Cisco Catalyst Express 500 Switch

Any comment about this product? I saw some negetive reply at several forums for this product. I am in puzzle wether to buy this switch or to go for 2960 series which is quite expensive but reliable. I never heard of Catalyst 500 switch.

I wonder if this switch is suitable in a environment where I have approx 90 user's. And I will buy 24 port 3 nos of Catalyst 500 switch. So considering uplinking and traffic, those switches will work smooth?
I am worried about conjugation and other issues like heating. 3COM base line switches over heats. 1 of my 3COM switch started making noise. Probably heat sink fan which is located at back panel is not working probably. I guess bearing is about to get damaged. Anyway.
I still can't decide. I haven't seen any good
scenario's at Cisco's web site. I guess due to the cheap price, they wont make any advertise of this Switch..Ha !!

  • Stacking a non-Cisco Switch with a Catalyst Express 500 switch

We are using a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 Ethernet switch and need to add another switch to get a few more ports. Is is possible to stack a Catalyst Express 500 Ethernet switch with a non-Cisco Ethernet switch. If so, is there any Cisco documentation telling how to do this?

If by stack, you mean connect the two switches via Ethernet ports, yes you should be able to do that. Depending on the port capabilities of the switches, and whether they have any special uplink ports, you might need to use a different Ethernet connecting cable (cross-over vs. straight thru).

  • Need that a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 behaves as cheap switch

Need that a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 behaves as  cheap switch.
I happen to have a surplus of CE500 and i need to use one as a layer 2 cheap switch (unaware of lan and with port protection off).
    How can i achive this?

That's the thing, i'm sitting on several CE500, i'm not allowed to buy a cheap one right now, i have to use what i have, i know is too much but it should work and i read that it does, there is only one problem, i need to plug a access point to the CE500 that connect this section of my network to the rest.
I can't make the CE500 to work with this AP, a cheap switch i had there before worked properly.

  • Catalyst Express 500 Switch and wlan roaming problem.

    Hi everybody.
We are using Catalyst Express switches and air-1121G for a wlan network covering a hotel. When we set the smartport-setting on switch to "access-point" users cannot move from one access-point to another. Setting the smartport-role to "other" solves the problem.
Has anybody made the same experience ?

    Hi
This is a known issue and the workaround you have used is the best but
this issue has been solved in the new IOS release
i would suggest you to upgrade the IOS for the Catalyst 500 and this should solve the problem
the IOS code is CE500 IOS 12.2.20.SEG
    Hope this help

  • Catalyst Express 500 switch IP addressing problem

I have a new switch and I cannot give it the IP address that I want to give it. My internal IP addressing scheme is 10.0.0.0 and when I try to give it an address in this subnet, I get an error telling me that it cannot have a 10.0.0.0 address. What is preventing and how do I get around it??
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, It does seem a bit of a strange way to go with a modern bit of network kit.
The switch always uses fast ethernet port 1 for setup, and always on the 10.0.0.0 network, but you cant even try to rig up some type of 'out of band' management scenario because you need to press the button on the front to go into set up ... so you would have to go into the server room anyway...!
In the end, the management address will not affect the traffic going through the switch. You could give it an address on vlan1 and put all your traffic on vlan 2 for example. Obviously you would need to be able to route to that address and include both vlans on uplink trunks to your router. I dont know if your network design will allow you to do that.
If not, and you have a big pile of these express switches you need to manage, try building a 'Management Network' This is a little neater and if planned properly can scale fairly well.
The idea here is that you create a new network with new ranges reserved specifically for managing your equipment and join it to your existing network with a simple 2 port router.
So basically you assign an ip address range to your switch/switches which is different to your deployed range, say 172.16.0.0/24. Then you configure your switches to be managed, via these addresses, on a different vlan to your user traffic as described above. So for example, vlan1 for your management addresses and vlan2 for your traffic.
Now, make one access port on each switch an access port in vlan 1 and connect them (via an aggregate switch if you have lots to manage) to port 1 of your router (which is addressed on your new managenet network range). Address port 2 of your router to the range of your production network (10.0.0.0) and use either dynamic or static routing to make youre core/downstream routers learn that the management network (172...) is via the new 2 port router you have just added.
You should then be able to web browse to the 500's from anywhere you want. Obviously you can restrict access as you prefer on the new router.
    Hope this helps

    Hi Saher,
    Here is the comparisons of the two switches;
    Cisco Catalyst Express 500-24LC Switch
Twenty 10/100 ports for desktop connectivity and four 10/100 Power over Ethernet ports to connect and power wireless access points, IP telephony, or closed-circuit TV cameras. Includes two 10/100/1000BASE-T or Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports for uplink or server connectivity.
    Cisco Catalyst Express 500-24TT Switch

  • I need online Configuration Guide for Catalyst Express 500 Series Switches

    Hi Mates,
Please is there an online help page for 500 series catalyst
I have this one for IOS 12.2(25)FY http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6545/products_configuration_example09186a00806da6c9.shtml
but I need more detailes like IOS 12.3(7)JA for Aironet 1300 http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5861/products_configuration_guide_book09186a00804ebd50.html
    Regards
    Saher

I'm afraid there is not such document for IOS 12.2(25)FY since the Catalyst Express 500 Series switches are manageable through the GUI Device Manager or Cisco Network Assistant.
I have also found key features and standards supported for that release:

  • Catalyst Express 500 802.1q with non-Cisco Phones

This weekend we spent hours trying to get 802.1q tagging to work on a VLAN with ShoreTel phones. The user interface on this switch seems to only allow "Cisco-Voice" VLAN, without any specifics. This didn't work. The specs on this switch say that the .1q is supported, but we couldn't figure it out. The more expensive switches were easier to configure for Voip QoS.
Can anyone advise me on the tricks to getting this to work with the lower end Catalyst Express 500? Or does this switch only support 802.1q with Cisco phones?

Cisco IP Phone uses CDP to let the ip phone know what vlan it's suppose to be (via voice-vlan). shore tel would definitely not use CDP since CDP is cisco proprietory, so it's voice vlan must be defined on it, I rememer Avaya being the same way. So, having said that, just make sure that the Shore tel Ip phone are in the right vlan. what does not work anyway? shore Tel IP Phone will not come up? Will not get it's configuration from it's software PBX? Use the smartport configuration on CE500.

  • POE for Aironet 1131 on Catalyst Express 500

    Hi all,
we are using 3 AP Aironet 1131 (Version 12.4(10b)JA3) in a WDS. All are connected to a Switch Catalyst Express 500 to receive their Power. The Problem is they work for some time and the the AP reloads without further errormessage.
Speed and Duplex mode are fixed on Switch and AP-Side. Does anybody now this problem or can give me a hint?
    Thanks in Advance
    Alex

This can happen if power settings are configured incorrectly on the AP. Ensure that the correct parameters are configured. Here is a link which explains how to configure power on APs.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/12.3_2_JA/configuration/guide/s32frst.html#wp1103896
Also, try disabling CDP and check if you are seeing the issue again.

  • Catalyst Express 500 - Cannot configure

I just reset the Catalyst Express 500 (WS-CE500-24TT V01) switch back to factory default by using the directions “Recover the Switch Software” in the manual.
After rebooting I cannot get to into the Setup Windows. It does not come up, either automatically or typing a URL in Internet Explorer. I went thru the trouble shooting section on the manual and I am having no luck.
Originally when I set up the switch and I was able to get to the Setup window thru Internet Explorer, however the configuration did not save properly or seemed so. After I configured and rebooted I could not access the management screen using IE.
I rebooted hit the setup button and then could not get in, I even typed a domain name such as cisco.com, this also did not work. I reset the switch as stated above to factory default. I have Pop-up blocker off, no firewall is on.
Do you have any ideas on how to resolve the problem? Bottom line I cannot get into the management console to configure the switch.

    Hello,
this is just a guess, but if you are using IE6, you might want to install the Microsoft Virtual Machine, you can download it at
    www.craftof.com/VirtualMachine.asp
Uncheck the Sun Java VM in IE6...
Regarding the recovery procedure, did you use exactly the one described below ?

  • Catalyst Express 500 24TT linked to an unmanaged switch

I'm trying to hang an unmanaged switch (netgear FS108)off this switch but with little success. I've configured the port on the Express 500 as a switch port but nodes connecting through the unmanaged switch can't fully browse nor can they receive DHCP addresses. Is there someway to make this work or are these Netgear switches simply not supported and won't work period?

Yup, that worked. I assume the same issue applies to the 'server' port setting. If I've created multiple virtual servers each with their own unique IP address, the 'server' port settings spits back an error not allowing multiple connections through the same port.

  • Cisco Catalyst 2960X Ethernet Switch

"I want to buy Catalyst 2960-X series switches like WS-C2960X-24PS-L,WS-C2960X-24PD-L, buy I'm not very well know about c2960x series. Can someone help me ?"--from yahoo answer.
All Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches use a single Universal Cisco IOS Software Image for all SKUs.Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Family of Switches are available with the LAN Base and LAN Lite feature sets.
    WS-C2960X-24PS-L Overview
    Catalyst 2960-X 24 GigE PoE 370W, 4 x 1G SFP, LAN Base Switch
    WS-C2960X-24PD-L Overview
    Catalyst 2960-X 24 GigE PoE 370W, 2 x 10G SFP+, LAN Base Switch

If you buy the LAN Base model, you'll have all of Cisco's normal switching features and options. My company has purchased many of these switches, and they work very well. Remember, these are access layer switches. If you're looking for something to be an aggregate switch for things that push a lot more data (ex. several wireless controllers), you'll want to go for something more powerful.
