Cisco UCS Director UCS Manager/Central Comparison

Hello Community,
Can someone please tell me what are the fundamental differences between Cisco UCS Director and UCS Manager/Central?
Cheers
Carlton

Carlton,
I am pretty sure this post (3 in total) from Jeremy Waldrop's blog (Jeremy usually visits this community too) will help explain UCS Director:  http://jeremywaldrop.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/cisco-ucs-director-part-1/
Besides what you can see in the above link... UCS Manager is usually used for a single domain while UCS Central is used to integrate more than domain into a unique central point...

  • Is there a way to manage EMC VMAX SRDF from UCS Director?

Running UCS Director to manage converged infrastructure including EMC VMAX, can I configure SRDF replication from the UCS Director UI? Are there workflows to do that? Can I accomplish this indirectly using scripts? Can I view the VMAX SRDF configuration?
    Much thanx!

A friend told me that you can manage your favorites list from you online account instead of using the TV and remote. I have tried to find this feature but cannot. Is this a feature, and if so can someone tell me how to access it? Thanks!
My Verizon > TV & Movies > TV Listings & DVR
Hover over the channel number and you should see a pop up allowing you to add or delete that channel from favorites.  But... in my experience it is MUCH harder than doing it on the TV.  Plus it doesn't work for all of my STBs.
Also for the STB it does work on it forces the same faorite list on all boxes.

  • Want to hear about vCAC when used with Cisco UCS Director... How are you seeing this done?

I have a client that has both VMware vCloud Automation Center, and Cisco UCS Director.
They wish to constuct a net-new (Greenfield) data center and are hearing from both VMware and Cisco.
I have researched, and found little regarding the merger of the two.
I realize that very likely vCAC is teh "main" management platform, while Cisco UCSD will handle the more "physical hardware" tasks.
REST API's will be leveraged as well.
What have you seen written and done in this space when using BOTH?
Please send me any thoughts or links to relevant data.
I am having a hard time locating good data so that I an advise the client in a good way.

    Bahi,
just to illustrate what mess this is, I tested for you on Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6) using the same wide gamut monitor. Here are two screenshots from that experiment. I converted the screenshots from my display profile to sRGB to show you what I see and scaled down 50% (this is a 30" behemoth). First Leopard.
You see they are all the same, but different from the sRGB export you provided. The GB sticker is too blue and the tint on the car is wrong. I doubt anybody but a photographer would notice though.
    Next is Snow Leopard:
Here the 320 pixel, the 480 pixel and the 960 pixel image are different from the 720 pixel, the 720p and the 1080p ones. Neither is strictly correct as they are all different from the sRGB display. This is consistent with their being no real color management, just gamma corrections and color space transforms (video is usually not stored as RGB but as YUV, necessitating a transform for display). Annoying, but not much you can do about it.
Just doing some quick googling I came across many mentions of issues such as this. It clearly is just a big mess.

  • Cisco UCS Director Login Problem

    Hello Community,
    I have recently installed Cisco UCS Director 5.1. According to the documentation the initial login requirements are admin for username and admin for password, see image;
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/ucs-director/vsphere-install-guide/5-1/b_Installing_UCSDirector_on_vSphere_5_1/b_Installing_UCSDirector_on_vSphere_5_1_chapter_010.html
    However, authentication keeps on failing.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Carlton

    Sergey,
If this is a real I2C issue, you may still see the same behavior on 2.0.x release if the I2C bus was not cleared before the upgrade. (in this moment I don't know if you recently performed an upgrade on the system or not)
I2C bus tranports information about the different components of the Unified System, this, meaning Chassis, IOMs, Fans, PSU, etc...  What happens is that all those components try to send theit status update while other do the same and then the I2C bus gets overwhelmed, and then noone can really report their real status, so we usually recommend the customer ro reseat all major components, one at the time, to clear the bus and then do the upgrade, if that is not done before the upgrade, it still should be done after.
Try reseating the Fans and PSU, one at the time, leaving a minute in between and then, IOMs one at the time, leaving three minutes in between and begining with the subordinate to cause minimun disruption.
If this does not clear the situation, then you will need to remove one of the components already mentioned, one at the time and do a "show tech-support chassis # all brief" to see what the I2C bus reports segment by segment (chassis, Fans, PSUs...) once you remove a component and the errors on each segment stop incrementing you will have your faulty piece of hardware, and a TAC case will be needed to send a replacement.
For further analysis or assistance, I strongly recommend a TAC case to be opened.

  • Cisco UCS Director Foundation (UCSDF) 5.0 Training

    Hello Community,
Can anyone help me where i can attend the following Training for  (( Cisco UCS Director Foundation (UCSDF) 5.0 )) as i can not find a schedual in CISCO training locator .. It is highly important for me as i have an implementation soon and i need to get its knowledge .
    Thanks & Best Regards ,
    Mostafa Elgindy

    Mostafa,
I think you'll have a little problem getting this running. There is huge interest in this topic but to be fair, Cisco has only just now (the past two weeks) released the 5.0 course materials to the instructors. So far as I know, me and two other instructors are the only instructors in Europe which are both certified to teach this class as well as actually have hands on experience with Director. In addition, we can't as instructors get our hands on the actual product outside of dCloud to actually update our knowledge for v5.0 because of the insanely stupid terms involved.
I have been asked three times so far to deliver this course. I've said no 3 times. I wouldn't even consider it without a few weeks to prepare, so I personally won't deliver it before March. There are some guys who like reading slides that will do it sooner, but you may have issues with getting questions answered.

  • Looking into UCS. Do I need UCS Director?

    Hello Everyone
I am brand new to UCS.  I am getting quotes from Cisco on new UCS system.  About a year ago we got quotes for this system to add to next years budget and on this quote there is a new item and that is about 10K for UCS support package.
In reading about this it sounded like this was for really large environments.
Our environment is going to be one chassis and 8 blades.  5 of the blades will be used for Hyper V cluster which is managed by SCVMM and orchestrator for automation.  In a few years we may look into getting another system for failover site.
Changes on VM environment are not frequent.  About 100 VMs
    Thanks

In your environment (almost static), UCS Manager (which doesn't require a license, bundled with fabric interconnect) is ok.
UCS Director (the name is misleading) allows automatic provisioning and automation of the infrastructure (Ethernet and Fibrechannel switches, UCS, storage).
In your case with a Windows Hyper-V environment, I would recommend to look into Powershell / Powerscripts. UCS has a library of around 1800 commandlets; its free of charge.
Everything you can do with GUI (UCSM), can be done with PS scripts.

Hi, in response to your questions:
    1. software bug on UCS Director 5.0.0.0 or 5.0.0.1.
I have managed to connect vCenter 5.1 in our environment so don't think it's related to this
    2. unsupported vCenter 5.5U2 integration with current / latest UCS Director software
The compatibility matrix mentions 5.5, however it doesn't specify if that includes U2 or not, perhaps you could send a screenshot of the configuration as you have it when trying to complete the addition of the virtual account?
    3. no UCS Director pod license. I saw there is no small/medium/ enterise pod licence so this might be an issue.
Not too familiar with the breakdown of the licensing unfortunately as we have a complete license implemented in our environment, although I would expect vCenter licenses to be part of the base licensing model

  • Post-provisioning workflow in UCS Director

    Hi
I created a service request in UCS director (v4.1) to provision a VM.
Additionally I created/added post-provisioning workflow to that service request with the purpose to sent the custom report upon completing the provisioning process.
The question here: How I can access the provisioned VM details from my custom workflow task's Cloupia script without asking the user to enter them manually? I am interested to get details like assigned IP address of the VM and its hostname at least and then to build some logic around.
    Thanks in advance

  • Cannot add vCenter as Physical Account in UCS Director 5.0.0

    hello all,
I am having problem to connect vCenter 5.5U2 from UCS Director 5.0.0. In the add physical account page, there is a mandatory field for cloud name and I have no idea where to setup this on vCenter server in order to add the account successfully. I could not use own cloud name and received error could not connnect to the cloud name. Has anyone in this forum successfully perform this task?
Any assistance for me is much appreciated.

    Hello All,
I am trying to access UCS director API from a webpage to perform GetAllVMs operation but it is throwing Error "401, unauthorized". I believe it has something to do with the Key Value pair I am passing.
Can someone show me an example on how to execute operation by passing key in the request header. I checked the developer's guide but example has not been provided htere.

  • How do I get to the console of a VM using UCS Director?

Is there a way with UCS Director to present users of the system the console of the VM like when you launch the VSphere Client and bring up the console?  I can see that users can RDP into a running machine or connect to a web interface but that appears to assume the machine is accessible.

I did that twice. Once, about an hour ago. And nothing changed. I did it again about twenty minutes ago, and still nothing. A few minutes ago I tried yet another force quit. And .... that seemed to do the trick. The offending email message is gone.
So my problem seems to be solved.
But the larger issue remains of a major bug in Mac OS, it seems. If a dialogue box is larger than the screen size, how is someone ever going to be able to deal with closing it or anything else? It would make sense to automatically allow the cursor to scroll down to the very bottom of any dialogue box, regardless of its size. After all, that's how windows work, right?
    Crazy!

  • UCS Director physical account rights

I cannot find what the physical accounts minimal rights requierments are?
This is for UCS Director 5.0 / 5.1.
For example what needs an account for connectiong a Nexus switch need?
Does is always need full rights, or can we create an account with only limited rights on the Nexus switch for UCS Director?

If you want it to do anything, it'll probably need full rights.  If you just want to inventory the switch, you can probably get away with a limited access account.

  • Ask the Expert: C-Series Integration with Cisco Unified Computing System Manager

Welcome to the Cisco Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. This conversation is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Cisco C-Series Integration with Cisco Unified Computing System® Manager (Cisco UCS® Manager) with Cisco experts Vishal Mehta and Manuel Velasco.
Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Servers are managed by the built-in standalone software, Cisco Integrated Management Controller (Cisco IMC). When a C-Series rack-mount server is integrated with Cisco UCS Manager, the IMC no longer manages the server. Instead you will manage the server using the Cisco UCS Manager GUI or Cisco UCS Manager command-line interface (CLI).
Cisco UCS Manager 2.2 provides three connectivity modes for Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Server management. The following are the connectivity modes:
Dual-wire management (shared LAN On Motherboard [LOM]): Shared LOM ports on the rack server are used exclusively for carrying management traffic.A separate cable connected to one of the ports on the Payment Card Industry Express (PCIe) card carries the data traffic.
SingleConnect (Sideband): Using Network Controller Sideband Interface (NC-SI), the Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card 1225 (VIC1225) connects one cable that can carry both data and management traffic.
Direct Connect Mode: Cisco UCS Manager Version 2.2 introduces an additional rack server management mode using direct connection to the Fabric Interconnect.

    Hello Sebastian,
The different modes of connecting C-Series with UCSM come into play depending on the type of infrastructure you already have along with C-Series and NIC model.
Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Servers are managed by the built-in standalone software, Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) .
Powerful features provided by Cisco UCS Manager can be leveraged to manage C-Series server by integrating  C-Series Rack-Mount Server with UCSM.
This not only gives you rich-feature set but also one management plane to operate UCS-B Series Chassis and UCS-C Series Rack Server.
You will manage the server using the Cisco UCS Manager GUI or Cisco UCS Manager CLI.
Cisco UCS Manager 2.2 provides three connectivity modes for Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Server management.
The following are the connectivity modes:
    •  Dual-wire Management (Shared LOM):
Shared LAN on Motherboard (LOM) ports on the rack server are used exclusively for carrying management traffic. A separate cable connected to one of the ports on the PCIe card carries the data traffic. Using two separate cables for managing data traffic and management traffic is also referred to as dual-wire management.
