Cisco Catalyst 2950/2960/3750 Multicast Traffic Preference

Hello all,
we, as a student company act as an ISP for university dormitories. We would like to (if it's possible) deploy QoS to prefer multicast traffic over all other types of traffic.
Devices used in network:
Acces layer: Cisco Catalyst 2950,  12.1(22)EA14
Dristribution layer: Cisco Catalyst 2960G, 12.2(58)SE1
Core layer: Cisco Catalyst 3750G, 12.2(52)SE
Do you see any possibility to solve this with these devices? We have almost no experience with QoS, therefore any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I think it should be doable although the 2950s, if non-E variants, are especially weak in QoS features.  I.e. those might create some issues.
With the 2960G and 3750G, you often will create problems when you enable QoS because QoS, by default, allocates its buffers resources for 4 egress queues per port rather than using all for 1 egress queue per port.  However, this can be countered by QoS parameter tuning, but that takes some QoS expertize to match to your traffic and your overall QoS policy.

  • DHCP on Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch

    Hello
I need to configure my cisco catalyst 2950 series switch in order to act as DHCP server for devices connected to its ports.
Please say me, how to do that ?
    Thank you
    Narek

Please find the sample DHCP configuration for one of the VLANs.
    Interface Vlan1
    description Cisco DHCP
    ip address 10.10.2.1 255.255.255.0
    ip dhcp pool cisco
    network 10.10.2.0 255.255.255.0
    default-router 10.10.2.1
    domain-name mydomain.com
    dns-server 10.10.2.10
    netbios-name-server 10.10.2.15
    lease 7
A 24 hour lease is the default if left out and the netbios-name-server is WINS in the Windows world.
If you want to use DHCP server for other VLANs as well create similar DHCP pools and assign the DG to the corresponding VLAN interface IP.

  • Cisco catalyst 2950 12.1 (22)EA4 not connecting to router

I shipped a newly configured cisco 2950 switch and walked a individual through connecting switch to uplink port to router. When the user connects cable from Dlink to port1 on switch we get no activity light on port 1. I went into switch by having crossover cable connected from new switch to old switch and change port speed and duplex and still have the same problem. User is utilizing a cat5 cable that worked on old switch. Any ideas?

    Hi
you can check the status of the ports on the switch with the 'show interface fa 0/x' command.
You should see something like this if the port and cable are Ok:
    #show interfaces fastEthernet 5/2
FastEthernet5/2 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
    Hardware is C6k 100Mb 802.3, address is 000d.28b7.fd09 (bia 000d.28b7.fd09)
    Description:
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,
    reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
    Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
    Full-duplex, 100Mb/s

  • RPS and Cisco Catalyst 2950 and 3550 switches

We are doing experiments with RPS and CC 2950 and 3550. When we unplug the main power, the RPS takes over and feeds the switch with power. But when we plug the main power back again, the switch contiues to take power from the RPS. How is the power reduncancy achieved with CC 2950 and/or 3550s?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dardan

You will need to press the active/standby button on the RPS for the internal power supply in the switch to take over. Note that this can cause the switch to reload and do it in your maintenance window if this switch is in production.

  • Catalyst 2950 and 3750 console not responding after successful boot

i just removed two switches from my ccie R&S lab but now i has a very strange problem switches is working fine but i can not access from console after boot .

Do you have any other devices you could use to check your terminal emulator is working?  I had an issue with hyperterminal once, that it would not transmit following a reboot of the device it was managing.  But in my case, re-booting the PC (with a proper power cycle) cleared the problem, so it couzld have been something to do with flow control.

  • RARP Server for Catalyst 2950 Switch

Is there a RARP Server capability for the Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch? I know that Cisco Routers support an "ip rarp-server" command. Do Cisco Switches support RARP?

To the best of my knowledge, the RARP protocol is working with cisco 2950 switch and also it supports in most of the cisco products.

Sounds like you've found the connector for an external RPS.  I don't know if Cisco documents the pins, and the RPS might "talk" with switch, so more might be involved they providing some voltage on those pins.

  • I cannot connect by console port to Cisco Catalyst 3750 using ethernet to USB.

Hello. I have one Cisco Catalyst 3750 switch, and two 2950 switches. I am trying to reset their settings using a console cable with a trendnet Ethernet to USB adapter. When I try loading hyperterm or putty on com3 there is no signal. I have the communication port setting on com3. I don't know what the old settings are, and they can be reset. I get connectivity lights when plugging the cable into the switch ports. What am I missing?

Are you definitely using the correct COM Port number? On Windows7 Right Click My Computer > Manage Then select Device Manager and expanPorts (COM & LPT)d  in my case is shows Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM5).
Once you have the right COM Port number just use the default settings in Putty. You may find the COM Port is locked up which will require a reboot.

  • Connection of LC/APC fiber patch cords to Cisco Catalyst 6500 $ Cisco Access 3750 Switches

I have an LC/APC fiber patch cord infrastructure and I want to connect it to Cisco Catalyst 6500 & Cisco Access 3750 Switches. what type of transceiver should be used?
I read a note on Cisco website stating the following for Cisco SFP+ transceivers:
Note: "Only connections with patch cords with PC or UPC connectors are supported. Patch cords with APC connectors are not supported. All cables and cable assemblies used must be compliant with the standards specified in the standards section"

Thank you,  but my question is that I have a single mode fiber patch cord with LC/APC connector while cisco stating a note that only use LC/PC or LC/UPC type of connectors with SFP+ transceiver.
So what type of transceiver should I use to connect LC/APC patch cord to cisco switches?  Is there another type or SFP+ still can be used?

  • Cisco ISE and Catalyst 2950

    Hello!
Please, could you help me? Is it possible to install ISE on Catalyst 2950? In Component Compatibility Guide
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.0.4/compatibility/ise104_sdt.html
Catalyst 2950 only support 802.1X and VLAN.
At first I need to know about VLAN change(from resticted to corporate). Is Catalyst 2950 support it?
    Thaks for help!

this would let both user and machine authenticate. for"5434Endpoint conducted several failed authentications of the same scenario" check  Suppress Anomalous Clients option.  This issue comes in to picture when endpoint attempts a couple of failed authentications and if Suppress Anomalous Clients option with Reject Requests After Detection is enabled then  ISE Policy nodes protect themselves from overwhelming numbers of authentication requests by sending an immediate reject for suppressed clients as opposed to processing all the steps in a normal authentication. So if that user did some authentication failure, he will be locked for 1 hours (bydefault).

  • Alternative switch to Cisco Catalyst 3750v2-24FS and 3750-24FS

I`m looking for an alternative to these two switches:
    1.  WS-C3750V2-24FS-S  Cisco Catalyst 3750V2-24FS Switch with 24 100FX SFP + 2 Gigabit Ethernet SFP Ports
    2. Cisco Catalyst 3750-24FS (WS-C3750-24FS-S 100BASE-FX)
They are now EOL and not available.
I have a campus style network and need to be able to connect multiple 100FX fibre switches back to a central switch. The 1st unit uses 100FX SFP modules and the second has in-built 100FX ports. I`m struggling to find anything from Cisco that will give me multiple (i.e 12+) 100FX ports.
Could anyone please point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul ,
Replacement for both switch is WS-C3650-48TS-S.
