Clamshell mode won't work? (MacBook + LG Monitor)

Howdy!
I've triple-checked the official doc on how to use Clamshell Mode, but I can't seem to get it to work. My MacBook is plugged in and fully charged, the display (LG W2052TG) is connected, as are my USB keyboard and mouse. Yet when I close the display on my MacBook, it goes to sleep and will not wake back up. I've even kept trying for 5 minutes at one point.
I'm trying to avoid using InsomniaX (those warnings scare me)...

Are you sure you are waiting long enough? When I use clamshell mode it takes several seconds, perhaps as long as ten seconds before it works after I click the mouse. Try again, and wait a while before giving up.

I am running a 2010 13" Macbook Pro and a Dell ST2410 23" external display. I have been using an HDMI to mini displayport cable with this setup for over a year without a problem. Now my monitor goes dark when I try to setup the MBP in clamshell mode. I even tried to lower the resolution on the monitor to see if that would remedy it, and it won't display anything. This problem first started when I upgraded to 10.6.8, and now is giving me problems in 10.7. Help!

assuming that you have an external monitor (you said 23"), usb kbd & mouse. How do you start it up?
I always opened the lid, hit the power and quickly closed before the chime would sound. Do you boot OS X up, then close the lid? Or do you do it as I do?
My PB is on 10.6.8 and never had any issues, besides running a little hotter..

  • Macbook Pro 15" - clamshell mode doesn't work after installing Mavericks

So I've upgraded to Mavericks, but my late 2011 MBP 15" has stopped working in clamshell mode (closed lid with external display on) – display just does not detect an input after closing the lid. Anyone experienced this?

This was het same problem as in upgrade to Mountain Lion before... Apparently the NVRAM reset should fix this (PRAM-reset for non-intel based macs)
    >>>
OK, after upgrading to 10.8.2 and then doing a PRAM reset gives me clamshell mode back!

  • Clamshell mode does not work with Mountain Lion.

Installed Mountain Lion on 11" MacBook Air last Friday night.  Now system does not appear to work in Clamshell mode, as it won't wake or connect to external monitor.

Apple Tech Support was very helpful.  The MBA works in clamshell mode next to my monitor now -- but does not work in the Henge Dock.  Henge Dock has been contacted.

  • Can running Macbook Pro in Clamshell Mode cause problems for Macbook Display?

    Hi,
I recently got a new monitor (Dell U2711) and it is stunning when running at full resolution through a mini displayport to displayport adapter. However, i ran my MBP in Clamshell Mode and after rebooting (without the display this time) i had horrible lines across my screen. It was like a grid, but they were tiny, it was like i could see the individual pixels or groups of about 4. I turned it off straight away and when i came back to it (about an hour or 2 later) it was as normal.
I just want to know what is the regular behaviour of running in Clamshell? Is that to be expected? I know that Macbooks dissipate heat through the keyboard, so i wonder if it could be a heat related problem, and if that's something i should be worried about in relation to causing long term damage to my mac's display, or will it always sort itself out?
Sadly, i can't recreate the problem as i have a faulty monitor and it needs to be sent back (i will be getting the same model as a replacement though).
Does anyone have anything to say on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Is this a brand new, less then a year old, MBP? If it is then take it to a Apple care center and have them look at it.
It's a refurb late 2008 that i bought in late 2009, but i do have apple care until september 2012 i think, i guess if the problem happens again i can take it in and they can sort me out.

MBPs don't dissipate any significant amount of heat through the keyboard. No matter how often that misconception is posted, it's still a misconception.
Ok, so it shouldn't be anything to do with heat then, i know the top left corner (closest to the screen) gets pretty hot too, just above the speaker, but from Shootist007's post, it would appear that heat doesn't have anything to do with it. I mean, i wasn't running intensive tasks, i was only browsing the internet.

  • In clamshell mode, must I connect to a monitor?

I just got a keyboard, and I was told that when attached, if I closed my macbook, it would either just go into clamshell mode, or ask.  I connected to a TV via the DVI adaptor and when I closed the macbook, it just said, no signal.  Keyboard & mouse do work when macbook is open.  Thanks for your help.

Wake the computer up by pressing a key on the keyboard or a button on the mouse.

  • REscue Mode won't work - mi

    Hello,
My wife's micro won't go past the creative screen when you start it up. When it is in rescue mode nothing will work. It was on format all night and did nothing. The screen still said formatting. I think it should be done in 6 hours. I was going to reinstall the firmware, but the computer won't recognize the player. Sounds like it's time to send it into creative. I'm hoping someone knows a way to fix it, but I kind of doubt it.

As per the FAQ post, if functions in rescude mode aren't working then the player is faulty. This is probably one of the two most common faults with the player, perhaps caused by a faulty hard dri've.

  • Here's a hairpuller: how come my Oblivion mods won't work?

Before you point me in the other direction, sending me to this thread and this wiki page, I can say that I'm pretty certain case sensitivity is not the issue here.  It's not a load order issue either.  It's not an incompatibility issue.  Some of the mods I want to try out just won't work (when running in Linux).
This past week I've been playing Oblivion a lot (I'm late to this party, I understand) and I finally decided I'd try out some mods.  Not a whole bunch, and not even ones that are necessarily all that game changing.  Basically there are a few for performance, a GUI change, and then a few game enhancing ones.
I've checked and checked again and I'm as sure as I can be about this not having to do with case sensitivity.  There is one meshes folder, one textures folder, etc.  I'm still using a partition from when I built this computer in 2006 that is FAT32 to house my games from when I still used Windows, and the file system indeed ignores cases.  That's why I'm so confused.
Mods that work (in Linux w/ wine): DarNified UI 1.3.2, 7lbsBedrolls-OBSE, HorseCommandsv2, SD Skill Diary.
Mods that don't: Unofficial Oblivion Patch, Streamline 3.1, MD Saddlebags v3.0, Expanded Hotkeys and Spell Delete V2, DropLitTorchOBSE, kurteeInventoryIsABackpack, HorseSpeedEqualsPlayerSpeed, P1DmenuEscape, Oss133FrameRateOptimizer.
But they all work in Windows.  I had to fire up my Windows install to give it its once-every-3-to-6-months action, fired up the game, and they all loaded up right away without a problem.  I can't figure out why.
In Linux they all load up and are detected fine through OblivionLauncher.exe,  Oblivion Mod Manager, and TES4Edit.exe.  Everything I can think of suggests that they should all be working, but they're not.  I've gotten 4 to work.  So what gives?  Do I have any hope?

The patch is working now, as is the torch one (kind of).  The thing I can't wrap my mind around is why, though.  Especially since I've been reading all day about how some people have no trouble at all.
I'm playing in Windows for now .  We'll see how long this lasts.  If I start playing in Linux again at least I have the new UI and it runs OK.
EDIT: Do you think I'd have any luck in packing the mods I've downloaded as .omods?  I'll give it a shot later.

  • CS5.5 Blending Modes Won't Work?

Being an avid user of AfterEffects CS4, the transition to CS5.5 was painless.. Except for the fact that the blending modes don't work. This has halted all my projects.
What happens is that when I select a blending mode, nothing happens. It shows that I set the layer to 'add', but absolutely nothing happens. I just got CS5.5 yesterday, so I haven't changed any settings that could mess it up (That I know of).
    Any help would be appreciated!!!

I'm confused. Blending modes require two or more layers. They work to blend one layer with the layer beneath it. But you only have one layer. How are you determining that blending modes aren't working?
See this for basic information about blending modes.

  • Macbook screen won't work, but external monitor works fine...

Hey guys - are there any solutions out there for this problem that doesn't involve hundreds of dollars? A mate of mine spilled beer on a macbook - had to pay for it, I fired it up and everything works fine but the screen... Is there a way that I can check the connections or dry something off? Apple told the owner to throw it in the bin - but it works fine plugged into a monitor. The screen isn't cracked or chipped - all looks fine - I'm guessing that fluid had got into a connection somewhere. Help me Gurus!
    Cheers

Have you tried drying it without the back cover and upside down? l heard it worked for some guy

  • Macbook Pro 2009 has gray screen, safe mode won't work

I have a Macbook Pro 2009, with a new hard drive installed in August of 2013. I opened my computer a couple days ago to a gray screen with a prohibitory sign and a spinning gear that will not disappear. I have no backup and tried to backup my hard drive to an external drive in Recovery Mode, but I got an error message and the backup did not work: the image could not be created. So I decided to try Safe Mode, but the Macbook will not enter safe mode. Is there any way to get onto the computer just to backup a handful of files onto an external drive before I format my drive and start over? Am I doing something wrong by trying to enter safe mode? (I held down the Shift key after the chime and released it when the Apple logo and the gear appeared) Any help is appreciated. I've read all the topics in the forums I could find on this issue, but none of the directions seem to help. Thank you.

    LisaLoParo,
no, you’re not doing anything wrong in trying to boot into Safe mode.
I can think of three possible alternatives to Safe mode to try:
    If you have an external disk, you could boot from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD which came in the box with your MacBook Pro, and try copying files from your internal disk to the external disk;
    If you have a bootable external disk, you could boot from it using Startup Manager, and try copying files from your internal disk to the external disk;
If you have access to a FireWire 800 cable and a second Mac with a FireWire 800 port, you could try booting your MacBook Pro into Target Disk mode so that it can be used as an external disk from the second Mac, and try copying files from your MacBook Pro to the second Mac.
You’d only need to try one of these three alternatives; if you try one of them and it doesn’t work, then you’d get the same result by trying either of the other two. Good luck.

  • Hard Drive failure - various boot modes won't work, HELP!

    Hello all,
First of all, sorry for the essay, but I didn't want to miss out on possible crucial details that could help!
A couple of weeks ago, my beloved 27" iMac had a hard drive failure. It won't boot, but instead goes to the grey 'no entry' sign when booting up. I tried holding Cmd + V on boot and this message repeated itself whilst failing to boot:
    "rooting via boot-uuid from chosen/: D94DA2D5-DB38-3517-B05D-70A97AC6EE5B
    Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key><IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1"> IOResorces</string><key>IOResourceMach</key><string ID= "2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict>

    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
jnl: unknown-dev: open: phys_blksz 4096 does not match journal header size 512, and journal is not empty!
hfs: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)
cannot mount root, errno = 19"
I'm not sure how much of that is useful, but I thought I'd copy it all down anyway.
I googled error number = 19 and found articles on an invalid b-tree node and corrupt journals, leaving me to believe that because I recently deleted a Windows Vista partition and reformed the overall HD into a 2TB OSX volume, some windows data may have been left over and corrupted the journal?
So it fails to boot normaly, using Cmd V, and using the OSX install disk, as well as failing to boot from the DiskWarrior 4 DVD I purchased from my local Apple Reseller because I'd heard that it's very good at helping with issues such as what I think my HD is having. I tried Disk Utility whilst booting from the install disk, and tried to repair the drive, and each time I tried it said that invalid content was present in the journal but the disk repair had been successful.
Am I right in thinking that my data is on the drive, it's just that OSX won't register the drive's existence because of a corrupted journal? (the little I know of hard drives is shining brightly through at this point, I'm sure!)
I also tried to boot using target mode by connecting my iMac to a MacBook Pro also running Snow Leopard, but, whilst the iMac clearly went into target mode (bouncing firewire icon on screen), my HD never appeared on the desktop of the MacBook Pro, nor in Disk Utility.
Whilst I have AppleCare, I haven't tried taking it to a mac store yet because of two reasons; 1. The last time I did this I had HD failure on my old 2008 MBP and, whilst I told them to keep the data on it, the first thing they did was reformat the disk. Needless to say, it worked, but I lost all my valuable Data! The second reason is that it's bloody heavy, and I don't own a car!
Before people go on about the way I should have backed up my data, I did, and that's gone as well! D:
    System Specs:
    First generation of 27" iMacs
    2.8Ghz Intel i7 quad core
    2TB HD
ATi Radeon HD 4850 512mb VRAM
    8GB DDR3 RAM
OS version: not the very latest snow leopard but the one before.
Thanks in advance, and once again sorry for the essay!

I'm not sure about the DW disk. Check that out at Alsoft's website. Apple doesn't provide data recovery services.
Apple has records of your iTunes purchases. However, the licensing for music only permits you to download it once. I'm surprised that you don't have backups.
If you get an external enclosure in which to put the drive then you might try accessing it from the MBP as an external drive. If you have an external drive you could try using recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Beyond this you would need to send the drive off to a data recovery service which will be extremely expensive.

    I was responding to Shallici.
Screen shots would have to be posted on a Web hosting service if you have one set up.
Sounds like it's still not working??
Try a re-setup and re-start. Shut it all down and re-connect from scratch.
It's been a while since I tinkered on a Panasonic, bit I recall a menu setting that controls the DV in/out.

  • I have a late 2010 MB Air (mini display port) and a new 2013 iMac (thunderbolt) which I would love to use as an external display. I suspect that target display mode won't work.Any ideas for how to achieve this?

According to the TDM support page, this isn't possible. I tried it with a Mnidisplay port to minidisplay port cable without success. Its a shame that thunderbolt doesn't appear to be backwards compable as I could have achieved this with an older iMac.

You are correct....it will not work. Please carefully read Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
