Cisco CUCM NTP documentation/requirements

Hello all,
Just wondering about the "actual" NTP clock Stratum version requirements when
installing Cisco CUCM. As the three sources below show varying results;
So first we have the install guides;
Note
Cisco   recommends that you use an external NTP server to ensure accurate   system time on the first node. Ensure the external NTP server is stratum   9 or higher (meaning stratums 1-9). Subsequent nodes in the cluster   will get their time from the first node. When you are installing   Cisco Unity Connection on a virtual machine, you must specify an   external NTP server.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/install/8_6_1/install/cmins861.html#wp804989
Then the SRND;
Unified CM automatically synchronizes the NTP time  of  all subscribers in the cluster to the publisher. During  installation,  each subscriber is automatically configured to point to an  NTP server  running on the publisher. The publisher considers itself to  be a master  server and provides time for the cluster based on its  internal  hardware clock unless it is configured to synchronize from an  external  server. Cisco highly recommends configuring the publisher to  point to a  Stratum-1, Stratum-2, or Stratum-3 NTP server to ensure that  the  cluster time is synchronized with an external time source.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/8x/netstruc.html#wpxref14097
And finally the NTP  White Paper;
For Cisco Unified CallManager Versions 5.0 and later:
– Manual configuration of the ntpd.conf file is not allowed.
– Cisco  Unified CallManager prompts the administrator to specify the  external  NTP server at publisher installation and automatically  populates the  ntpd.conf file on the publisher server.
– The ntpd.conf files of all other cluster servers are automatically configured to point to the publisher as the NTP source.
• Configure the publisher to point to a traceable stratum 1 clock source.
•   Configure network latency between the publisher and the dedicated  clock  source so that it is within 40 milliseconds round-trip time  (RTT).
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6788/vcallcon/ps556/prod_white_paper0900aecd8037fdb5.html
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
Cheers!
Rob

Leo,
Do you have reference for this.
Still murky waters:
In 9.1 release Stratum 5 no longer enforced.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/9_1_1/CUCM_BK_RD7D4696_00_cucm-release-notes-911a/CUCM_BK_RD7D4696_00_release-notes-for-cisco-unified_chapter_0110.html
External NTP Server Requirements
The procedure "Set up first node" has been updated to remove the requirement that the external NTP server be Stratum 5 or higher. When you configure the first node, Cisco recommends configuring the publisher to point to a Stratum 1, Stratum 2, or Stratum 3 NTP server to ensure that the cluster time is synchronized with an external time source.

  • Integration Lync 2013 Online (Cloud) with Cisco CUCM 9.1

    HI
First i Don't have a physical or virtual Lync server in my network,
Do i have any chance to migrate with my Cisco CUCM 9.1
    Thanks.
    Ahmed Elshalh

Lync online won't support back-end integration with CUCM on prem. But if looking to try client side integration, Cisco's CUCI supports Lync online.
    CUCI: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/unified-communications/uc-integration-tm-microsoft-lync/index.html
    O365 support: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucimoc/8_6/cucimocReleaseNote8_6.html#wp363808
Keep in mind CUCI is a Cisco supported solution and not a Microsoft one, also CUCI disables most of the Lync client functionality.

  • User License for Cisco CUCM 7.1.3

    Hi
I need 30 unit license for Cisco Communication Manager 7.1. But I found that it's already  end of sale.
I want the unit license part number for cisco cucm 7.1.3 version.
And i found revised part numbers for user license (CUCM-USR-LIC ) but those for 8,x versions. If i purchase that will it support in CUCM 7.1.3?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
CUCM 7 is already end of sale.
CUCM 7.1.5 supports UCL.If we refer the ordering guide of CUCM 8.5, you can get UCL licenses [Basic/essential].
    http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/downloads/partner/WWChannels/technology/ipc/downloads/UC_8_6_OG.pdf
What I think if u place the order , you should get the licenses and at the backened, it would be DLU.
You can also speak to Cisco SE for further clarity.

  • Cisco CUCM 6.1.5 CodeYellowExit alarm(s) received

    Hi,
I am running Cisco CUCM ver.6.1.5 & two CUCMs acting as Publisher & Subscriber, Total Phones registered on CUCM is 94.
The Problem that I am facing i used to receive the below Alarm & I noticed the CPU is hitting 85% on both CUCMs so I found the Process called CCM is utilizing 80% of CPU usage.
    From Tue Feb 23 23:38:05 AST 2010 to Tue Feb 23 23:59:05 AST 2010 on node 172.30.145.4, there are 1 CodeYellowEntry alarm(s) and 1 CodeYellowExit alarm(s) received. On Tue Feb 23 23:58:35 AST 2010, the last CodeYellowEntry alarm generated: CodeYellowEntry AverageDelay : 31 EntryLatency : 20 ExitLatency : 8 SampleSize : 10 TotalCodeYellowEntry : 26 HighPriorityQueueDepth : 0 NodeID : CUCM-A
    Note:
I had disabled all  Traces for all CUCM types but still the problem exist.
I had enough MEM & CPU.
    Please Advice !!!

  • Cisco Prime 2.1 - required disk space

Cisco Prime 2.1 requires 300GB disk space. My customer has asked is there any way of reducing this requirement as they haven't enough space in their VMWare servers. Could it be installed on a 100GB VM?

You can thin provision. Trying to change the overall profile though will most likely result in issues sooner or later. When you run out of disk space it will fail in ungraceful ways.

  • Cisco Meeting Place - lab requirements

    Hi All,
Appreciate if anyone can just give me a quick pointer.
Apparently; I have limited/no knowledge of implementing the Cisco Meeting Place.
I would like to setup a demo lab/environment for practise.
I managed to obtain the Cisco Meeting Place 7.0 thru the Cisco Unified Workspace for Partners Software & licensing kit.
    It came with 4 CDs
    1. Cisco Unified Meeting Place Web Conferencing
    2. CIsco Unified Meeting Place Application Server
    3. CIsco IP Telephony Server Meeting Place (MCS7825,hp servers)
    4. Cisco IP Telephony Server Meeting Place (IBM Servers)
I would like to install it in a VM environment.
What else is needed from my side to run Meeting place as a demo lab??
I went thru its hardware requirements

    Application Server
    Media Server
    Web Server
Would i be able to run all the above 3 on VMware?

This works on your voice network.  There is a centralized server usually located in the same location as your CUCM with a SIP connection between the two.  Bandwidth requirements are the same as a phone call. If you are using G.711, then 60K+ per call. Each participant calls into the system on either an internal number or on a PSTN line with a dedicated phone number(s). The enter the meeting ID and are in the meeting. Beside scheduled meetings reservationless is also supported.   The MP Application Server handles managing the voices in a meeting and is the only server required.
MP runs on specific MCS server listed below and won’t install/be supported on other MCS servers.
    MCS 7845-I3-RC2 Dual Intel E5540 2.53 GHz, 4x300 HDD, 8GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G6 Server, part number AX693A
    MCS 7845-I2-RC2 (end-of-sale 12/09) Dual Intel 5140 2.33 GHz, 4x146GB HDD, 4GB RAM
    MCS 7845-H2-RC2 (end-of-sale 7/09) Dual Intel 5140 2.33 GHz, 4X146 GB HDD, 4GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G5 Server, part number 470064-887
    MCS 7835-I3-RC1 Single Intel 5504 Quad-core 2.00 GHz, 2x146 HDD, 4GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G6 Server, part number AX690A
Note: The MCS 7835-I3-RC1 does not support multinode deployments.
The following URL (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/ps5664/ps5669/tsd_products_support_series_home.html) is the location of a lot of the MP documentation.

Its hard to find expert on switches/IOS on the Network Management Forum, which is for NMS applications.
You should post this thread on Switching community of CSC forum.
Though, what i can suggest is to use SNTP.  Certain low-end Cisco devices only support SNTP. SNTP is a simplified, client-only version of NTP. SNTP can only receive the time from NTP servers and cannot be used to provide time services to other systems. SNTP typically provides time within 100 milliseconds of the accurate time. In addition, SNTP does not authenticate traffic, although you can configure extended access lists to provide some protection. An SNTP client is more vulnerable to misbehaving servers than an NTP client and should only be used in situations where strong authentication is not required.
SNTP may not be much of an alternative because it is not widely supported in software.
You can use command # sntp server. SNTP generally is supported on those platforms that do not provide support for NTP.
    Device (config)# sntp server {address | hostname} [version number]
For more clarification post this to Lan Switching and Routing section.

  • Documentation required for NEW OBIEE implemenation

    hi,
which documentation are required for NEW OBIEE implementation? what r their standard formats/template (ie. AIM )
Any one have sample doc for it? What is presales demo?

    Hello,
Greetings! I downloaded the documentation library for OBIEE 11g as zip file on my win 7 (64 bit) machine. I did the extraction. It took more than 1 hour to extract. It was accessing the oracle site during extraction.
Is it normal? Why does it go to oracle site for ZIP file extraction?
It created multiple folders. I find some HTML file on the root folder of documentation on my desktop. If I open it, it shows all the documentation of Oracle products. If I click the links, it will not open the respective documentation.
I did not find any getting started guide for OBIEE there.
    Any thoughts?
Could you let me know the relevant OBIEE documentations for learning OBIEE 11g?
What is the recommended sequence of going through OBIEE documentations?
    Thanks in helping me out.

  • Does Cisco LMS and CNC require what kind of access on device

I would like to know what kind of device access needs to collect information? I have another team trying to collect the information. I have given LMS server snmp access to Cisco Devices. It seems that snmp for LMS is not enough as per their comment. We have CNC server is different than LMS. Please advise. Thanks!!!
If you have sample output report for LMS and CNC will be also very much appreciated.

You can check the credentials required by LMS for managing devices for different features here :

  • Cisco ISE Deployment suggestion required

Require Assistance on Cisco ISE Deployment for below scenario
-- We have Three Cisco ISE Appliances and Client has taken Advance Subscription License for 500 users
-- Client has DC & DR and needs to deploy the Cisco ISE in one Main Office which connects to DC & DR on MPLS Links
-- Client suggestion was to deploy one ISE node ( Admin + M&T + Policy Server ) in DC and its Standby Secondary in DR
and only deploy Policy Server in Main Office.
Idea behind the design is that ,
         1) If DC fails , Cisco ISE related logs will get generated on DR and any Cisco ISE related request will be taken care by Local Policy Server in Main Office .
          2) If Local Policy Server Fails , then ISE node in DC will act as Secondary backup and DR will act Teritary Backup

  • Trunking Cisco CUCM 9.0 with UCS 500

In one of our branch offices use Cisco UCS-500 for local IP telephony and PRI. Now we would like to integrate this system to our main offices so that we dial all the 4-digit extensions.
Is it possible to trunk Cisco UCS 500 with CUCM 9.0. ?

    Hi
Seems you have codec negotiation problem when you are making calls from UCS to CUCM
. Can you post your UCS config here.
Maybe you have logging buffered enabled on your UCS as a result of which logs are not displayed on screen over telent session.

  • Cisco ISE NTP MD5 hash is 20-Bytes?

When attempting to configure an NTP authentication-key in the Cisco ISE CLI I noticed that it will not accept an md5 hash of 32 characters (16 bytes). Instead it is expecting a 40 character (20 bytes) hash. That is in line with a SHA-1 hash, not an MD5 hash even though there is no SHA-1 keyword, only an MD5 keyword.
    What's the deal?
Cisco ISE Version: 1.1.2.145 (Update 3)
    ise/user(config)# ntp authentication-key 75 ?
      md5  MD5 authentication
    ise/user(config)# ntp authentication-key 75 md5 hash ?
<WORD>  Hashed key for authentication (Max Size - 40)
    ise/user(config)# ntp authentication-key 75 md5 hash 12345678901234567890123456789012
    % ERROR: Bad hashed key.
    ise/user(config)# ntp authentication-key 75 md5 plain test
    ise/user(config)# do show run | i md5
    ntp authentication-key 75 md5 hash 97dc37c94236ec1b4c56871c2e482cbd6f56bd33
    That's not an MD5 hash as it's 40 characters long (20 bytes).

Hmm, that is an interesting observation. I am guessing that it is a typo and should be "sha-1" because 40 characters is definitely not MD5 :)
I would suggest you open a case with Cisco TAC and report this. If you get a bug ID or a different answer please let us know.

    Hi Flavio,
It happens with ISE and even ACS , they dont sync up properly or looses the synchorinization, You can either do no ntp server and ntp server again or you can restart the NTP service. even that helps at times
