Clamd hanging, howto revert to clamscan?

Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 on intel w/ all updates (including manual updates of amavis, spamassassin, clamav, squirellmail, etc)...
Hello, I used the instructions at <http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/62/41/> to use clamd instead of clamscan. But clamd seemingly has red tide because it starts using 100% CPU *sustained for days and days* and stops functioning. The only way to reset it is to sudo kill -9 the process. Regular sudo kill and sudo killall won't work.
I'm tired of trying to fix it, and I just want to go back to using clamscan - slower or not, non-daemonised or not, at least it works.
I've tried to re-comment out the section in the osx.topicdesk.com, but that didn't seem to do the trick. I've also tried unloading /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/net.clamav.clamd.plist and that stopped clamd from working, but I don't believe that clamscan was being used instead.
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • ClamAV fails to scan for viruses in emails [CLAWS MAIL]

I've recently switched from Thunderbird to Claws Mail and ran into one small, but annoying, problem.
I want to use ClamAV + the clamav extension for claws mail to scan for viruses, however it does seem to have permission problems.
clamd is running, user and group clamav all have the relevant permissions as far as I can tell, however upon scanning my mail, I always end up with the following error:
    Scanning error:
/home/username/.claws-mail/mimetmp/0000000e.mimetmp: lstat() failed: Permission denied. ERROR
    Here's my clamd.conf:

  • Another victim of the suddenly-missing AppleTV in iTunes

I picked up my AppleTV a couple of weeks ago, brought it home and synced it successfully to a G4 iMac. Put some content on it, and it ran quite well.
Last night I get home, and iTunes cannot see the device any more. The only variable? Installed the QuickTime "security update" that came down the other night. Can ping the aTV, the router can see it, the aTV can get to the internet and view trailers, did the factory reset twice. AppleTV never appears as a device on iTunes 7.1.1(5) on that machine.
However, my girlfriend's MacBook sees it perfectly. It shows up in the Devices list within seconds and can sync or stream, no problem.
    Steps I've already taken:
    - Powered off the aTV
    - Factory reset the aTV
    - Restarted the wireless router
    - Restarted the G4 iMac
    - Logged in as Administrator and a couple of other users on the iMac
    - Physically removed and reinstalled iTunes on the iMac
    - Verified that I can ping the aTV both from the G4 and the router
    - Verified that all devices are on the same subnet
    - Verified that all devices can be seen by the router
    - Changed channels on the wireless (from 6 to 11)
    - Forced the router to 802.11g-only
    - Read at least ten threads over the last two weeks about similar problems, none of which have conclusive solutions (Apple's troubleshooting page about this pretty much parrots the user guide and is thus useless in this situation).
Without any of these tricks, the MacBook sees it and works with it. Even with all these tricks, the G4 cannot at all.
    Other fun facts:
    - Firewall is not and has never been enabled on the G4
    - Router is not blocking any ports
    - Router configuration has not been changed (except channel as noted above) in weeks
    - All of this used to work on all machines involved
And to restate: this all worked perfectly with the G4 for a couple of weeks. I cannot say that the QuickTime update had anything to do with it, and in fact, the MacBook *got this update too* and still talks to the aTV just fine.
The one thing I haven't done is physically wire the G4 and the aTV to a 10/100 hub and do it wired-style.
I've seen several threads about this, as I said. Nobody seems have come up with a reliable solution and there seems to be a lot of casting-about for possible solutions instead of Apple investigating this properly.

OK, even further update... it turns out that the installer for the new EyeTV 2.4 AppleTV-compatible software has a problem with the QT 7.1.6 update.
    Here's the scenario:
I redid my iMac back to a known-good configuration from a few weeks ago, before the 7.1.6 update. AppleTV now appeared on the Device list just fine, synced up, did everything perfectly.
I installed the 7.1.6 update, and Apple TV STILL worked perfectly!
Then I ran the installer for EyeTV 2.40, and as soon as I gave consent for it to modify some device driver it was using, which I assume means it tweaked QuickTime or iTunes somehow, AppleTV disappeared from Devices, iTunes stopped working correctly, and EyeTV itself would frequently hang.
Reverted back to the next-earlier EyeTV, pulled a good copy of iTunes from my earlier image, and everything started working again.
Late yesterday, Elgato sent me a link to a new beta version of 2.40, which apparently addresses this problem. It has been reported only by users of PowerPC machines, which is why my fiancee's MacBook didn't have a problem. The new patched code works nicely with 7.1.6 and everything works again.
    Here's the patched 2.4:
    http://s3.amazonaws.com/eyetvbeta/eyetv24_betabuild2654.zip
I'll post another thread about this with a better subject so that EyeTV owners can find it and deal with it.

  • Clamav running even though virus filtering is disabled

    greetings all,
I am running an OS X Server 10.4.8 machine. I have virus filtering turned off, and with good reason - when it is on, there is a big performance hit. However, this afternoon clamav randomly clicked on, even though virus filtering is still disabled. I wasn't even working on the server - I only noticed because my monitoring software alerted me to the increased CPU usage. Any ideas as to what could have caused this behavior, and what I can do to reverse it?

OK. This is due to how Apple's default configuration is set up.
amavisd is the content filter and as such responsible for passing mail to spamassassin and/or clamav. On a standard installation, if you turn of virus scanning it will basically only turn of virus database updates, but amavisd will still call clamscan (without reporting anything back or taking any action).
    You have several options.
    1. Turn off content filtering altogether. Not a good idea as you would be buried in spam.
    2. Edit /etc/amavisd.conf and comment out (put a "#" in front of the lines)
    ### http://www.clamav.net/ - backs up clamd or Mail::ClamAV
    ['ClamAV-clamscan', 'clamscan',
    "--stdout --disable-summary -r --tempdir=$TEMPBASE {}",
    [0], qr/:.*\sFOUND$/, qr/^.*?: (?!Infected Archive)(.*) FOUND$/ ],
(May look slightly different on your system.)
    Restart after doing this.
    3. Re-Enable virus scanning and find out why it so heavy on your resources. A properly configured system shouldn't have any major issues (unless you have 100'000 mails a day on underpowered hardware). Make sure you have postfix reject as much rogue mail as possible, before it even hits the content filter.
(There are plenty of threads on this around).

  • Missing AppleTV in iTunes w Vista

    Hi everyone,
My new AppleTV will not appear in my iTunes Devices list. I'm trying to connect to the ATV using a Dell Desktop running Vista Home Premium. The ATV and my computer are connected via a Linksys WRT54G2 router. The ATV connects to the internet and I can stream audio from my iTunes library on the computer to my ATV but the ATV does not appear in the devices list. Here is a list of things I tried.
*Connected the ATV to my home network via wireless and wired
*Turned the router, ATV, and computer off and on in every conceivable sequence
*Disabled the firewall in Vista and uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus
    *Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
*Allowed anonymous internet requests and multicast traffic in the router
*Turned off AP isolation in the router
*Captured network traffic to and from the ATV with Wireshark. It appears Bonjour traffic (port 5353) is making it to my computer. Interestingly Wireshark is telling me the Time-to-Live (TTL) is low or unexpected for the traffic from the ATV.
This seems like a great product but it's going back unless I can get it to work. Please help.

  • After installing Firefox v 22, AppleWorks runs slow and hangs up. Can I unintall v 22 and revert back to Forefox v 21?

I work on a iMac Intel Core 2 Duo - OSX 10.6.8 I rely on using AppleWorks v 6+ (Classic mode -Rosetta) I have over 3000 records in an AppleWorks data base and do not want to lose these records.
Also, I run two Operating Systems on my computer - one (OSX 10.6.8) in my internal HD, another from a 2TB external HD (also OSX 10.6.8). Although I do not recall doing so, I must have downloaded and installed Firefox v 22 on my "internal" HD. Since doing so, AppleWorks hangs up and sometimes requires me to Force Quit the App. However, when using my external HD (which still runs Firefox v 21) when I launch AppleWorks (from my Applications folder on my "Internal HD) I do not experience any problems with AppleWorks. The problem with AppleWorks hanging up or not responding, began only after installing Firefox v 22 on my internal HD. I have no idea why but Firefox v 22 is definitely causing problems with AppleWorks v 6+
Is it possible to revert back to Firefox v 21 (if I uninstall v 22)?

I 'm facing the same problem but I don't want to uninstall better to Roll back to my previous version . 'cause many plug-in ( which is most usefull and important to me ) not supported with my present version V22. like easy youtube .
I want to know what is the benefit if I don't get any better opportunity from upgrade version and also lose my previous version's facility !

  • Firefox 24 and 25-b always hangs when starting up on mac Osx 10.8.5 despite trying everything suggested on support pages. Reverting to firefox 22 works. Help?

I have tried everything on support yet it keeps crashing. My macbook pro has the same software (10.8.5) yet firefox 25.0 works like a dream. My desk top is part of an office network with 10.8 server.
Question title edited by moderator to change "keeps crashing" to "always hangs", since Firefox isn't crashing - it's not responding. aw

I encounter the same problem. I suspect this has to do with remote user homes. Firefox 24 works on local accounts - not in server hosted ones.
I am sorry i can not provide crash reports because Firefox hangs in such an early state - it does not write crash logs. It literally does not crash - it just stops to respond a lounchtime - so it does not give an error in the system console, too.
We have 20 Workstations (OSX 10.8.5) working with apple remote user homes. the problem is persistent on all systems. Firefox 23 worked fine and does again if you reinstall it.

  • Dreamweaver CC 2014.1 slow, hangs, loses passwords... Should I revert to a different version?

I've been using Dreamweaver since version 2 in 1998. These days I use it mostly for editing PHP / HTML / CSS. I don't use the visual editing features much.
With each release, Dreamweaver gets slower and less reliable. I'm at my wits end. This morning:
When using Find: Entire Local Site feature on a relatively large site (about 10,000 pages) the find just stops about 20% through, takes up 100% of my CPU, hangs indefinitely. I have to force-quit.
When opening files that tie in with a substantial javascript framework (e.g. twitter bootstrap) opening files, even bringing the file to focus, saving files, is unbearably slow. I've already turned off Enable Related Files.
For the first time ever, Dreamweaver is now just losing my FTP passwords and I'm having to type them in again from scratch. Might have to do with force-quitting (see #1.)
I'm actively looking for a replacement code editor at this point. So far, nothing quite fits the bill. In the meantime, can anyone recommend a process for getting Dreamweaver to be faster and more reliable? I'm very much willing to downgrade, etc.

    > were you opening them in live view or design view
Neither -- I work 100% in code view. That's why I'm fairly intolerant for slowness. I use Dreamweaver as a code/text editor exclusively. I love the way it colorizes, checks syntax, does PHP lookup functions.
    > Can you please let us know how many related files like js, css etc are present among your 10000+ files?
I'll do you one better: I'm sending you a private message with a link to download the template + framework I'm using. You should be able to open up any number of files and experience the problem for yourself.
FYI: With my downgraded (2014.0) version, I still get a lot of beach balls simply when bringing focus back to a Dreamweaver document, or when I start typing something new. However saving is now instant again, which is nice.

  • Photoshop CC consistently hangs during photomerge when trying to blend images. Had to revert to CS6 which works great. Bug in cc?

It doesn't matter how many photos I'm trying to merge...get the same problem. System just quits when it gets to the "blending" stage. Photoshop CS6 works fine, so must be a bug in cc.
I have a new Windows 7 system with plenty of memory and a 3tb hard disk. Any thoughts or work-arounds would be helpful.

The things some people use the term "bug" for …
You have not even mentioned the exact version of Photoshop you use, so even if it should be a bug it is impossible to ascertain whether it was a bug that has already been fixed in an update.

  • Disk Utility hanging on Erase/Partition OR Howto backup a dual boot Mactel?

I'm trying to use Disk Utility to format an external usb hd as HFS+ for backing up my Macbook. Running 10.4.7 and Disk Util 10.5.6 (latest version afaik)
Problem is whenever I try to either Erase format a hard drive using my usb2 external enclosure, Disk Util just kinda freaks, not really doing anything, and after a minute or so becomes the program becomes unresponsive. Luckily the rest of my system keeps on working, and I can just force quite disk util. But when I try to shutdown/restart my system I'm forced to do a hard power down.
I've tried leaving Disk Util running overnight, thinking it was just needing a little extra time to get thru the process, but nothing changed when I woke. And a gave the macbook a good hour to shutdown cleanly, but it stays stuck with the blue screen and the spinning gray wheel at the very end of teh shutdown cycle.
Looking at the disk util log (after force quiting and restarting the util) it will simply say:
Aug 12 03:24:09: Disk Utility started.
    Preparing to erase : “Mb”
    Creating Partition Map
Aug 12 03:25:50: Disk Utility started.
I've also tried running disk util off the osx install cd (tiger 10.4.6), but i get what seems to be identical behavior, and i have to manually turn off the macbook.
I've tried this with two hard drives with identical results. In Windows (boot camp) im able to format the partition fine, but it only does ntfs because of the drive's size (and I'm not trying to use a windows fs anyway).
I plugged the usb hd into a powerbook, and used a 10.4.0 retail cd to run disk util (no hd in the powerbook) and its able to erase/partition the disks just fine. I can then plug them back into the macbook and theyre recognized just fine. But its PPC system and doesnt offer for gtp partitioning which I'm thinking will be a problem because ultimately I'm trying to use this drive to do bootable backups of my macbook.
I'd like to figure out what is wrong with Disk Util. But even if i get the partitioning working, i have the larger problem of -how- to backup the macbook's hd onto an identical sized hd (80 gigs), that will make both osx and windows bootable backups that I can restore off of.
One thought was to use the unix utility dd, and just do a bitwise copy of one disk to another. Any idea if this would work?
Another option would be manually creating the partitions myself, and then backing up each of the drives seperately. Not sure if I could even make a bootable backup of windows from within osx.
I know I'm not the only one running boot camp and looking to have reliable backups. What are other people doing to address this issue.
Ideally I would like to find a solution that:
*creates an identical disk with two bootable partitions
*can be automated, or at best a few simple steps that can be done once and then walked away from
    Thanks for the help

  • I've been trying for 3 days to setup firefox sync. It keeps hanging at "Verifying" and doesn't ever verify. Help!

I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and nothing seems to help. I am on Windows 7 with the latest version of Firefox. Also, the window where you put your information to create the sync account is acting peculiar. Three buttons at the bottom are blank. I click the "Options" (I think, because it doesn't have a name) button and select all. Then select the button that should say "Next" on it, but both those buttons say "Undefined" on them. Then I get "Verifying" and it hangs there.

    Hi,
You can consider the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems Reset Firefox] feature via '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information'''.

  • W520 hangs on Windows 7 Pro x64 installation, cannot boot live CD

    Hi Everyone!
I decided to reach out to the community for some intelligence that I have not been able to obtain elsewhere.  Here's my story in details in case someone can find a break on any of them ...
I purchased my W520 in November, 2011 with 1 year warranty and used it without issues until last week.  One morning when I started the laptop, it loaded Windows 7 Pro x64, I logged in.  After loading the desktop, I locked the screen/user and stepped out for a minute.  When I came back, the screen was frozen and after a few minutes of waiting I manually powered off the laptop.
Upon restart, Windows 7 would hang on the logo screen and restart in a few minutes.  I was able to restart under Safe Mode, however, which enabled me to create the rescue DVD's.
I decided to re-install the OS, but the installation would hang on the Windows logo screen again.  This was also attempted with all accessories (usb kbd, usb wireless mouse, and display I also tried w/o the battery) disconnected. Then I thought, that it could be a bad hdd - I tried installing XP Pro but got the BSOD with a bad hdd error code.  At that point, I attached the hdd to a working PC and ran checkdisk which found no errors. The problem persisted even with unpartitioned disk and a spare hdd that I had on hand.  What intrigued me was that no linux live CD could load (it would freeze on the loading screen).
After this, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version without any issues during the flash process.  The Windows 7 Pro x64 installation would hang again at the usual logo screen.  I also tried with different DVD source... Memtest did not show any problems either.
Then I called an IT support guy who was not experienced with the issue and took the laptop for bench testing, and after four days of back and forth the IT company was inconclusive that the issues is most likely caused by a bad BIOS.
This happened around March 21, 2013 after Windows 7 installed updates (not sure if this could be related).  The weird part is that the W520 worked fine for a year and four months and when it crashed I was able to use Safe Mode, access and flash BIOS, but was unable to run new installation or live CD's.
Is there anything that I am missing?  Has anyone had the same experience?  What is the conclusion according to you - it is really bad BIOS chip or just a UEFI-related setting?
Thanks for reading and trying to help!

    Sir:
I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you write "BIOS v1.40 settings that will make it possible to install Windows 7  Pro 64", but, you can download the 1.40 BIOS (which appears to be the most recent release) from this link: Device Driver File Matrix - W520 , and if you have any concerns about the BIOS settings not being appropriate, just enter the BIOS setup manager (tap the F1 key repeatedly when the laptop is booting) and select 'revert to defaults' or similar.
