Cisco, make the Mediahub webinterface open-source.

It is a bold sugestion and probably never going to happen but, (as we say in Holland) you always miss of you don't shoot.
The Mediahub webinterface is not near working properly and I don't think Cisco wants to put a lot of effort in it. So, my suggestion: hand the whole source over to the community and we (A friend and I, hope to find some more programmers overcourse) will get it started.
Cisco, release the source and lets start killing bugs like a monster. If you prefer it to be done by a proffesional third party: de Monsters are willing to strike a deal.

Not a half bad idea - if Cisco doesn't want to invest anymore in this product open source seems like a good idea.

  • Do you have plan to make flash player to open source?

Adobe abandons flash player for mobile web browser.
We, many flash developers, can make great flash applications for mobile.
    We do not satisfy AIR.
If adobe make flash player to open souce, we can use it in our mobile applications.
    Open flash player source code!
Flash is best cross platform application environment.
    Adobe can't? We can!

    Hi daslicht,
im also very interrested to know the answer.
But im afraid they wont because it uses code from other proprietary tools.
And even if the community get flash catalyst source code, it will be useless (in a sens) mainly because the synergy with other Adobe Tools will not be maintained. And for me it was the main power of Flash Catalyst.
And knowing that, i think it is more easy for Apache community to create a new tool from scratch not linked to Adobe's tooling chain.
It could be a Flex app!!
For you information, the design view from Flash Builder has also been discontinued by Adobe. But in that case its a flex app incorporated in Flash Builder so theres good chances that Adobe will donate it to Apache community.
So why not use the design view as a base for a Flash Catalyst like tool? by making it a standalone tool or designers.

  • Is there an easy way to use the VMware Studios Open Source download?

I noticed there was a relatively current open source download package for VMware Studio, so I downloaded it, hoping there were instructions on applying the new software to the appliance.  The download was a tar.gz file, which appears to include source code for those OSS packages.
So, I am concluding that my hope that this was an update to VMware Studio was unfounded.
Is there any news, at all, about plans to update VMware Studio?  It is obvious that a VMware-internal tool exists as they use it to create their own appliances which appear to have fixed some issues, such as IE10 access.
    Thanks Dan

You do not need to invoke Finder to do this. Create a new empty Automator workflow and use the "Run Shell Script" option. Paste in the following....
    mv ~/Downloads/* ~/.Trash
You can then save the workflow as an application, attach it as a Finder action or add it to the scripts menu, whichever you like better.
If you would like to bypass the Trash and just completely delete the Downloads folder contents immediately, then paste in this command:
    rm -rf ~/Downloads/*

  • Can we trust the Adobe's promise of making the Folio format Open Source by 2014.Q1?

    Hi!
We have been following the Adobe Digital Publishing blogs and we got pretty excited about the posibility of having the Folio format as a Open Source standard, specially if this release comes with a .folio viewer we could use in mobile apps.
There are a couple of links that claim that Adobe will release the Folio format really soon:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2013/12/readership-metrics-open-folio-format.html
    http://eon.businesswire.com/news/eon/20131210005400/en
The question is, can we trust the Adobe's promise and get more and more excited about this release? Is this for real?

You should really be posting this in the Digital Publishing Suite forum here (where the folks who care are hanging out):

  • Sap Documentation and the Spirit of Open Source

    Hi,
I have noticed that not all of SAP functions have documentation (for example in SAP CRM there are around 80.000 functions and many of them, I dare say most of them, have no documentation and I suppose this is the situation for all SAP solutions).
I spoke to someone from SAP and I was told that not all of them need to, as they are not supposed to be used by clients. I agree with this and moreover it would be a tedious process for SAP to do it now. But sometimes need arises to use this functions or at least know what they do.
And the standard search for Functions .....
One enters "dialog popup" in Short description and he gets nothing (in SAP CRM 3.1 SP06).
She/he has to enter "dialog Popup" and thus gets the function POPUP_TO_CONFIRM
It is LUDICROUS ! Need no say more !
I do have an idea, SAP community could help out.
If all the functions would be shared among the SAP developers from all over the world – I mean those who would like to participate in this project - all functions will have documentation in less than 1 year.
Let's take as example - PHP:
Every function is documented and an example is given.
Also, developers from all over the world add their own comments for each function.
There is a .chm help file very easy to search
    Plan:
There would be one main writer and one main reviewer for a function (I mean one could choose to do 100 functions, other 50, other 30, and so on).
Also, who wants could add his/hers comments.
    Objective:
To have a documentation (.chm file) as comprehensive as possible about all the functions in SAP.
Is this plan feasible ? Are there any volunteers ?
    Mihai

I can agree on some points but not others.  First, let's agree that dialog popup and popup dialog are two different search strings.  In SQL, this would produce "WHERE description like "%dialog popup%" which is clearly not equivalent to "%popup dialog%".  However, I feel your pain.  While the level of function docs is disappointing, how wonderful that we even have access to them at all!  One of the best parts of SAP is the fact that I don't have to guess "how that works".  I can go look and learn from the master code ... albeit slowly.
My understanding of German is non-existent.  Therefore, much of the comments that are available in the functions are lost on me.  That's a shame.  I would like to see an effort to get readable English comments out of these valuable German comments.  That' would take a native speaker's translation vs. a babelfish-like systran.  They just don't cut it.
Docs:  The level of SAP documentation in general, even for BAPIs, is appalling.  Maybe I just don't know where it is but from what I've seen, even the most complex BAPI docs are not worth the space they take up.
Case in point: BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2.  This is a rather complex BAPI which can create all manner of sales documents.  So let's say I want to build a configured sales order.  Let's hit the BAPI documentation:
<i>If the item is configurable, you need to enter the configuration data in the ORDER_CFGS_REF, ORDER_CFGS_INST, ORDER_CFGS_PART_OF and ORDER_CFGS_VALUE tables.</i>
That's it.  There might be a few more hints down the page but there are no examples, no "here's why you need to stick an A in field XYZ", etc.  This is why I rely on reading code and trying to gets hints from poorly translated German comments.  I generally get an answer but what a time waster that is!  If SAP is claiming that they don't document all functions because they are not "supposed to be used by clients", then how about fully documenting the BAPIs at least?  Those certainly ARE for use by clients.  That's their main purpose.
As a concept, I agree with you.  How to pull that off?  Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable documenting any function that I've not had 1st hand experience with.  Even still, I've only used about 20% of the sales order BAPI's capability.  While that's 18% better than what SAP gives, I'm not sure I would be willing to take the time to document it given that I'm stretched to the max, in part, due to the lack of function docs!  Catch-22.
Good luck with the idea.  I'd like to see what other people's comments are.  I'm hoping that I'm missing some key documentation resources.  If nothing else comes from this thread, that would be great.
Maybe the SDN would provide a place/forum to store documentation that is created?  Not a forum ... more like SAP notes (which can be a helpful source of docs sometimes BTW).
    Thanks.

  • Arrgh! Is anybody else having problems with the Adobe Acrobat open source approach to handling PDF files? I am getting as many as three crashes and full reboot per day and the delays are terribly frustrating.

Do I have a registry problem?
Every time I open a PDF file my local Adobe Acrobat (6.0) installation opens AND the file displays in Firefox (v. 4.0.1). When I close the PDF file it tells me other PDF files are open and asks if I'm sure I want to close Acrobat.
The process is messy and somewhere, before too long there is a memory error that causes the whole system to crash.
Is anybody else having this problem? Does anybody have any idea how to fix the conflict?

    can someone help me asap!!!

On the Mac, 'maximize' (the green button in the title bar) is +context sensitive+ - it expands the window based on the content of the window. If the content is not screen-filling, the window won't get any bigger than necessary. There's no 'global' solution to this for OS X, but for Safari in particular, the Saft plugin has an option for full-screen browsing.

  • LiveView: Make it 'open source' for the benefit of all

First, let me start by saying LiveView is a great concept.  However...
SonyEricsson needs more than just a great concept to make this a useful and successful product.
At present, it is horrendous and they should be embarrassed with releasing this device to the market in its current state.
The hardware is average but the software/firmware is absolutely awful, leading to an extremely unreliable / barely useful device.
My experiences since receiving my LiveView have not been dissimilar to the rest of the users who have seen frequent disconnections / lockups / non-working features.
It is clear that there is interest in this device from the Android Community / Xda-Developers, etc. with many members keen to resolve LiveView's issues themselves - yet they are limited by a closed platform. Given Engadget's review of the LiveView, SonyEricsson's poor track record of providing continued support / updates to their products and their statement that there will be no updates issued for the device - I would think it not inappropriate to demand that an update at least be made to make the software entirely open source, or firmware/code released with a vehicle/drivers for updating.
I'm sure if the community were given the freedom, they could make the software reliable, customisable and perhaps even define innovative new ways to use the hardware.
If that happens, there's increased interest in the community which in turn would lead to more sales.
SonyEricsson, why not leverage the benefit of a willing (and free) workforce that are more interested in improving your device than you are?
(TLDR) In short, SE's failure to provide a fully functioning reliable product combined with their lack of commitment to continued support has paved the way for a global community of very tech savvy individuals and groups, willing to devote their time freely to improving LiveView. I say to SonyEricsson, let them - everyone wins.
To other customers, would you support making LiveView open source?
If so - let SonyEricsson know here and by submitting an e-Mail via their Support site (for UK, where SE's global management team is based):http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/common/contact/contactusemail/accessories?cc=gb&lc=en

Once there is a successor model, I would welcome it very much if the source code is released, and the owner of the MN800 can finally use their device.

  • Open Sourcing an iPhone Application acceptable under the License Agreement?

I've read through the licensing agreement, but I'm still not convinced either way. I want to make my iPhone application's source code available on the internet and set up a project page and SVN repository on a site such as Google Code. I wouldn't be distributing my signing keys and would be the single source for submitting the app to iTunes. Is this allowed under the License Agreement?

(Disclaimer: IANAL, I'm just a smart guy who's worked on GPL projects.)
That isn't the relevant part of the iPhone license agreement. The GPLv2 (which is probably the most important open source license for this question, as it's both very popular and has restrictions on mixing with proprietary code) does not encompass headers and libraries that are part of the operating system. That's how people can write open source Windows and Mac applications--believe me, Microsoft would not be pleased if someone contacted them and said that since Gaim was open source, they had to release the source code to the Win32 API. So the GPLv2 would not attempt to "annex" anything provided by Apple, and thus it wouldn't violate that section.
What may be relevant is the iPhone license section concerning confidentiality. If the class, method, function and constant names are considered "Apple Confidential Information", you would be in violation of the contract if you distributed code that revealed them. I rather suspect that nothing in the Foundation or Core Foundation frameworks could be considered confidential, as information about them is freely available to anyone who has the Mac OS X Core Library, which is distributed with every copy of Leopard. UIKit, Core Location, etc. are another story; I personally think that the fact that the APIs are included in the free SDK ought to preclude considering them confidential, but Apple might think differently.
In other words: you're definitely safe using LGPLv2 libraries. If the code would also compile with the Mac OS X SDK, you're almost certainly safe releasing it under the GPLv2*. If the code uses UIKit or other frameworks documented in the free SDK, you may be safe releasing it under the GPLv2. If you release any code that uses APIs that only licensed developers have access to under the GPLv2, you're probably totally screwed.
The GPLv3 is much stricter, and so the story there might be different; for example, I think it may have key-releasing requirements that would conflict with the contract. I don't really know much about it, though.
\* Remember, the original copyright holder can create alternate licensing arrangements for specific people. So he can say "anyone can use this code under the GPL, and as a special exception, it can be linked against FooCorp's non-GPL software". But to use anyone else's GPL code, you'd have to get all of the authors of that code to agree to the same exception. Alternately, you can just release your own code under the LGPL instead and then it's all good.

  • We have build a nice Flex BI front end and want to open-source it would this be useful to the group?

Hello, I am the CEO of DataRoket (www.dataroket.com) and we are a data integration and analytics platform.  As part of our effort, we have built a really nice data visualization and reporting package.
Since this is not our core business and we want to give back to the community and also see it continue to evolve, we are going to open source the Data Visualization module of data roket.
You can look at the application by going to www.dataroket.com.  If we did this, we would like to get some people to work on this and use it freely for your clients etc.
I want to know two things please:
    1. is this interesting and would it be useful to the community
    2. Are there people that would like to continue to push this capability and shepard the open source effort with us?
Thanks in advance for your feedback

I like the idea of open source.  Have you considered adding a demo/dummy Flex
app to your website for a fictional business.  Just to show your capabilities.

  • DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's

I'd like to have this project included in the Open Source Oracle tools list at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/community/opensource_projects.html
I’'ve been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I'’ve always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Home’s and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now it’s in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OS’s, other Shells, and other Databases.
Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:
DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts designed to make it easy for DBA's to use Databases in a command line environment. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh and bash on AIX, Solaris, Linux. The code base itself is 3 years old and has been in use in Production environments all of that time.
    Features include:
    * Automatic setting of all environment variables based on SID requested.
    * Manage PATH's and other path like variables for each ORACLE_HOME needed.
    * Run scripts with stored passwords (no more hard-coding of passwords!!)
    * Automatically set SID based on Script location (makes it easier to share scripts between SID's)
    * manage temporary script output and check for oracle errors in output
    * check database status and versions from scripts
    * stop/start databases in parallel (faster startup)
    * compile all database objects
    * analyze objects in parallel (Faster analyzes)
    * set aliases and variables for common SID areas, etc..
    * many helpful commands for common Oracle tasks
Over a thousand people have already downloaded the prior release and more are downloading every hour.
I'm seeking feedback from anybody that would be willing to take a look at the project, trying it out, give me any feedback you have on it, and perhaps even direct me to where I could best promote this project.
I wrote a tutorial that shows at a glance some of the more useful features of DBAShell:

  • Open source shopping cart wont open with safari

    Hi all...
I'm designing cart templates for a company that supplies an interface for uploading product to an open source shopping cart. The problem is I can't open the shopping carts with safari. They are fine with firefox and on a PC. (forgive me for swearing) The sites are open source carts based on php scripting with a lot of compressed data. A software interface is used to upload products etc... The error I get is
"Safari can’t open the page “not sure if I can put the link here as it is a business”. The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bug to Apple..."
It's the same for all the sites using the carts.
Is there a fix at the user end or does safari simply not have support for these carts. Any help would be awesome....

PCI Compliance. As a merchant (online or brick & mortar store), you must take necessary steps to ensure your customer's CC info doesn't fall into the wrong hands.  One way to do this is to pass your online customers off to a 3rd party processor like PayPal or Authorize.net. These companies are experts in safely gathering sensitive data, encrypting it and transmitting it to your payment Gateway and Merchant Bank account.  This way, your customers never enter any sensitive data into your site's databases which avoids a lot of headaches for the web developer and merchant.
Server Security. Use a reliable web host. I can't emphasize this enough.  Cheap hosting is no bargain especially if your host doesn't take reasonable steps to secure their servers at their end.
Lock down your php scripts & form log-ins to defend your site against possible hackers & robot exploitation.  If your site is ever compromised, you will need reliable backups of your Site files and MySql data.  Make sure to backup these files regularly and store them in a safe place.
Backend log-in.  Use strong, encrypted passwords -- 17 characters, upper & lower case with symbols.  If you can remember your passwords, they're not strong enough.  I keep mine written down in a Rolodex.
Change the Admin log-in name to something less obvious like GrandHighExhaltedMysticRuler or something only you will recognize as the site's admin level user.  It's also a good idea to change your server, database and backend log-ins regularly.
Finally, consider running SecureLive on your web server. I have it running on a dedicated server and this software has more than paid for itself.  It identifies hacker attempts, blocks the user and sends the hacker's IP address to an FBI database.  SecureLive - Home
