Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 - TFTP backup WLC not working
I don;t get the the background task "Controller Configuration Backup" working. I want to use default TFTP.
When i look in the logging i see 2 of three WLC's succesfully backuped there logging. Is their a log file where you can see what is happening?
With kind regards,
Martijn.
Hi Martijn:
If you go to the controller's GUI to Commands > Upload File and manually trigger the TFTP Configuration backup, does the process complete as expected? If not, whatever's causing that problem needs to be addressed first.
When someone wants to do a config backup from the command line, they give a series of commands
transfer download datatype config
transfer download mode tftp
transfer download serverip x.x.x.x
transfer download path ./
transfer download filename myBackup.cfg
transfer download start
The Controller Config Backup background task is just the SNMP version of "transfer download filename " and "transfer download start". If these other required settings aren't already there, the task isn't going to set them (the humans have to). If there's a problem with writing out the file on the server, or packet routing issues to get to the server, the task isn't going to see those things, it just knows that the answer to "transfer download start" wasn't "Okay!"
As for watching this processing in logs, go to Administration > Logging, and set the logging level to Trace for the modules SNMP and System, and click Save. Then kick off your backup attempt, allowing it to fail. When it does, return to Administration > Logging, and click the Download button to retrieve the logs.zip file. The activity should be in the ncs-x-x.log file.
If you don't have the new Update-1 patch for Prime Infrastructure 1.3.0.20 (filename PI_1.3.0.20_Update_1-12.tar.gz) installed, I'd suggest you get it. While it's not going to specifically address this issue, there are a lot of really good fixes in it.

Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 OVA - URL/FTP not working
The ESXi install of the theNCS OVA was successful. NCS seems to load and activate interfaces. The console session is working. Using compliant browsers; https://<ip address> does not work. When I stop "ncs" or halt the vm the web page responds shortly but then the connection is lost. I used "show ports" and tried https://<ip address>/8082 and get a login from the Cisco Prime Infrastructure Health Monitor URL. There is a prompt for the authorization key. How can I confirm the installation is complte and all services are up and running
Thanks
TerryAfter digging almost 1 month, I found the answer.
When you do provision from ESXi with ova file, you have to create "Thick Provision" otherwise, you wiil have same problem such as "some services are not up"
In my case, I am running ESXi on the top of VM WorkStation since I don't have any ESXi server. When I added 250GB into the WorkStation and did provision with "Thick" it works !!!
Since my testing envrionment is little complicated (ESXi with VM WorkStation), I added first 250GB HDD into ESXi, and tried. It didn't work. So I added 250GB into VM WorkStation and did provision through Workstation, it worked (If you don't understand this statements, do not worry. If you have ESXi server, you don't need to worry about)
As far as cisco ova is concerned, when I talked to one of my my friend who was working for new ACS (Virtual Appliance) he had same issue. He also solved with "Thick Provision"
FYI, even if when I installed with "Thin Provision", PI 1.2 used only 10GB out of 200GB, so I did not think that I should use "Think Provision". But definitely not. -
Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 SNMP Traps are not converted into Alarms
Hi everybody,
I just configured SNMP Traps on a Cisco Catalyst 3750-x to send to our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 Appliance.
Now I forced the Switch to send some traps (Power off a Power Supply, Interface errdisable). The only events I see in Alarms & Events on PI is the same information message everytime:
Configuration management event has been recorded in ccmHistoryEventTable.
I think the forced traps should be converted into alarms? Why can't I see them?
Thanks,
MarcOk, I started debugging as you said. I get the following output:
Mar 13 09:28:13.711: SNMP: V2 Trap, reqid 11689, errstat 0, erridx 0
sysUpTime.0 = 198609846
snmpTrapOID.0 = ciscoSyslogMIB.2.0.1
clogHistoryEntry.2.1688 = PM
clogHistoryEntry.3.1688 = 5
clogHistoryEntry.4.1688 = ERR_RECOVER
clogHistoryEntry.5.1688 = Attempting to recover from bpduguard err-disable state on Gi1/0/13
clogHistoryEntry.6.1688 = 198609844
Mar 13 09:28:13.737: SNMP: Queuing packet to xx.xx.xx.xx
Looks like the Switch is sending SNMP Traps from the ciscoSyslogMIB. Is this why PI can't show the Traps and convert it into a alarm?
After this test I configured logging (syslog) to the PI. Now the errors are showed but still not converted into alarms. I just want to be notified by email when such errors occurs.
Thanks,
Marc -
Consultations on Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2
I recently installed Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2 and I have 2 questions regarding configuration:
1. What configurations should run for vulnerability when some event occurs on a switch an alarm is lifted in the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2?
2. Is there any way to put a device into maintenance mode in the web interface of Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2, so that can not be spoiled reports regarding equipment availability during the execution of maintenance?1. If you configure PI as an SNMP and syslog server for your devices and have enabled logging traps etc., PI's alarm browser will show the alarms. If you want them to be sent to you via email, you can do that under the Admin menu for setting up your Mail server and clicking the link to "Configure email notification for individual alarm categories." (see below - open in new tab to zoom). It's not completely customizable but what you see there is the current product capabilities in that regard.
2. No, this is not currently an available feature in PI 2.2. -
Cannot add WLC 5508 7.2.111.3 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0
Though the Cisco Prime Infrastructure Compatibility Matrix list out that 7.2.111.3 is supported for PI 2.0
I am not able to add the controller to the PI 2.0.
The Reachability Status always shown "Unknow" and SNMP Status always shown "No response for SNMP Get".
There is no firewall between the WLC and PI.
And ping test shows it is reachable.
If I try to add controller by non-management port (I know it is not work but I want to try the reachability), the Reachability Status shown "Reachable" but the SNMP Status always shown error.
And if I use some SNMP testing software to test the SNMP port. SNMP can be quoted.
I have try to lower down the "Maximum VarBinds per Get PDU" but no luck.
Any thing I can do to troubleshoot the problem?Yes, I follow the procedure but it does not work.
Another update:
I add another WLC with version 7.0.98.0. It is fine.
And I setup another new PI 2.0 and new temporary WLC5508 with 7.2.111.3 to test. It work fine also......
So, I am wondering the existing 7.2 WLC have problem in responsing the SNMP Get. But I dont have any idea to test....
Do anyone have idea to test the snmp connection between PI and WLC? -
WLC 2504 in Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2
Trying to add Cisco 2504 Wireless Controller, Software Version 7.3.101.0, to Cisco Prime Infrastructure
1.2 (1.2.0.103), License Evaluation, with no success.
When using Discovery, Discovery Job show Credential Errors: "Error occured due to invalid SNMP credential"
When Add Device from Device Work Center I get:
Reachability is "Unknown", Device Type is empty, Collection Status is "Managed with Warnings", with message "SNMP Failure: No Response for SNMP Get request.", Collection Time is empty.
I've tried with both snmp v2 and v3.
I've tried to lower "Maximum VarBinds per Get PDU" to 10 or 20, cause I've read similar problem in NCS.I solved the same problem 5min ago.!
select the device and press syc ..that helped me ... -

Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 and Cisco ASA
Hello,
We've recently installed trial version of Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 Express. We hoped that it already supports Cisco ASA 55xx series (especially 5505, we have pretty amount of them). But we had some problems with PI and asa durind the exploitation process.
First, I've added ASA to PI, and Inventory Collection Status is Completed, but I can't see CPU and RAM utilization graphs. Inventory.logs are non-informative.
Also, config backup is success, but when I try to watch the backuped configuration at Configuration Archive PI says "Failed to fetch raw configuration". And so on.
ASA version is 5505, image is 9.1(2).
So, I have a question: is it possible to manage ASAs with PI 2.0?
UPD: I've just tried to upgrade asa to 9.1(4), and behavior of the equipment is quite the same. Seems we shall wait for 9.2 to be released.Have you downloaded and applied the latest Device Pack updates?
PI enhanced ASA support after the initial 2.0 release and the Device Packs incorporate that change.
The README file for Device Packs explains how to install them. (A bug currently does not allow the direct download in PI so you need to follow the method for installation from local storage after you manually download. Here is a link to the download location. -
Cisco Prime Infrastructure patch 2.1.1 - HA issue
Hello,
I have a problem with the Cisco Prime Infrastructure patched to version 2.1.1. I did exactly what Installation Guidelines say:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/net_mgmt/prime/infrastructure/2-1-1/release/notes/cpi_rn.html
– Install the Prime Infrastructure 2.1.1 patch by using the Administration > Software Updates page on the primary server.
– Restart the primary server.
– Verify that the patch installation is complete. If you find the installation complete, decommission and reinstall the secondary server and add it back to the primary server.
I reinstalled HA server and I'm trying to add it to HA but I get "Failed to authenticate - Primary(xx.xx.xx.xx) and Secondary(xx.xx.xx.xy) PI version does not match"
Can you help me with that? What I'm doing wrong? or maybe this patch is not prepared to work in HA mode?
RegardsSymptom:
The installation instructions of PI 2.1.1 patch in a High Availability environment are not accurate and following these steps will result in the inability to re-pair the Primary and Secondary servers.
Conditions:
If the instructions are followed, then when the user attempts to re-pair the servers, an error will be encountered:
"High Availability Registration Failed - Failed to authenticate - Primary (x.x.x.1) and Secondary (x.x.x.2) PI version does not match".
Instead, the following steps have proved to work correctly:
1. Upload and install patch on primary.
2. Upload and install patch on secondary.
3. Stop NCS services on secondary
4. Stop NCS services on primary
5. Start services on secondary
6. Start services on primary
7. Re-pair HA servers from primary
Workaround:
Workaround 1:
On the secondary, go under root and issue:
# cd /opt/CSCOlumos/bin/
# ./hamode.sh primary
Answer 'yes' when prompted.
Go to admin user and execute
# ncs stop
After the services are stopped:
# ncs start
When the services are back up, login to the secondary GUI as you would login to a primary server
Go under Administration > Software update, upload the patch and install it.
Go to admin user and execute
# ncs stop
After the services are stopped:
# ncs start
When the services are up, go under root and issue:
# cd /opt/CSCOlumos/bin/
# ./hamode.sh secondary
Answer 'yes' when prompted.
Go to admin user and execute
# ncs stop
After the services are stopped:
# ncs start
After the message that services started successfully on the secondary, initiate a new High Availability configuration from the primary. Now the synchronization between the two servers should succeed.
Workaround 2:
Redeploy or reinstall the Primary server, restore the backup which was taken prior to applying the patch, reconfigure the High Availability and continue with the steps described in the Conditions section.

Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 to 2.1
I have a Cisco Prime Infrastructure version 1.3 virtual appliance and we have a new Prime Infrastructure version 2.1 virtual appliance set up. I would like to get the wireless information put into the new server. This includes the WLC and APs and then the campus maps and the location of each AP on the map Im not sure if the heat mapping is a feature of Prime or if I have to set that up too. But I would like the heat maps.
What would be the easiest way todo this? Are you logged in with a cisco.com (CCO ) userid? I just checked it and it works fine for me.

Cisco Prime Infrastructure and no new events / alarms since update to 2.2.1
Hello,
I have upgraded our Cisco Prime Infrastructure from version 2.1 to 2.2.1 (with a backup and restore). We have round about 700 APs and three 5208 Controller. So far everything seems to work really fine. The only problem is that there are no new alarms/events under "Monitor", "Alarms and Events".
The last entries (events and alarms) are dated before the upgrade. Other informations (like client counts for example) are correct.
Is there a known bug related to my problem? Can anybody help?
ThanksI have done some research:
I see the following problems in the log-package (downloaded from Prime):

I think that there is a problem with a too small tablespace. But I can´t fix that. Anybody? ;) -
WCS and LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 Upgrade
Hello,
Our customer is currently having WCS for 500 devices and LMS 3.2 for 1500 devices. We are planning to upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3.
I want to check is the upgrade procedure that we have planned is ok or we have missed something.
Phase 1: WCS to CPI 1.3 upgrade
1. Check that WCS is at 7.0.230.0 version
2. Export WCS database
3. Install NCS 1.1.1.24 software
4. Contact cisco to obtain trial license for NCS software (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9 license).
5. Migrate WCS license and import it in NCS software
6. Migrate WCS data to NCS software using ncs migrate command
7. Patch NCS software
8. Inline upgrade to CPI 1.3 software
9. Install proper licenses on CPI 1.3 (WCS and LMS device count)
My concern in this first phase is should I use NCS large image since our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 software should manage 2000 devices at the end.
Or is it better not to perform inline upgrade and insted go with exporting data from NCS and then importing them to CPI 1.3 that is going to be installed separately?
Phase 2: LMS 3.2 to CPI upgrade
1. Export LMS 3.2 database
2. Install LMS 4.2 software
3. Install license to LMS 4.2
4. Restore data from LMS 3.2 to LMS 4.2
5. Direct upgrade from LMS 4.2 to 4.2.2
6. Export the device list with credentials from LMS 4.2.2 and import it as a Bulk Import in CPI 1.3
At the end we will have CPI 1.3 and LMS 4.2.2 software running.
Is it possible to directly upgrade from LMS 4.2 to LMS 4.2.4 and then import data to CPI 1.3 or we need to go with 4.2.2 version?
Regards,
JelenaHello Marvin,
We have restored LMS 3.2 SP 1 database on LMs 4.2 and we have got some error messages during restore. Please see our restore output:

Are this errors going to affect our LMS 4.2 operations?
Then we have upgraded to LMS 4.2.2 and exported data and credentiales for PI import.
On PI 1.3 we have installed WCS 500 devices upgrade license and LMS 1500 upgrade license and now we are having 2000 devices lifecycle license. We have successfully restored WCS data in PI and we have imported LMS devices as bulk import. What is strange is that we have this message in prime regarding licensing:
On LMS 3.2 our customer had saved unlimited number of configuration versioning. After upgrading to LMS 4.2 we can only see last 3 configurations regardless of unlimided number of configurations in previous LMS, so my question is where can we find older configurations in LMS 4.2?
We are planning to turn unlimited versioning on CPI 1.3 now, so our customer will again have feature that they need. Do you have some experiance regarding disk space when all device configurations are stored forever?
Thank you for your help.

Hi All,
Im getting a bit confused about the whole upgrade migration process for the following config to Cisco Prime Infrastructure:
LMS - Version 4.1 , 500 devices. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
NCS – version 1.1 , 50 devices Red Hat Linux ( 64 Bit) (Installation software - NCS-VA-1.0.1.4-small.ova)
I want to be able to backup databases and migrate licensing from LMS and NCS to one platform. Does anyone have experience of this and could possible guide me thorugh this process. LMS has SAS and NCS has SAU.
Help will be very much appreciated!!It's a couple of steps but can be done. You may want to reconsider getting off of LMS since the latest Prime Infrastructure (PI 1.2) does not have full feature compatibility with the latest LMS (4.2.3). Have a look here for the comparison.
If you still want to do it:
1. Upgrade your NCS to PI 1.2 (instructions). If you're going with a total of 550 devices on a combined license you should use the medium ova file to get the correct server resource allocation. You will need to get the new license from the TAC or via the licensing portal. I'm not sure if you can get the PI license for your LMS upgrade directly via the portal but you do have the entitlement for LMS 4.2 and PI 1.2 (combined licenses not to exceed the original LMS number) if your SAS is current. You may need to contact the TAC and ask for the licensing team.
2. Upgrade your LMS to 4.2 and patch it to 4.2.2 (instructions). Once you've done that, there is a simple menu command to export your device credentials to Prime (Admin, System, Export Data to PI in LMS and then Operation, Device Work Center, Bulk Import in PI - instruction on Page 18 here). Do that and then in the new PI installation import the devices.
Verify everything is working and you can decommission the LMS server. -
Prime Infrastructure 2.0 tftp service
Hi
I'm having problems with upgrading software images on swithces when using tftp for image transfer. (SCP is not availiable in current image)
The job reports as failed in "Jobs Dashboard"

..and when looking into the logfile
/opt/CSCOlumos/conf/ifm/swim/jobs/X.X.X.X_tftp_telnet.log
it contains this output:

(I removed a bunch of "!" in the output )
I guess that the tftp server on the PI server shuts down or closes the connection after a period of time
Is there a way to configure the tftp server settings on the Prime Infrastructure server or keep the tftp service always running?

Roger SaugestadWe have the same problems with upgrading IOSes via TFTP.
Other TFTP tasks, like gathering vlan.dat files in Configuration Archive Job, is also failed.
Netstat -an command in root shell shows that java process listening 69 udp.

Wireshark shows that Prime tried to do "copy flash:vlan.dat tftp:" but server says "%Error opening tftp://address/xxxx.cfg"
Strange thing that in directory /localdisk/tftp I see some collected vlan.dat files (about 10, regardless that we have >1000 switches). But I cannot copy them to device manually..
Summary, TFTP service is started but not works correctly.
