Cisco WLC design over 2 sites

Hi all
we are looking to deploy 2 wireless controllers, 1 in each of our offices.
We want the site AP's to fail over to the other controller should one of them go down.
My question is, the LAN ip adressing should be different on each site, so they can break out of there local internet etc.
Will this be OK ?
do we have to configure the AP's in HREAP ? So the vlans can break out on the local LAN?
also I gather we would have to have 2 AP groups one per site ?
cheers
Carl

Carl,
If you're going to put WLC in both sites, you need to do a financial review as well as technical.
I don't usually see a WLC fail at the remote end unless the power supply blows up, however, I've seen a lot of cases when the WAN link goes down. This is why I'm asking you to make a financial review. If you plan to move the APs back-and-forth, then you'll need to shell out licenses of both units.
But you also need to consider that if you want to run H-REAP and your WAN link goes down, then the AP needs to have a local authentication at the site to get H-REAP to work fine. You should be asking the bean counters which is cheaper: Have one local authentication server at each site or increase the licenses of the WLC to accommodate HA?

Hi my name is Ivan i have a trouble perhaps could you help me...
I have two cisco wlc 5508. I wan to install them in two differents site. One WLC in the site A and the another WLC in the site B.
Site B is the WAN of the site A. The site A is the headquarter.
But i need to configure them in High Availability. For example if the Cisco WLC in site A goes down, the ap's have to registered in the WLC of the site B.
Then the traffic LWAPP have to pass over the WAN between site A to site B.
I have to configure two cisco wlc in HA over a WAN . Please could help me to do this?. Is ok configure the roamming L3 intercontroller?
    Thanks for your answers

    Ivan,
    AP'S - WLC - SITE A ----WAN-----WLC - SITE B - AP'S

Hi Surendra thanks for yoru answer.
Surendra, if the ap in the site B (in the WAN) goes down then the traffic lwapp have to pass over the wan,
what will should i do to ensure access point can register on to the cisco wlc in the WAN, moreover to configure the mobility groups in both wireless lan controllers?
or i only have to configure in the wlc the mobility groups? Could you explain me what things have i to do to ensure this
SITE A - (ACCESS POINT M)  - LWAPP -----PASS OVER WAN---- SITE B - CISCO WLC - (ACCESS POINT M)

  • Cisco WLC AP count over SNMP

    Hi,
Is it possible to monitore a quantity of AP on Cisco WLC and quantity of wireless clients?
I was found only list of AP names over snmp...
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, Ralf
    If not late
I use script directly in monitoring system
    main ()
    VALUE=`snmpwalk -v 2c -c xxxCommunityxxx X.X.X.X 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.513.1.1.1.1.2 | wc -l`

    echo "Data:Count"
    echo "Count\t$VALUE"
    exit 0

  • Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users

Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users
I've been given a fantastic "opportunity" by my boss to use our existing wireless infrastructure to provide internet access to potentially upto 2000 VIP guests arriving with BYOD devices, in a very densely populated area for a 3 day event. We are talking an area of approx 200m x 15m. Think of it as an awards ceremony/concert. The solution will also be mobile so we will be using internet breakout from different telcos as it will move to approx 20 countries. The area is also incredibly densely populated with other wifi APs. I did a brief site survey and AirMagnet could detect over 2500 other 'rogue' APs from where I was stood! I hope CleanAir works!
We need a simple authentication method for them to connect with zero admin from our side. We don't want to just offer up a rolling daily PSK as that's a bit amateur and we don't really want the VIP guests sharing the PSK with others during their stay. Ideally they could self-provision by providing an email address.
I know the WLC can handle webauth for local users but I don't think it scales very well. ie I don't think I can offer the account to several hundred people.
Cisco ISE looks a very expansive (and expensive) product but I don't think we need all it's capabilities (do I?). It would be nice to just ask a potential user for their email address and grant them access and email them next year. I've seen Cisco NAC but that looks over the top too for just guest users who will only be accessing a shared internet connection.
I've seen 3rd party supposed software solutions from Kiosk Antamedia etc do they work with Cisco Enterprise WLC solutions?
We'd like to limit users to a certain (low) bandwidth and block (say) torrent traffic to keep the general user experience worthwhile.
Does anybody have any case study documents or experience of such a project? As well as the authentication it's how well the APs will handle the dense potential number of clients trying to connect in such a confined space.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated from the knowledgeable community.
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Rasika,
We are having WLC 5508 model with software version running 7.4.121.0. AP Models are AIR-CAP2602I.
Normally our WAN links are good even while the issue pertains. We are connected to remote offices over ipsec site to site vpn for WAN. The link latency in WLC between the AP and the controller shows  <1ms.
currently the Guest network is using WPA2-PSK auth given in the controller. we are trying to find a option to make the Guest wireless auth local to the office, and see if this solves the problem.
    any suggestions,
    Thank you,
    Arjun

  • Master Secondary Cisco WLC environment

I've inherited 2 Cisco wireless WLC's recently.. we have what we consider our Master Cisco WLC 5508 controller, and a 2504 WLC at our HQ.   Bottom line, these WLC's are set as individual master controllers and their respective AP's connect to each of their respective controllers.  The difference we have is the APs and locations which connect to our master wlc at our data center, guest access works fine.  The AP's that connect to our WLC 2504, do not have an Internet POP so today, employee wireless access is working, but I cannot get them guest access as it is not connected in any way to the master in our data center.   I've come over from a Aruba environment where we have a master/local environment and it worked perfectly.   Is this design in a Cisco WLC environment possible ?  Thanks, Dan

You have two different model controllers and there is no master local. In the Cisco side you set the primary, secondary and or tertiary controller. What you need to do is to make sure that the VIP is the same and that each controller is configured in the others mobility group.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/4400-series-wireless-lan-controllers/107188-mobility-groups-faq.html
Then you can anchor the SSID to the WLC in the data center. That's how you can get this to work.

  • Cisco WLC 5508 - NPS Radius

    Cisco WLC 5508
    Software Version: 7.4.100.0
    Windows Server 2008R2
I've got everything setup on the Windows Server 2008 side of things (certificates, radius clients, etc)
I added the radius server on the WLC, and configured a new WLAN to use it.
Both are on the same subnet.
When trying to conect to the WLAN it kept failing.  I installed wireshark on the server to monitor the radius traffic, and to my surprise there was no radius traffic showing up on the server.  The radius statistics on the WLC are at 0 as well, so it's like the WLC isn't even attempting Radius.
I reverified that the server was enabled on both the security tab and the WLAN itself on the WLC.  Rebooted the controller and the server, all to no avail.  I used a radius test client, and can successfully send radius commands to the server using that utility.
Frustrated, I just kept trying to reconnect on my wireless device, and after about the 15th try, finally I saw radius activity on wireshark.  It rejected my access, but at least I saw activity.  It also registerd radius statistcs on the WLC as well.
So now if I keep trying to connect repeatedly, about every dozen or so times the WLC actually will send a radius request to the server.
What in the world is going on here?

I do have local management users on the controller.
Some hours later I added the option of authenticating management users, for the NPS server. Then logged inn to the management GUI using NPS radius, worked just fine.
However, these commands have been useful to me several times, to make sure unsuccessful requests appear in the Windows Event log:
    auditpol /get /subcategory:"Network Policy Server"
If it shows ‘No auditing’ or just "Success", you can run this command to enable it:
    auditpol /set /subcategory:"Network Policy Server" /success:enable /failure:enable
So now I know that the NPS radius server works, for management access. I will go to the customer's site some other day to test it for 802.1x authentication. If not, I'll do some debugging to decide wihich to blame - the WLC or NPS.

  • WLC 5508 and remote site (DMVPN) Access Points

    Hi All,
We just purchased a WLC 5508 and would like to know if it will control remote VPN site Access Points.  Here are the details:
The 5508 will live at our home office.  We have multiple remote sites that are connected via Cisco's DMVPN.  Each site has one Cisco 1131 Access Point hanging off of either a Cisco 1841 or a 2811 that is using DMVPN back to the home office 2811.  Can the 5508 manage the remote Access Points?
    Thanks for your help guys!

    Dear Friends,
One of my client want to encrypt data over the wireless. I have cisco WLC 2504 IOS Version 7.2.0.0.
Please help me on this. I think by-default data encrypt is enable. If not so how can I enable it. If I enable it is there any impact to my wireless user's.
    Please help me out .....
    Thanks & Regards,

    Impact:
2500, WiSM2, WLC2—These platforms by default will not contain DTLS. To turn on data DTLS, you must install a license. These platforms will have a single image with data DTLS turned off. To use data DTLS you will need to have a license.

  • Bonjour Discovery browser and cisco WLC mDNS

    Hello
I'm using a Bonjour Discovery browser on an iPad to see if I can check what Bonjour services are available on a cisco 2504 running code 7.5.102.0. WLC is configured as per cisco documentation for mdns:
    Multicast disabled on WLC
wired vlan (with bonjour services) is trunked to WLC
mdns profile configured and bonjour services are visible on WLC
    mdns profile applied to WLAN
when i connect an ipad to the wlan and start the browser, no services appear (2 are visible on the WLC). Debug on the WLC shows the following (where XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX is the iPad mac)
*Bonjour_Msg_Task: Nov 04 10:51:06.674: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX Failed to updated data to Service Provider DB
    *Bonjour_Msg_Task: Nov 04 10:51:12.798: processBonjourPacket : 935 Queried service-string : _dns-sd._udp.local. is not configured in MSAL-DB
Is it possible to get Bonjour Discovery browser working with cisco WLC?

I have used Avahi when I have had deployments that were FlexConnect and the site had multiple subnets for Apple TV's and or the devices that would be using the Apple TV, printers, etc.  Avahi is free and my customers would spin this up on an available PC or laptop and connect it to the network.
    mDNS AP
    1. This feature enhancement allow controllers to have the visibility of wired service providers which are on VLANs that are not visible to the controller.
    2. User configuration is required to configure APs as mDNS AP. This configuration allows AP to forward mDNS packets to WLC.
    3. VLAN's visibility at WLC is achieved by APs forwarding the mDNS advertisements to controllers. The mDNS packet between AP and controller are forwarded in CAPWAP data tunnel similar to mDNS packets from wireless client.
    4. APs can either be in access or trunk mode to learn the mDNS packets from wired side and forward it to the controller.
    5. This  configuration also allows the user to specify the VLANs from which the  AP should snoop the mDNS advertisements from wired side. The maximum  number of VLANs that AP can snoop is 10.
    6. If the AP is in access mode, the user should NOT configure any VLANs for AP to snoop.
AP will send untagged packets when a query  is to be sent. When an mDNS advertisement is received by mDNS AP, VLAN  information is not passed to the controller. Hence the service provider's VLAN, learnt via mDNS AP's access VLAN will be maintained as 0 in the controller.
    7. If  the AP is in trunk mode, then the user has to configure the VLAN on the  controller on which AP would snoop & forward the mDNS packets. The  native VLAN snooping is enabled by default when mDNS AP is enabled. AP will send VLAN information as 0 for packets snooped on native VLAN.
    8. This feature is supported on local and monitor mode AP, and not on Flexconnect mode APs.
    9. If a mDNS AP joins/resets (or) joins the same/another controller, the behavior is as follows:
    a. If global snooping is disabled on the controller, then a payload will be sent to AP to disable mDNS snooping.
    b. If global snooping is enabled on the controller, then configuration of the AP previous to reset/join procedure will be retained.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • WLC Redundancy over L3 link

    Hi All,
Is it possible to deploy WLC redundancy over L3 link???
In our scenario we have 2 controllers located in 2 different sites, the link between the site is L3. AP's are deployed across four other locations, two are coming to site 1 and rest two are coming to site 2 . How can i make redundancy on this setup , Please advice
    Controller is 4404 and AP's are 1231G series .
    Regards
    Aslam ...

What is your link between each site? Also, I suppose your ap's are running in H-REAP mode? If you don't have enough bandwidth, then you shouldn't try it. You can always try to move the ap's to either wlc and see if users have any issues or not, before you try to deploy redundancy in this matter.

  • WLC Design

    Hello,
I want to install a WLC controller on the central site and 50 Access Point on the remote site.
I have 10 remote site with 5 Access Point per site.
Each remote site is connected to the central site with lan to lan VPN (ASA 5510 at the central and ASA 5505 at the remote site).
    1) the WLC must manage Different SSID and Network, is it working ?
    2) Is there a lot of traffic between the Access Point and the WLC controler ? ASA 5510 is connected with Internet SDSL 2 Mb and each ASA 5505 with Internet ADSL 8 Mb (only 500 Ko max for upload)
    Thanks for your help

What you need to do is setup the AP's in H-REAP mode and not local. This way the AP is locally switched and not have to tunnel the traffic back to the WLC. Anytime you have a centrally managed WLC and multiple remote sites, H-REAP should be used unless you have a big backbone back to the central site.

  • Cisco WLC 5760

    Hi All,
I have Cisco WLC 5760 at my company. I see some document that CISCO WLC 5760 not support FlexConnect. What i want is AP still function when Controller down. Any feature that WLC can do that?
    Thanks in advances.

5760 Access Point Stateful Switch Over (AP SSO) Overview
IOS XE 3.3 SE release for Cisco 5700 Series Wireless Controller introduces 1:1 Active-Standby redundancy model for HA with the CT5760 controllers using the StackWise-480 technology. HA in Cisco 5700 Series Wireless Controller is enabled using Cisco StackWise-480 technology. StackWise-480 identifies active and standby members in the stack as per the Cisco IOS Software SSO technology. All the control plane activities are centralized and synchronized between the active and standby units. The Active Controller centrally manages all the control and management communication. The network control data traffic is transparently switched from the standby unit to the active unit for centralized processing. The 12 ports of the CT5760 HA redundant pair can be connected to the infrastructure network either through a single switch or two switches.
Bulk and Incremental configuration is synced between the two controllers at run-time and both controllers share the same IP address on the management interface. The CAPWAP state of the Access Points that are in Run State is also synched from the active WLC to the Hot-Standby WLC allowing the Access Points to be state-fully switched over when the Active WLC fails. The APs do not go to the Discovery state when Active WLC fails, and Standby WLC takes over as the Active WLC to serve the network.

  • Designing a Web Site

Hey i am new at this so i hope so that you can give me some advice.I liked to study Flash many years ago and i finally started 5 months ago ,i was searching on internet flash website and i was stunned what you can do with flash. But now i don't know where to start, what to learn first. And how the hell you can create proffesional site with all that animation on it etc?? Like these sites http://www.joeldelane.com/blog/?p=816

Well the first thing you need to know is It is going to take alot more then flash. I view the sites your referred to and have been programming in actionscript, php, html, JavaScript, CSS, etc... blah blah for ever lol. Anyway I was a designer turned developer turned webmaster and now owner of my own professional design firm. Here is what you are looking at: one those graphics are design professionally by a graphic designer somewhere.. most likely using fireworks, photoshop, illustrator etc.. etc.. then are turned over to a web designer whom will work with the graphic designer on the correct layout of the site and the things that need to move and how they need to move. Then the image is modified heavily with multiple images and alot of motion tweening etc which is done by the web designer in Flash Professional CS whatever or there flash studio software. Then you have a designer and a developer working hand in hand adding functionality behind the seens using actionscript the underlying language of Flash. Then once they have everything worked out the three basically completely go over the site together and make alterations and changes as needed. E.G. Your amazing Flash Site. I don't know many maybe a handful of people who can do it all thereselves I know the difficulties between all three which is entirely a different job and skillset. The real kicker is the people who can do it alone all by themselves never seldom do because of the shear amount of time it takes them on the project and almost always outsources some of the work. All in all the bottom line is that the site quickly becomes a biscuit to much time and the cost becomes to high company's or people can get sites cheaper from studios who divide the work and cut the time in half.
So you need to look at your skillsets and decide...
Web Designers - Generally design visually and have a great knowledge of layout, and simple structuring languages.
Web Developers - Are generally crap with design and layout but have an excessive amount of coding ability and knowledge of various dynamic languages. And prefer to make things functional and happen not look good and not do alot.
Graphic Designer - Strictly  graphically inclined has an inept ability to design layouts and visual website representations in graphics software.
If you think you have all of the skills then I would suggest buying a membership to lynda.com and reference there online tutorials as well as there books and other books on flash. I will tell you having worked as all positions listed above I know 17 different languages in all and have designed on paper to digital and then to design studio and have worked on years worth of layouts and I personally build complete flash sites now but as far as the eye candy I would suggest focusing on the needs of the clients and not on candy. To much eye candy destroys a site and takes away from its purpose we have issued feedbacks in the past that showed clients are 82% more focused on userability and functionality then eye candy and aw.
i hope in someway that I have helped you find your way and good luck If you want it bad enough and really want to dedicate your life to it then there is no doubt you will do fine.

  • HA in Cisco WLC

    Hi friends,
I am planning to have a wireless environment for a corporate company. I would like to have a Cisco wireless LAN controller 2100 series and 15 numbers of cisco aironet 1142 n access point. Since wireless is gonna be a very important medium for the premises, I am planning to have high availability for the 2100 series WLC.
With this scenario I am having the following of queries?
    1. Does high availability is supported with WLC 2100 series or need to go for an hihger end WLC's? It would be great if I am guided with some documents on this?
    2. My wired switching infrastructure at the core is running with GLBP. Can I connect the both WLC in each switch in an dual home architecture?
    3. Is there any pre-requistes for doing the high availability for the WLc's?
    4. Yet another company that is close to me do have the same architecture for wireless infrastructure, except that they have cisco WLC as 5508 and Cisco aironet 1142n access point. All the end points NIC adapters that they have support a/b/g standard. But with an n series they continously report low signal strength, the reason for this still unknown?
But the tech documents of 'n' series access point claims that they support, 300Mbps within 33 feet and 200 Mbps within 66 feet.
They are having 2 nos of Cisco 1142n access point for every 30 feet but still they are facing low signal strength. Also there workspace are all cubicles and without any interference.
It would be great if I am guided on this issue also?

    Hi Karthik,
You can build this HA solution based on the 2100 controllers. And if you want HA for 15 access points you need two 2125 controllers. But I will suggest that you consider the 5508 controller since that is a more future proof hardware and will give you more features that you might want to use such as Office Extend.
Right now there is a bundle available for one 5508 with 10 x AIR-LAP1142 and the GPL price for that bundle is USD 31,424. And you should consider if you need the HA solution or if you are covered by the onsite support. In the product list below I have used the regulatory domain E and power cable for Europe. Make sure that you get this correct for your country. This is a limited offer ending August 1st 2010. You also need the additional 5 access points or more if you want Office Extend.
