Cisco Wireless AP radio interface shutdown/Operation Status Down
Hi,
I am trying to troubleshoot the cause of the wireless AP 1142 radio shutdown; I was wondering where may be a good place to start on it/possibility of the radio shutting down. Once the radio is shown as down; I would just need to re-enable (disable/enable) it and the status changes to up status. I have attached a screen catpure of the radio interface showning down.
The AP radios shutting down is intermittent; some APs has their "A/N" radio interface shutdown while others has their "G/N" radio interface shutdown. Not too sure what may most likely be causing it to shutdown?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.
Do you have controller ?? if yes then posts out put of sh sysinfo commad.
Paste the output of sh version command from AP.
Also check:
1. Choose Wireless > 802.11a/n or 802.11b/g/n > Network
Select the 802.11a (or 802.11b/g) Network Status check box to enable the 802.11a or 802.11b/g band.
2. Wireless > Access Points > All APs then click on specific AP and make sure admin status is enable.

Cisco 1142AP Autonomous - Radio interface constantly reset and provides crash file
Hello All,
We have 10 Cisco 1142 Access Points currently configured as Autonomous and I'm experiecing very unusual behavior with the 2.4GHz radio interfaces on each of them. The IOS firmware is 15.2.2JB and they're connected to Cisco 2960 PoE switches. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem however it is service impacting and looks bad on me since I don't have a solution for it. One potential fix could be to upgrade the firmware to 15.2.4 but I'm sure if it is a firmware problem. Any advice would help. Here's an excerpt from the AP log:

HTH,
Steve -
HI,
I recently bought a Cisco 2504 Wireless Controller and a couple of access points (Cisco 1600 Series). Initially the controller had the 7.0.x.x firmware and from what i read on Cisco website it seems that this version is incompatible with my access points, so I updated the firmware on the controller to the latest version (7.4.110.0.). The access points were intially autonomous, so I installed the latest conversion to lightweight iOS image (ap1g2-rcvk9w8-tar.152-4.JA1). All work beautiful and I was happy until i discovered that after the acces points succesfully join the controller the radio interfaces won't come up. On the controller i get the following messages:
AP's Interface:1(802.11a) Operation State Down: Base Radio MAC:7c:95:f3:6c:c6:30 Cause=Unknown Reset Status:NA
AP's Interface:0(802.11b) Operation State Down: Base Radio MAC:7c:95:f3:6c:c6:30 Cause=Unknown Reset Status:NA
And here's what the acces point displays in logging mode:

I must metion that all settings on the controller are fine (the access points interfaces are set to enable), but they just don't want to come up. I'm completely baffled by this problem and I don't know what to do next ? Can someone explain what's happeining ?
PS: The access point are powered by their standard AC-DC power supply (not over PoE).Thanks for replies! One of the first thing that I did was to configure a NTP server, so the controller is time synchronized. Aslo I manually enable each radio interface.

Hi All,
When we tried connecting ap, its registering to the WLC 5508 with version 7.6.120.0. But it shows operational status as DOWN in WLC and blinking in red, green continuously. If i admin disable it, then it is coming UP and instantly goes DOWN.
Any Suggestion.see whether you have correct country code configured on your WLC & connected AP is in the right regulatory domain.

I just setup a new lan controller and registered some AP's successfully, however the AP's are not broading the SSID's and I noticed that their operational state is down.
Why is it down and I do I bring them back up?
From the controller I can see the AP's are all enabled.

3750 Integrated WirelessLAN Controller: Operational Status:resetting
Hi there!
A customer has a WS-C3750G-24WS-S50 WLC-Controller with exactly 50 APs. But those 50 Accesspoints are never completely registered to the WLC. Mostly there are 48-49 accesspoints registered but never 50.
The WLC is losing them randomly. It is never losing the same Ap. When looking via GUI it says "All APs 50" , "Total 49".
First of all I thought that I have the following problem:
The 4402-50 controller supports a maximum of 50 access points and has two ports. To support the maximum number of access points, you would need to create two AP-manager interfaces (see Figure 3-15) because a 4400 series controller can support only 48 access points on one port.
But this is not for the 3750 Integrated WirelessLAN Controller, because you have LAG enabled by default and you cannot change this. Therfore you are not able to create a second AP-Manager interface.
So let´s forget about this.
Then I tried some things on CLI an I noticed the following:
sw-mr-01-01#sh platform wireless-controller 6
Wireless Controller in Switch 6
Operational Status of the Controller : resetting
Service VLAN : 4095
Service Port Mac Address : 0025.8420.8e8f
Service IP Address : 127.0.1.6
Management IP Address : 192.168.150.220
Management VLAN : 0
Software Version : 5.2.193.0
Keepalive Version(controller/switch) : 1/1
Keepalives Missed : 16
Controller accepts http/https : 0/1
Controller's Status Line : up
Watchdog resets of Controller : 1
Controller resets total : 0
Unacknowledged control messages : 27
I guess it is not normal that the status is "resetting" although the WLC is running. I can work on GUI and CLI, so it is not really "resetting"
According to the Config Guide status should be "operational".
Is this maybe my problem? The customer is not able to do a good WIPT because the WLC is maybe resetting somehow internaly or something like this.
In traps I got every minute "Lost heartbeat with supervisor" which normaly should be solved in earlier releases. I have 6.0.199.4
HELP!!!
Thanks in advance.Ok.
1) Assing an IP address for a subnet you are sure you don´t use. for example 192.168.200.5 /24; GW 192.168.200.1 (via WLC GUI).
2) I suppose (because I have not configured any 3750 WLC) that the service port uses the vlan ID 4095 (This is I saw in any capture). then you have to create a int vlan 4095 in the Switch and assing the GW ip address of your WLC service-port.
3) Ping to verify conectivity between devices.
I´m suppose you have the service port via DHCP (it could be the reason you have an IP 0.0.0.0), this is not a best practice; Cisco recommends that assing an IP to this interface and never let to DHCP, specially if you don´t have any dhcp server in this VLAN.
Good Luck and sorry for my english.
Best Regards. -
How to change operational status of a WLC-connected AP?
Hello everybody.
I'm noticing two of my 30+ APs having the 802.11a radio with "Operational Status = DOWN". The Admin Status is ENABLED, but I don't know where to act to put the op. stat. UP!
WLC is running 7.5.102.0, as well as the APs. The affected ones are 3502 models.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks and regards,

But again, the errors are showing up on PI, so you need to see if the error is also being shown on the WLC or not as it can be an issue with PI.

We found that there are many events “%DOT11-4-MAXRETRIES: Packet to client reached max retries, removing the client” logged on 5/F and 6/F AP.

Operational Status Unknown on Cisco WiSM
Hello,
I have a pair of WiSM 2's managing our wireless AP's but i have a couple of access points that show their operational status as unknown on one controller but are happily working away on the other at the same time. Some settings are missing eg IOS ver and Regulatory Domains when viewing the info on this controller for that particular AP almost as if it failed during its initial setup?.
How can i remove it from the database on this controller?
Thanks,
MatA bit of further info, i've tried to force the ap to associate with the controller where its already in an unknown state and seen this

802.11a/n Radios 20
802.11b/g/n Radios 19
So I compared and found the AP which had only 802.11a/n Radio. SSH-d to the AP and sh ver:
1 Gigabit Ethernet interface
1 802.11 Radio(s)
and if I try to configure the radio interface:
apname(config)#interface dot11Radio ?
<0-1> Dot11Radio interface number
apname(config)#interface dot11Radio 0?
. : <0-1>
apname(config)#interface dot11Radio 0 ?
% Unrecognized command
apnameconfig)#interface dot11Radio 1 ?
<cr>
So as you can see dot11Radio 0 is gone. I've tried rebooting the AP with no success. I'm thinking there is a hardware failure with the radio antenna.
Has anyone experienced this kind of problem? What could be the cause?
Thanks,
DelgeeConverted to autonomous, upgraded bootstrap:
ROM: Bootstrap program is C1140 boot loader
BOOTLDR: C1140 Boot Loader (C1140-BOOT-M) Version 12.4(23c)JA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Converted back to lightweight and the problem is still same:
APxxxx.xxxx.xxxx#sh ip int br
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
Dot11Radio1 unassigned NO unset up up
GigabitEthernet0 x.x.x.x YES DHCP up up
LWAPP image version 7.0.98.0
1 Gigabit Ethernet interface
1 802.11 Radio(s)
Guess the only option left is to get it replaced under its warranty. -
Hi
I have a cisco wireless AP AIR-LAP1242G-E-K9
When I plug the network cable into the back this lights come on and change colour.
Does anyone know what the lights mean when they change colour?
Thanks
RegardsHi Jayesh,
Color change can be due to many reasons
Status LED indicates operating state, association status, error/warning condition, boot sequence, and maintenance status.
Ethernet LED indicates status of activity over the Ethernet.
Radio LED indicates status of activity over the radio.

Radio interface need to be disabled when antenna is not present?
I have been informed within a training class that the radio interface of an access point should be disabled when an antenna is not present. The reason given was that it would protect the radio from being adversely affected (potetnial for irreparable conditions). Question: 1) Is this true? 2) If so, where can I find supporting documentation on CCO? (I have not been able to find corroboratory information.)
Hi Vincent,
Here is a doc that speaks to this issue ( I don't see this causing irreparable damage but, better safe than sorry :)
Q. If you operate the radio but do not attach the antenna, can you damage the radio?
A. Some radio equipment manufacturers specifically warn against the operation of radios without the attachment of the antenna. Operation without the antenna can damage the transmitter. Most pieces of amateur or commercial radio equipment carry this warning because the equipment operates at a much higher transmitter power. A failure to use a proper antenna or load causes a reflected wave standing wave ratio (SWR) that can damage the final amplifier stage. This final amplifier stage is the power amplifier (PA).
For Cisco Aironet equipment, the transmitter power output is 100 milliwatts (mW) for the 350 Series and 30 mW for the 340 Series. Damage is unlikely, but possible. If you need to run the devices without antennae, turn the transmitter power down to 1.5 mW. Also, you can use a 50/52 ohm dummy load (attenuator) to be safe.
From this good Q & A doc;

Hope this helps!

My client bought 10 AIR-LAP1522AGs and a 4402 controller. They want to use them in pairs to establish 5 x wireless bridges. I have configied the controller and have added all the APs into the controller as either RAPs or MAPs.
I cannot figure out how to turn on the radios. I have downloaded several Cisco docs but am unable to find the answer to this seemingly simple question.
JeffSo without the radios up, does this mean you primed the MAPs to join over ethernet interface? Otherwise, for them to be joined, the radios would need to be up..
Anyhow, if the radios are all down, it sounds like you may have 802.11a or 802.11b/g Globally Disabled (GUI > Wireless > 802.11a > network > enable 802.11a)...........................
Other than that, I suppose your AP Admin mode could be Disabled instead (GUI > Wireless) APs each have an admin status....
Or is the problem not that the radios are "off" but that something isn't working on them...?
