Clamshell mode w/external monitor broken in 10.8.2

Ever since I made the .2 upgrade in mountain lion clamshell mode does not work with my MBPro 8,2. Previously in Lion and Mountain Lion clamshell mode worked fine, I even executed the following terminal command so I could open the lid without the internal display turning on (sudo nvram -d boot-args). Now when I wake the computer from sleep with the lid closed, mouse and external monitor plugged in, I get to the login screen, the desktop will flash and then it will go back to sleep again. The only rememdy is to open the lid, but then my terminal command isn't working and the internal display turns on. This is most frustrating. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the snarky reply. I know how to do a search, you'd assume if I'm smart enough to try a terminal hack I knew how to use a web page search box.
It looks like every discussion on the clamshell issue gets mysterious "closed," "helped" or "answered" when indeed there is no real solution, including the thread you linked, hence my new topic. So I appreciate the help. </sarcasm>
This is a real problem and I wish I could be shocked at Apple's response. I use Win7 in bootcamp for work, it is so trivial to turn off my internal laptop display or work in clamshell mode. In the rush to get out Facebook integration and shared photo streams Apple really let this bug through in the update?
Back to my issue, it doesn't matter what monitor port I use (VGA or DVI) clamshell mode doesn't work. Turning off the internal display obviously doesn't work when connected to an external monitor. Contrary to your link (and many other threads) this problem (clamshell mode or turning off the internal display when an external is attached) still exists. It worked in 10.8.1, it doesn't in 10.8.2.

I have a new MBP retina display. Trying to operate in a closed clamshell mode. I connect a USB keyboard and a wireless mouse. MacBook Pro keeps going to sleep in closed-lid mode and external monitor

I am trying to run the MacBook in closed lid mode with an external monitor. It seems to work fine at first, but after about 10 seconds, it goes to sleep. I can wake it back up but it just goes to sleep again.
Has anyone seen this before?

I figured it out. Apparently you can't run in closed-lid mode on battery. I plugged in the power adapter and it's working fine now.

Sleep mode with external monitor

I've noticed that if I'm using my Macbook connected to an external monitor then sleep mode cannot be initiated by simply closing the lid.
The system starts to enter sleep then bounces out of that mode and remains running (with the dock having moved to the external screen)
Initiating sleep thru' the on/off button seems to work.
Isn't this what Beta versions are for?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
This does sound like a very frustrating situation. I understand that your keyboard and trackpad not responsive after waking from sleep and you are forced to shut down to get them to respond. In this situation I would recommend resetting the computer’s PRAM and testing fresh. Please read over and follow the instructions for this process in the attached article.

[SOLVED] Modesetting with external monitor broken (intel)

After recent updates, modesetting during boot no longer works if an external (vga) monitor is plugged in.
Once it gets to modesetting, both screens go black and I can't tell what happens after that (Might hang, might boot fine I just can't see it…) The external vga screen is black (with very occasional horizontal line of noise), but remains on (It doesn't go to sleep, which it usually does if not receiving a signal).
If the monitor is unplugged during boot then plugged in once the login prompt is reached, modesetting works and running X multihead with xrandr seems to work normally. (workaround until the issue is solved)
Changing from Early KMS start to Late KMS start means the black screen appears later, but it still appears.
Booting with nomodeset works with the monitor plugged in, but means X fails to start with an error message about not finding any screens.
The laptop is an old macbook, with integrated intel graphics card:

Ok, I'm trying to collect information for a bug report, so if people could confirm or correct what I have so far and add any additional relevant information, that'd be very helpful.
The fact that running the linux-lts kernel fixes the issue suggests that the problem almost certainly lies with the kernel.
Comparing the date of my first post with /var/log/pacman.log, I believe the upgrade that first caused the issue to appear was this:
upgraded linux (3.7.3-1 -> 3.7.4-1)
(There is a very slim possibility that I managed to upgrade to 3.7.4 without actually rebooting into the previous kernel, in which case the issue could have been present in an earlier version, but I wouldn't have encountered it.)
So far, the only graphics card affected appears to integrated intel chips:
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS(/GME), 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Has anyone observed this issue with a different graphics card? (check the output from entering "lspci" in a terminal if you're not sure how to find out)
Finally, Wittfella found reinstalling from scratch fixed the issue. If someone can come up with a reasonable explanation as to *why* this fixed it (and ideally narrow it down to changes that can be made without reinstalling from scratch if at all possible), then it's possible that it's not an actual bug, so much as a poorly documented change that causes problems upgrading but is otherwise ok afterwards.

No keyboard, but Mac still goes into clamshell mode

How do I prevent this?
I have power attached and an external monitor. No keyboard, no mouse, no bluetooth devices, no USB devices. When I close the laptop lid it moves all my apps to the external monitor and stays on. I want it to sleep.
The Apple documentation says all 3 are required for clamshell mode: power, external monitor, keyboard. Apple store guy says it might be a bug in the OS.

External Monitor no longer working after install of 10.4.3

I am having some major issues after the last update with my external monitor, Dell 1905FP. I have a PowerBook G4 15in, 1.5 processor. Prior to the update I had no issues utlizing the monitor while closing the clamshell but after the update I was unable to utilize the rotation to portrait view on my monitor, with the clamshell closed. It would work on standard view to close the clamshell and then wake the computer utilizing a USB device or bluetooth keyboard.
I decided to after repairing permissions, disk utility, utilizing a DVI and the Analog cord with adaptor, creating a test user account, resetting PRAM and NVRAM and such to try reapplying the combo updater. This further broke the problem as I was unable to close the clamshell and wake the computer up to utilize the external monitor, even in standard (landscape view). When I do close the clamshell with the external monitor hooked up and then wake the computer with my mouse or keyboard the external monitor does power on and shows a lot of static and such not allowing me to see my desktop, but I can see the mouse cursor.
The external monitor works just fine, so long as I leave the lid open and if it goes to sleep with the clamshell open, it wakes just fine and the monitor works. This problem only occurs when I close the clamshell. I prefer the clamshell closed because it gives me the full screen that I desire in portrait mode due to the great amount of writing I do (it allows me to see a full 1 1/2 pages of text in Word while writing).
Another monkey wrench is that I was able to use another monitor, a 17in CRT and it worked just fine, I could close the clamshell and wake the computer utilizing my mouse as I have always been able to. However, I do not believe the Dell monitor is broken, given it will work with a PC laptop perfectly.
Does anyone have a clue on what this issue could be and a possible fix. I have used my Mac exclusively for a little over a year and I am just learning how to troubleshoot this. My thoughts would be to throw away the preferences in the system and then try hooking up the monitor again (as if it were a new monitor)but I have no idea what preferences to throw away.

I answered this question on my own. I was able to utilize Pacifist and reinstalling the video card drivers and display profiles. Now everything works as it should.

Clamshell mode messed up...

I use my macbook pro running Lion in closed lid clamshell mode with external keyboard, mouse and monitor all the time. There was a recent change in my logic board with a similar config one cause of problems with the USB.
When I open the lid it takes a lot of time for it to redetect the internal led display. they keyboard and the trackpad also dont function. when i unplugg the mini displayport it almost always doesn't detect the internal display again. keyboard and trackpad are also left non functioning.
when i unplug everything and reboot, it tends to power on the display, but as soon as the login window appears it goes blank. the internal keyboard and trackpad are unable to bring it up again. if at this point i connect my external diplay it works fine!
can someone tell me if this is some bug in lion or if this is my new logic board. incidently i started using an external configuration from the day my new logic board was fitted in. so i'm not sure of this was the same problem with the older one, thus am not sure if this is a logic board problem at all.

You need to have it looked at.
Whether or not you have an external display, keyboard or mouse connected when you open the lid all part of the MBP should work. Displat should come on (that is why there is clamshell mode. The only way to turn off the internal display) and the internal keyboard and touchpad should aways work even if the lid is closed (if you could get to them with the lid closed).
I believe it works on a magnetic switching system. Basically the same switching system used to put the unit into sleep mode when there is no external keyboard or display attached even if you have a mouse attached and it is running on battery or AC power. When you close the lid the unit goes into sleep mode. That same switch is used to set the system into clamshell mode when there are all those other prerequisites attached.

External monitor not going full resolution on extended desktop

I have a Gateway widescreen 1680x1050 resolution monitor plugged into my 13" Macbook Aluminum computer. When I have both my external and built in display turned on extended mode, my external monitor only goes up to 1600x1000 resolution, which is obviously lower than full-res. When I close the lid of my Macbook (and run the external display only), the external display goes up to full 1680x1050 resolution. Could someone please help me solve the problem of my Gateway external display going to less than full res on extended display mode.

There is a clue here in what might be going on. Note that the MacBook's 1280x800 display is a 16:10 aspect ratio (exactly). Now, the external resolution that is reported by shmootz is 1600x1000 which is also a 16:10 ratio. It looks to me that the system is running as if it is in the mirrored mode. The video driver will force the displays to the same aspect ratio when running as mirrored displays.
I'd try a few things to see if you can reset the display options. First, try toggling the "Mirror Displays" option in System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement. Second, you may want to try a reset of your PRAM and the SMC.

What I'm trying to do is take my old TiBook 550 with its malfunctioning screen and busted hinges (grrrr) and effectively turn it into a low-budget version of a Mac Mini i.e. hook up a USB keyboard and LCD monitor to it and use it as if it were a desktop.
Now I have successfully attached the monitor and keyboard, turned on video mirroring etc. and it's all working fine. No problems with getting the thing to work. The only problem is I am having to keep the PB screen open slightly so that I can shut down and boot up for each session (for various reasons I don't want to leave it in sleep mode). Even though I bought a keyboard that has a USB power button on it, I am still unable to use it to boot up (I can shut down though).
As I understand it 'clamshell' mode only allows you to put the computer to sleep, so is there any way I can permanently tell the PB to ignore the on board LCD and only use the external display? My ultimate goal is to just have the PB sitting out of the way, lid closed (or lid removed??), whilst I use the keyboard and external display PLUS be able to shut down and reboot without having to prise open the screen, which is now quite damaged. Any ideas? TIA.

I think you're right - Shutting down works via the keyboard but not Boot Up. It's weird because I'm sure I remember being able to do this once in the dim and distant past but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway I've now hooked up my old laptop so that the screen is held ajar so I can reach the power button. After some research, I found out that the laptop should not be used with the screen closed for long periods anyway because of heat issues so this inelegant solution is probably the best in terms of keeping the temperature down.
Now what I need is some safe way of permanently disabling the display so that ONLY the external monitor works. If there was some way of doing that, at least I would not be wasting energy powering the original LCD. So far I have been able to disconnect the cable on the back of the screen that sends the 'data' to the LCD, but I've not yet been able to disable the back light.

Clamshell mode and mouse not working on external monitor

Suddenly I notice that when I put my MBP (late model 2008, Lion) in clamshell mode, my blue tooth mouse and wireless keyboard become unresponsive
I think the MBP has frozen but its only that the mouse and keyboard do not respond.
I have to open the MBP in order for the mouse to work so I can work using the externa (Apple 24" monitor).
This just started happening.
Has anyone experienced this?
Just started happening as of yesterday March 19. I cannot think of anything new I downloaded. Rebooting did not seem to help.

HT3131 Clamshell mode not working even after powering off and reconnecting display; external monitor goes black anyway

After connecting an external monitor (non-Mac) to my MacBook (Mac OSX 10.6.6) w/proper adaptor, setting up to use clamshell mode as per manual, the external still goes black even after putting MacBook to sleep, disconnecting and reconnecting external and powering up again as suggested in Support. Displays are set to Mirror. Also, when I open Displays in System preferences, 2 different windows for Resolution settings appear. Where have I gone wrong? This monitor (Viewsonic) came with it's own software for setup on a Windows PC, but of course it is not being used on the MacBook.
Any help would be appreciated!

Yes I followed all the procedueres....except for waking the computer using a keyboard click. For obvious reasons one is just inclined to open the top of the MacBook to wake it when the external goes dark...I did that twice, until I realized that very last step was needed to 'wake' it. It worked. Something so simple, easy to overlook I guess.
I did leave the monitors mirrored, fyi, if I don't then all I can access from the external are the resolution settings. This Viewsonic comes pre-loaded with Windows software of it's own and doesn't quite behanve the way my previous external did, but I got it figured out.

MacBook will not display on external monitor in clamshell mode

Generic wireless mouse that connects to a USB stick plugged into the MacBook
This is dirving me nuts because it was working perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. I was following the pocess outlined here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
Here is what happens now:
MacBook display and external monitor are in mirroring mode. All devices are powered on and plugged in.
Close MacBook lid. MacBook goes to sleep. Blinking LED.
Hit spacebar on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. The LED changes to steady on. However, the external display never shows the desktop. I've tried Command-F1... nothing.
If I open the lid again... the MacBook goes back to sleep.
I then have to pull out the DisplayPort VGA adapter to wake the MacBook up again.

You could try resetting the SMC and see if that helps.
