Cisco Linksys E3000 - Open DNS Error

I just purchased a Cisco Linksys E3000 and got it set up pretty much the way I want it. My only remaining problem is I wish to used Open DNS as my DNS server. On Line chat support says,"Please access router set up. Under the set up tab you will see the option for DNS1 and DNS2 please change it to 208.87.222 & 208.67.220 and save settings". I replied"I am on the basic set up page and currently I see Static DNS 1 thru 3 which are currently all zeros is that where you want me to put the new DNS numbers?"
I made the changes as directed, saved and also flushed the DNS cache in Windows and in Firefox, rebooted and everything worked great.
The problem is if the computer goes to sleep or is shut down when it restarts it cannot find the DNS server! What am I missing?
Thanks

Thanks for your help. This one really has me baffled
As you can see below the static DNS is set to 3 adddresses for Open DNS and everthing works fine.untill either the computer goes to sllep or is shut down. Then the router can no longer locate a DNS server. The only way I can find to get everything working again is to zero out the address for Open DNS and reboot the router which somehow reestablises the DNS servers as:

                                       156.154.129.11

You can also this below and I hope you have some idea of what is happening. I never had this problem before with any other routers on this system.
Thanks,
Chick

  • Linking Cisco Linksys E3000 uPnP media server to non uPnP Home Theater system

    Hi,
I have a Cisco Linksys E3000 Wireless Router. My home theater system does not have uPnP capabilities. That is it doesn't have the uPnP client like a PS3 or a Wii.
Is there a uPnP client that I can buy for the specific purpose of connecting to my home theater system via ethernet.
The resulting connection graph will be as follows: NAS (via USB) to E3000, E3000 to uPnP client (using ethernet), uPnP client to Home Theater system using audio in or HDMI.
    Thanks for your help!

If your Home Theater system has Ethernet port then I think you can try wireless bridge ( WET610N ) to make it wireless.

  • Cisco Linksys E3000

    Hi experts,
our company just bought a  Cisco Linksys E3000 wireless router which we will be using as Access Point. So we connected the LAN port to vlan 10 which have DHCP but we static the IP, say 192.168.10.2/24, Gw=10.1 then the disabled the NAT. The router's IP is set to 192.168.20.2 and dhcp is disabled on the router since we wanted the 10.x dhcp to issue the ip to users. However we want to have a remote access and even if the remote access management is enabled, we cannot ping the 10.2 and web gui cannot connect. The only option we have is to connect a cross cable to one of its LAN port and connect to https://192.168.20.2 (the router's internal ip). we wanted to have remote access wirelessly. can someone help?
    thanks

please move this question to the smb community or to linksys support.
    Thanks.

  • New Cisco Linksys e4200 internal DNS not resolving

I have a e4200 sitting behind a BT home hub 2. The home hub provides internet connection to the e4200, and the e4200 allows all devices to connect. I am able to ping internal IP addresses, but when I try to ping by device name it returns the external IP address. How can I view / amend the DNS table on the router?

I've amended entries to protect my security, but this should give the general gist:

The "external IP address" which it resolves to is 82.98.86.161 www161.sedoparking.com - thank you for asking, I was previously assuming (incorrectly) that it was resolving back to the external IP address assigned by my ISP.
I'm still none the wiser as to why names are not being resolved at the linksys router for the internal network.

  • Linksys E3000 Port Flooding with Uverse DVR (IPTV)

I spent days trying to get a wireless router to work with my Uverse DVR.  I have a router-behind-router configuration (ignoring the WAN port of the router & using it effectively as a switch) because my Uverse RG is in a remote section of the house and I have a CAT5 over to our entertainment room where I need two services:  Uverse DVR and wireless network.  I did exhaustive research and testing.  The wireless router gave fantastic wireless performance, but as soon as I turned on the DVR, the ports would flood and the wireless network would become inactive.  I could use the wireless network or watch TV, but not both at the same time.  My router was a CISCO Linksys E3000 and I tried every type of tweak and configuration.  I also tried two other Linksys routers I own (WRT610N & WRT54G) with the exact same results.  I purchased a Netgear WNDR3700.  By the technical specs, the E3000 and the WNDR3700 should be nearly identical.  I quickly configured the Netgear WNDR3700 in the same exact router-behind-router configuration and it worked like a charm.  I didn't need to any special configuration of DMZ, QOS or anything else on the Netgear.  Other than the static IP for the router-behind-router, it was a plain vanilla configuration and set-up.
If anyone knows why the Linksys E3000 does not work, I would be curious to know, but it does not matter since my Netgear is working like a charm.  I would also like to note that CISCO has been very helpful, but these things can be quite complex.

    Hey kturner
    I allmost have the same configuration like you(router behind router, - 1. router D-link 624, 2. router E3000.
The connection is as follows: ADSL to 1. router, cableconnecting switchport to 2. router (ADSL internet in)  with first router
set to route LAN to LAN which gives an address on 2. router(E3000) 192.168.0.96 as in adress from the 1. router.
The E3000 then sets up it's own routingtable vithout any problem.
On the configurationspage you have to fill in at least the DNS 1. and if you haveallso DNS 2.
I've set my QoS via mac-address to my DVR and TV to high.
As both my TV and DVR is Samsung I had the problem with my TV and Samsungs Wireles Link System until
    I turned it off.
And now it's all working: Streaming video from the HD on E3000
Hope itøs helpfull and god luck

  • Error 36 with Linksys E3000

At first I was blaming Linksys. Now I'm blaming Apple. It appears there some oddity when using Finder to place files on a NAS-shared disk. I'm using a Linksys E3000 and a 320GB drive (formatted as FAT32). Windows, of course, works fine. In Finder, I can see files, but cannot copy them -- blocked by a -36 error. I can use the terminal to copy, but this set up is for my command line fearing parents.
I've read that the error has been fixed for directly-connected USB drives, but it appears to still be an issue for NAS-connected ones.
Any help -- or software updates -- are welcomed.

I am having the same trouble with my 2T MyBook Mirror Edition (RAID) Western Digital Hard Drive (formatted as FAT32). When I try to move a file over to the HD I get this Error, "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “filename” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)". Once I accept the error, the file looks like it has moved to the drive, however I cannot open it. I can only delete it. Hopefully, someone can find a solution.

  • DNS Error when I open IE

I have a computer that works fine and connects to the internet when I am on the LAN at work.  All TCP/IP settings are set to obtain IP and DNS automatically.
When I try to use it at home on my DSL it just give a DNS error when I try to open IE.
I am baffled.  I even tried to manually configure my IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS server but still can't get it to open.  The network icon shows it is connected but it only receives packets, it doesn't send any.
    Any ideas?

What equipment are you using to connect to the internet?

  • Having trouble setting up Open DNS with mac.

When I try to set up Open DNS I get the following error message:
Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.1/Basic.tri” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.
I have a Linksys router. I can get the router so save the settings using my Microsoft laptop, but I get an "oops" error message from Open DNS saying I am not set up on their site and just sends me back to step one. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

No, you cannot put the router in front of the modem.
You might look for any information your ISP gave you for your modem, such as a user guide. Or use the instructions at OpenDNS for a Motorola router, it should be similar. Remove the router and directly connect just one computer to the modem and try to access the modem's built in utility, as you have with your Linksys router. Motorola's default address appears to be "http://192.168.10.1/", the default username is "admin", and the password "password". If you encounter a question about obtaining the DNS service dynamically, check NO, then handset the OpenDNS servers, save and possibly restart the modem.
If you are successful in configuring the modem, go back to the router and leave the DNS settings blank, as well as on each computer. Then the computers should receive the service dynamically from the modem.
After all that, hopefully the OpenDNS website detects you using their service and allows you to proceed with setting up your account.

  • Connecting Linksys E3000 to DIRECTV DVR

I want to setup a hardwired connection between my Linksys E3000 router and a DIRECTV DVR.  I have the most recent firmware on my router.  I have checked the ethernet cable and it is good.  The lights on the ethernet port on the DVR light up when I have the DRV and router connecter.  The DVR gives me an error message when I try to connect.  Some other posts have suggest setting a static IP on the DIRECTV DVR using the following settings:
    IP Address : 192.168.1.10
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1
    DNS : 192.168.1.1
I tried this and still get an error message so I am going to call DIRECTV.  Before I do call I would like to know if these are the correct settings for a Static IP?

This is the screen displayed by the DVR is
         IP Address:           192.168.1.10      OK
         Subnet Mask:        255.255.255.0   OK
         Default Gateway:  192.168.1.1        OK
         DNS:                      75.75.75.75       OK
         Network: Coax not connected (9)
         Internet: Not connected (9)
         Result Code: 86-748
The DNS number is different than that in my original posting because I typed the wrong value in that posting.  The DNS number here is the actual value I entered when trying to create the static IP.

  • DNS errors HH3 flaw

Repeatedly getting DNS errors on my ps3, no other device.
And i have tried EVERYTHING. literally, you name it i have done it, i have searched the far end of the earths for soloutions and they have not fixed it. Funny thing is , it will work for a while, then happened again.
I have changed my Dns servers, port fowarded, DMZ, turned off UPnP (not all at the same time, although i did try that too).
I dont know what to do, if i call up BT and request they send me a hh4/5 as the 3 if faulty?
I had a hh2 and although i did experiance this problem with that time to time, changing dns on ps3 fixed it for the life of hh2.
Its ridiculas, i cannot go an hour without having this issue.

I ran the DNS test (http://www.doxpara.com/?p=1176), on the website of the person who discovered this security hole, and the test indicates that while my ISP has fixed their DNS, my Linksys wireless router (WRT54G) is compromised. Specifically, the test reports:
Your name server, at 68.238.128.37, may be safe, but the NAT/Firewall in front of it appears to be interfering with its port selection policy. The difference between largest port and smallest port was only 50.
I have been unable to located any information on the Linksys site that indicates a plan to release new firmware for Linksys routers. The only links I have found point to Cisco, where the plan is to fix their "heavy iron" routers.
Can someone from Linksys comment on plans to fix the Linksys router firmware base?

  • Linksys E3000 Connectivity Problems

I have a new Linksys E3000, 2 wired disktops (1 windows 7, 1 windows vista), 2 wireless laptops (both windows Vista), whenever the computers power down into sleep mode and are woke up, I have lost my connections to the router and I am forced to restart the computer. I've been told by one person that this is a problem with vista and windows 7, but wouldn't that have been a problem with my old router also?
any Ideas would be great, thanks.

At first I was having this problem with all the computers, I went into the Contro Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless Networks > (double clicked the router name) - when (router name Wireless Network properties box opened) > checked boxs Connected automatically when this network is in range (was already checked), Connect even if the network is not broadcasting and Enable intel connection settings (both of which were not already checked but are now).
After doing this I have not had a problem with the Laptops connecting. Both are running windows vista. I cannot find this setting in my Windows 7 machine so I tried simply setting my desktop to never go to sleep. this didn't fix the problem.
the adapter for the destop is Intel(R) 82578DC Gigabit Network Connetion.
I am using the Cisco connection software that came with the router.

  • ISP Reporting Open DNS Resolvers

I have a WRV210 in stalled at a remote client, it is set to do a point to point VPN tunnel to the company office (Windows server) another 210 at the other end.
Behind this specific unit are 2 Windows workstations(XP). The client just received the following email from AT&T:
AT&T has determined that a device using your Internet connection is configured to run an open Domain Name System (DNS) resolver. A DNS resolver was observed answering public queries at Jan 7, 2014 at 7:06 PM EST at the IP address X.X.X.X. Our records indicate that this IP address was assigned to you at this time.
Open DNS resolvers can be used for network attacks, presenting additional load on your Internet access and resulting in unreliable service.
An open DNS resolver allows users on the Internet to perform DNS requests on your server. This is considered an insecure configuration and in the majority of cases, Internet subscribers should not operate an open DNS resolver. The open DNS resolver may be present due to a default operating system installation or system configuration issue. In some cases, network devices such as home wireless routers have flaws that expose DNS service to the Internet.
To address this problem we ask that you take the following actions. If your computer(s) are managed by an Information Technology (IT) group at your place of work, please pass this information on to them.
If you use a wireless network, ensure that your wireless router is password-protected and using WPA or WPA2 encryption (use WEP only if WPA is not available). In addition, ensure that the router is not configured to provide open DNS services (consult the manual for your specific hardware). Check the connections to the router and ensure that you recognize all connected devices.
If your environment requires you to run an open DNS resolver, please limit access via an ACL, rate limiting, or another method to minimize abuse of your server. Visit http://www.team-cymru.org/Services/Resolvers/instructions.html for additional technical information on preventing abuse.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. We welcome your feedback and questions on this matter. Please contact us at [email protected] with any questions you may have.
I have no port forwarding setup nor do I have any port triggering. The workstation is not setup in the DMZ, the inside network is setup as 192.168.1.x
Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this?
    Thank you.

My brother uses the Cisco WRV210 for his home wireless network and he has the same issue.  He received the below warning from his ISP.  The ISP provided this link http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tools/dnscheck.html to run a DNS check for this issue.  I have reset the router to factory settings and upgraded the firmware but it did not resolve the issue.  I have checked that all of his devices are clean of viruses and malware to the best of my ability.  Even my own laptop, which is fine with my own home network, reports of this DNS resolver issue when I run the dnscheck when connected to the WRV210.  This issue is beyond my knowledge and expertise.  His ISP has terminated his service twice already as a warning, each time having to demand to have it restored.  As a result I reinstalled my brother's 10 year old D-Link router and although it is noticeably slower, it does not exhibit this problem.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Please be advised that we have received a report that your provisioned IP address is operating as an Open DNS server permitting unrestricted Recursive DNS Queries from anywhere on the Internet.
Open recursive DNS resolvers; have been used to generate an increasing number of extremely large reflective DDoS attacks, without needing a large number of infected hosts to launch the attacks.
Additional risks of open recursive resolvers include resource consumption by outside users without your consent, and, perhaps possible cache poisoning from outside entities.

if you are not running a DNS server and are using a home gateway or router, it may be possible the router is running a DNS server. Usually, the DNS server should only be accessible to the computers inside your home, however if configured incorrectly, it may make the DNS server accessible to the entire Internet. If you suspect your router may be the cause of this activity, we suggest contacting your router manufacturer's support desk for assistance in reconfiguring your router.
Please note that each end user is responsible for the security of their computer system while connected to the network and thus is ultimately responsible for network abuse that is conducted through such configurations. Failure to take the appropriate measures to prevent network abuse through your internet account may result in a service interruption / account termination.

  • WRT54G2 DNS errors when connecting online to PS3... at a loss for ideas...

Im having dns problems ever since PSN went back online and i cannot connect to the internet with my PS3 or log onto PSN. At first i would get dropped as soon i joined an online game, and it was running very slowly, but now it wont connect at all.
Wired works perfectly. Wireless wont work.
If i use automatic setup then the ip address fails.
If i manually set everything then the ip address passes but the internet connection fails and i get a dns error.
Signal strength is 100% and i have a Linksys WRT54G2 router. (worked perfect 2+ years until this week)
    I have Roadrunner cable modem.
I did ipconfig/all and enetered all numbers from there and didnt work.
I used standard dns like google and such and those didnt work.
Im seriously at a loss for ideas. Is my router broken? Please can anyone help?

I don't think it's necessarily your router. I've encountered the same problem on my WRT54GC and I used OpenDNS. But it gave me all sorts of problems with different websites so I had to take it out and use manual DNS. I used all sorts of combinations through until I got 4.2.2.2  to work.
EDIT: also, try going in to your router's setup page and click Status. Take note of the DNS values and use those in setting up your PS3.

  • While viewing a page I suden get "Oops! This page appears broken. DNS Error - Server cannot be found." However I can back arrow to the page

I just upgrade to versions 18.0.1. I am suing Window 7 64 bit.
Now I while I am viewing a page I suddenly receive the error massage "Oops! This page appears broken. DNS Error - Server cannot be found."
I can use the back arrow key to bring the paper back.
If I have several tabs open, I can watch one tab after another change from the page name, It doesn't seem to matter who page it is, Yahoo, Washington Post, NBCNews,

I am not a techie. I keep 15-20 to tabs open at a time for reference while working. When I upgraded to this version, all my tabs were closed and my history was erased. I still have not recovered from that loss. I do not want to have this repeated!
If I was using pdfforge extension (what ever that is) before the upgrade, why is it venomous now?
Besides this issue, since upgrading I suddenly starting having the audio from commercials being played from tabs that are not active (open). I now have to leave my audio muted.
I expected assistance from Firefox not some unknown individual ( iamjayakumars) who for all I know is a troll trying to get me to do something to expose my computer to attack.
I allowed Firefox to collect data they needed from my computer when I submitted the question.
Fix the bug in your program! I have used Firefox since it came out. I am within a hairs width of switching browser. The only thing holding me with Firefox is my bookmarks. If I figure out how to export them, I am gone.
    FIX YOUR BROWSER!!!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500a prints slowly over wireless on Cisco Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA6500

I have the HP Officejet Pro 8500a. I recenrly change my wiress router to the Cisco Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA6500.
Nearly every time I print, the documement remains "pending" for at least several minutes, sometimes as long as 20, until it finally starts printing. Once it starts printing, the document is printed quickly.
It doesn't matter the size of the document and the time it remains "pending." I've done test pages with just the word "test" in a Microsoft Word document, and it will remain in "pending" for well over five minutes.
If I print over the USB cord, there are no delays.
I need help. I can't figure out how to remedy this long delay when printing wirelessly.
On a side note in case this is helpful, the Linksys router does have a priority setting where you can select up to three devices for priority access (faster connection?), which seems to be more for bandwidth-intensive devices. I tried adding both the laptop I'm printing from and the printer to this priority list, but that did not improve the print connection speed.
    Advice please! Thank you.

    Hi Jim-Gr,
I understand you have an Officejet 8500A that has started printing very slowly after switching routers. I'm sorry to hear this has happened but will certainly do my best to assist you.
I appreciate you advising that you have tried connecting the printer via USB and it does make a huge difference. I'm also assuming your previous router didn't go this slowly either. With the things you have tried, my assumption is that it's a setting in the router that needs to be changed. If you're not sure how to change things in your router you can generally call the router company and they will walk you through it.
First you will want to ask them if there are any firmware updates for your router, if there are have them perform the update. If it is up to date already then have them make sure your router is broadcasting at a frequency of 2.4 GHz as that's the only frequency the printer works with.
Second, you will want to make sure the following ports are open:
    UDP: 427, 161, 137, 138
    TCP: 9100, 9220, 9500, 137, 139, 427
Once all of this is updated, then I would suggest you power cycle everything (turn off the printer and the PC, pull the power on the router for 30 seconds and then turn the other two back on once lights are back to normal) and try again. This should allow your printing speed to go back to normal
Hope this helps, have a great day!
