couple of days same issue happen.This time I take down the Secondary firewall erased the Flash.Reloaded the IOS image.Configured the failover and connected to the primary for the replication of configs.It found out the Active Mate.Replicated the configs and got synced...But after sync the same thing happened,The whole network gone down .I juz done the same thing removed the secondary firewall.Network came up.I feel there is some thing with failover thing ,but couldnt fin out :( .And the firewalls are in Router Mode.Please find the logs...

Cisco ASA 5520 Failover with DMZ
I have a pair of Cisco ASA 5520s running as a primary/standby. Everything is working properly with the primary ASA, however when I trigger a failover, everything works except for the DMZ interface on the standby ASA. I've poured over the configs, but perhaps I have been staring at them too long because I am just not seeing anything.

Does anyone see something I might be missing? I am at a loss...I'll just answer my own question...the configs are correct, but it the interface on the standby ASA was plugged into an improperly configured switchport. That'll do it everytime.

Creating a 20MB bandwidth using two cisco asa 5515x with a hub (10/100/1000)

I would like to simulate a bandwidth of 20MB for my DR project testing on my two cisco asa 5515x and with a cisco hub (10/100/1000). I was thinking to make two connections on my "outside" vlan with both speed of 10 and etherchannel it and do it again on the other asa.
Do you think it will simulate 20MB bandwidth? Or any other suggestion? Please add any comment, thanks to all.Hi Nicholas,
You have the HSRP running between your core devices. You can have your core A - ASA1 & Core-B - ASA2.
In your core switch you need to have a sepearate VLAN to connect the uplink to the firewall and asusual in asa you can have the primary and standby address configured and in core also you can have the vlan with hsrp ip configured.
But make sure that in your firewall you should mention the static routes for each subnets pointing to the core device hsrp.
The other scenario is you have make you ASA a standalone firewalls and in one firewall you need to have route to core a as primary and core b as secondary and in the other firewall vice versa. So that your traffic will get load balanced.

DNS Resolution in Cisco ASA 5525
Hey all,
I will begin by telling you what my end goal is, I am trying to block specific websites on our cisco ASA 5525 using FDQN. I know that this functionality for DNS resolution was not implemented until a specific version.
Current Version: Cisco ASA 5525
ASA Version: 8.6(1)
I can ping external addresses from the ASA however I cannot ping hostnames like "ping google.ca" does not work.
What I've done.

With this config I can, however, ping hostnames of internal servers.
This is an example of me pinging an external hostname.

I believe when a VPN tunnel is setup there should be one Child sa per subnet. The internal network of 10.65.1.0/24 should be setup with a child sa to the networks that were specified above depending on if there is traffic destined for them. What I am seeing is multiple child sa setup for the same subnet like the example below:

Cisco ASA 5505 Reset-I Problem with TCP State Bypass

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 that functions as my primary firewall and a Mitel 5000 controller behind it. I have two external phone users that have been connecting through the firewall with no issues for six months until about two weeks ago. I am now seeing the following log entry on the phone trying to connect to the Mitel Controller.

My phones are designed to work with the Mitel 5000 and Mitel 3300 phone controllers. The 5000 will only use port 6800 for call control, while the 3300 will use 6801 (Secured Minet), 6802 (Minet SSH), and if those fail, port 6800 (Minet Unsecured). When the phones initiate a connection, they try 6801 first. If 6801 is unavailable, the phone controller adds the RST flag to the ACK packet. When the phone sees the RST flag, it is supposed to reset and use the next port (6802). The same process happens again for port 6802, then the phone knows to try 6800. The problem is that the ASA sees the RST flag now and terminates the connection at the firewall. Therefore, the phones never see the RST flag, and continue to try the connection with port 6801.
I have tried to use the TCP State Bypass feature to correct the situation, but the log shows that the connection is still being terminated immediately by the firewall. I am a novice when it comes to configuring the ASA. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as the company that I bought the phone system from is out of troubleshooting options. I do not think that I have made any changes to the firewall around this time. I have packet captures and logs from my ASA and I have wireshark data on the inside of my network. I need to figure out how to configure the ASA so that it ignores the RST flag and sends the packet back to the source.

Configuring Cisco ASA for site to site VPN ( Issue with setting up local network)
OK, so our primary firewall is a checkpoint gateway. Behind that we have a cisco ASA for vpn users. I have a project at the moment where we need to connect to another company using site to site VPN through the cisco ASA, as the checkpoint gateway is unable to establish a permanent tunnel with the other companies Cisco ASA.
What would be the best practise for setting up the local network on my side? Create the network on the ASA and then use a L2 vlan to connect to the Core switch?
Setup a L3 interface on the core switch and point it towards the checkpoint gateway which would then point to the ASA?
When you have to select your local network through the site to site wizard do you have to put the inside network address of the ASA?
Our network is setup like this: Access layer switch > Core 6500 Switch > Checkpoint-Firewall > Internet
The ASA is connected to a checkpoint sub interface
Any help would be beneficial as im new to cisco ASAs

If we understood more about your environment we might be able to give you better answers. My initial reaction was similar to the suggestion from Michael to use a L2 vlan. But as I think a bit more my attention is drawn to something that you mention in the original post. The ASA is there for VPN users. If the VPN users need to access your internal network then you probably already have something configured on the ASA that allows access to the internal network. Perhaps that same thing might provide access for your site to site VPN?

Generating license for ISE high availability primary/secondary nodes
We have two ISE servers that will act as primary/secondary in a high availability setup.
The ISE 1.0.4 installation guide, page 93, mentions that "If you have two Cisco ISE nodes configured for high availability, then you must include both the primary and secondary Administration ISE node hardware and IDs in the license file."
However, after entering the PAK in the licensing page, the only required fields are:
- Primary Product ID
- Primary Version ID
- Primary Serial No
In this case, how can i include both primary and secondry HW and IDs?

Hi All,
I'm looking to connect a Cisco ASA 5525 firewall that will provide primary internet access to our core network. I want the ASA to learn routes from our core and advertise a default route by OSPF.
I'm happy with the basic configuration here but I'm wondering if there is any advatange to have the ASA sitting in a non-backbone area instead of area 0. Are there any best practises with this scenario or is connecting the ASA to area 0 perfectly acceptable?

I Suggest you to keep your ASA in Area 0, instead of non-backbone area.
I assume your asa will be having one end connected with LAN/Core LAN and other end with the public segment right.....
Then you can have the basic configuration set on ASA, as simple as possible...

We are looking at upgrading an aging firewall with a Cisco ASA. I have used the ASA before.
We would like to use the ASA in a colocation facility that will have a few site to site vpns. The ASA MUST be able to have redundant interfaces to our switches. Reading through ASA documentation this is possible. (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/configuration/guide/intrface.html#wp1045838) Can the ASA have redundant links to the same vlans? Will any of our configuration for VPN's, etc have to be setup twice?
ThanksThere are four types of redundancy that one can use on ASAs. The first one you cited, redundant interfaces on a single physical device is the least common in my experience.
The second is failover - when the ASA is mated is a failover ASA in a high availability configuration. This is the most common usage for customers requiring high availability (HA). That is the most common implementation and has been around since ASA 7.0 software (i.e. a good many years).
The third is to bond your interfaces from a given ASA (or sets of interfaces if you have an HA pair) into an Etherchannel. This has the added advantage of giving you potentially higher trhoughput. Etherchannel support was introduced in ASA software version 8.4(1).
The fourth and newest method is clustering. It was introduced just last fall in ASA 9.0 and is not very widely adopted just yet. It is primarily for high throughput requirements exceeding a single device's capacity but also gives the added benefit of redundancy.
None of them require you setup things twice configuration-wise. Some file operations (software upgrade, certificate management, VPN profiles (XML files)) need to be copied onto both members in a failover pair or all members in a cluster scenario.
Edit - there is a fifth type specific to VPNs whereby one can configure a secondary VPN gateway for clients, usually at a alternate site. That approach does require settting up everything separately on the ASAs. -
Internet Connection Became Slow after Introduction of Cisco ASA 5505 to the Network

Cisco ASA 5505 site to site Multiple subnet.
Hi. I need some help configuring my cisco asa 5505.
I've set up a VPN tunnel between two ASA 5505
Site 1:
Subnet 192.168.77.0
Site 2:
Have multiple vlans and now the tunnel goes to vlan400 - 192.168.1.0
What I need help with:
From site 1 i need to be able to reach another vlan on site 2. vlan480 - 192.168.20.0
And from site 1 I need to reach 192.168.77.0 subnet from vlan480 - 192.168.20.0
Vlan480 is used for phones. In vlan480 we have a PABX central.
Is this possible to do?
Any help would be greatfully appreciated!

The addition of a new network to the existing L2L VPN should be a pretty simple process.
Essentially you will have to add the network to the Crypto ACL present in the "crypto map" configurations. You will also have to configure the NAT0 configuration for it in the proper interfaces of the ASA. These configurations are all done on both ends of the L2L VPN connection.
Looking at your above configurations it would seem that you will need the following configurations
SITE 1
We add the new network to both the crypto ACL and the NAT0 ACL
access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended permit ip 192.168.77.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip 192.168.77.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0
SITE 2
We add the new network to the crypto ACL
We create a new NAT0 configuration for the Vlan480 interface as it has no previous NAT0 configuration
access-list outside_20_cryptomap_1 extended permit ip 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.77.0 255.255.255.0
access-list VLAN480-NAT0 remark NAT0 for VPN
