Cisco wastefulness : 3845 fan module

We had a fan fail on our 3845 edge router. No big deal; the other two fans kept the temperature easily within spec, and the module is a two minute hot swap. I opened a ticket, they sent me a replacement. Simple. (In fact, the router install docs note that the fans are essentially a "consumable" part, and will fail within a few years, depending on how hot and dusty your environment is.)
The fan module is actually the whole face plate of the router, blue plastic with a steel backing, status LEDs, and the three fans.
That is all fine. But, Cisco won't take the failed part back for refurbishment, which in this case would be simply to replace the fans!
The replacement part came with the standard Cisco return packaging: a sticker with an RMA #, a "manual" paper UPS label, and instructions to use their on-line tool ( www.cisco.com/go/logistics ). But, when I entered the RMA number, I got a pop-up saying it was invalid, and I should call Cisco Asset Recovery, whose 800 number is also on the sticker.
They told me that this part is not returnable; that the RMA is only to ID the shipment so they can confirm I got it. They told me to just throw it out. They would not provide a printable return shipping label.
I'd feel bad throwing out even the substantial cardboard and foam packaging of this part, let alone the assembled unit!
Hasn't Cisco heard that there is a general industry movement to cut down on electronic waste? With the removal of six screws, I could swap the failed fan out of this assembly and replace only the fan. I'm glad Cisco didn't ask me to do that level of repair, but I certainly think they should -- I'd assumed that the replacement unit I'd received was a return "refurbished" with new fans.
It seems a complete waste to just chuck out this whole thing.
Heck, even the tiny power supply bricks for the Aeronet APs have a little "no trash" sticker on them, with a link to http://cisco-returns.com . Why do they just dispose of router faceplace assemblies when the only issue is a fan that was expected to fail in the first place?
Anyone have a justification for this waste, or is it just Cisco being too big to care?
Attached photo shows the 3845 front piece, which is the fan assembly, and the package the replacement came in, which could be used to return this part, and then be reused. For comparason, the little black thing in front is an Aeronet 1131 power module, which has a Cisco Recycles sticker.

Stephen Bohrer wrote:It seems a complete waste to just chuck out this whole thing.
Cost effectiveness.
Basically, the fan unit is worth maybe, I dunno, $50 to manufacture? It'd cost Cisco probably $25 to pay the shipping back for the failed part, and then half an hour of someone's time to refurbish/clean/test the replacement unit - and, since they'd probably replace all three fans at the same time, you're effectively only sending them the mounting plate.
It's simply not cost effective.
HP have a similar process when it comes to failed memory modules - if they ship you a replacement memory module for, say, a laptop which has an issue, they don't bother having the dead one shipped back - it's simply not worth the shipping and handling costs to recover a part worth maybe $75.
It's harsh, and environmentally unsound, but Cisco is like most big companies - they're in it to make money, and wasting money like that simply isn't how John Chambers justifies his existence to the board!
Cheers.

  • Fan module failures in chassis

I have two chassis almost fully populated with B200M2 blades with the cahssis cabled up to 2 6120xp fabric interconnects.  I'm continually getting Fan Modules in both chassis's saying that they are degraded because a fan is inoperable.  This happens about 20 times a day.  They clear themselves almost immediately, but I'm wondering why this is occurring.  If it was normal operation for the fans to stop working than these shouldn't be faults.  Has anybody else experienced this?

Will be hard to diagnose without tech-support files, but the defect they are probably referring to is this one.
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCtl43716
There are some workarounds for this in the defect description.
There are also still working to fix this defect in 1.4.

Which Cisco's X2 10GE module is compatible with STM64 I-64.1 interface on transmission equipment?
It should be the X2-10GB-LR module, but Cisco's website does not say anything explicitly. For XFP modules, Cisco documentation state that they are compatible with STM-64 data rate.

I have bought a cisco 3845 with IDS module, but I think I also need a account to update the attack signature on IDS module periodly, who can tell me how?

    Hi,
To get signature updates you also need to purchase "Services for IPS" - your reseller should be able to get you a quote. Without this you won't be able to get either signatures or any support other than warranty. (because Smartnet has been replaced by Services for IPS for IPS devices.)

  • Cisco Prime Network Analysis Module (NAM) 5.1

Hi I have NAM-2 with software version 4.2 installed in my network and i am making very good use of these module for troublshooting,
I can run multiple captures files at local disk simultaneously and i can decode real time any capture file which is running.
I want to clarify following things,
I upgraded one of my NAM2 from 4.2 to 5.1 but i see following differences,
I cannnot do multiple captures at local disk simultaneously. it is not allowing me to create 2nd capture at localdisk while one is already running while in 4.2 version i can run multiple captures to local disk.
Its mean if i have 40G local disk, it's mean, it become reserved for one capture untill i stop and save there,
Also i cannot decode running capture file real time untill i stop.
I would apprecite if someone can clarify, whether it was enhancement in NAM 5.1?
    Configuring Capture Sessions
You can create up to ten capture sessions, and only one capture session per disk (local or external).
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/network_analysis_module_software/5.0_1_T/user/guide/capting.html#wp1252570

NAM 5.x removes the ability to perform multiple captures to a single local disk because that results in unreliable capture behavior (packets may or may not be dropped depending on whether the disk can keep up with the data rate).
You should still be able to decode memory captures while running. For disk captures, the capture file must not be in use (i.e., for a multi-file capture, you can decode any file other than the one currently being written to).

  • Cisco 887 and wireless module

    Hello there
I recently bought a cisco 887w and i'm having problem with wireless. The question is: is there any way to disable the very VERY annoying wlan-ap0 interface to boot from the main cisco IOS? Couln't find anything related with this over the internet :( I do really want to use dot11radio 0 from main router interface just like on my old cisco 877. Any help?

Nicolas thank you for your answer,
Yes, i did notice that c887w has a real ap inside. That's not too much flexible for me for the main reason that this is not intergrated like c877w as i thought. This has many disadvantages for me like i have to keep 2 different configurations, i have to login by typing service-module wlan-ap0 blah blah blah, two different managment IPs and so on. Dissapointed... but i'll get used to it : ) Fortunately they didn't do the same thing on fastethernet interface module..LOL! Hopefully on next IOS releases they do include an option to use dot11radio from main cisco IOS.
I'll have my time with this now.. I'll keep searching the cisco.com for a suitable config for me. If you have any tip for wireless bridging with the main BVIs on the router interface i'd apprieciate that : )
And for last something off topic... i noticed (not sure) that weighted early random detection (WRED.. QoS) is not supported. Is that true?
    TX!!!

    Hi,
You can use any SNMP tool to monitor CSM using SNMP MIBS.The Cisco CSM supports two Read Only MIBs: CISCO-SLB-MIB and CISCO-SLB-EXT-MIB, which are available at  ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/.
Traps can be sent based on real server, virtual server, and fault tolerant state changes. This is an old product and not much options are available SNMP wise.
While searching more related to this TOPIC i found a similar discussion. Kindly go through it and see if it helps you.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2024621
The CSM also allows you to confiure TCP scripts for HM and other particular tasks. Please have a look at the link below for details regarding the scripts:
