Cisco switch model question

Can someone tell what the -L,-S, or -E designation means on Cisco equipment? For example, looking at the
WS-C3650-24TD-S ?

Hi,
According to your description, your question is about Cisco hardware. Here is the Microsoft TechNet Forum and mainly focused on product Windows Server System. I recommend you to ask the hardware vendor(Cisco) for official support.
Or you may reference link which Dave Patrick’s provided.

• Cisco switches AVB Support

Hi,
Does any one have idea if any Cisco Switch model have (or will have) AVB Feature (Audio Video Bridging) support available ? What switching product have you used for AVB deployments? There should be something from Cisco available now or in near future.

AFAIK, Cisco IE4000 (based on 3750X hardware) supports AVB and nothing else today. You may contact Cisco to confirm the availability and roadmaps. The major market is the industrial control facilities. HTH,

Start by working throudh the Troubleshooting iOS and WiFi knowledge base article and see if that helps the situation.  When you get to shutting down the router, be sure to disconnect power as shutdown on some is really just standby mode.

• Question related to SFP, Fiber, and switches model Compatibility for Gigs Connections

Hi everyone,
I am in the middle of a project where we are receiving a 2gig Internet connection from a service provider. I need to connect this to a switch , my question is related to what sfp, switch would be the most compatible. I was thinking about a 3750 switch with sfp modules, but i am not sure if a SFP 1000 sx is enough as we are receiving a 2 gig connection via fiber then I would need to use a 10G module, with 10G sfps... mm well i am very confuse... can anyone help me please in your experience with a similar situation
Thanks.

A "2 gig" connection might mean a 10g logically limited to 2g, or it might mean the full duplex capacity of a gig link.
The SFP+ ports on 10g 3750X modules will support either a gig or 10g transceiver.  The SPF ports, on either 10g or gig modules will only support gig.

• Any one ever worked on 6500 series Cisco switches QOS or 6503 or 6524 QOS(Urgent help needed)

Hi All,
I am having issue specifally doing QOS configuration on 6503 or 6524 or 6509 switches. I am unable to match any EF(voice) traffic for eompls(vlan based) on 6503 cisco switch. If i use any other router as 2811 or 2821 my QOS configuration works perfect but if i put 6503 as PE2 it does not work.i am using vlan based eompls.
Below is the scenario & configuration which i am having issue.
CE1(2821 router)(dot1Q)--------->PE1(2821 router)------->P(6524 switch)-------->PE2(6503 switch)------->(dot1Q)(2821 switch)CE2.
On CE1 i can match ip-precedence 5 traffic and mark that traffic to cos5 on outbound port.On PE1 i can match cos5 packet and mark with mpls exp top5 on inbound port, on outbound port i can match mpls exp 5.
On PE2(6503) i am unable to match that mpls exp5 packet on inbound port. none of the configuration worked on 6500 series switches with mls qos, ,mls qos trust dscp, mls qos trust cos etc. Although i can match cos5 traffic on CE2 on inbound interface.i can not match mpls exp 5 traffic on 6503 and all i can see traffic as default-class on 6503 switch. I tried many things and many configurations on 6503 but nothing worked. If i put 2821 router as PE2 instead of 6503 my qos configuration works. but why if i put 6503 my same qos configuration does not work?

Can anyone tell me how qos works on 6500 series switches or where i am having issue in my scenario.
i am using this ios on 6503: s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI3.bin.
below r my questions for 6503 qos:
1.do i need to use some other map tables,am i  using correct map tables on 6503 as cos-dscp,dscp-cos,exp-dscp etc.
2.any other configutaion of qos needed on 6503?
3.i am unable to match anything on outbound port of 6503.
4.on 6503 i am using sup720 and PFC3BXL.any specific configuration needed for PFC3bxl.
5. 6503 not allowing me to match qos-group on inbound interface, not allowing me to set cos5 on outbound interface. not allowing me to set cos5 as an inbound interface.

• Access to Cisco Switch Modbus Register Map? via Modbus TCP or Modbus RTU

Hello Folks, I have been trying to find out how to access the Modbus Register Map(s) of Cisco switches, of particular interest is that of an IE 3000 as it is din rail mountable (but for models 2960s, 3560s are also of interest).  A google search for: Cisco Switch Modbus TCP results in (if I may) how to configure a Cisco 2520 to do what I am trying to do.  I would be very grateful for any hints anybody might have.  Thanks

Though I am not familiar with the specific drives in question, I have used Modbus/TCP in LabVIEW a few times recently.
As the previous posters pointed out, there are a couple of VI libraries available.  LabVIEW 2014 added Modbus VI's with the DSC and LabVIEW Real-Time.  The others you would have to get and add in yourself.
Another option is to use LabVIEW I/O Servers; as long as you have DSC or Real-Time, you can create Modbus I/O Servers as library items and deploy to a target.  You don't get as much direct control in this way (and may run into difficulties if you need them to be field-configurable and do not have DSC) and use bound network shared variables, but they are very fast and easy to setup and I have yet to have any issues with using them in my applications.
A tutorial on setting up a Modbus I/O Server: http://www.ni.com/tutorial/13911/en/
A tidbit on deciding between Modbus VI's and a Modbus I/O Server: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370622M-01/lvmve/choose_modbus_ioserver_vi/
As for using an Ethernet switch to connect multiple devices, I have used this approach many times to simultaneously connect and control numerous PC's, real-time controllers, and drives without issue.  I would not expect there to be any problems unless you have extenuating circumstances.  In fact, if you only have one network interface on your device at the moment, I would recommend against adding a second, as this would mean that you / your controller would have to be extra aware of which interface everything is assigned to go through.

• ISE web auth for non-cisco switch(D-link 3528)

Is it possible to use ISE(inline posture node) to redirect the wired users to ISE guest portal ?
And the wired users will get full network access after they pass the web auth.

you can use ISE ln-line posture node with 3rd part switches
RADIUS access device must supply the following RADIUS attributes:
        Calling-Station-Id (for MAC_ADDRESS)
        User-Name
        NAS-Port-Type
RADIUS accounting message must have the Framed-IP-Address attribute
VLAN, DACL features can be used  but again it depends on switch models let us know  specific switch  models . Certain advanced use cases, such as those that involve posture assessment, profiling, and web authentication, are not consistently available with non-Cisco devices or may provide limited functionality,

• Configure Domain Controller ( PDC emulator) as NTP source for Cisco switch 6509

Hi All,
My Org consists of 2 DC one Physical and One Virtual. All Roles are on Physical machine. I ran a W32tm /Query /Configuration command  on PDC emulator and the results are confusing. My PDC is using time source VMICTimeProvider a syou can see below.
VMICTimeProvider (Local)
DllName: C:\Windows\System32\vmictimeprovider.dll (Local)
Enabled: 1 (Local)
InputProvider: 1 (Local)
My first Question is that Is it Ok for PDC emulator to use this time source or should I change to some Other source like pool.ntp.org or time.windows.com,0x1.
My Second Question is that I  have a core switch cisco 6509 and I want this switch to use my NTP server (PDC emulator ) as NTP source, but at present I cannot as I am getting this error on switch.(no select intersectionTP )
Can Any one help ... Its is urgent
Thanks in Advance
EagleAsh

You should not make your DCs sync their time with your Hypervisor. This usually ends with time synchronization problem so I would recommend to disable that on your DCs and domain joined VMs and use an external NTP server to sync time on your PDC while using
your AD forest topology for time sync on other DCs and domain-joined computers.
I have already started a Wiki article that describes how to configure time sync in an AD domain and you might consider using the GPO configuration option that is stated: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18573.time-synchronization-in-active-directory-forests.aspx
For the CISCO switch, I would recommend asking them in CISCO forums.

• Connecting 300 IP Cameras using Cisco Switches

Require help on a Case study. (Can only use Cisco switch)
Description:
This is a setup required for 300 security cameras.
So availability and redundancy is important.
I have calculate the bandwidth using this software.
If each camera is set to 5MP and H.264-10, Bandwidth is 12.08Mbit
So 300 cameras will require at least 3624.96Mbits in total.
(correct me if i am wrong)
Each NVR has 32 port.
It will be just connecting within a LAN.
Here is the brief 2 possible design I have draft out, but I am not sure which model and series of cisco switch to be use??
Design 1:
Design 2:
Please advise which model and series can be used for this 2 two of design.

Hello Chun,
you need to accomodate 300 cameras and 32 ports for each network video recorder.
data flows are from cameras to network video recorder ports.
The amount of traffic per port at port connected to cameras is not huge and total traffic from cameras exceed GE links
48 * 12,08 =       ?? in any case less then     < 1 Gbps
You can deploy a hierarchical network design with an access layer made of switches with fixed configuration 48 ports and GE uplinks like a C3750 with 48 ports or  a 2960 with 48 ports (if it exists)
Each access layer switch needs to have two uplinks to distribution switches
And you need 300/48 switches => 7 switches     => 7 GE uplinks on each distribution switches
Distribution switches should be two and should be able to connect to access layer switches and to NVR that requires 32 ports each.
Different solutions are possible:
instead od deploying 7 standalone switches with 48 ports each you could use two modular C4507 equipped with  WS-4548 48 10/100/1000 linecards
the distribution switches can be two C3750 E, eventually configured and connected as a stack, to allow to use both uplinks of each access layer switch
Hope to help

• Cisco Switches Training

Hi there,
I work for a small business as an I.T network engineer. We have recently started to supply to Cisco SG500 switches to our client's network, not to different from another switch supplier.
What I was looking to know if there are any specific training courses for Cisco switches or even more specifically the SG500 model. I have looked through the Cisco networking academy which doesn't really look to be applicable for the day to day functionality of the switch. Even if someone could point me in the right direction of the place to start looking - could be something on the CCNA program that could help or a third party training provider.
Many thanks,
Jonathan - PBL

Hi Jonathan,
The CCNA is a great resource for learning a broad set of entry-level knowledge for networking.  This includes switching topics such as STP and VTP.  If you would like even more knowledge of switching technologies, the CCNP Switch exam goes more in-depth with Layer 2 technologies and is a great resource for learning how to manage a switch in a business environment.
For information regarding the specific device, you can look through the following link:

• Power Over ethernet on Cisco switches - why??

I administer 3 servers (two g4 towers and one xserve attached to an XCraid) and 50 Macintosh workstations in an agency/production group within a fairly large company (2000+). Like most major companies the majority of the computer and servers are Windows based (specifically DELL) with CISCO switches.
I ran into a problem today where a switch was updated the "OS of the swithc" without my knowledge by our Infrastructure group. This resulted in a very high latency problem when pulling files from our Apple servers. After some digging we determined that the feature "Power Over Ethernet" had been disabled when they updated the switch's OS. Once we enabled PoE back on those ports, it was back to business.
My question here is, why does this feature have to be enabled? All DELL servers reconnected without a hitch. I hear PoE is only really resevered for VoiP devices and such. What is it with Apple servers that need this feature turned on?
Look forward to hear from you all.

I can confirm that portfast makes a huge difference, as the autonegotiation between the switch and the client is performed inside of about 2 seconds, rather than the standard thrash-around period of about 40 seconds that some ethernet devices can use to determine line speed and simplex / duplex operation.
Turn on portfast on any switch ports that you don't plan on using for trunking / uplinking. When you do this, it tells the switch that there isn't a managed switch / router downstream, so it doesn't need to try to negotiate routing protocols and whatnot - it greatly speeds up the autonegotiation process.
Also, on some Cisco switches (We found it on a Cisco Catalyst 4006) if you lock the port to a specific operating speed / mode (e.g. 100Mbps / full duplex), the Mac doesn't like it nearly as much as if you leave it to autonegotiation. We were having the exact same issue the OP is seeing (limited bandwidth, massive CRC error count) until we put it back to auto and enabled portfast, and then we got the performance we expected, without recurrence of the issue.

• Any script to let me find out which Cisco switches have RSA key less than 800 bit?

Hi,
Imagine I have 500 Cisco switches (2950, 3750, 4507), IOS 12.3 but some may have different IOS level.
I know that some of these switches got 'cry key gen rsa' key size = 512.
I need to have key size = 800 bit.
We do not have Cisco Works in place. Someone in my organization tells me that I would need all these switches at 800 bit otherwise CiscoWorks can't login to it. Does that make sense? I am not sure if I understand that correctly.
Question:
If it is true that CiscoWorks can't access such switches and let me change that setting automatically, do you know any script which I could use to let me run against a list of IP addresses and query the switches to find out where RSA key is 800 bits? If it is not 800 bit, I would like to log a message so that I could go manually to the switch to re-execute 'cry key gen rsa' and do 800 bit instead.

IOS 12.3 doesn't run on any of these switches.
LMS can login to switches with an RSA modulus of 512 bits.  It will just use SSHv1 instead of v2.  I do not know of any pre-built scripts to change the modulus size; however, it would be relatively trivial to do with expect.  You could deploy one command to avoid the interactivity:
crypto key generate rsa gen mod 800

• Firewall Ports Required for NAC manager to manage/add Cisco switch

Hi,
I am trying to add cisco switches to the NAM, however i am not able to add the switch as I am getting the error "unable to control switch" I have tried to open ports 161-162 on the firwall; if i was to allow any traffic between the NAM and switch, the cisco NAM is able to add/manage the switch.
Not sure what other ports may be required for cisco NAM to manage the switch?
Thanks.

Hi,
AFAIK, only the UDP ports 161-162 for the SNMP communication need to be open.
Please make sure you have configured the correct port on the switch:
(config)# snmp-server host 172.16.1.61 traps version 2c cam_v2 udp-port 162 mac-notification snmp
If still not working i would check the logs on the firewall for any blocked traffic between the CAM and the switch.
HTH,
Tiago

• Cisco switches and 802.1.x

Hi, there !
I have a question for you.
Cisco all switches, is it impossible to present for 802.1x ?
I try to put a network access server in our network to authenticate.
Thanks.
I will wait your answer.
Regards.

Most Cisco switches will handle 802.1x, but it depends on the switch and the OS. Which specific ones are you considering?

• Option 82 on Cisco switches.

Hi!
I have a question about how does option 82 work on cisco switches.
From one source, i read that Cisco switches always insert option 82 in every dhcp request by default.
From another source, i read that Cisco switches will insert option 82 information only if dhcp relay configured.
Which statement is correct?
Thanks!

Paul, thanks for reply!
Also, nice explanation from Peter Paluch here:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11703441/dhcp-snooping-not-working-dropping-packets
But i still have a problem with it.
I have tested insertion of option 82 in following configuration:
One 2960S switch, and two notebooks connected to it in vlan 1:
DHCP snooping and option 82 insertion are  enabled:
DHCP snooping is configured on following VLANs:
1
DHCP snooping is operational on following VLANs:
1
PC1 is configured for DHCP. PC2 is used for wireshark to sniff traffic.
As i understand, if dhcp snooping is not enabled, PC2 will receive dhcp request from PC1 without option 82.
If dhcp snooping is enabled , PC2 will receive  DHCP request from PC WITH option 82.
However, in second case i dont see option 82 in wireshark.
But why?
