Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller Vs Hardware Controller

Our WiSM needs to be upgraded.
We were given a choice of virtual (cheaper)  or hardware controller.
We were told that the virtual controller is designed differently and the usual traffic does not go through the controller.
question:
how does this impact security or other features of cisco wireless solution?
and if you have any other comments/experience  with the virtual controller
THANKS

I can't really comment on the security question, other than, it depends on your network design :)
Regarding features, if you already manage a controller and know the required features, you find here a good comparison of all controllers and its features:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/buyers-guide.html#~controllers
I think the feature in question was "Central Mode" which the virtual one lacks. The more modern (or actually the way it was before we had controllers) is "Flex Connect". In this mode the data will be put in the correct VLAN directly at the port the access point is connected to. That means that you will need to configure a Trunk port on the Switch for each AP. Depending on your building security, that could be seen as an issue. You could protect that with 802.1x between AP and Switch.

                       Hello,
Does the Cisco Virtual WLC support the 1230AP?
There is a list of supported AP's from the data sheet the1230 isnt listed, maybe shoould assume no support?!
    http://http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/wireless/ps6302/ps8322/ps12723/data_sheet_c78-714543.html
    Regards,
    Garry.

no, it doesn't.  But it has to do with the 7.3 code, as that is the lowest code the vWLC can run.

  • Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller licensing

    Hello everyone!
We are about to start using vWLC, currently using default 60 days evaluation license
There are couple of questions regarding licensing:
    1. Will the serial number change if we migrate the virtual machine from one host to another or if it rehosts automatically?
    2. If yes, what to do with the license? It is tied to the serial number as far as I know. Is there any way to generate a new license when the serial number changes?
    Thank you!

I have received a license for vWLC but I entered the wrong Serial Number during the registration process and I have just realized it. I tried to rehost the license on cisco.com, entered UDI and correct serial number, received the new license and when I try to install it I received this error:
Failed license installation at index:0 : UDI in license line does not match with the local udi
My current UDI is AIR-CTVM-K9, but during the rehost process this UDI was rejected and I used L-LIC-CTVM-UPG. I successfully received the new license file, but I can not install it with the error described before.
Is there anything we can do about it?

  • Problem getting Airprint (Bonjour) to communicate to HP LaserJet CP1525nw printer across a Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller

I cannot get my IPad2 to print (it cannot find the printer) using a Laserjet CP1525nw color printer across a wireless network using a Cisco 1508 Wireless Controller with 49 wireless access points. HELP!!!!
What is the secret to getting Bonjour to work on it?
I can get the IPad2 to locate the HP CP1525nw printer without a hitch using a low budget Netgear WAG102 stand alone wireless access point on the same network.

If it helps somebody, here is what you need to do.
It worked for me, but only in Multicast-Unicast mode.

  • How to replace the certificate of Cisco 2106 wireless LAN controller for CAPWAP ?

I have interested in CAPWAP feature and I download the open capwap project to make Access Controller (AC) and Wireless Terminal Point (WTP). I had built the AC which used PC and WTP which used Atheros AP. The CAPWAP feature work well when I enabled the CAPWAP that used my own AC  and WTP. When I got the Cisco 2106 wireless LAN controller (Cisco WLC), I configured the Cisco WLC to instead my own AC but I got the authorize fail in Cisco WLC side. It seem the Cisco WLC could not recognize the CAPWAP message which sent form my own WTP. I think this issue just need to synchronize the certificate between Cisco WLC and WTP.So I need to replace the Cisco WLC's certificate manually. Does anyone know how to replace the certificate manually with Cisco WLC ?
    Best Regards,
    Alan

Unfortunately this Support Community is for Cisco Small Business & Small Business Pro product offerings.  The WLC2106 is a traditional Cisco product.  You can find this type of support on the Cisco NetPro Forum for all traditional Cisco products.

  • Can't add my new license on my cisco 2500 wireless controller

    hello,
i already have 25 license installed on my Cisco 2500 wireless controller.
but when i need add my new bundle license, i can't see him on my admin panel.
i following this steps for installing my new license :
1- i go on WLC panel
    2- management => software activation => commands
    3- i select "install license"
    4- i setting a correct path
5- when i clic on "install license", i can see two following message : "File transfer operation started" and "Installation Process Completed ". but when i go on "licenses" i can't see
    tanks for help

    Hi Serge,
In case you have another license installed on the controller with higher license than the one that you are installing, then the license installation will fail.
In case you want to install a new license with higher number of AP count, then you can install it, then save and reboot the controller.
Also I noticed when you install a new license and the summation of the previously installed license and the newly installed license is exceeding the max allowed AP count on the controller, then the installation will fail.
In such scenario, deactivate the current license by making the evaluation license priority to high, then after that install the new license and then change the priority to medium and make the evaluation license to low in addition to the previous license.
    Kind Regards
    Mohammad Setan

  • Software Version Upgrade for Cisco 4402 Wireless Lan Controller

    Hi,
We have Cisco 4402 Wireless Lan Controller with Software Version 3.2.171.6 and we want to upgrade it to latest version.
So can anyone please let me know the latest version to upgrade the WLC?
Also since WLC is running on very lower version is it possible to upgrade to the latest version directly or we have to move it step by step to upgrade this to latest version?
    Thanks

Take a look at the compatibility matrix below:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/5500/tech_notes/Wireless_Software_Compatibility_Matrix.html
7.0.235 is the latest that you can go to:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn7_0_235_0.html
The release notes outline the upgrade process.
"Upgrade to 4.0.206.0 or later 4.0 release, then upgrade to 4.2.176.0, before upgrading to 7.0.235.0."

  • Connecting Virtual Machine to physical Domain Controller

    Hello,
I have a Hyper-V environment set up. My virtual machines are on my domain controller. I would like to connect these virtual machines onto the domain controller I am hosting them on. I have tried however I always get the error saying the domain controller
    cannot be contacted.
    Thanks in advance,
    Maksim Richards

http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/06/16/how-does-basic-networking-work-in-hyper-v.aspx is a good article that explains the basics
of Hyper-V networking.  What you are describing generally comes down to understanding the basics and getting your virtual networking switch(es) properly configured.  When it comes to networking, IP is the same whether using physical or virtual machines.
You have to ensure that you have the proper paths in place that allow the communications to take place.
As for support of Hyper-V on a DC, I've not seen that it is unsupported.  Bad idea?  Yes.  Recommended practice?  No.  Would I do it?  No.  Should it work?  Absolutely.  Supported?  I haven't seen a Microsoft
    statement on that.

  • Making a hardware controller out of logic remote

    Hey people,
    I need your help!
I'm deep into creating MIDI controllers with MIDIbox electronics. What I really need is a hardware controller, that acts like the logic remote.
Most of the functions I can simulate with simple midi commands, but not all of them. For example: Creating a new Channelstrip and so on.
I tried a few things to check, how the logic remote communicates to mainstage. I'm sure that it's the OSC protocol. I tried to monitor the different commands, the logic remote sends through OSC with wireshark. But I didn't have any success.
Is anybody up to help me? If I get this running I will for sure put the documents to rebuild this controller online and available for everybody.
The VX77 had a few nice functions like scrolling through the set-list, and so on. This would be very handy!
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Okay,
in the meanwhile wireshark helped me to find out the first command, mainstage expects:
/mixer/volume/volume1 should adress the first fader in the mixer.
It's the same OSC mapping than in logic. Anyway... by adding a fader to my iphone via touchOSC and assigning this adress to the fader, nothing happens inside mainstage or logic...

  • Cisco 5760 controller in centralized mode supports 4404 controller as anchor controller?

    Hello All,
I have a cisco 5760 controller running in centralized mode. I want to configure one 4404 controller as anchor controller to work with the 5760 controller. Is this supported?.
    Thanks in advance
    Shabeeb

    No, It is not supported.
You cannot have a mobility peer with 5760 unless you enable "new mobility" on its peer . In CUWN products this is supported in 5508/WiSM2/8510 on specific codes. In current supported codes it has to be 7.6.x or 8.x.
As you know 4400 only supported upto 7.0.x code. So new mobility is not supported, hence you cannot peer with CA products.
In case if you have a "new mobility" supported WLC, here how you configure it

  • Hardware controller for Motion

I am looking to use a hardware controller with Motion (MIDI or other). What I want to be able to do is globally assign certain parameters to hardware knobs/encoders/sliders. For instance, I want to assign X-position to one slider and have it affect the clip or clips i have selected. Select a different clip and the slider affects X-positioning of that clip only.
I am familiar with assigning parameter controls to MIDI devices, but from what I can see it limits MIDI control to a single clip and if I want to control the same parameter for a different clip, I would need to copy the MIDI behavior to that clip and disable the MIDI behavior for the first clip.
Is there any way to accomplish what I want in Motion, either via MIDI or a different kind of controller?

I refer you to the manual ([from within Motion 5] Help Menu > Motion 5 Help). Once the manual opens, search MIDI. You'll end up on the Parameter behaviors page, but there is a link directly to the section on MIDI in the list.
Basically, you can use just about any kind of MIDI controller (synth, etc...). Motion can be set up for Note, Control, and Learning (so basically, Motion will respond to any kind of midi message your device will send and control the parameter in response to that message accordingly.)
To use the same message for multiple parameters, try Option-click-drag (to duplicate) the MIDI parameter behavior onto the other layer that needs the same parameter. (Check to make sure the Apply To: is set correctly; and also the ID of the MIDI control matches the original.) The documentation doesn't note any restrictions for the number of objects an identical behavior is applied to.
If you run into trouble with Motion not responding to the same midi messages over multiple parameters over multiple layers/objects, then use the Link behavior on the duplicates and link to the object parameters under MIDI control in the original layer/object.

I will repost the whole messaqge with the correct external URL's:
In  general, the Trustsec design and deployment guides address the specific  support for the various features of the 'whole' Cisco TS (and other  security) solution frameworks.  And then a drill-down (usually the  proper links are embedded) to the specifc feature, and then that feature  on a given device.  TS 2.1 defines the use of ISE or ACS5 as the policy  server, and confiugration examples for the platforms will include and  refer to them.

  • CISCO 350 Wireless LAN Module on Solaris

I am running Solaris 8 (6/00) for Intel platform with xFree86 version 4.0.3 on my laptop. My CISCO 350 PCMCIA Wireless LAN module work cannot be used nor detected in Solaris. Can anyone help me with that?

Are you running any other Vm's on the host server?
Are they working? Did you enable your BIOS to support VM?
Then with regards to the install make sure you follow the guide as it can get tricky.
I forgot to add Promiscuous personally. Make double check you Network Backing. I am not running a VM anymore - just recalling where I had issues.
