Clarification for Pro 8 EULA

I'd like to receive some clarification on an issue I
certainly feel deserves it. Please keep in mind any reference to
"original media" need not be digital at all or in any way under the
control of Adobe before being loaded or converted to PDF format.
Please reference the text from the EULA below (on an
Acrobat-installed machine found at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
8.0\Acrobat\Legal\en_US):
14.13.1.1 "Deploy" means to deliver or otherwise make available,
directly or indirectly, by any means, an Extended Document to one
or more recipients.
14.13.1.2 "Extended Document" means a Portable Document
Format file manipulated by Acrobat Professional Software to enable
the ability to locally save documents with filled-in PDF forms.
14.13.3 For any unique Extended Document, you may only
either (a) Deploy such Extended Document to an unlimited number of
unique recipients but shall not extract information from more than
five hundred (500) unique instances of such Extended Document or
any hardcopy representation of such Extended Document containing
filled form fields; or (b) Deploy such Extended Document to no more
than five hundred (500) unique recipients without limits on the
number of times you may extract information from such Extended
Document returned to you filled-in by such Recipients.
Notwithstanding anything herein to the contrary, obtaining
additional licenses to use Acrobat Professional shall not increase
the foregoing limits (that is, the foregoing limits are the
aggregate total limits regardless of how many additional licenses
to use Acrobat Professional you may have obtained).
As I currently interpret these lines in regards to form
submission and Usage Rights 14.13.3 sentence a) refers to the
extraction of information from 500 unique instances of the document
or a hardcopy representation thereof. Since this sentence refers to
the Extended Document which is inherently an instance of the file
itself I have interpreted as others have that the ultimate
determinant and initial starting point for scope of these terms
would be the file itself. Many developers are thus designing their
apps to assume the role of file-instance tracking where, for
example, a new package file could be manually created in
Professional 8 from combined documents, have Usage Rights Enabled
and then be re-used as a separate and digitally unique Extended
Document after 500 is reached - per the terms of the EULA. In this
way the instance of the file is tracked and removed from Deployment
when the limit is met. There should be no insinuation in regards to
this EULA discriminating against original media used to create the
Extended Document, as these paragraphs specifically define the
final "Extended Document" or the Deployed file itself as the basis
for their language. I am not putting this in here to cause any
debate, but merely to advise on my own and others' interpretation
of the EULA in regards to what seems to be a very clear
explanation, and a topic of interest to many developers who wish to
make full use of the power Acrobat Professional 8 provides - while
acting in accordance with said EULA.
In short there should be no bearing on the original media or
their likeness (not necessarily digital or under any control of
Adobe whatsoever at this point - as in before being loaded into or
converted by Acrobat) in regards to the final created PDF file as a
Usage Rights Enabled, or dare I say, Extended Document, correct? In
my own professional interpretation as a developer this would be a
correct understanding of your EULA. After all I would hope that
Adobe would foster the sort of development and progression in web
applications that this would afford without having to curtail to
specific languages or existing, marketed technologies.
I would like to hear confirmation or clarification from an
Adobe rep concerning this.
I am mainly bringing this to light after reading the reference
to hardcopy, but this should not be a problem as this clearly
refers to the "extraction of information from...any hardcopy
representation of such Extended Document", which would be after the
Extended Document is created and in regards to it's submission, and
so I am also verifying the ability to use similar original media in
the creation of a new Extended Document (and inherently a
completely new file) to be Deployed as this does not seem to be
contrary to the EULA. I do appreciate the time.

This is a user to user forum. Have you contacted Adobe
Customer Support or cantacted an attorney about your legal
question? An answer here is not binding on Adobe.
Oh don't worry I'm not trying to bind anyone and I have sent
a request to Adobe Customer Support but was hoping to gain insight
on the re-use of original media used to create the PDF and what
others' experiences may have been in regards to their professional
adherence to the EULA.

Try asking your question in the Acrobat Windows or Acrobat
Macintosh forum, as these forums deal with the Acrobat Standard of
Professional products and not the conferencing product Acrobat
Connect.
Yes, I was hoping these forums deal with Acrobat Standard or
Professional as I am talking about Acrobat Professional 8, I don't
know why you think my question was related to Acrobat Connect, I
don't even know what that is.
Contrary to what seems to be the "trend" on most tech-forums
nowadays it was my hope that any subsequent replies would focus on
the issue and/or topic at hand, although I would agree that an
official answer would come direct from Adobe. Did not mean to
direct such an official inquiry to the public but I am attempting
to engage in General Discussion here after all. I will certainly
take your advice to push the issue with Adobe, however I am also
interested in the interpretation of developers such as yourself.
These things happen with such a vague EULA - although when I
rationalize the very terms they have defined it does not seem so
vague, which is where my desire for confirmation would come from.
If no one else feels like providing any insight then I will
certainly have to see if I can come to some finality with an Adobe
rep.

I did a factory reset on my old laptop and lost my Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard. I have the serial number but need a download and can only find download for Pro version. When I enter my serial number (standard) into the Pro Installation it says the number is invalid. Any idea where I can download Standard version of 9? Thanks.

Kimg68365882 did you purchase Acrobat 9 Standard from Adobe directly?  If so and you choose to download the software instead of receive a CD then please see Find a download link on Adobe.com.
If you originally received the software on CD then please use a computer with an optical drive to copy the contents of the CD to a USB drive.

Can you do something in the javascript code where you have given specific IDs to each buttons in your menu? It could end up in something like "$('#menu_id').css('background-color', '#1B3E70');"

  • New iMac for Pro Use

When we replaced our last Pro Machine back in 2005 it was replaced with an iMac 20". Well we use it for Graphic Design and it served us well until the logic board failed. So we ordered a new i5 27" iMac. Anyone else use iMacs for pro Macs? We run Adobe creative suite 4, Freehand, Quark and office. Any issues with these apps running Snow leopard? Do you feel the performance of the iMac will do well with these apps?
By the way I found a place that repairs the logic boards in G5 imac so I removed and sent it out for repair. If all goes well this will be a nice hand me down for the kids. So far they love the G4 12" powerbook we handed down to them. 9 year old twins using macs which the prefer over the PC.

Sounds like you're on the track, I found a link from Apple that offers a competitive upgrade from Freehand to CS4 for $199. If your business is relying on it then that might be the road to take.
I've heard of some work arounds for your Laserwriter but not being a LW owner I don't have any experience. The good news is high quality Laser printers have come way down in price, I have 2 connected to my system (both HP's) that work great. The youngest one (Color LJ 2600N) is about 4 years old and works great as does my little black and white LJ 1012 which is my everyday work horse.
Another solution is HP has a new line of printers out that are inkjets but cost up to 50% less to operate than a laser and provides very high quality. If you at all interested the link is:

  • Mini vs. Quicksilver for pro apps--which would you recommend?

    Hi all,
I've been running the Adobe CS2 Suite of applications (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) on my Mini 1.42GHz/1GB RAM with not very pleasant results. Even if only one of the apps is open at any given time, the performance is painfully slow and the spinning beachball is always making an appearance.
Now, I've also got a Quicksilver 2002 800MHz/1GB sitting currently collecting dust in a corner of my office. I "upgraded" from the Quicksilver to the Mini because I had grown sick and tired of the incredibly loud fan inside the Quicksilver.
My question is this: Should I bring the Quicksilver out of retirement to do the Adobe CS2 work? I realize that the machine only has an 800GHz processer versus the Mini's 1.42 GHz, but it (the QS) also has a 7200rpm hard drive versus the mini's 4800rpm hard drive.
If I use the QS instead of the Mini, will I see a performance increase, a decrease, or just about the same?
I'd love to hear feedback from any of you out there who have used both the Quicksilver and the Mini, especially in conjunction with Adobe CS2 or similar CPU-hungry pro applications.
    Thanks!

I would agree with Doug - that typically for 'pro' application use, it would be better to use a 'pro' system, even if older.
As an example, I have a mini on my desk, running alongside a 6+ year old G4 tower. The G4 has had a second video card added to drive up to 3 displays, has had the original HD replaced by a high speed larger capacity unit, a second drive of similar spec has been added, a third SCSI drive is also in the system for booting specifically for photoshop, the RAM has been upped to 2Gb, and the original 450MHz processor has been replaced by a modest 1GHz unit. Total cost of the upgrades was less than the cost of a mini, the G4 is pretty much of similar 'speed', but the flexibility of the design allowing the additional and faster drives and video has made the G4 the system that gets used most when heavy duty workload is being done.
That's not to detract from the mini's great strengths - it's a fast, compact and powerful system for a wide variety of potential uses and that is more than ample for the majority of users. The only thing that lets it down is the lack of flexibility and expansion/upgrade options, and for pro users, those are often of great criticality.

  • Imac for Pro wedding photographer?

I am thinking of going to a Mac for my desktop, Have a macbook now for other things.
Any pros using the 24" Imac to edit photos?
Is the screen good enough for good color correction and can it be calibrated using monitor calibrators?
The other thing I need lots of storage, so using eternal hardrives will be necessary.
Also being locked into the one monitor. In the past I have upgraded my monitors every few years.
Would the power mac be the better more costly option for pros?

My experience with LCDs is that it's possible to calibrate them to reasonable accuracy, but they're not yet to the point where they compete with a high-quality CRT for color accuracy. There are some high-quality LCDs that are approching CRT quality, such as the LaCie units, but they're pricey. So it rather depends on how accurate you need to be (photo is a bit less demanding than prepress where you're risking a huge press run).
You might consider going with one of the 2.0Ghz iMacs with a 17" screen, then choosing an external, either CRT or LCD, for your primary "canvas" monitor. You'd then be able to choose the monitor that would best suit your needs.
    Regards.

  • Which editor is used for Pro*C?

    Hi All,
I am an Oracle Developer with strong PL/SQL experience. I want to learn Pro*C.
I searched for Pro*C editor but could not find any.
I have Oracle 10g Rel 2 database on my home PC. I have also installed Oracle Client 10g Rel 2.
1)Which editor is used to write programs in Pro*C ? I dont have Microsoft Visual C++ on my home PC.
2)Out of Pro*C and Pro*C++, which one is better ? which one is most commonly used?
3)Can anyone give me some guidelines on learning Pro*C?
    Thanks!
    Yogini

    Hi Yogini,
I have a feeling this is something easy that we are missing because of staring at the problem too long!
One way to check if proc.exe is getting called is to look at the .c file - it should be empty when initially added to the project/solution and then after proc.exe executes it should have the resulting C code in it. Can you verify that? I see the file in the build output, so we at least know it exists (which is good).
The custom build step output should be the first thing in the output window and the build log. The build log above seems incomplete.
For your reference, here's the BuildLog.htm for the test on my system:

  • I want to send G.B. song to 3rd party for pro-mixing

I want to send my G.B. song to a 3rd party for pro-mixing.
They need all the single tracks, but in a manner which is in perfect order as the song flows.
Is there a way? In wav files

    1. Solo each track? How?
click the headphone icon to solo a track
Will it end up in order?
there is no order, per se, you export each track one at a time
    2. Export ? It only says export to CD or send to itunes or iweb.
use send to iTunes, and after each export, rename the song in iTunes to whatever you want (likely the track number to make things easy for yourself later)
    3. without compression? Where is compression found?
sending to iTunes will send it uncompressed
    B.T.W. I am using G.B. 3.0.4 (104) Is this good?
GB4 might be better, but GB3 is fine.

  • Any plan for Pro*C to tolerate spaces in paths?

As of the most recent Pro*C downloaded for use with the Instant Client (11.2.something), it still can't tolerate spaces in any of its inputs.
Since Visual Studio installs by default into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio X\..., there's an immediate problem with specifying "include=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio X\VC\Include", whether on the command line or in pcscfg.cfg. Pro*C finds none of the .h files, and the whole process ends.
This is really complicating our build process, as there's just no good way to construct a generic build script (free of environment variables or a list of possibly conflicting include directories to cover all the bases).
Does anyone know whether there's any plan for Pro*C to function as an application in the year 2012, rather than 1995, by coping with spaces in these paths?

I can't speak to the Pro*C side of things, but you can find the short name for those paths using "dir /x".
    C:\>dir /x progr*

  • IMac requirements for Pro Tools 10

    Hi guys,
I'm currently working in a music studio as a producer. I've always been a Windows guy but as Pro Tools on the Mac is an industry standard, I need to migrate. I've never owned a mac before. I'm strongly swaying towards the iMac 27" with the 2.7ghz CPU and 4gb of ram. My question, does this system have enough punch for Pro Tools 10? I will often be using 10-15 tracks each with varying VSTs. Would this system struggle?
    Many thanks guys :)

Hello Joel, & a wam welcome!
27" should do it, but I'd go for the 3.4 GHz i7, add the 2 GB Graphics option, extended AppleCare, & add More RAM yourself, as much as you can afford, up to 32 GB...

  • Comments and Moderators settings in RoboHelp Server is for AIR files? Or can it used for Pro outputs as well?

Please explain how comments are enabled for Pro outputs in RH server. Is it only for AIR file, but i understand AIR output is not supported. Then how Moderators setting work for PRo outputs?

    Hi, PraTha
If I can amplify what Peter has mentioned above. Actually it is just a wordy way of saying what Peter posted in one sentence! Hopefully it will help a bit.
The relationship of AIR output and how it relates to Rh Server is admittedly confusing. In fact both are mutually exclusive.
The AIR Help output does indeed support commenting as well as the moderation of those comments by designated people.
However RoboHelp Server *does not* support commenting at this time. This feature has been requested and perhaps we will see it in a future release.
Unlike a help system delivered by HTTP from a web server (like RoboHelp Server's WebHelp Pro), the AIR Help output (.air file) is an application which is installed on the end-user's local computer. For security reasons this works well for distributing and updating a help system. Optionally, it also supports commenting but because the comments must be "stored" somewhere outside the local computer, there are serveral options. One is to store them on an internal server (such as a network drive behind a firewall).
So where might RoboHelp Server come into the picture at all? Here's the answer. Some organizations deploy both output flavors (AIR and RoboHelp Server) for different systems and different audiences. IF the RoboHelp authors *coincidentally* happen to have RoboHelp Server in their organization, then this server can be used to authenticate (usernames/passwords) for the moderation and storage of comments that AIR Help requires.
The bottom line is that presently RoboHelp Server does not support commenting for its own output, though it can as a convenient "host" for the comments and moderation of a separate AIR Help system.

  • Need clarification for MRP Run

    Dear SAP Guru,
Need the clarification for MRP Run:
1.At the time of MRP Run what is the status function for - shipping notification?
2.First i have run the mrp planning mode is normal after that i have some changes in material master , so planning mode is - RE Explode planning & Bom ? AT THE TIME OF MRP RUN  it is correct
3.In background MRP Run at MDBT - what is the PLANNING MODE ?
    4. How will work on automatic PO Create through MRP Run PR\S.?
Kindly give me the feedback , i am waiting for your reply.
    Thanks,
    Uma

    Hello Uma
1 - A shipping notification is a confirmation from the vendor that the material has been shipped.
2 - When you change your BOM or material master MRP settings, system automatically set a flag on the planning file to re-explode the BOM. Therefore, MRP automatically re-explode the BOM, even with planning mode 1. Planning mode 2 is only necessary when you need to force a new BOM explosion and I don't recommend you to use it frequently, as it may lead to performance issues. See my document MRP: Why shouldn’t I use planning mode 3 on a productive system? for more details.
3 - See notes 206666 MRP: Control parameters during planning and 135788 - Planning mode in material requirements planning.
