Cisco ATA 187 faxing issues
We have a site (a new site) that has about 50 or so ATA 187's being used for faxing. Were having faxing issues where some fax machines can't fax to external (to the PSTN) fax machines. They seem to be related to Ricoh fax machines that are Super G3. Any one come across similar troubles with the ATA's? Considering going to VG224's.
Thanks!
I have around 80 ATAs in production accross 11 sites and they gave me some headaches, a simple google search will produce dozens of similar issues.
Obviously there is a lot of things that come into play such as your PSTN transport (SIP/ISDN?) and also your media transmission method (t.38 vs pass-through). Here are some questions so we can better help you.
1.Start basic, make sure the affected ATAs have an external phone number mask properly assigned, sounds easy but this is the most common reason why my clients submit tickets.
2. Are you using CUCM for call control?
3.Collect appropriate debugs and post them, "debug ccsip messages" or "debug isdn q931) depending of your transport. Also provide us a copy of your gw config.
4. Symptoms: Issues with sending AND receiving? Error message/Busy signal?

Cisco ATA 187 with BT 6250 call transfer issue
Hello,
I am currently having issues configuring Cisco ATA 187 with BT 6250 DECT phones. I need to make the call transfer work. I have tested the ATA with another box standard analogue phones where when we press the Recall button we get a 2nd dial tone and then can transfer the call.
there is an R button on the BT 6250 but it doesnt give a secondary dial tone.
just wondering will there be some secret key combination for that!!
I don't see a lot of setting in the ATA for it.
any help will be very appreciated.
Thanks
AThe easiest way would be to create a route pattern in CUCM that does not include the 9, and then adds it in prior to sending it to the gateway. This way you won't have to create another dial-peer in the gateway. I would also recommend putting the new pattern(s) in a partition that is only searched by the ATA/credit card machine's CSS.
If they are able to dial both 7 and 10 digit numbers, you will need route patterns for each:
example: [2-9]xxxxxx & 1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxx
then under 'Called Party Transformations' prepend a 9

Cisco ATA 187 - will unregister from CUCM 10.5
Hello,
I've got some problems with my Cisco ATA 187. They keep unregistering from time to time. If you shutdown the Interface on the switch and no shut, it gets registered just straight away. According to cdp the device is pingable all the time, just the registration with the callmanager seems to be a problem.
Versions are:
App Load ID APP187.9-2-3-1
Boot Load ID 1.8.0.6
SW_Version ID 187.9-2-3-1
External Engineer told me that this series contains some kind of bug, but if I'll assign/configure the 2nd Port on that one, it shouldn't hung up. I've also tried this but without success.
Any ideas? :)
Thanks and regards
MarcMarc,
Yes the ATA 187 has always been a problem. I have had it doing the same thing with different versions of the Call Manager (starting 8.5). Anyways the only thing that made it bit stable for me has been to try and change the firmware. You can try to upgrade/downgrade the firmware on any one device that is having this issues and test if it makes any difference at all.
You can also search this forum it should come up with quite a number of threads on this.

Hi All, our Call Manager does not support the new ATA 187's as yet as we need an upgrade, there is an upgrade in the pipe line but its not for a while yet as we need to upgrade ARC and Unitiy too.
Is there a way to change the 187 SIP to SCCP?
Thanks all
MartynHi Martyn,
I am afraid that it is not like the older version where we can change the protocol in them.
ATA 187 is designed to support only SIP and it is built in and cannot be changed.
You can refer to the below link for product details.

Need to set it up with the Line 2. How do you set up line 2 for Call Manager?
Web browser to the ATA. Go in to "Network configuration" on the left hand side. the details then provide the MAC address info. Add this to callmanager as you would normally....or do a copy Line1 and change the relevant fields.

CSCtx91035 - ATA 187 unregister from CUCM for branch offices
This bug concerns the ATA 187. Fixed release should be 9.2(3)SR1 BUT not available for ATA 187 (Cisco IP Phone 6900 series !???).
We have the same problem here with our client in Belgium. When is the fixed release available for the ATA 187 please ?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards
MikeHey Mike,
Great Question. This bug has actually already been fixed.
The fixed release 9.2(3)SR1 is only available through TAC. You would have to open a case via phone or visit cisco.com.
Other known Bugs that you could ask TAC about are:
CSCtz22064 - ATA-187 hear Ring Back Tone with Directed Call Park unexpectedly
CSCtq85079 - ATA187 will crash if port2 keeps tftp downloading
CSCua01061 - ATA187 reset when there're mutiple ARP Reply
CSCua51467 - ATA187 memory leak
CSCty43474 - ATA 187 Allows telnet access on port 32000
CSCtz67038 - Cisco ATA 187 Analog Telephone Adaptor Remote Access Vulnerability
CSCub39248 - ATA 187 is not obtaining IP address from VLAN configured on its Eth port
CSCuc82525 - ATA187 units requires a reload to regain connectivity to CUCM
CSCuc14110 - ATA187 Sends empty SIP packet causing SIP ALG problems
CSCud88926 - ATA 187 provides its uptime instead of local time to analog phones.
CSCud74510 - Non secure ATA 187 not registering to SRST, if secure SRST checked
CSCuh49249 - ATA-187 Crashes in SRST mode when called via ISDN BRI
CSCuj59548 - ATA 187 don't honor configured Renewal(T1)
I hope this helps! -
Issue on Cisco ATA 186 used for Fax
Hello everyone;
I have a cisco ATA 186 connected to an analog Fax on one side, and the other side is connected to the network containing a CUCM 8.6.
The problem is that when i try to send a fax throught it , half of the paper is transmitted or an usual occupation tone comes; while vocal communications are performed normaly.
Any idea of what could be the problem.
NB: the fax emission is between two distant sites relied by optical fiber.
Regards.Hello Frank;
Thank for the reply.
Here below more informations about the issue:
- It does work sometimes, but it did never worked properly.
- the problem is there for both sending and receiving.
- for the PSTN transport, i have no idea.
- I tried to change the ATA by another, still the same problem.
- ATAs work properly for voice communication.
- when i call this fax number internally the signal comes along.
- the problem is when faxing internally, it isn't used for external faxing.
- the call flow for internal faxing is like this:
Analog fax (in site A) > ATA (in site A) > access switch (in site A) > core switch (in site A) > cucm (in site A) > Core switch (in site A) > router (in site A) > optical fiber > router (in site B) > core switch (in site B) > cucm (in site B) > core switch (in site B) > voice gateway 248 (in site B) > Analog fax (in site B).
the problem occures when sending internal fax between these two sites A and B, when calling site B from site A, the ringing tone comes aloso the fax signal, but when i try the send the paper the stange tone come along and only half of it pass and it get to the site B as a blank paper or a half blank paper.
for any more explanation, don't hesitate to ask me.
thanks again for your time.

ATA 187 outgoing fax call issue

Fax can receive but not send using ATA 187
Hi, i'm fairly new to the world of voice so please bare with me on this one
I'm upgrading a customer from analog telephony to VOIP and the customer wants his faxes working.
Telephone works fine, CUPC works fine, CUBAC works as it should etc but the fax-machines can only receive faxes, not send them.
The setup is:
CUCM 8.5.1.12900-7
CUBE Version 15.1(3)T1
ATA 187.9-2-1-0
I'm using T.38 and SIP
When i put 2 fax machines on the new solution and test them they work. They can send and receive faxes but then the traffic is local and not sendt out over the IP-trunk. When i send a fax to a fax machine (from external) it works but when the same fax machine tries to send a fax externally it failes.
It places the call but when it tries to send the fax it gives up.
I've atteached the "debug voice ccapi inout" and "debug ccsip all" from CUBE for details.
This is the last issue i have to get this customer flying on Cisco equiptment (i hope).
/TonyHi
Sorry for misleading you on that one. I know its on the trunk
And i believe i found the cause of my problem. The DN wasnt presented the way the the provider wanted it.
The misleading part was that it failed on media negotioation, not on the call. The log even tell the story of media negotiation being succesful but it also terminates on "cause=64" which is media failure.
I was able to place calls, receive call and receive faxes but not able to send any fax at all. That through me off thinking there was nothing wrong.
Thanks for the help -
Unable to fax between two ATA 187 attached fax machines
I have two fax machines attached to the VOIP network using ATA 187's using the T38 fax relay. I am unable to send faxes between the two devices. Has anybody experienced this issue and if so what did you do to resolve the issue. Tried fax passthrough with no luck. Also set the dial peer on the voice gateway to use the T38 fax protocol. Thanks for any info.
Looks like I just answered my own question. Since both of these devices are on the internal VOIP network, 4 digit dialing between devices worked. I am able to send between the two ATA attached fax machines. Originally I was trying to go outside, using 9xxxxxxx, which did not work.

Encryption on Cisco 7940, 6921, 6941, 8961 & ATA 187
Hi,
We have CUCM ver 8.5 (Cluster of 2 servers, publisher & subscriber) registered with multiple 7940, 6941, 6921, 8961 phones along with few ATA 187 boxes. Everything is working fine but suddenly now business wants to enable security by encrypting data flow from few of these phones. These include 7940, 6921 and 8961 series phones, for testing purpose we had arranged the 2 security dongles needed for certificate generation. Followed each step whatever has been given in the below link.
https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-18834
Observation :- Cisco 7940 Phones (SCCP)
CTL file is succesfully downloaded but when trying to push LSC from call manager through "CAPF information" using "Authentication String" getting "TLS error to x.x.x.x" after the phone power cycles (reset). Also once the authentication string is put on "LSC" under the "security settings" we get a "Connection Failed" error.
Due to which we are unable to register the phones using secure profile (LSC not getting downloaded).
Cisco 69xx Phones(SCCP)
No security related settings seen on the phone itself --- do we need a specific firmware load / Call manager version for security to work on these phones (Cisco 69xx phones).
Update - Upgraded cisco 69xx phones to load version 9.1.1, now able to see the securuty settings
But still facing the same issue faced for 7940 phones, also the logs int the .txt file are similar. (pasted below)
Also as per cisco document these phones support security, link below...
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/6921_6941_6961/8_0/english/admin/guide/6921net.html#wp1092086
Didnt try any further with 8961 & 6921 phones as got stuck with the above 2 phones.
Troubleshooting Done:
Checked & verified the serial number of the certificates on call manager (CAPF.pem & CallManager.pem with CTL contents), verified the hash value of CTL file with the CTL file downloaded on phone everythings is perfect and matching but still the LSC`s are not getting downloaded on the phone.
Also there is no cer files generated in the path below except for the .txt file (screenshot below).
"file list activelog /cm/trace/capf/sdi"
common error seen in the .txt file is as pasted below..
16:20:21.474 | debug ERROR:10.1.200.45: SSL3 alert write fatal handshake failure
16:20:21.474 | debug ERROR:10.1.200.45: capfSSLHandShake Handshake failure

7940 Load information - P00308010200
6941 Load INformation - 8.5.1.66.22
Any help will be highly appreciated.....Hello, did you solve this issue?
We are facing a similar situation, kindly add any solution
Appreciate your reply

Hi there,
I configured both ports of a Cisco ATA 186 connected to CM 4.1. On both ports I've configured Analogue telephones. The telephone working on the 1st port works fine, but the phone connected to 2nd port will ring once and the connection is broken. If I change the ports then, the phone on the first port will work fine but the phone connected to the 2nd port got the same issue.
I hope someone can help me sort out this issue.
Thanks.Hi Sana,
Just a thought here, but the second port of an ATA only supports g.711;
Have a look at these two good posts that relate to this type of issue;

ATA-187 Disable / Prevent Speed Dials
Hi all,
I'm working with a customer that used a (star) * in there dialplan.
The issue has risen now that they have purchased quite a few ATA-187 for remote locations for analogue phones, because the (star) * is interpreted by the ATA as a local speed dial number rather than pushing the full number the call never gets to CUCM (8.5).
Any ideas or suggestions would be great,
Thanks in advance.Hi Andrel,
The ATA-186s where great.. Ok they had a lot of problems with faxes but they are better than the ATA-187.
The section below is from the Cisco document.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cata/186_188/3_0/english/administration/guide/sccp/user.html#wp1017166
Change Your Pre-Call Service Access Code
You can use the default asterisk key (*) or the pound key (#) as the first digit in your pre-call service access code. To change this setting, use Bit 25 of the ConnectMode parameter (see the "ConnectMode" section on page 5-21).
If you download the complete guide it's on page 158 (or A2).
You can change the "pre-call service access codes" e.g. change the *1 for #1 in the speed dials.

Mike. -
Cisco ATA 186 on Linksys SFE2000P-EU Single Collision Frames
Hi all,
Recently we've deployed a fresh installation. But from the start we had some issues with a fax connected via a Cisco ATA 186 to a Linksys SFE2000P-EU switch. Which then is connected to a Cisco 3560. All ports on the Cisco 3560 are looking fine, but if I look at the port to which the ATA is connected I see a lot of Single Collision Frames! Is this because the ATA is running on 10Mbps/Half Duplex? Because I don't get to see these errors when I connect the ATA directly to the Cisco 3560. And is it possible to solve this issue, because the customer is complaining about missing faxes.
Best regards,
Paul van den IJssel
DigacomPaul,
Half duplex will certainly cause collisions (CSMA/CD). Force the device and the switch port it plugs into to 100 full duplex, or 10 full if neccessary. I had a similar issue with my old PCMCIA Xircom 10/100 card. When I force the settings, all is well.
Regards,
Christopher
