Cisco MDS 9418 switch doubt

Hi Team,
We have an issue, whether the cisco MDS 9418 switch supports FCIP feature.
We are planning to migrate the data from our old data center over WAN to the EMC VNX storage box in other location.
In our old data center we have 2 FC cisco switches connected to the EMC clariion storage array. Inorder to replicate data from clariion box to EMC VNX box over WAN ,it can be done via FCIP.
I wanted to know if we can use insert the FCIP converters into these MDS 9418 switch or do we need to have separate FCIP converters.
Do we need FCIP converters on both sides for doing replication over FCIP.
For clear understanding please see the attachment.
Will waiting for your response......
Regards,
Pranav.

Hi,
Since the 9148 does not have IP interfaces, something will be needed to tunnel the FC into IP (FCIP) such as an MDS 9222i, which has both FC interfaces and GigE interfaces and supports FCIP.

David

  • Cisco MDS series switch details

Hello I 'm new to CISCO  Switch world.
I 'm working as Clariion Admin and have have taken up the responsibilty to manage switches.Since,i am a novice i need little guidance on how work on cisco switches.I know the Zoning (how zoning done on MDS 9000 series switches) part ,but would like to venture deep into the details on CISCO MDS series switches.
Like, the use of Port channels etc.
Will really appreciate if some one can help me with a link or place ( not the configuration guide) where in i can find details on concentrated more on the theory part .
    Thanks in advance!

Actually the best info is in the configuration guides.  There are some external companies that run training sessions on the MDS to provide in depth training.  There is the MDS cookbook available on CCO that is also a good point of information.    If you search on 'MDS white papers' after you login into Cisco.com, there are several good documents that might meet your needs.
    Hope this hels,

  • Does cisco MDS 9000 switch by default set a little higher R_T_TOV?

    Hi, All:
Not sure anyone has done LOS for cisco MDS 9000 switch before. I tried to insert code violation which is equal to 103ms but only see link reset but not NOS/OLS. is it because that Cisco MDS has default higher ? Or can we set R_T_TOV on switch?

Hi Larry - [this|http://lists.apple.com/archives/usb/2008/Oct/msg00021.html] was the only thing I could find about transactions timing out, but since you don't have anything plugged in, it really doesn't apply. Have you tried resetting your SMU?
If that doesn't work, run Disk Utility from your install disc and see what it comes up with. Your suspicion that the MB may be faulty is probably correct, and if you are still within the 90 day warrant period, you should call the repair place and have them replace it yet again.

  • Using Cisco MDS 9148 switch for switching and routing

    Hi Gurus,
Can you please advice me! Can i configure interface trunking, routing and dhcp services on the Cisco MDS 9148 switch?
    Thanks for your response!!

    Tommy,
MDS9148 is a Storage SAN Fibre Channel switch, it doesn't support Ethernet, IP, VLANs, VLAN trunking, 802.1Q, IP routing, DHCP. It's meant for Fibre Channel connectivity between Fibre Channel server HBAs and Fibre Channel storage.

  • Steps to upgrade Cisco MDS core switch

    Hello,
We wanted to upgrade our Cisco SAN core switch firmware. Currently we are running below firmware version. We wanted to go to latest version NX OS 5.2 (x) but as per the white paper i need to go to 5.0 (X) and after that i need to upgrade it to 5.2 (x). Can some help me with the steps to follow the upgrade. I have th cook book but just need the main steps to perform the upgrade.
    kickstart: version 4.1(1c)
      system:    version 4.1(1c)

are you using IVR non-NAT, if you are you need to convert to IVR-NAT before you go to 5.2. Other than that you just follow the  normal procedure, look at the release notes for each firmware to make sure your hardware is supported and then do the usual
install all system bootflash:m9x00-xxx.bin kickstart bootflash:m9x00-xxx-kickstart-xx.bin
as a side note, i know you don't mark people replies to your questions as helpful/correct on EMC ECN ..at least do it here to show your appreciation.

  • How to configure an external Cisco MDS 9124 Switch

I have worked with some other Fibre switches before but not Cisco and was wondering if someone can pass me some quick info on how to configure the MDS 9124. I saw the Quick Guide and it briefly talked about config, but do I have to go thru hyperterminal to do the initial IP config? Is there a default one already I can use to get to the WebGUI. Some of the ones I worked with (like the ones that come with the Bladecenter) have a default IP, where I can enter the IP into the web browser and access the GUI right away and start doing configs.
With the MDS 9124, can I do this? Or do I have to configure IP thru hyperterminal and then install Fabric Manager etc.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I assume that you actually read the guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/hw/9124/quick/quide/9124QSG.html
Setup of the network is pretty clear. If the switch is brand new, you have to give it an IP address. Generally just follow the dotted line and don't vary except if you know what you are doing.
Once its on the network, DM and FM can do the rest.
The 9124e's don't have serial ports so the OA looks after that for you.

  • How to keep a Fabric port always enable in a Cisco MDS 9000 Switch?

    Dear members:
I work in Datacenter automation solutions using most part of time Virtualization softwares.
I'm having an interst problem with a server while it is booting thru SAN using a logical volume stored in a EMC DMX4 array.
We are trying to boot a VMWare ESX 4.1 OS, but when OS tries to change HBA BIOS driver to ESX device driver during boot process, the Server's HBA logged off from MDS Fabric that it is connected, ESX can't boot and I got a ESX standard prompt.
I think that problem is becuase ESX 4.1 is taking too long to load Storage Drivers during boot process and the consequences is HBA logged off from Fabric.
I already tried to change FLOGI parameters in HBA and Topology architecture, but I didn't have success.
If a try to boot a Microsoft OS like Windows 2008, I don't have this behavior, and OS can boot from SAN without any problem.
Please, if anyone have any idea about how to keep fabric port always enabled, let me know. Any idea or help is very welcome.
    Best Regards.
    Alexandre Nicolau

  • Cisco MDS 9148 compatibility with Finisar FTLF-8524-P2BNV SFP+

    Hello,
I have a Cisco MDS 9148 switch with Finisar FTLF-8524-P2BNV SFP+ modules. I am told by the guys configuring the equipment that these modules are not identified in the switch interface.
I am curious if there could be a compatibility problem (I have not found a compatibility list) or any other issue which could cause the behaviour.
    Thank you

  • Scsi device discovery in Cisco MDS switches

I was using this device discovery to find out how many luns can be seen on that server.
I tried to use discover scsi-target command and it does not give much useful information. and I do not want to add the OS WWNS on my LUN security in addition to HBA WWNS for the host group on the array end.
The problem that I am having is that I can see 7 LUNs out of 9 when I connect to Cisco MDS where as in brocade I can see all the LUNs.
I checked the LUN security and zoning and everything seems to be correct.
If Cisco SAN OS has commands where by I can see what LUNs can be seen on the switch, that would be really helpful. But It looks like LUN/LDEV info cannot be seen through discover command.
Please let me know how to troubleshoot this problem
    Thanks

In the array, I tried to add switch wwn to the LUN Security and zoned the same switch wwn on the MDS. Is there anything I am missing. Thanks in advance
But still I could not see any LUNs. When I do discover command, NLUNS shows 0.
and the command sh scsi-target lun os win shows nothing.

  • AAA and Cisco MDS switches.........

have configured Cisco ACS 4.0 (TACACS) with Windows AD for all Cisco MDS switches and it is working fine. But local "admin" access to the Cisco MDS switches via telnet is not working. At the same time , if I create a user with "network-admin" role locally, that works but not the default admin user.
Could anyone help me in this regard.

local. Below is the script I used to configure TACACS (Cisco ACS 4.0) on Cisco MDS switches.
    config t
    # Enable TACACS+
    tacacs+ enable
    tacacs-server host nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn key 0 xxxxxx
    tacacs-server host mmm.mmm.mmm.mmm key 0 xxxxx
    # Specify TACACS+ Server groups
    aaa group server tacacs+ tacgrp

    server mmm.mmm.mmm.mmm
aaa authentication login default group tacgrp

  • AAA for Cisco MDS Switches

I have configured Cisco ACS 4.0 (TACACS) with Windows AD for all Cisco MDS switches and it is working fine. But local "admin" access to the Cisco MDS switches via telnet is not working. At the same time , if I create a user with "network-admin" role locally, that works but not the default admin user.
Could anyone help me in this regard.

    You have two options.
    1. Configure an "admin" user in AD. (note that you don't have to use the account named admin, you can just as easily assign a local user with the network-admin role). One thing to note, is that you normally use this local account in case the tacacs+ or radius authentication server goes down.
You can have users configured locally and AD at the same time. If you are running AAA the default config is to check your AAA servers first, if they are not available, then to default to a local account
    2. Configure your local network-admin role user and then specify that say console access is authenticated locally, while ssh and telnet is authenticated through tacacs. This will allow you to always get in with a local account through the console, while it will force SSH and Telnet connections to authenticate through the AAA servers.
You can find this option in Device Manager > Security > AAA > Applications

  • Cisco MDS 9513/9509 LDAP/AD Auth via SSH & Fabric Manager

    Hello Folks,
I am trying to look for working config with LDAP auth over SSH. I know how to use them over TACACS+ & Radius. But due to other internal issue, currently I am trying to get the Cisco MDS to directly auth using LDAP/AD. Also, I see no option of LDAP/AD in FM(Fabric Manager), but just TACACS+, Radius, LocalFM and MDS. Do using MDS uses default auth(ie whatever AAA authentication is configured for ? or local DB on the switch).  Does the new DCNM supports LDAP/AD auth on the GUI ?
Larger goal is SSH(CLI) & FM(GUI) using the same LDAP/AD auth. I understand the snmp-server user issue. But once I have SSH working over LDAP/AD I can figure that out to..
Here's what I need to ensure when using LDAP/AD auth
    1) What is the exact config for this LDAP/AD auth
    2) How do I ensure that network-admin & network-opertor roles are assigned when certain AD Groups Logins in Like ADMIN-AD-GROUP , OPERATOR-AD-GROUP --> trying to login to the switch
    3) Also using SSL port for LDAP, do details are encrypted over the network.
    4) Do I need to use the PASSWORD in paintext when BINDING the BaseDN ?, can it be an encrypted password.
Appreciate any info on this. Thanks for your time.

As of DCNM 6.1 (aka - Fabric Manager Server) we support LDAP authentication adding to existing Radius, TACACS+, local and switch authentications.  You can upgrade from Fabric Manager 5.0 to DCNM 5.2 to DCNM 6.1 if you like to keep current performance, events, config data alive.  We do recommend fresh install as we don't know what state your server dabatabase might be in.  Including some links for you to help out with deployment and best practices (see release notes).

  • Enabling NPIV in CISCO MDS 9500 Series

                       Hello!!!
If i could get the response for my query.
I need to enable NPIV as we have VM's to be created and allocate SAN storage to them so my CISCO MDS needs to have NPIV enabled. Following queries linked with this:
    1. Can i enabled NPIV on single Fibre Channel Port or it gets enabled on the complete SAN Switch
    2. Does enabling NPIV impact any other SAN operation. Also my 2- sites are connected via ISL, so is it important to enable NPIV across all my sites or i can enable it only at 1 site where my VM hosts are located.
    3. Any reference document for NPIV and related zoning concept.
    Thanks in advance.

Will not impact any other SAN operation.  Non-disruptive.
"feature npiv" is local to the switch, not fabric wide.  Use this command on any switch you want multiple flogi's on a single interface.
    3. Any reference document for NPIV and related zoning concept.
    I suggest zoning by pwwn
