Cisco RV180 and Wake-On-Lan (WOL)

Hello,
I got a RV180 (firmware version: 1.0.1.9) and I am bit surprised by the lack of the configuration flexibility...
I am trying to use Wake-On-Lan (from internet) to wake up a machine in my home (trying to be green and not keep the machine on all the time, just when i need it).
The configuration is quite simple:
Work machine ----> (internet) ----> (WAN) RV180 (LAN) ----> Home Machine (off, linux, wol enabled for UNICAST and Magic Packet - flags "ug")
What i tried so far:
1. All the following RV180 settings together:
   a. Used Port Forwarding from the WAN IP to the Home Machine IP (UDP port 7 and 9)
       - i had no choice but to put the Home Machine's IP address, since i cannot put the BROADCAST address (xxx.xxx.xxx.255) <- forbidden in the configuration page (i wonder if a new version of firmware allows this)
   b. Used Static DHCP to pair the Home Machine's IP to it's MAC address
   c. Used IP/MAC binding for the Home Machine
2. All the following RV180 settings together:
   a. Created a PPTP VPN connection
   b. Connected from the Work machine (obtained a LAN IP, can ping the Home Machine if it is on)
   c. Tried to send a broadcast message to LAN (no success !)
3. I also tried to activate the MULTICAST and BROADCAST WOL flags on the Home Machine but it seems that it receives some messages and the machine wakes up in a very short amount of time after i shut it down (it seems that RV180 sends some messages over LAN by itself).
In all the 3 possibilites above i was not successful in using WOL....
Is there any possibility to use WOL from internet in this configuration ?
Are there new options that will allow WOL from internet in the latest firmware ?
Any advice is appreciated

I was researching about your concern and found several people with the same inquiry where they were told WoL is not a supported feature on these Small Business Routers and that I think is a correct assumption, however I found the below threat where someone with a similar case scenario as yours were able to make it work, it's on a different RV router but I thought I may be interesting for you to check;

C445 and wake on lan

Is it possible to use wake on lan with a C445 all in one PC? Normally this is enabled in the Bios but this unit doesn't seem to use a bios.

Welcome to the Forums.
The Ideacentre C445 does use a BIOS and you can access it by pressing F1 on power up.
It's possible to use the Wake-On-LAN (WOL) feature of this unit as long as it meets the following requirements:
1. WOL must be enabled in the BIOS (this model has one)
- Link to picture
2. WOL must enabled in the LAN card
- I'm unable to verify this as there's no available C445 here in the lab.

MSI 645 Ultra and "Wake On LAN" ???

This question is aimed at the following people :
- Someone who owns a MSI 645-Ultra motherboard, and who has some experience about it's "Wake On LAN" capabilities,
or,
- Someone at MSI who knows the detailed specifications of this motherboard (related to its "Wake On LAN" capabilities).
I own a "MSI 645 Ultra" motherboard for some time now (more than a year). It's based on SIS 645 chipset.
Currently, I'm trying to make the computer boot on demand, through the LAN.
So, I have an appropriate network card : its based on Admtek AN983, it supports "Wake On LAN" (WOL), and a WOL cable was included.
About the MSI 645 Ultra motherboard, I looked at the documentation, and, surprisingly, I didn't find any mention of the WOL feature.
Too sad, this "modern" motherboard doesn't support WOL feature ??
The doc says there is support for WOR (Wake on modem Ring), and there is a WOR connector. But no WOL connector.
So, what's the status of this motherboard, regarding WOL support ??
- Is it internally supported, without the need of a WOL connection, directly through PCI and PME signaling ?
- Can I use the motherboard WOR input connector, and plug the network card's WOL into it ?
- Is all of this non sense ??

Here I reply to myself : I think this will be useful to other people, whatever the motherboard model.
So, I just SUCCESSFULLY have been able to wake up my PC from the LAN
Here are my conclusions :
1- There's nothing in the motherboard documentation that explicitly indicates that it's supported. But it is !
2 - I didn't need to connect the LAN card to the motherboard (didn't need any WOL connection)
3 - I have a patched Windows XP. But its standard drivers for my network card weren't enough. I had to install the updated drivers from the manufacturer (admtek).
4 - With these drivers, I could then access, from Windows devices setup tool, to the network adapter APM properties, and I could "Allow Device to Bring Computer Out of Standby".
5. Inside the BIOS, a few things to setup :
Power Management Features
-> IPCA Function : Enabled
-> Power Management / APM : Enabled
-> Set Wake Up Events ... Wake Up On PME# : Enabled
Actually, this means that there is no explicit need for a "Wake On LAN" configuration. It all goes through PME# (i.e. direct PCI) wakeup events.
6. Then it works :-)
The excellent free tool available at

does the job at the remote computer side (when fed with the valid MAC and IP addresses).
I'm very pleased... but I wish MSI had somehow indicated that the motherboard is WOL capable !

M93p BIOS issue: PowerOff not correct if Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disabled and Wake on Lan Enabled

Hi Levnovo support team, Recently I bought a M93p tiny(10AAA05MTW)(BIOS revision FBKT56A)and installed with Ubuntu 13.10 myself.Then tried to enable wake on lan for my tiny. The followings are my test result. 1. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Enabled, no mateter what is Wake On Lan setting PowerOff system is OK. 2. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disable and Wake On Lan Disabled PowerOff system is OK. 3. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disabled and Wake On Lan Primary or Automatic PowerOff system is NG. When I tried to power off system, it always can poweroff(LEDs on front all off) then POWER ON again in 2 or 3 seconds. I cannot accept this test result ,system should poweroff not reboot again. It's really hard to understand why enabling Wake on Lan will affect power off function. I tried the same procedures with my another M92p(3212A16)(BIOS revision 9SKT70AUS), and it works well.

Did you ever get a fix for this?Having the same issue on 3 of 6 machines that just arrived.

Wake on lan (wol), uswsusp and 8139too

hello,
i want to get wake-on-lan working with uswsusp (or pm-utils, both don't work). when i halt the computer (like described here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Wake_on_lan#Manual_method) and sent a magic packet with "wol", the computer starts, but when i suspend through "s2disk" (or pm-hibernate or "echo disk > /sys/power/state") the network card settings get somehow erased so it does not receive the magic packet.
what i've done so far:
1.) ethtool -s eth0 wol g
2.) in my /etc/modprobe.conf i have: "install 8139too /sbin/modprobe -i 8139too; ethtool -s eth0 wol g"
3.) echo -n PCI1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup # (to get: "PCI1 S4 enabled")
4.) echo -n shutdown > /sys/power/disk # (default is platform)
for shutting down the computer the first and third entry and then simply running "halt" did the trick, but for hibernating it simply doesn't wnat to work. i've tried every combination of things above. nada!

that also didn't work (no driver, no interface).
there are thousands of howtos out there, but most of them concentrate on shutting down not hibernating the computer.
wol is a really nice feature. i often use ssh, my computer is always running when i'm not at home. and i want to use hibernate.
using wol would save a lot of power.
my network card:
Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc RTL8139 Ethernet (rev 10)
Subsystem: D-Link System Inc DFE-528TX 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter
though lshwd says:
8139too : D-Link System Inc.|DFE 530 TX+ Fast Ethernet Adapter
any other suggestions or hints?

i think the problem is that when hibernating the system is powered off by:
poweroff -d -f -h -i
with flags:
-d Don't write the wtmp record. The -n flag implies -d
-f Force halt or reboot, don't call shutdown(8)
-i Shut down all network interfaces just before halt or reboot
-h Put all harddrives on the system in standby mode just before halt or poweroff
i want to get rid of the -i flag. i don't know how to change this. there is no such configure option for uswsusp.
where can i change this for pm-utils if possible.
oh, as i see poweroff is a symlink to halt.
now i'm totally confused...

entry which, as a friend of mine using gentoo told me, also works with hibernate.
is there a similar setting for arch?

We want to use 802.1X and WOL together in this devices.So far it seems to be not possible.

Hi,
Depends on the authentication. If you have mac or login authentication there is no traffic allowed neither direction before successful authentication. However you may use Guest VLAN concept for WOL packets. With web portal authentication some traffic is allowed but as far I as know it is only arp, bootp so again maybe Guest vlan concept would be the solution.

K9NGM3-FIH and Wake-On-Lan?

Just updated my K9NGM3-FIH with the 2.7 BIOS and now I can't seem to find any way to get Wake-On-Lan on there, can anyone help me with this?

BIOS revisions seldom give new features, they are bugfixes and give new CPU support.
They do not improve speed or such....unless the speed is caused by a bug somewhere, but then a lot of people reported that.
BIOS is NOT a driver...leave it alone if you have no problems.
Anyway, in order to use WOL, you normally have to set the BIOS setting PME-wakeup and/or PCI-wakeup....as well in the driver that it needs to wakeup on magic-packet.
However, not all boards wakeup from poweroff, try sleep and see what it does.
What are you trying to do anyway? I ask this as wakeup-packets do not pass routers!! You have to be on the same LAN to send it.

MSI G70 Dragon Edition 2 and wake on lan

H77MA-G43 wake on lan (WOL) issue

Hi guys,
I need WOL to be enabled on 4 machine h77ma-g43 based, I3 3220 CPU.
I have last BIOS installed , 1,9, I've disabled eup, tryn' for half an hour to enable WOL on the integrated NIC but nothing seems to work...
I think the only way is to buy a new PCIE NIC... (because there's "wake on pcie" on the bios settings) and this is very disappointing.
PS. When mobo is turned off, I see no led activity, WOL software is well configured and I often use it with other mobos/PCs.
Any suggestion? If not... this is the first mobo I ever see that not support WOL!!

K9A2 CF Wake On Lan / WOL issue

Hi everyone,
Need a bit of help here
I've been finding it impossible to get Wake on Lan working on my PC. I cannot manage to get the lights on the back of the LAN port to stay on after sleep or shutdown. I've tried all different settings in BIOS:
- enabled hpet
- enabled acpi function
- set acpi state = s3
- enabled resume by pci (pme)
- enabled resume by pci-e
- in Vista device mgr I have enabled "Shutdown Wake-On-Lan"
- and "Allow this device to wake the computer" - although I didn't think that should go along with "allow the PC to turn off this device to save power".
I have also upgraded bios (1.8) and LAN driver (Realtek 8111B v6.216).
I'm not sure if the issue could be related to the PSU?
I'm completely out of ideas - can anyone help?
Has anyone got WOL working using the onboard LAN for this board K9A2 CF?

What happens is that CMOS forgets all manual settings you have done previously. Starts a-fresh. You set date, time, out-speed for the processor and boot order. Some other adjustment too, but what I don't know.
Did you use LiveUpdate for the procedure? LiveUpdate is easily disturbed because it runs in a busy Windows environment. That may be another reason for the problem you have. You may have to re-update. Please ust the forum USB-tool next time. It does its job in a quiet environment.

MSI P45 Diamond (MS-7516) Wake On LAN (WoL)

I buy a new computer with this motherboard (MSI P45 Diamond (MS-7516) BIOS v1.5) and try enable Wake on LAN function in bios, but i can't find it. Can be WoL enabled on this motherboard? How?

There is no option for it. Access the Device Manager and configure WoL there.

Wake-on-LAN (WOL)

Does anyone have Wake-on-LAN working? I downloaded a program called 'Wake550.app' which seems pretty straight forward. I have 'Wake for Ethernet network administrator access' enabled on the target computer. The computers are on the same subnet, but I just can't get it to work. This is a simple home network and its not worth investing in Apple's Remote Access software. Any suggestions?

I would also really like to know if it is possible to power-on a Mac via LAN. I haven't been able to get it to work, though I can wake my Macs from sleep. The Wikipedia article on Wake-on-LAN notes that a machine needs to reserve power for the ethernet card in order for WOL to work, so my guess is that the power management option that allows for WOL on Macs doesn't include reserving power for the ethernet card when the Mac is off.

K8N Neo4 Platinum and wake-on-lan

Hi,
I don't understand if the MSi K8N Neo4 Platinum has wake on lan capability..
There is in BIOS a setting in power manegement, but it's not loisting 'wake on lan'. In Windows (XP Pro), I can find a tool from MSI where I can setup a date/time for the PC to boot up, but nothing about WOL.
Can it do WOL ?
How does it work ?

H55M-E21 LAN off (LED off) in S3 state, can't use wake on LAN (WOL)

I'm using H55M-E21 and Win7.
I can put PC to sleep mode (S3) and can wake it up by PS2 keyboard. Now I want to try remote desktop to wake up and connect to the slept PC. I can't connect to it.
The LAN link is down, the link LED from the back of PC is off.
In BIOS -> Power management -> ACPI on, BIOS on, ACPI Stanby state = S3, EuP2013 diabled
In Wakeup Event -> Resume by PCIor PCI-E device enbled.
Please help.

There are a few things you should check. Go into device manager and open the properties for the NIC you are using for this remote connection. First click on the Power Management tab and make sure the options are checked to "Allow this device to wake the computer". I would uncheck the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" if it won't work while it's checked. You should also check the magic packet box.
Click on the Advanced tab and enable the option for "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on pattern match". I can't recall if the "Shutdown Wake-On-Lan" option is supposed to be enabled or disabled but try enabled first.
