Server and Client Requirements
For information on server and client requirements for the system and browser, see Chapter 2 of Installing and Migrating to Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution 4.2 at:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.2/install/guide/
install.html
To summarize the options it describes, you can run the LMS product on any number of platforms - a dedicated Cisco hardware appliance, a physical server of your own with Windows or Solaris OS, a VMware server with a Windows server OS guest, or a "soft appliance". The soft appliance is package built with the underlying guest OS (a customized RHEL distribution with Cisco's Application Development Environment OS (ADE-OS)) built-in.
Once you have installed LMS 4.2, you should patch - first to 4.2.2 and then to the current 4,2,3. then run the software update feature to bring all package components up to date.
Regarding licensing, there is a Cisco Prime Infrastructure Ordering and Licensing Guide here.
When you order the licenses for PI 1.2 (new customer), you order the base product and then Lifecycle licenses (required for either PI 1.2 Lifecycle and LMS installations - which option is a customer choice) and, optionally, Compliance and Assurance licenses. An upgrade order for an existing LMS customer will include the base PI 1.2 with Lifecycle licenses as well as LMS in a single SKU as noted in tables 4 and 5 of the Ordering Guide.

  • Cisco Prime infrastructure 2.0 cpu requirement

    Hi,
i'm reading the doc at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/docs/net_mgmt/prime/infrastructure/2.0/quickstart/guide/cpi_qsg.html#wp46865
and I'm searching for the CPU requirement for a Standard installation. From table 2 in this document, I will need 16 virtual CPUS but there is no frequency mentioned. Does someone know what is the minimum CPU frequency to run PI 2.0 correctly?
    Thanks
    Theo

The number of vCPU's depends on your ESXi host, either your limited to 8 or you will have 16, 32, etc.  The vCPU amount is defined on the VM or PI2.0 and you can change it after the VM has been installed.  PI 2.0 has an Express (4 vCPU), Standard and Pro which require 16 vCPU.  There is a custome express that uses the Express ova (4 vCPU), but you need to increase that to 8 vCPU.  Hope that helps.
    Thanks,

I found a job (SAM_Poller_22_15_GETVPNPoller_1878262177) in cisco prime infrastructure 2.1 (Administration -> Job Dashboard -> System-defined), which has been running for about 50 days. Is this normal? How can I stop it? Thanks for any help..

Not normal, seems to be stuck. Try to stop (ncs stop) and start (ncs start) the system processes, which should stop this job.
If it happens again, i would recommend to open a TAC case for further investigation.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 on Windows Server/Hyper-V

    Hi Everyone,
In Entriprise environment while designing a BYOD solution we need to integrate ISE3315 with CPI 1.2. I know that Cisco ISE software either runs on 3315 platform or other option is virtual appliance (which is VMware based). Now problem is that we have Hyper-V environment as standard so I need to go with ISE-3315. Here my concern is to I install CPI 1.2 on Hyper-V, or on a Windows Server (2008 or 2012) based machine. Is that doable?
Any help, suggessions would be warmly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Azhar...

Cisco Prime LMS will slowly be phased out in favor of Cisco Prime Infrastructure and hence there are no new mainline releases are planned to provide support to new Hardware or virtualization support.
However, Prime LMS do support Hyper V Virtualization (As an installable in Windows 2008). Please note that Virtualization technologies like, VMWare and Hyper V virtualization systems are not supported in LMS 5000, and LMS 10000 Devices license, in Windows. VMWare Systems are supported in LMS 5000, and LMS 10000 Devices license in Soft Appliance. • Is cisco prime infrastructure support / can be run as syslog server?

    Dear All,
is cisco prime infrastructure support / can be run as syslog server?
    and,
where i can see network topology diagram, using cisco prime infrastructure?
    many thanks,
    Jerri

Hello. Cisco Prime LMS will be replaced by Cisco Prime Infrastructure in the near future.
In the current release of Cisco Prime Infrastructure you can't use topology diagrams. This feature is in roadmap.
About syslog, you can send syslogs to Cisco Prime Infrastructure, but I don't recommend using it as syslog server. Please see this link for more information https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2179520

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure Operating System

I need some help here. I know that Prime Infrasturcture virtual appliance deployments are ESX and ESXi, but do I need to have Red Hat Linux Enterprise Server 5.4 64-bit also? This is getting confusing.

Like Seth said it's all included in the ova distributions. Both PI and Prime LMS ova's bundle Cisco's "ADE-OS" Application Development Environment Operating System - a RHEL build.
PI doesn't let you access the root shell but here's exactly what's included in LMS, for example:

  • WCS and LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 Upgrade

    Hello,
Our customer is currently having WCS for 500 devices and LMS 3.2 for 1500 devices. We are planning to upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3.
I want to check is the upgrade procedure that we have planned is ok or we have missed something.
Phase 1: WCS to CPI 1.3 upgrade
    1. Check that WCS is at 7.0.230.0  version
    2. Export WCS database
    3. Install NCS 1.1.1.24 software
    4. Contact cisco to obtain trial license for NCS software (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9 license).
    5. Migrate WCS license and import it in NCS software
    6. Migrate WCS data to NCS software using ncs migrate command
    7. Patch NCS software
    8. Inline upgrade to CPI 1.3 software
    9. Install proper licenses on CPI 1.3 (WCS and LMS device count)
My concern in this first phase is should I use NCS large image since our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 software should manage 2000 devices at the end.
Or is it better not to perform inline upgrade and insted go with exporting data from NCS and then importing them to CPI 1.3 that is going to be installed separately?
Phase 2: LMS 3.2 to CPI upgrade
    1. Export LMS 3.2 database
    2. Install LMS 4.2 software
    3. Install license to LMS 4.2
    4. Restore data from LMS 3.2 to LMS 4.2
    5. Direct upgrade from LMS 4.2 to 4.2.2
    6. Export the device list with credentials from LMS 4.2.2  and import it as a Bulk Import in CPI 1.3
At the end we will have CPI 1.3 and LMS 4.2.2 software running.
Is it possible to directly upgrade from LMS 4.2 to LMS 4.2.4 and then import data to CPI 1.3 or we need to go with 4.2.2 version?
    Regards,
    Jelena

Are this errors going to affect our LMS 4.2 operations?
Then we have upgraded to LMS 4.2.2 and exported data and credentiales for PI import.
On PI 1.3 we have installed WCS 500 devices upgrade license and LMS 1500 upgrade license and now we are having 2000 devices lifecycle license. We have successfully restored WCS data in PI and we have imported LMS devices as bulk import. What is strange is that we have this message in prime regarding licensing:
On LMS 3.2 our customer had saved unlimited number of configuration versioning. After upgrading to LMS 4.2 we can only see last 3 configurations regardless of unlimided number of configurations in previous LMS, so my question is where can we find older configurations in LMS 4.2?
We are planning to turn unlimited versioning on CPI 1.3 now, so our customer will again have feature that they need. Do you have some experiance regarding disk space when all device configurations are stored forever?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Jeremy,
SNMP traps are shown in the events and alerts section of PI.
SNMP config looks fine. Can  you run the SNMP debug (debug snmp packets ) .check the logs and see if the device is actually sending the TRAPS to the PI server.
    Thanks-
    Afroz

  • Ciscoworks LMS 3.0 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2

In order to complete the upgrade the LMS 3.x runs over a physical server that ends with the upgrade(server its gona be retired), the think is that the Cisco Prime comes with an UCS and its gona run over a VM. The question here is the "Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.1 - Maj Upg from LMS 2.x/3.x" media could be runs as clean install, I mean with no LMS 3.x intalled  before? an the "Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 1.5K Device Maj Upg Lic" could be registered with no license installed of LMS 3.x?

There are a couple of things to distinguish:
    1. The product SKU you need to order to migrate from LMS 3 to LMS 4.2.
    2. The license file that is installed on that new LMS server.
#1 is based on Cisco agreeing, usually through the partner or reseller you are working with, that you are entitled to order the upgrade SKU (vs. buy a complete new product). The upgrade SKUs are all listed in the ordering guide here.
L-PI12-1.5K-UP (note - NOT the 1.1 product description you noted in the original post) would be the SKU for a major upgrade from LMS 2.x/3.x to the current Prime Infrastructure 1.2 release at the 1500 device license level. That upgrade includes licenses for both PI 1.2 and Prime LMS 4.2. You may choose which to install - most LMS customers stick with LMS for now as PI 1.2 does not yet have full feature parity. Your managed devices should not exceed 1500 combined (in this case) but that combined number is not enforced technically by the product's license daemon.
Once you have purchased the product and have the media you can install it on any host that meets the installation prerequisites as far as OS, memory, disk etc. A clean installation of LMS does not check for or require a previous installation as far as technical checks.
#2 - Once you have installed the new LMS server (and optionally a step near the end of installation, you need to add in the license file (*.lic file). That is obtained through the Cisco licensing portal (or via the TAC if you prefer) using the Product Activation Key (PAK) received with your product.

  • UPS monitoring support with Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2

    Dear Members,
    Good day,
I am having a project implemented wherein i have the UPS power redudancy solution for our network devices.
Now can anyone gide that is it possible for below :-
UPS units installed with SNMP cards be monitored via Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 as our monitoring & management solution is Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 ?
    if yes
Can you guide if following action would be possible to export the below logs from UPS unit to our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2
       a) UPS fault status information
       b) UPS operational status(input power available Y/N)
       c) Battery fault status
       d) Battery charging current
       e) Battery charge level
       f) Output current
Conclusion is we need to confirm that would it be posible to achieve remote monitoring of these UPS units via our CPI 1.2
Thanks in Advance for your support & replies to this query.
    Regards,
    Muzammil N.

Prime Infrastructure 1.2 can manage non-Cisco devices in a limited fashion via SNMP query and trap processing. It cannot import logs and does not have a generic syslog server,
So if your devices have snmp read only support and can generate SNMP traps for the above you can add them to PI. Follow the manual add device procedure here.

NetFlow export is also supported on other Cisco switches when using a NetFlow Feature Card (NFFC) or NFFC II and the Route Switch Module (RSM), or Route Switch Feature Card (RSFC). However, check whether version 5 is supported, as most switches export version 7 by default.
You can check the below steps to diagnose the issue::
To verify that NetFlow is exported from a device to PI, follow the steps below:
    1)    Browse to Administration > Data Sources page. Check the value in column ‘Last Active Time’  for the ‘Device Data Sources’ table. If the table is empty or  the value does not represent recent time, then
it is possible that the device is not exporting NetFlow or PI Assurance license is not applied / expired.
    2)    Login to PI console ( via SSH) as root user and run the command:
                    netstat –an | grep 9991 – Output of this should be like :  udp        0      0 :::9991         :::*
Check the firewall settings on PI server using the command: firewall -L
    1)    Check the configuration on an IOS / IOS –XE device. Run the commands
    a)    sh running-config | inc destination
    1)    This should list the IP address of the PI SERVER ( along with other outputs if any)
    b)    sh running-config | inc 9991
    1)    This should list at least one entry.
    c)    If the above are fine, then verify that the flow monitor, flow exporter and the flow records are correctly configured on the device.
Refer to the URLs below to configure NetFlow export.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 - Remote FTPrepository Sizing Guide

Can anyone provide a link to a sizing guide for remote FTP repository for backing up Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 to a remote FTP server?

A personal observation; In PI 1.1, with the small ova we were running around 300 AP's and I had noticable slowness and issues.  At that time, TAC mentioned that I should go with the medium as it was a known problem  Now, despite being on 1.2 and alot of the issues resolved (and now new ones), if faced with the need to start over and I could spare the hardware, I would still go with the medium.   My personal opinion is that Cisco VM's require way to much.  On the other hand, knowing that it's relying on a built in Oracle DB, which from my experience with virtual servers, databases in VM = bad, it's understandable.  Not everyone agrees with this point from vm gurus to db geniuses, and I'm not a professional vm guy, just play one on tv, but personally i shove as much hardware as I can afford from my host at it if it's a db in a vm.  This comes from being in an enterprise with multiple oracle db's in multiple vm environments.  My 2cents.

  • LMS 4.1 (Windows) & NCS 1.1 (VM) Upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2

    Hi All,
Im getting a bit confused about the whole upgrade migration process for the following config to Cisco Prime Infrastructure:
    LMS - Version 4.1 , 500 devices. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
    NCS – version 1.1 , 50 devices  Red Hat Linux ( 64 Bit)  (Installation software - NCS-VA-1.0.1.4-small.ova)
I want to be able to backup databases and migrate licensing from LMS and NCS to one platform. Does anyone have experience of this and could possible guide me thorugh this process. LMS has SAS and NCS has SAU.
Help will be very much appreciated!!

It's a couple of steps but can be done. You may want to reconsider getting off of LMS since the latest Prime Infrastructure (PI 1.2) does not have full feature compatibility with the latest LMS (4.2.3). Have a look here for the comparison.
If you still want to do it:
    1. Upgrade your NCS to PI 1.2 (instructions). If you're going with a total of 550 devices on a combined license you should use the medium ova file to get the correct server resource allocation. You will need to get the new license from the TAC or via the licensing portal. I'm not sure if you can get the PI license for your LMS upgrade directly via the portal but you do have the entitlement for LMS 4.2 and PI 1.2 (combined licenses not to exceed the original LMS number) if your SAS is current. You may need to contact the TAC and ask for the licensing team.
    2. Upgrade your LMS to 4.2 and patch it to 4.2.2 (instructions). Once you've done that, there is a simple menu command to export your device credentials to Prime (Admin, System, Export Data to PI in LMS and then Operation, Device Work Center, Bulk Import in PI - instruction on Page 18 here). Do that and then in the new PI installation import the devices.
Verify everything is working and you can decommission the LMS server.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 - TFTP backup WLC not working

I don;t get the the background task "Controller Configuration Backup" working. I want to use default TFTP.
When i look in the logging i see 2 of three WLC's succesfully backuped there logging. Is their a log file where you can see what is happening?
    With kind regards,
    Martijn.

    Hi Martijn:
If you go to the controller's GUI to Commands > Upload File and manually trigger the TFTP Configuration backup, does the process complete as expected?  If not, whatever's causing that problem needs to be addressed first.
When someone wants to do a config backup from the command line, they give a series of commands
    transfer download datatype config
    transfer download mode tftp
    transfer download serverip x.x.x.x
    transfer download path ./
    transfer download filename myBackup.cfg
    transfer download start
The Controller Config Backup background task is just the SNMP version of "transfer download filename " and "transfer download start".  If these other required settings aren't already there, the task isn't going to set them (the humans have to).  If there's a problem with writing out the file on the server, or packet routing issues to get to the server, the task isn't going to see those things, it just knows that the answer to "transfer download start" wasn't "Okay!"
As for watching this processing in logs, go to Administration > Logging, and set the logging level to Trace for the modules SNMP and System, and click Save.  Then kick off your backup attempt, allowing it to fail.  When it does, return to Administration > Logging, and click the Download button to retrieve the logs.zip file.  The activity should be in the ncs-x-x.log file.
If you don't have the new Update-1 patch for Prime Infrastructure 1.3.0.20 (filename PI_1.3.0.20_Update_1-12.tar.gz) installed, I'd suggest you get it.  While it's not going to specifically address this issue, there are a lot of really good fixes in it.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure and VLAN fetch

I have about a dozen systems which are showing up under the Archive Failed Devices section of Device Work Center -> Configuration Archives.  The reason is Fetch VLAN configuration - Command failed.  All of the affected devices have something in common in that they are all managed by hitting a publicly routable IP address outside of the network on which the NCS server lives (NCS IP is 172.19.40.51).  To the devices, NCS looks like it is coming from an publicly routable IP address (because it is NAT'd by the firewall).  I suspected that the issue was that NCS was trying to TFTP the VLAN.dat file to the NCS server but that it was trying to send it to 172.19.40.51 instead of the NAT address.  I turned on debugs on one of the affected devices and sure enough I see that the device is trying to TFTP something to 172.19.40.51.  Of course that will never work.  I can find no way within the Admin UI of Cisco Prime to change this behavior such that NCS will try to collect the VLAN.dat file in some other way or use the NAT'd IP address for the copy attempt.
Is there a way to get it to use something other than TFTP?  Is there some way to turn this off entirely so that it doesn't show up in the Archive Failed Devices section?  Prime seems to be able to parse the VLANs by way of the configuration file (since we use transparent mode throughout) so it seems like an extra step I don't need.

    Marvin,
This is where everything goes off the rails for me when it comes to understanding Prime Infrastruction, Prime LMS and everything that you're talking about.  Refer to this link:  http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/cloud-systems-management/prime-lan-management-solution/data_sheet_c78-697479.html
    How should I interpret this?:
"Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.1 bundles campus switch, branch, core routing, and wireless LAN management into a single, easy-to-order solution that enables businesses and enterprises unparalleled operational efficiencies and investment protection. The bundle consists of:
    ● Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution, which delivers simplified management of Cisco® Borderless Networks and reduces operations costs by aligning network management functionality the way network operators do their jobs
    ● Cisco Prime Network Control System, which provides complete wireless LAN management with converged user and access management, and integrated lifecycle management of branch routers
For more information about Cisco Prime Infrastructure, please visit http://www.cisco.com/go/primeinfrastructure."
Am I wrong to assume that the first bullet point, which states "Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution" is referring to Prime LMS 4.2?
    Thanks,
    Steven
