Cisco ISE - General Info. & capabilities
Hello All,
I've read quiet a bit of ISE features, but would like to know the following:
1. Can ISE provide/track details of user activity, like which servers/websites he accessed over a period of time?
2. Can it provide details of how much data was transferred from a particular server to a specific client?
3. For a 1500 user env. (1000 desktops and 500 wireless devices) which model of ISE would be appropriate?
4. How would having ISE be different from already deployed authentication services like Active Directory or built-in application authentication for solutions like Oracle ERP systems?
5. I see ISE as being marketed primarily for wireles devices (BYOD), but how would it help for wired devices (or does it become and unecessary authentication level apart from AD, switch based 802.1x, etc)
Thank you.
Regards,
Adnan
Cisco ISE is a consolidated policy-based access control system that incorporates a superset of features available in existing Cisco policy platforms. Cisco ISE performs the following functions:
•Combines authentication, authorization, accounting (AAA), posture, and profiler into one appliance
•Provides for comprehensive guest access management for the Cisco ISE administrator, sanctioned sponsor administrators, or both
•Enforces endpoint compliance by providing comprehensive client provisioning measures and assessing device posture for all endpoints that access the network, including 802.1X environments
•Provides support for discovery, profiling, policy-based placement, and monitoring of endpoint devices on the network
•Enables consistent policy in centralized and distributed deployments that allows services to be delivered where they are needed
•Employs advanced enforcement capabilities including security group access (SGA) through the use of security group tags (SGTs) and security group access control lists (SGACLs)
•Supports scalability to support a number of deployment scenarios from small office to large enterprise environments
The following key functions of Cisco ISE enable you to manage your entire access network.
Provide Identity-Based Network Access
The Cisco ISE solution provides context-aware identity management in the following areas:
•Cisco ISE determines whether users are accessing the network on an authorized, policy-compliant device.
•Cisco ISE establishes user identity, location, and access history, which can be used for compliance and reporting.
•Cisco ISE assigns services based on the assigned user role, group, and associated policy (job role, location, device type, and so on).
•Cisco ISE grants authenticated users with access to specific segments of the network, or specific applications and services, or both, based on authentication results.
ISE 3315 can support 1500 users with appropriate license.

Cisco ISE 1.2 & Cisco WLC 5508 v7.6
Hi all,
we are planning to upgrade our WLC to 7.6 to fix a bug with FlexConnect Client ACLs but I have just seen on the Cisco ISE Compatibility table that the it only recommends up to v7.5 of the WLC 5508...
Cisco have told me to steer clear of 7.5 as it is in a defferred status, so does anyone know, or have running in a lab or production, ISE1.2 with a 5508 WLC v7.6 NAD ?
I would much rather know of any issues people are experiencing before hand than to have to go through a software upgrade and then rollback.
Thanks all
Mario De RosaHi Neno,
right I have this almost working now.
I have simplified the setup. I am not going to do any client provisioning at the moment.
So I can connect to the corporate SSID using EAP-TLS and I can successfully push the branch data VLAN upon successful authorisation.
Now I am trying to introduce the posture element & per user ACLs.
I have defined the redirect ACL & Flex ACL on the vWLC however the NAC agent will not pop-up. The client is in the right VLAN and the redirect ACL seems to be getting applied as the client does get an IP through DHCP. However, the client cannot ping the ISE or access the guest portal when I open the browser.
DNS resolution seems to be working fine.
VLAN220 is my datacentre VLAN which the Management Interface on the controller is plugged in to.
VLAN10 is the branch DATA VLAN.
below is some output to give you some more details...

Can you see any obvious reason why the NAC agent wont pop up?

Cisco ISE 1.2 Patch 6 -- 8 Update failed
Hi all,
I wanted to know if any bugs was registered for the cumulative patch 8 for Cisco ISE 1.2 and how to mitigate any patch failures.
Important notice : I though that this error could be an unlucky try but i've tested the update two time.
Indeed, i have three deployment : A Pre-production one, a 4 nodes distributed and a 2 nodes distributed.
The patch works fine on the pre-production one, on the 2 nodes too but fails on the 4 nodes one with a very anormal behaviour.
On the "show nodes status" in Maintenance - Patch manage, i can see that my both PAN are successfully patched and the first PSN too but when the "Patch in progress" appears on the second PSN, the "installed" status is cancelled in the first PSN and become "Patch in progress" so i've two "Patch in progress" in parallel, that is an anormal procedure not discribed by Cisco on the document "Installing a software Patch". (wich discribe a sequential update of all nodes)
The symptoms after this error are :
- Unable to process EAP-TLS authentications ! (CA are stored on the First PAN and seems to be unavailable from PSN to exchange the handshake)
- The Application server try to restart but fails indefinitly even if i try to restart the node (on both PSN)
- GUI Unavailable
- MAB Auth is working
- Endpoint and Endpoint Groups menus are missing on the GUI (I push the MAC Address through the ERS API but it is very strange)
- Logs indicates one first "Patch success" on PAN and a second "Patch failed" still on PAN :(
The task that resolves this issue is to launch the command "patch remove ise 8" on all nodes and everything come back functional.
My big interrogation is that on my two other deployment, the patch was successfull and quick to process.
Thanks for your help. This is that i did abviously... but the two PSN stay in status "Node down", the application service won't start correctly with these ADE-OS logs entries :

Cisco ISE functionally and license
HI.
I wanna configure the following on Cisco ISE 1.2.1.
Self-registration portal for guests (SSID: guests)
802.1x user certificate check (Cisco NAM supplicant) for employees (SSID: Corporate) (EAP-TLS)
Self provisioning portal (to deploy BYOD certificate and give access for BYOD devices) for BYOD devices (SSID: Corporate) (PEAP, MSHAPv2)
Can I configure these things with PLUS license or do I need Adv or Wireless? I am not sure if one of these requires profiling functionally. With plus license all the above items should work.
Here is what plus license supports:
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Profiling
Endpoint Protection Service (EPS)
TrustSec SGT
For more info, refer ISE license section:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/ise/1-2/user_guide/ise_user_guide/ise_man_license.html#41012

Cisco ISE - Posturing of a Linux Endpoint - Is it possible?
We have a customer who wants to implement Cisco ISE and one of their requests is to posture Linux endpoints in addition to Windows endpoints.
They have a set of system checks that they perform on Linux machines (catered towards RedHat) which they would like to be performed by ISE.
From what I know prior to researching for this request was that the NAC agent is only compatible with endpoints running Windows or Mac OSX.
Digging around, Linux endpoints are postured with a 'default-posture' status and thus an accompanying authorization profile must be set for 'default-posture'. I can't seem to find how to perform file checks, service checks, etc. on a Linux endpoint. Are these type of checks possible with Cisco ISE posture assessment on a Linux endpoint?
One item that I found is to use the Host Scan package within the AnyConnect Posture module on a Linux endpoint.
I see this as defeating the purpose of centralizing posturing on the ISE since the AnyConnect and ASA will be doing the posture checking.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.Hello Alberto, posture assessment is not yet supported with ISE/AnyConnect. For more info check out the posture section in the ISE 1.3 Admin Guide:

Unable to register secondary node on Cisco ISE 1.1.4
Hello,
I have a problems with registering the secondary node on Cisco ISE 1.1.4.
I did all like described on User Guide:
- Primary ISE is promoted to PRIMARY.
- DNS entries are added and resolved for both ISEs
- The "Certificate Store" on both ISEs are populated with self-signed certificates from both ISEs.
Durring the registration process (from Primary node), when I add the IP, username and password for secondary node, an empty popup message displayed with only button "OK".
So, I cannot proceed to far and don't see the error indicated what's wrong.
In attachment - screenshot with popup message.
I use IE 8.0.6001.
The lattest patch (1.1.4.218-7-87377) applied on both ISEs.
Is somebody had the similar problem?
Thanks,
PCHello,
In the debug logs "ise-psc.log" I see :

Cisco ISE 1.1.3 is running in standalone mode, when I made any configuration it show me the notification that "Configuration changes has been recorded but remain pending" any idea experts what could be wrong here.
ThanksFor issues regarding this you need to check the Cisco ISE Operations > Troubleshoot > Diagnostic Tools > General Tools > Evaluate Configuration Validator options. It also validate the several check on the potential network access device (NAD) configuration issues, including AAA,RADIUS, profiler, and web authentication.

Cisco ISE managing configuration
Is there a built-in mechansim for revision control in Cisco ISE? If not built-in, then what is the other way? I have been trying to look for documentation online but didn't find any.
Just to explain what I am looking for:
A way to properly manage all the configuration changes to ISE node. Changes are usually identified by a number or letter code, termed the "revision number". For example, an initial set of files is "revision 1". When the first change is made, the resulting set is "revision 2", and so on. Each revision is associated with a timestamp and the person making the change. Revisions can be compared, restored, and with some types of files, merged.
I ask this because "show run" output in ISE CLI does not give all the configuration details. How can we maintain the history of configurations?
PS: I rate useful posts
Thanks,
KashishThere is not a way to track which version a specific ISE configuration is on. The ADE-OS configuration, or cli configuration typically is static once the repositories, dns info...etc is all set and done. For the application database you can setup a timer where an automatic backup is generated, from there you can manage what dates a backup is good for.

Cisco ISE - CWA AD Authentication
Hello,
I'm using a Cisco ISE on 1.3 and have a CWA portal setup for AD Auth. When a user connects to a particular SSID (from a WLC) that is setup for mac filtering, it redirects to a CWA via the Auth Policy. the CWA is disabled, they login, the device registers, etc.. and all is well. The next policy checks to see if the device is registered, and if so, bypasses the Auth. Which also works. However, any AD account can authenticate against the CWA, not the particular AD account I want. I don't know where to put the Auth Policy or what it looks like. Any help would be appreciated. I've tried a few combinations to no avail.
Below are my current Auth Policies, as I mention above. They work, but the CWA validates any AD credential, not the group I want. Should a NetworkAccess:UseCase=GuestFlow go between the 2 policies perhaps?Hi Marc, what I meant by "desired_permissions" is what your environment/situation calls for. With that being said, returning back only "access_accept" with your "authorization profile" would work but at the same time it will give the authorized users/devices full access. So unless you have an ACL to Firewall off the guest users, you would need to return some additional attributes when trying to restrict/limit guest users/devices.
For instance, I like to use Policy Sets and dedicate a policy set per SSID and then either a general Policy Set for Wired or one Policy Set for Corporate Wired and one for Guest Wired. If you don't use policy sets, then you should create one "authorization rule for Guest_Wired and one for Guest_Wireless.
For the Guest_Wired, you will need to return "access_accept" and then a "DACL Name" that you can create locally in ISE.
For the Guest_Wireless, you will need to return "access_accept" and then a "Airspace ACL Name" That ACL is not a DACL (WLCs do not support DACLs). Instead, that is an ACL that you configure locally on the WLC, thus, the name must match on both ends and it is case sensitive!
Both the DACL and the "Airspace ACL" would contain rules that fit your environment/security requirements. Typically though you would have:
1. Permit DNS- Needed for DNS resolution
2. Permit access to ISE - Needed for the guest pages to properly load)
3. Deny any private/RFC 1918 addresses - Blocks guests from accessing internal hosts
4. Permit everything else - Needed for general internet browsing
I hope this helps!

Cisco ISE PRA Periodic Reassment
Hi Experts,
i have a good challenge.
Nac Agent 4.9.0.51
I've set the periodic reassment to 1 hour, the behaviuor is that, in one hour, the client pass to compliant state, to unknown posture state (with the respective WLC acl applied), and then to compliant status again.
What is not desiderable in this is that for the 10-15 seconds i have the client that is not able to reach the resources.
How can i avoid this? what i want is that the client that is checked every hour is still compliant DURING the checks.
I've seen that in Administration > Settings > Posture > General that is a setting about the default compliant state, anyway, set this to "compliant"
will lead to devices to be compliant during the "remediation timer".
AndreaThe Global Help icon is located in the bottom left corner of the Global Toolbar in the Cisco ISE window. You may check the ISE version there.
To launch Global Help, complete the following steps:
Step 1 On the global toolbar, move your cursor over the Help icon.
Step 2 Choose Online Help from the pop-up menu.
A new browser window appears displaying the Cisco ISE Online Help.

Hi, could anyone direct me where can I fine DACL format fo cisco ISE?
Bacause when I use simple ACL like
permit tcp any 10.8.26.0 0.0.0.255 eq 3389
My ASA says in log:
Unable to install ACL '#ACSACL#-IP-standart_vpn-50fa79e7', downloaded for user krasnoperov_as; Error in ACE: 'permit tcp any 10.8.26.0 0.0.0.255 eq 3389'
But when I use
permit tcp any host 10.8.26.1 eq 3389
It Install it corrctly, why it happens?
thanksHi,
Because that is not correct extended access-list for ASA (bad mask), example:
ciscoasa(config)# access-list test extended permit tcp any 10.8.26.0 0.0.0.255 eq 3389
ERROR: IP address,mask <10.8.26.0,0.0.0.255> doesn't pair
You need to type correct extended ACL without "access-list name extended".
This should work fine:
ciscoasa(config)# access-list test extended permit tcp any 10.8.26.0 255.255.255.0 eq 3389
Remember about wildcard/netmask - it's not a router

I suppose Cisco ISE sends a URL redirect to the switch and the switch presents it to the client in case of guest Access getting a URL redirect with User Acceptance Page (Wired Guests and not wireless).
My question here is, Do we need to configure http and https server on the switches (both supplicant and authenticator)?
I am sure it will need but just wanted a confirmation..
I have checked the configuration for supplicant and Authenticator switches for ISE and it has no where mentioned that part of the config.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.0/user_guide/ise10_troubleshooting.html (a problem of URL redirection and possible cause is mentioned) ------- makes me sure that the config is needed.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960x/software/15-0_2_EX/security/configuration_guide/b_sec_152ex_2960-x_cg/b_sec_152ex_2960-x_cg_chapter_010000.html
(config of supplicant and authenticator switch)---- nowhere mentioned of the http/https config for both switches.Yes, its needed. The http/s server within the swtich is used to grab the http user traffic and redirect the traffic to the CWA portal, or a device registration portal, or even to the Mobile Device Management (MDM) onboarding portal. .
ip http server
ip http secure-server
The info below I grabbed from Cisco ISE for BYOD and secure unified access book.
"Many organization want to ensure that this redirection process using the switch's internal HTTP server is decoupled from the management of the switch itself, in order to limit the chances of an end user interacting with the management intervace and control plane of a switch. this may be accomplished by running the following two commands from global configuration mode:
ip http active-session-modules none
ip http secure-active-session-modules none" -
Cisco ISE auth policy based on Active Directory domain membership
I am currently testing the Cisco ISE product and I am trying to find a way to assign an authorization policy based on domain membership. Our company sorts standard users and project team member into different domains so it seemed like the ideal thing to sort with. Unfortunately, I am no AD expert and there are a mind boggling number of conditions/expressions to choose from. I figured I would be the first person to try this. What have other done to solve this problem?
I have tried using the memberOf attribute and matching to .*(domain).* Basically looking to see if memberOf contains the domain name. It works for machine authentication, but when I log it the system cannot find my account info for some reason and boots me to the guest vlan.
Thank you.Are the two sets of users actually residing on two separate and independent domains? If so then that is probably where your problem is as ISE can only integrate with a single domain. If you have multiple domains then there must be a trust relationship between them. Another solution is to use LDAP integrations as there is not a limit with LDAP integrations.

Need Step by step installation guide for Cisco ISE in distributed environment.
Hi Friends,
If anyone is having step by step installation guide for Cisco ISE in distributed environment please shere!
I have user guide from Cisco, but does someone have created at the time of actual installation.
Thanks,
SachinThere is a trustsec 2.1 how to guide on cisco's website. There is also a TrustSec 2.0 ISE Guide floating around that has step by step instructions for setting up ISE 1.0.4. Which is still pretty accurate for the 1.1.1 guide. But if you go through the below site it should give you all the info you need.

I am trying to configure the posture for the ISE but the result is always " Posture status : pending " and the agent can access all network resources without any problem .
please helpPlease review the below steps:
Step 1 Choose Administration > System > Deployment > Deployment.
The Deployment navigation menu appears. Use the Table view or the List view button to display the
nodes in your deployment.
Step 2 Click the Table view.
Step 3 Click the quick picker (right arrow) icon to view the nodes that are registered in your deployment.
The Table view displays all the nodes that are registered in a row format in the Deployment Nodes page.
The Deployment Nodes page displays the Cisco ISE nodes that you have registered along with their
names, personas, roles, and the replication status for the secondary nodes in your deployment.
Step 4 Choose a Cisco ISE node from the Deployment Nodes page.
Note If you have more than one node that is registered in a distributed deployment, all the nodes that
you have registered appear in the Deployment Nodes page, apart from the primary node. You
have the option to configure each node as a Cisco Cisco ISE node (Administration, Policy
Service, and Monitoring personas) or an Inline Posture node.
Step 5 Click Edit.
The Edit Node page appears. This page contains the General settings tab that is used to configure the
Cisco ISE deployment. This page also features the Profiling Configuration tab, which is used to
configure the probes on each node.
Note If you have the Policy Service persona disabled, or if enabled but the Enable Profiler services
option is not selected, then the Cisco ISE administrator user interface does not display the
Profiling Configuration tab. If you have the Policy Service persona disabled on any Cisco ISE
node, Cisco ISE displays only the General settings tab. It does not display the Profiling
Configuration tab that prevents you from configuring the probes on the node.
Step 6 On the General settings tab, check the Policy Service check box, if it is already active.
If the Policy Service check box is unchecked, both the session services and the Profiler service check
boxes are disabled.
Step 7 For the Policy Service persona to run the Network Access, Posture, Guest, and Client Provisioning
session services, check the Enable Session Services check box, if it is not already active. To stop the
session services, uncheck the Enable Session Services check box.
The posture service only runs on Cisco Cisco ISE nodes that assume the Policy Service persona
and does not run on Cisco Cisco ISE nodes that assume the administration and monitoring
personas in a distributed deployment.
Step 8 Click Save to save the node configuration.
