Clarification needed on DVD copying

Being new to mac I'm on a learning curve and would just like some clarification on DVD/CD copying in the following scenarios. I am aware that copying commercial/copyright DVDs is a no no so I'm not talking about those. I've read through previous postings and it's just got me more confused!
1) I want to copy some music CDs to play in the car (don't want the originals to get pinched!).
2) I have transferred some videos (i.e. wedding) onto a DVD to view on the TV - I want to make a copy.
3) I have recorded programmes off the TV onto a DVD that I want now want to copy for someone else to view on TV. (I guess that is similar to no. 2 above).
4) I have a tutorial DVD that doesn't appear to have copyright - I don't particularly want to copy it, but how would I if I did want to.
5) Documents and data that I've copied onto DVD out of the Documents folder that I want to back up (i.e. a back up DVD of a back up DVD!)
I am confused about whether to use iDVD, Disk Utility or whether I need to purchase other software that I've seen mentioned, such as MacTheRipper, Toast, Popcorn. Can anyone advise what I use for each of the above scenarios?
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane,
for 1) to 5) I personally would suggest SimplyBurns http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19778
I find it very easy in use, because it uses five buttons to choose from, depending what you want it to do. And also it's free.
For 1) 2) and 5) I would say, that you don't need to think of copyrights since either you own the original (for 1)) or you yourself own the copyright (2) and 5)).
For 3) I also don't see problems with copyright, as it is aired before and recording it and giving the recordings to friends should be allowed.
For 4) even though you made not have the copyright, you should be allowed to make a copy for backup purpose with SimplyBurns.
Regards
Stefan

  • Burning a DVD copy...

I need some clarification about burning a DVD copy of a disk I own.
I used "Jack-the-Ripper" on the disk first. Then, because of a post I saw somewhere, I put a blank DVD in my burner and ran "Hand Brake" which took over an hour grinding away and then reported the job was finished. However, nothing was written to my DVD.
So I loaded "Toast 8" and it appears to be burning the disk fine.
Before running Toast, I was able to play the movie from the HD video_ts file. This ability may be all I need since the whole purpose of this is to be able to view movies while on a trip.
Can someone explain what the purpose of Hand Brake is as it appears that I don't need to run it to burn a disk with Toast.

I use handbrake to create mp4 files for viewing on my iPod... I'm pretty sure it's just a format converter as opposed to a burning software.

im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5.
after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie.  after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov.  i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players.  what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player.  can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export.  im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time.  please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto.  thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=j

Thank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players.  thank you again for your reply *=)

  • How do I format a DVD copy for multi-zone or Zone 1?

How do I format a DVD copy for multi-zone or Zone 1?
Final Cut Pro X version 10.1.3
I have to send a DVD copy to a festival. They need it formatted for multi-zone or for Zone 1 (North America). How can I make sure it's formatted like that?

I don't claim direct experience with that, but I *believe* (as in "I could be wrong, but")  that if you burn a DVD from inside FCP X, the program will take a clue from the frame rate of your project: a 25fps project will produce a PAL DVD, a 29.97 will do NTSC.

  • In anticipating upgrading to Premiere Elements 13, I need to know what "gotchas" there might be in loading project files from version 10 (in case someone needs another DVD/Blu-Ray)

Particularly, can I load project files from version 10 (in case someone needs another DVD/Blu-Ray)

What computer operating system is involved?
There is no guarantee that a project created in an earlier version can be opened in a later one. Many times it can, but...
If you do try this, then please consider working from a copy of the project 10 project file and then trying to open that in 13/13.1.
Reason: projects created in an earlier version and then opened and edited in a later version cannot be opened again in the
    earlier version.
And, there is always the issue of maintaining the connect of the source media with the project file. Is this move from 10 to 13/13.1
happening on the same computer and are the source media in the same place where they were when they were first imported
into the 10 project. Disc menus consideration may enter into this depending on your details.

  • DVD copy of Windows 7

    Hello
I recently bought a new computer with WIN 7 64 bit. AND I've had problems for a few days to update my Windows, because it lacks a file service, BITS. When I bought my computer I have not received the installation DVD of Windows because it was preinstalled. But I still have a DVD copy of Windows.
How do I do to get one with the license number of my Windows?
    Thank you in advance.
    Carine

New notebooks are delivered with preinstalled operating systems but without DVD media.
Installations disc you must create alone using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator.
The shortcut for this tool you can find on the desktop.
Please create this DVD as soon as possible. This DVD can be used for OS installation. This preinstalled version will be activated and you don't need licence key.

Now, to make a copy of a DVD made on another program (other than idvd, imovie, etc.) how do I do that?

  • DVD Copying Program?

I don't seem to find any good DVD copying programs for the Mac. I have an immense amount of personal DVD's that I need to copy for my own personal archive. There are dozens of programs for windows such as DVDFABHD and DVD SHRINK. I have tried MacTheRipper and have had no success in the DVD copying process. Are there any good programs out there for the Mac that decrypt DVD's and copy them? Thanks.

That may cause a problem. If you are ripping protected DVD, you will be in fact infringing copyright law.

  • Running a PC via my Mac. Would I need a second copy of Word?

    Hello!
So I am needing to get Windows running on my Mac for a specific PC only App called Nvivo.
I am looking into the Fusion vs Parallel issue which both have their advantages and disadvantages. However, I need to know if I need a second copy of Word (ie a PC version) to read the information from my Mac word files then to be read by Nvivo on the PC side (for the cross-platform pollination to work)?
Does Parallels of Fusion have a feature that makes it so only one copy of word is required? (Sounds like wishful thinking I know!)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
all Word versions are Operating System - dependent.
An OSX Word won't work when running WIndows and vice versa.
But maybe the free OpenOffice will suffice for your needs in Windows.

Great hearing for you all! I thought I was all alone this past weekend. I did learn a lot this weekend. I really like the InDesign product.(half-the-battle) But to be helped by the prestigious “Sandee Cohen” was an honor indeed.”  I ordered the InDesign CC today.  Peter, I appreciate all the feedback on Lynda too. They are loaded with lots of good videos. Derek too honed in on one of the most important aspects!  Since I have been working with Word for most of the first portion of the book this will be a big help. I looked at the comments big help ! Thanks a ton ALL!  Have a wonder day or evening whenever you read this reply.

Am in need of a copy of DVDdrive for a macbook pro OS. how can i get a copy, please any one to help

If you are referring to the original system reinstall discs that shipped with every Mac before Lion came out you'll need to contact Apple with the serial # of your Mac and order a replacement set of them.
Or look on one of the Auction websites or places like iFixit.com for a replacement set.
If your Mac came new with any of the Download Only versions of OS X, Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks you don't need any discs to reinstall OS X. You use the Online Internet Recovery system or the built in Recovery HD partition inb the internal hard drive.
For the built in Recovery HD hold down the Command + r keys at startup. For the Online system hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen.

  • Which EM files need to be copied ?

    Hi,
In order to start the dbconsole on another server to access the same database, I copied the folowing files:
    $ORACLE_HOME/<hostname>_<ORACLE_SID>
    $ORACLE_HOME/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_<hostname>_<ORACLE_SID>
    $ORACLE_HOME/install/portlist.ini
    So far, it works...
Do you know any other files that I should copy as well ?
    Thanks
    JD
Why am I doing this ?
    - I'm on a SUN Cluster passive/active 2-servers system
    - server1 accesses database D while server2 is not used (the oracle instance and EM console run on this server)
    - if server1 dies, then server2 starts Oracle instance for database D and become the active node
    - The EM repository was created in server1 (and SYSMAN was created in the database)
    - the repository does not exist in server2 (the files mentioned above)
    - I can't create the repository when I'm on server2 because SYSMAN already exists in the database
    - Therefore, when the cluster switch from server1 to server2, I just copy these files so that "emctl start dbconsole" work on server2...
    - I do exactly the same when I switch back to server1
    - I can't create an OMS server, we're not using RAC nor DataGuard....

All you need is the copy of the folder with your machinename_sid over the next folder. The files in the $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/config are the generic files. You need the files and folder that contains the information of the configured EM on server 1. So copy that to server 2 and issue , emctl start/stop/status dbconsole.
That said, you mentioned that Symans already exists over the server 2,this means that there is already some repository available. What is it for ?
