Cisco's Options For A Ruggedized Access Point

I'm looking for a wireless solution for an open plant environment. I know Cisco sold ruggedized 350 access points. I also see they are discontinuing the 350. What is Cisco's ruggedized solution currently for 802.11b/g?

I beleive the 1200 were for outdoor but you may want to use a NEMA enclosure for the 1200. check out fabcorp and ydi for info and prices.

  • Proxy Setting for Multiple WiFi Access Points

I'm getting ready to roll out 30 iPads in a school setting.  They are going to be on a cart that teachers will be able to check out for class use, but will be returned to the computer lab each evening.  This creates a problem.
Throughout the building, we have several WiFi access points - next year we will have an access point in each classroom.  And of course we connect through a proxy server so that the district can block various wbsites.  As I am setting up my iPad to connect to each access point, I have to set the proxy server address for the access point; I would really like to be able to simply say "This is my proxy server address and port for EVERY WiFi access point in the building." and be done with it.  I haven't been able to find a way to do this -- it looks like I have to configure each access point individually.
Am I just missing something (I hope)?

I suspect you have the D-Link set up to make its network an entirely new subnet using NAT.
If you setup the D-Link as a bridge to the network created by the Extreme, things may work properly.
You may need to refer to the D-Link documentation to find out the proper way to do this.

  • Can a WS-PWR-PANEL be used for POE to Access Points?

We have an AP1010, AP1030, and an AIR-LAP-1232AG. Will they be able to use a WS-PWR-PANEL for POE?

    Hi Richard,
    The WS-PWR-PANEL only supports AP's with a single B-radio,so I think this will be problematic. Have a look;

  • Tool for viewing all access points simultaneously

We have 12 Cisco Aironet access points that we're working with. Is there a utility that can be used to view/manage those access points at the same time without having to login to each one from a separate browser?

    Hi Anthony,
When you hit this number of AP's you probably want to look into the WLC (Wireless Lan Controller) This appliance is perfect for managing AP's pushing new configs etc.

  • QoS for voice over access point AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9

Gracias.

    Julio,
Yes, you can do QoS on an IOS AP.  The below link describes how you configure it.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/docs/wireless/access_point/12.4_21a_JA1/configuration/guide/scg12421aJA1-chap15-qos.html
Keep in mind, that with a softphone, or even dual-band cell phones, the applicaiton has to be able to mark it's traffic appropriatly, for the QoS to work as it should.

  • Cisco 2500 controller with aironet 1600 access point

    Hi,
This my first wireless project, and I have a few questions about the installation :
1- some of the access point will be installed in branch offices, connected to the controller through the main MPLS netwrok ( is that possible).
2- If for any reason the connectivity between the AP and the controller get disconnected what will happend to the users connected to the access point.
3- can I have two vlan on the Aironet 1600, the first one to be connected to the controller through the MPLS netwrok and the second for users to public internet.(internet break out).
    Thanks,

Yes that setup will work. What the others are trying to explain is authentication if your WAN goes down. If your AP's are setup for FlexConnect and you are indeed using AP groups, (using 802.1x) you need to have a radius server and a backup AD sever to allow for authentication to still happen if the WAN goes down. If you have resources centralized, then when the WAN goes down, everything else goes down and no new authentications will take place and any re-authentications will fail with 802.1x.
Take a look at these links

  • Looking for a good app for viewing Wifi access point info

Does anyone know of an app which will show me all of the access points within reach - even if they all have the same name - and will display signal strength as well as other data?
I work in a place where I have to test the APs and verify that each one of them is up and running. They all have the same name so I need to verify their uniqueness by the MAC address. I also would like the ability to connect to a particular AP in the list and stay connected to it as I travel past other APs of the same name.
I tried WifiTrak but it crashes upon startup. I'm hesitant to buy an app without a recommendation because of this. I'm also hesitant to try WifiFoFum because it wasn't all that great on my WM device and it costs money.
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for your research on my behalf, but as I mentioned in the original post I have tried WiFiFoFum on a Windows Mobile device for free and it was kind of a turd. This makes me very hesitant to purchase it for my iPhone. If they offered a trial version I would give it a shot.
Has anybody actually tried any really good wifi network information tools for iPhone? Can anybody make a recommendation based on experience?

  • Unable to get ip address from DHCP server for Aironet 1130AG Access Point

I have a network in which DHCP server is enabled. I have read the installation guide also there it is mentioned that 1130G Access point will not have any staic ip assigned to it.So it will automatically get the ip from the DHCP server from the network. I have connected that from the network but it is unable to get the ip address from the same. The same thing i have configured in the netgear it is coming fine. I have seen the sonic wall and used the IPSU tool also from checking the ip address from Mac Address but i am not able to get the same. Please provide me some tips to check where i am wrong in configuration because the first web page also not coming because of the ip address.

    narendra,
I would suggest that the AP be connected to a laptop or desktop pc that would run a local dhcp server with a small scope setup...plenty of free ones on the web(this pc would obviously not be connected to your currnet network). This way you can watch the dhcp server hand the AP it's address (this can take a few minutes). Once you have the address use it to access the GUI and give the AP a static address (I find it good pratice to give all my autonomous AP's static addresses for ease of troubleshooting)...Hope that helps.

  • Best practice for having an access point giving out only a specific range

    Hey All,
I have an access point which is currently set to relay all dhcp request to the server DC-01, However the range that has been setup is becoming low on available IP addresses so I have been asked if it is possible to setup another range for the AP only.
Is there a way to set the DHCP up with a new range and say anything from that access point it will then give out a 192.168.2 subnet address as apposed to the standard 192.168.1 subnet?
Or would it be easier / better to create a superscope? and slowly migrate the users to a new subnet with a larger range?
Any help suggestions would be appreciated
    thanks
    Anthony

    Hi,
Maybe we could configure a DHCP superscope to achieve your target.

  • Setting up WRVS4400N for switch & wireless access point

Howdy, first post here.  What is the proper way to configure this device to act as a switch and wireless access point so I can connect it to a switch with router upstream?  I have a DLink router that was easy:  disable UPnP, disable DHCP, set an IP/Subnet, and it worked.
My main router has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 but in the WRVS4400N setup screen I only get a list box with a limited number of masks, all of which are 255.255.255.x.  Is there any way to specify the 240?

No. You cannot use a subnet mask larger then 255.255.255.0 on Linksys routers. They are only built to handle 255.255.255.0 and smaller. I guess they consider a LAN which requires a larger subnet, i.e. expects to run more then 253 networked devices requires a larger router.
The only thing you can do is to choose 255.255.255.0 and to pick an IP address which matches the IP address from which you expect to do the usual configuration work. If you use 10.0.0.0/255.255.240.0 but the computers which have to configure the router are all in 10.0.1.0/255.255.255.0 you can use that subnet. This works with computers even if they have a different subnet mask.
Of course, you can set any IP address you want, even one completely outside your normal LAN in order to "hide" the web interface from the normal LAN operation. The IP address of the router in your setup is irrelevant for the switching and wireless access. Both operate on ethernet/MAC addresses and the IP address of the router does not play any role there. If you use the 10 subnet mentioned before you could as well leave the router at 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0. Whenever you have to access the web interface of the router you must temporarily set a static IP address inside 192.168.1.* on the computer...

  • WiFi Security for a hostapd Access Point

    Hi,
I configured a TP-LINK TL-WN721N to serve as an access point using hostapd. I'm using WPA2, and I've set up MAC filtering, and a 16 character alphanumeric password from GRC. What else can I do to make my network more secure? This is my first experience with WiFi.
    Thanks in advance,
    SgrA

I think that is pretty secure. If you want more, you could try something like forcing the use of a vpn; like, once they get an ip, they can only get access to the port of the vpn on your server, and everything else is blocked.
If they want something else, like web navigation, they have to do it over the vpn. That way, even if they get access to your lan, they can't do anything without the vpn certs. Try to do it using openvpn

  • How do I let Apple know they need to include an option for controlling the insertion point cursor in system preferences?

    As described above.
I have spent far too much time investigating this issue! All I would like to do is have the insertion point cursor (the 'I' shaped text thing) not dissapear when navigating text in a word document with the arrow keys.
Some forums say it's an apllication issue, i.e. microsoft, others say you used to be able to do it in older versions of mac os'.
This isn't a problem for Mac programmes. Obviously it is an issue when Microsoft programmes cross over to Mac. If the computer was a PC then I could customise the blinking rate, turn it on or off etc under the control panel options. With a Mac running MS Office I have not got this option.
So how do I go about telling Apple of my displeasure? So hopefully for future editions of OS or Office for Mac this very minor but completely infuriating problem gets ironed out?
    Cheers x

Thank you Ralph n Kurt, very quick off the mark boys, well done
Just checking in to inform you that today, after putting up with the issue for over a year, it has sorted itself out, MIRACLE! I don't know how but I've got a fully trackable insertion point when I navigate with my arrow keys!!
Do you think it's the big-wigs (because I complained to both Mac n MS) tweaking my computer behind the secenes? and if so which one would've done it? My money's on the geniusii.
Either way I am well chuffed and thanks again!

  • Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 - Do access points use up a node count license?

    Hi Everyone,
I wish to purchase Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, particularly Cisco part # R-LMS-4.1-500-K9 which support 500 Cisco nodes.
We have about 360 Cisco switches/routers/ASA/FWs/WLCs so the 500 nodes license would seem to suffice for now & for future growth.
We also have about 200 lightweight APs that are managed & monitored by our WLC/WCS/Navigator environment.
According to the device support documentation for LMS, it supports and I assume will auto-discover these APs.
Does that mean these APs will use up node licenses on LMS even though management of the APs is done by WLC/WCS?  If so is there an easy way to suppress discovery of APs by LMS so we don’t have to purchase extra node licenses for LMS?  Or, does LMS offer additional support features for wireless APs not already offered by WLC/WCS/Navigator?
Just trying to understand how many network node licenses for LMS I have to purchase.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Ian.

Thanks but I just heard back from my Cisco SE and he assures me that an AP will NOT use up a license.
I've asked him to verify his answer for me.
Is your answer based on real world expereince (the best there is)?  That is, are you running Prime LMS 4.1 and does it indeed use up a license for each light-weight AP it discovers & manages?
Thanks for mentioning options 1-3 but I do not wish to employ any of them.  I don't mind buying the additional licenses for APs ... I just need to know if I have to or not.
    Ian.
