-ck kernel problem: fglrx broken
I just updated my Arch64 system to 0.8 (Voodoo); kernel went from 2.6.18ck to 2.6.19ck, and fglrx(ck) from 8.29 to 8.32.
DRI is now broken (before it worked).
The real problem is that - I suppose - I can't downgrade fgrlx without downgrading also the kernel and all modules.
I have an ATI x1100 card.
EDIT: it works with stock arch kernel 2.6.19 so it is probably a ck kernel issue with fglrx that has to be addressed
EDIT 2:
# dmesg | grep 'fglrx'
fglrx: Unknown symbol register_ioctl32_conversion
fglrx: Unknown symbol unregister_ioctl32_conversion
fglrx: Unknown symbol register_ioctl32_conversion
fglrx: Unknown symbol unregister_ioctl32_conversion
It apparently fails to load the module in the ck kernel.
Same problem on my ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A: since Arch has updated the kernel from version 3.9 to version 3.10, the display shuts off after the early stages of booting.
I tried several solutions found on the internet (kernel parameters, mkinitcpio.conf, ...), and there are only two that work for me:
1. Add "i915.modeset=0" or "nomodeset" kernel parameters, but then X11 doesn't work anymore as it now depends on KMS
2. Downgrade the kernel to a previous version (3.9.9) and lock the linux and linux-headers packages (best current solution)...

[SOLVED] Xorg problem: fglrx, startx & Xorg -configure
Hi,
On a HP 8510p notebook (Core 2 Duo, AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600)
I have just installed Arch Linux, did a system update (pacman -Syu), installed the catalyst package, which depends on xorg-server, among others.
When I do a "Xorg -configure" it fails with a "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting". As I see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I don't get an (EE)/error. I just can' understand why the X server fails.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log - with no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Obs: When I do a "startx", with a custom and minimalist xorg.conf, my notebook stops to respond (doesn't function Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Alt-F2,3..., Ctrl-C... noting) and the screen is all black.
But first, I think it should work the "Xorg -configure"
Last edited by Claudiu2EE (2007-11-30 18:45:20)Hi!
I'll post some more information...
When I do "startx", like I said, it seems that X is starting, the display changes from grey to black and dark-grey again... but then I can't do nothing to exit, but to press the power button.
So, as no "hwd -x" (uses lshwd -> Segmentation fault) or "Xorg -configure" (Caught signal 11. Server aborting) works, I wrote a xorg.conf by 0, googleing around and inspiring me from the Arch Wiki.
I have no ~/.xinitrc (I have tried with one who had an exec xterm, but no success)
Package information:
xorg-server 1.4-5
xorg-xinit 1.0.7-1
xorg-twm 1.0.1-2
xterm 229-2
catalyst 7.11-1

Kernel problems and no installation CD with me
Hi,
I am experiencing kernel problems with my Mac Book Pro8.1 (OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8). Sometimes I need to restart my laptop, sometimes it does not start up, software updates do not work and I cannot start the laptop in the safe modus.
I will post the crash report here. Is there any expert that can tell me what causes the problem and a way to fix that?
The problem is, that I am living abroad at the moment and I do not have my installation CD with me.
Is there anything I can do?
Thank you so much,
Tabea

0x7ffHas anyone an idea what the problem might be?
Thanks a lot,
Tabea -
When rendering out HD video in multiple formats, I begin having computer problems. I have a brand new 17" Macbook Pro with 4gig Ram. Sometimes the ram fills up and the graphics card freaks out. Everything on my mac becomes garbled and I have to force it to shut down. I started closing and re-opening Motion periodically to solve that. Now I'm having a Kernel problem. When rendering a file that is only 30 seconds long and very simple, the CPU cycles start spiking. To the point where the computer freaks out. About a third of the way through the render it will render for 10 seconds, computer freezes for 10 seconds, render 10 seconds, and so on. When you quit Motion this continues. Even with the RAM flushed. It's very hard to save everything when the computer and mouse freeze in 10 second increments. Even with everything closed, the computer continues doing this and must be shut off by holding down the power button. I checked Activity monitor. Kernel_Task is at 2% CPU, then the computer freezes for exactly 10 seconds, then Kernel_Task is at 102% CPU for a second and back down. Something is freaking it out and causing it to use so many CPU cycles that it just craps out and even the mouse stops working. This happens on HD projects constantly. It makes a 5 minute render become an hour render. Plus, I have to reset after every render. Very frustrating.
There were a bunch of errors like this. I'll spare you all of them...
=====================================================================
Aug 12 22:59:03 dave-kosss-macbook-pro [0x0-0x22022].com.apple.motion[228]: 0 bytes NOT freed (0 blocks)

Aug 12 22:59:03 dave-kosss-macbook-pro [0x0-0x22022].com.apple.motion[228]: =====================================================================
But then after all that I also had this error in the system.log
Aug 12 23:39:56 dave-kosss-macbook-pro kernel[0]: (default pager): [KERNEL]: no space in available paging segments
I have no idea what it means, but since it came after the Motion errors and the time stamp was when the error occurred, I think this may be relevant. -
Repeated problem of broken link and unused files
Hi ,
I am using RH8.0.2
I have updated my RH8 to RH8.0.2 and then fix all broken link and did what was advised.i got result, everything was fine, I was a happy man. Today when i open the same project for updation, i found again plenty of broken links and unused file in the same project.
Is there any permanent solution of the problem of broken links and unused file or i have to fix it every time when i open my project?
Plz help!!!
Br,
RahulHi Rahul.
Two things. Firstly some of the paths you have in your project are very long. In the example you have given we are seeing less than half the path. This may not be the problem but it maybe in the future. Secondly, as Peter has suggested, the problem maybe related to source control. Do you use it? I have heard of instances where (e.g. .FPJ) files cause issues.

Kernel problem in brand new Macbook Air
I have been having kernel problems with my brand new computer. Two weeks ago I bought my computer and after 14 hours it began. Apple decided to switch my computer out for another that I got yesterday. And today the kernel problems began with this one...
It only happens when i´m connected to the internet at home but not at school. I have updated everything and tried to restart it and hold the shift button down and everything I found that could help me with this problem...

Can't start or "please shutdown" message, after ¿kernel problem? need help!
I'm new to mac world, just bought a mac book less than 1 month ago...
After Safari crashed, and also "force quit" crashed I've had to turn off the computer by pressing 6 secs the power button. After that, when I started, a "kernel problem" appeared. Dont know what it is... but then macbook did not started or started and in 10 minutes, a "black" message appeared telling me do manually shutdown, in many languages...
I've looked some post, but did not understand about those kernel problems... don't really know if my problem is about that... how to solve it??? some people posted their "panic.log" here is mine...

This is the infamous Kernel Panic. The common wisdom is that they are usually the result of hardware problems and so it's worth reseating the RAM. You can find out more on Dr Smoke's page here:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
However, some years ago I had a recurrent KP on an iBook which I eventually resolved by clearing out the OS X cache files using Panther (now Tiger!) Cache Cleaner. Download an evaluation version of TCC from here:
http://www.northernsoftworks.com/
If the KP is associated with just one program, I would also try finding its preferences file (look in /Library/Preferences) and dragging it to the trash. For safari, I'd also also execute Empty Cache and Reset Safari
Good luck

[Solved] ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300 Problem - fglrx not loading
I changed the currently unreliable GS 8600 nvidia card in my laptop to a compatible old ATI HD 2300 card from a similar model laptop but I can't get the Catalyst drivers to work with it. The open source driver xf86-video-ati works well with it for basic use, but is not so good for 3D. This card should work with an Amilo xi-2428 & has done for other people who have developed faulty nvidia cards.
I have the legacy driver installed from AUR (Catalyst-total-hd234k) and have enabled Vi0L0's [xorg112] server properly in pacman.conf & downgraded to Xorg-server 1.12. I also tried downgrading to Xorg-server 1.11 & reinstalling the drivers from AUR. Plus I have enabled and tried Vi0L0's [catalyst-hd234k] repo in place of the AUR package each time too. Made no difference. I've blacklisted radeon too.
When the laptop boots systemd-modules-load.service shows as failed.
$ sudo systemctl --failed
UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
systemd-modules-load.service loaded failed failed Load Kernel Modules
LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

Docs: man:systemd-modules-load.service(8)
man:modules-load.d(5)
Process: 121 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
It is only the fglrx module which fails to load:-
$ sudo journalctl -b _PID=121

Dec 19 15:29:57 Finnix systemd-modules-load[121]: Inserted module 'vboxnetflt'
I have no idea how to get fglrx to load & since it fails to load so early during boot I doubt the problem lies with my Xorg.conf. Likewise neither aticonfig or the ATI control center work.
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected
amdcccle just give this message
"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.
No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig."

Solved. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300 was based on an earlier design & was not really one of the HD 2*** cards, even tho it was released as one (HD 2*** cards are R600 series while the HD 2300 is based on the R500 generation). So the offical drivers for it were relegated to legacy in 2009 with AMD's Catalyst 9.3 release & are no longer supported. Pretty crappy considering the HD 2300 was only on the market from 2007.
To use the official catalyst drivers would require xorg 1.5.3 and kernel 2.6.29..... with no support for newer distros.
Using open source drivers, cannot remember all the packages but have listed some below in case it helps anyone:-
xf86-video-ati
ati-dri
lib32-ati-dri
libtxc_dxtn
lib32-libtxc_dxtn
mesa
lib32-mesa
No xorg.conf needed for it using kms, but can make a config file to tweak if you like in the xorg.conf.d directory called 20-radeon.conf

Carl9170 driver causes kernel problem
I am an arch linux newb, just switched from ubuntu. However I do know just enough about linux to screw stuff up.
So, I have a SMCWUSB-N2 (USB atheros wireless N). Don't remember the exact chipset, but I do know the carl9170 driver supports it. The default arch version of carl9170 worked, but with horrible speed and frequent disconnects. So I downloaded the latest compat-wireless, built, and installed it. Now when I plug in the adapter the light on it stays solid (normally blinks with activity) and nothing else happens. Dmesg prints the following when I plug it in:

I blacklisted the ar9170usb driver as the wiki suggests, yet I still have problems. Is this a kernel bug that I should report, or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!Have you installed the firmware? You can download it from here (http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170) and put it in /lib/firmware.

Spontaneous shut down and possible kernel problems?
Hi,
So I was using my macbook pro today (running OSX 10.8.2, bought spring 2010) and the screen froze. The screen image changed- it looked like someone ran thier fingers through a wet painting. I force restarted the computer with the power button and about 10 minutes later the computer shut down on it's own with no warning (I was typing and the screen went black.) I attempted to start the computer again by pressing the power button. The computer eventually turned on when I held the power button down. A black grey screen appeared and the computer made a plusing, low toned beeping noise. Since I was in a class, I was not able to determine the frequencey of the beeps (just trying to get it to turn off). I held down the power button and it eventually stopped after about 3 minutes.
I was able to turn on my computer after class and it has been running fine (if a bit slow) for the past hour. I checked the console log and the report for the restart and both cite "kernel panics" (i.e.
Kernel stack memory corruption detected"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.18.24/libkern/stack_protector.c:37).
I've been reading about kernel panics on the support community but I'm not sure what to do next to solve this issue. I had similar problems at the exact same time last week with the screen and shutting off but I attributed the forced shut down to low battery (the computer just turned off and then ran slowly for the rest of the day once I got it plugged in).
Thanks!Try a safe boot, hold the shift key and power up, this will take a little loner than normal, hold the shift till you see the progress bar. See if it works normal, if it does than it is more than likely some 3rd party software. Then restart normal and check your console for panics. That would be your isssue. You can also start holding command R and restoring from utililities. Back up before you do anything.

MSI NGTX 570 TF III OC Kernel problem
Hi,
Since last month my display driver nvidia windows kernel mode driver, version 335.23 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
Sometimes i can play games like bf3 or bf4, war thunder, etc.. but sometimes i cant play it keep freezing and bsod or reboot and some artfacts on the screen.
I'm getting crazy with this, searched online for answers but no luck at the moment, hope someone can help, thanks..
Best RegardsIve downloaded the driver 306.23 whql from guru3d and all working fine now ill keep testing.. if this is a software/driver issue nvidia and their partners should sort it out immediately, theres a lot of users with the same problem and probably the same cause and fix. A lot of driver versions and model versions but all regardless to the 3xx.xx software versions i will try to help n figure if it is a driver version issue.
thank you for your support best regards! -
This message is targetted towards people looking to purchase an HP Pavilion dv7 series of notebooks. Hopefully they are scanning these boards prior to purchase, something I (very) regretfully did not do.
My system: Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.60GHz, 8GB, ATI mobility radeon HD5650 1GB, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
Almost immediately, there were severe overheating problems. Even under normal use (1- 4% CPU, Word, Excel etc.) it became too hot on the left side to keep on my lap. My kids actually burned their hands on that part. I once used it on a table with a vinyl tablecloth. It actually melted the vinyl!
Running any CPU/GPU intensive software causes a shutdown due to overheating, a real nuiscance with playing games or watching video in HD. Just as a test, I ran one computationally intensive program overnight while I kept the machine in my freezer. Even then, it overheated and shutdown! (I have not overclocked; just running my software on the hardware as purchased).
Even in normal use, the fan runs very high, and is very noisy. It is so noisy that I cannot leave it on in my bedroom.
Finally, because of the positioning of the vent, I am certain that the intense heat weakens the left hinge. I am very careful with how I open lids, always with both hands on the lid. Within two months, the left hinge cracked. I argued extensively with HP, but they insisted that it was my fault, and I was charged for the fix.
I'm wondering whether the designers ever turned on (let alone stress tested) these units prior to selling this piece of !@#$.
Added bonus: within 4 months, the hard drive failed, though I can't pin that on HP. While the drive was getting replaced, I went out and bought an Acer. It had better specs than the HP, was cheaper, lighter, and even with the CPU at close to 100 percent, the heat is hardly noticable, and the fan is barely audible.
I bought HP because most of the scientific instruments in our labs is manufactured by HP, and it is truly high quality , high precision equipement, some of it running for over 25 years problem free. From that, I really trusted the HP name, I trusted that their PC division would have equal quality and standards. !#$% was I wrong! I'm glad they're getting out of the PC business.
The only reason I'm keeping this junk is because I took the extended warranty at the store, and under it, after three major repairs, they will get me a new notebook of equal or greater value. I can't wait for that inevitable third breakdown! The dv 7 eg 4012 is the biggest disapointment:
the hinge brakes, it has an overheating problem!!!
Be prepared to replace it after 12 months or pay the bill for the repairs, hundreds of dollars.
I purchased the laptop directly from the hp online store about a year and a half ago.
First of all I had to install the latest drivers because hp is not making sure it comes with up to date drivers.
To find out what the problem was I had to contact the costumer service about 6 times.
After about 12 months the laptop startet splitting at the left hinge. The HP Costumer Service looked at the photos and told me this, Quote: "We have received the attachment of broken hinges and find it is an user damage hence, the service of the Notebook would be done on chargeable basis."
Before you want to buy a hp laptop, please type into google: broken hinge hp laptop
And you will see hundreds of posts of disappointed costumers.
Even class action lawsuit have been taken out against them.
For me, this was the last time that I invested about a 1000 Euros( bought it in Europe) in a product which needs to be replaced after a year and a half.
Please stay away from this product,
except you have plenty of time and money to keep this machine alive. -
[SOLVED] System upgrade broke pm-resume (kernel problem?)
It now seems every other time I suspend to RAM, it fails to come back. I just get a blank screen, no backlight, with a completely unresponsive keyboard. At this point, the only thing I do that has any effect is a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. I had no problems before I upgraded on April 10. I didn't post this immediately because I wanted to see if the new xorg-server and associated updates would fix it, but it didn't.
Here is pm-suspend.log:
Initial commandline parameters:

Last edited by Lux Perpetua (2009-07-08 04:20:11)Hi there. Me here with the same problem. Well I think it to be so...
I can not suspend/resume for the second time - when I resume the backlight turns on, but the suspend LED is not turned off, HDD works, CPU, fans work. My computer is Thinkpad T43p. And older kernel does solve the problems.
I am considering one more issue about this problem is that the drivers may conflict with the newest kernel (for example my opensource ati drivers). Any suggestions?
By the way, if someone needs older packages, you can use 'Arch Rollback Machine' (ARM - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53665) -
Cryptsetup and 2.6.35 kernel problem
Hi, I have a strange problem with the 2.6.35 kernel. When the system boots, cryptsetup says "Cannot open device /dev/sda for read-only access". I'm using 64 bit software.
The strange thing is that with the 2.6.33 kernel it works like a charm. I have tried to compare the configs for 2.6.33 and 2.6.35 stock kernels but they're similar ( the 2.6.35 has more options but nothing strange ). I have find a parallel crypto module into the 2.6.25 kernel and I suspect it could be that. I have also tried to recover more informations but cryptsetup is very ermetic ( in the logs I have found nothing to understand what is wrong ).
What do you think about?Hmm. Looks like you have to try add something to your config. Like maybe
Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
You can also change XkbRules to xorg instead of xfree86.
I've googled around but most answers are in a language I don't understand :-)
