Cisco Network Control System software

As far as I know, the NCS is an appliance. But today some people told me that he has a copy of Cisco's Network Control System software. I am confused. If what he said is true, can I install the software on the Windows platforms like Win2003 or Win2008?
Thanks in advance.
Robert

  • Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller ?

Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller , for Rogue detection

    Hi Joao,
The WCS is used in conjuntion with the WLC (Wireless Lan Controller) for Rogue Detection. It is not a must for this function but more of an add-on :)
The Cisco WCS is an optional network component that works in conjunction with Cisco Aironet Lightweight Access Points, Cisco wireless LAN controllers and the Cisco Wireless Location Appliance.
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/index.html
    Overview of WCS
The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) is a Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution management tool that adds to the capabilities of the web user interface and command line interface (CLI), moving from individual controllers to a network of controllers. WCS includes the same configuration, performance monitoring, security, fault management, and accounting options used at the controller level and adds a graphical view of multiple controllers and managed access points.
WCS runs on Windows 2003 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4.0 and AS 4.0 servers. On both Windows and Linux, WCS can run as a normal application or as a service, which runs continuously and resumes running after a reboot.
The WCS user interface enables operators to control all permitted Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution configuration, monitoring, and control functions through Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. Operator permissions are defined by the administrator using the WCS user interface Administration menu, which enables the administrator to manage user accounts and schedule periodic maintenance tasks.
WCS simplifies controller configuration and monitoring while reducing data entry errors with the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Controller autodiscovery algorithm. WCS uses the industry-standard SNMP protocol to communicate with the controllers.

  • Prime network control system appliance (NCS)

    Hi,
i have a new cisco prime network control system appliance (NCS)
I completed the initial installation however post installation it performed a reboot and is now stuck at Init Level 3.
I have restarted the machine several time but the same result.

Umm a new appliance should have had the application pre-installed. Were you upgrading?
In either case, you'll probably need to open a TAC case. Even without Smartnet you should have at least 90-day warranty support

    Hi,
Yes you can block the specific client using MAC Address filtering option in WCS
This option is avialbe in Configure> Security >MAC Filtering
here you can create new template as per your requirement

  • WAP200E and Cisco Wireless Control System

    Hi.
I have a customer with a linux OS machine running Cisco Wireless Controll System.
He needs are to add a new wireless AP with the following features :
    - compatible with most laptops
    - exterior conditions "resistant" (sun, rain...)
    - reasonnable performance (the AP would be a a roof with people on the roof itself, max distance : 15 meters, no walls)
    AND
Which product would you recommend ?
I saw the WAP200E but I have no idea
    - if it is compatible with Cisco Wireless Control System
    - what antenna(s) to buy

    Hi Yves,
The WAP200E is not compatible with the WCS.
    1.  How high (in relation to the client) is the AP going to be installed?
    2.  How is the AP going to be installed?  Will it be hanging down?
    3.  Do you need Cisco CleanAir?

  • Wireless Control System Software

I could use some recommendations from the forums here. I have an 8-story apartment building in which the building management wants to install wireless to cover everyone and every floor. They also want to be able to manage all the APs from a centralized location. Obviously, a challenge since this is a new building and I can't do a site curvey yet.
But here's what I'm thinking from a theoretical standpoint. I'd probably want as many 1242AG access points as needed for actual coverage (anywhere from 2-20), since they handle lots of walls, etc. better than most other APs. I'd also want a 4402 WLAN Controller for handling anyone moving around, etc. Finally, I'd need the Wireless Control System software running on a server connected to the WLAN Controller.
First of two questions: does this all make sense to you, or am I over (or under-) thinking this?
Second question: I've found plenty of places where we can purchase licenses for the Wireless Control System software, but where is the software itself? Is it a free download with no licenses? Or does it come with the 4402 or something?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
You maybe don't need WCS - it's an nice extra, but you can just get a 4400-series controller and some APs and still configure security policies etc centrally and have the RF side of things auto-managed.
I'd get a 4400, and I'd get 1000-series APs (1010s if you just want built in antennaes or 1020s if you want to add external ones - 1010s should be find in most scenarios).
I've not used any 1200 series with the controllers yet, but heard reports of problems and the LWAPP firmware for these is pretty new - probably best to stick with the tried and tested ones for now.
Just leave yourself capacity on your 4400 controller for more APs in case you have some poor coverage areas, you can then just chuck up another AP to plug the hole, as it were...

  • Cisco Prime Network Control System Health Monitor Reflected XSS

    Apologies for the n00b question,
I am a security manager not a Cisco guru so please bear with me
Our Nessus scanner has picked this vulnerability up
Nessus states that there is no fix
Looking on Cisco's bug search the status is set to fixed,
    https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCud18375
I found this article on Cisco's website
Multiple Vulnerabilities in the WLSE Appliance - Cisco 2011-12-10
There are two vulnerabilities that exist in the CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE). The first is a cross site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that may allow an attacker to gain administrative privileges on the system. The second is a local privilege escalation vulnerability that can be used by an attacker who already has authenticated access to the command line interface to obtain access to the underlying operating system. Cisco has made free software available to address this vulnerability for affected customers. This advisory is available at http://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-20060419-wlse
Is WLSE part of WCS or am I grasping at straws here? Our techies don't seem to think so
We are currently running CISCO Wireless Controller System (WCS) running on Version 7.0.240.0 which is end of life
Is there an upgrade path for newer software?
Has anyone else encountered this issue
    http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/830316

    1. Its possible but some sort of lock/bug is preventing the removal of the controller. Is the controller reachable? Have you attempted to restart NCS to see if you are able to remove the controller afterwards?
    2. 8510 not supported on NCS, you must upgrade to Cisco Prime 1.3.x or higher.

  • Cisco Prime Network Control System (NCS) - Reports

    Hiya Supporters !
Just wonder how to make a report showing me which AP's in my setup that NEVER have any associated clients on, and/or over a given period of time, like 1 or months.
seems like I can get some reports under :
reports - report launch pad - clients
but i can not get clients count = 0 by "AP name"
    anyone know how ?
I use WLC's versions 7.0.116 and NCS 1.0.2.29 appliance on ESX

    mbilgrav,
There is a command on the NCS CLI that looks interesting:
    # ncs db reinitdb
wilab-ncs/admin# ncs db ?  reinitdb  Reinitialize NCS database by dropping all the tables
DISCLAIMER: I'm not a database guy, I've never used this command, and I have no idea what the ramifications are (I've searched and haven't found much). If you do decide to try it, snapshot/backup first and proceed at your own risk.
UPDATE: Curiousity got the best of me and I ran this command on my own lab NCS. I can confirm that this wipes out the NCS database completely and dumps you back to defaults. All user accounts except root are deleted, along with maps, devices and settings. The only thing that appears to be preserved is licensing. So... this could be useful if you wanted to re-attempt a WCS database migration: You could delete the offending AP entry within WCS first, then migrate your db over to NCS and presumably it would import without this AP record. That's assuming you came over from WCS in the first place, which I don't think you mentioned.
Other than that, you could try TAC. It sounds like a corrupt database entry or a bug to me, so maybe they can give you a sql query that will clear it out from the CLI or something.
If it were my system, I would snapshot/backup the 1.0 installation and then upgrade to 1.1. If you don't like the upgrade or if it breaks anything, you can restore your 1.0 snapshot.
Please let us know if/how you are able to resolve the issue.
    Justin

  • Can Wireless Control System Send Alarms As Traps to a trap receiver

Can the Cisco Wireless Control System be configured to send its alarms as SNMP traps to a specified trap receiver ? if so how is that capability configured ? is it thru Notification Receiver ?

Yes, it can. And yes through the Notification Reciever. Pity though, it can only send traps in regards to Guest Account Activity such as guest association and authentication.
Hopefully future versions of WCS will be more versatile in that regard.
    Cheers

    Hi Luis,
    Few questions :
    - is it the same on all machines you tested CNA on ?
    - is this an upgrade from a previous (and working) version ?
    - is it the English version of Windows, or a localized one ?

You are not alone in your opinion. The DMD is pretty clunky and useless. We gave up trying to use it. We code our apps with HTML and Javascript. You are correct in thinking that it seems Cisco pushed DMS out the door before it was really ready for market. That was my opinion also. I guess they had their reasons. I've seen the roadmap for the product so I am of the belief that in a few years they will have surpassed most of their competitors and worked out the issues.
5.0 released today. Upgrades will not be available until the end of the month. You can check out the new features on the Cisco website. Its a complete re-design of the GUI. We shall see just how much a step forward it is for the product set.

I have been looking over the realease notes for each product trying to draw some conclusion on which titles support or dont support certain products.
Has anyone used these and can give a quick answer for when you would use each and if there are any gotchas or limits to watch out for?
It looks like Prime is a paid for product but will any of the free solutions (CNA, CCP, CCA) work with all enterprise level products (2950, 2960, 3560, 3750, 4948, 4900 4500 switches and 1800, 1900, 2800, 2900, 3800, 3900 routers) or do you have to use Prime to get a product that will mange these devices?
    Thank you in advance.
