Clarification of iPhoto/Photo Stream

Hi,
I am having difficulty understanding how iPhoto handles photos taken on an iOS device(iPhone or iPad).  Currently I have my iPhoto set to do an automatic import when taking picture.  I take picture on iPhone, it shows up on iPad photo stream.  It shows up in iPhoto photo stream file.  Now I delete the photo in the photo stream on iPhone.  It deletes on iPad photo stream and in iPhoto photo stream.  However the photo is in iPhoto in pHotos and events.  So what is the best way to manage this.  Should I turn off the 'Automatic import' in iPhoto or have it save the photo in iPhoto photos/events?  If so I suspect the photo will not be saved to photos and events.  So the photo will only be in the photo stream.  Whcih leads to my question 'when will the photo be saved in the photos or events in iPhoto.  If it sits in the Photo Stream is there any risk of losing the picture?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

Apples instruction are here - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
PS is not a storage place - it is a transmission place - it holds the lessor last 30 days or 1000 photos - if you want to keep photos you eed to import them into iPhoto - this can be automatic or manual as you choose - if it is manual then only the photos you manually import are saved in iPhoto - if it is automatic then eveny photo in PS is saved
It is pretty simple
So what is the best way to manage this.  Should I turn off the 'Automatic import' in iPhoto or have it save the photo in iPhoto photos/events?
That totally depends on what you want

    What is your iPhoto version?
Have you perhaps the "Shared" section in the Library sidebar hidden?  Hover with the mouse to the right of the title "shared" to reveal the hidden Show/Hide control and click "Show" to reveal the iCloud in the source list.

  • IPhoto/Photo Stream clarification

Forgive me if this has already been asked.
What I need clarification on is
    Here is my scenario.
I have Photo Stream enabled on all my devices(iphone, ipad & iMac)
When i take a picture it goes in to photo stream album on all devices(which essentially means the photos are in the cloud)
In iPhoto, there is a album called xxxx 2012 photo stream where xxxx is the month.
So is it safe to say that the photos are stored in my iPhoto library in the monthly photo stream album only?
Or do I have to turn on the automatic download setting in iPhoto to have the photos saved in iPhoto library?
This where I am getting confused. Given the above scenario where the photos are only in the photo stream is it possible they could be lost if for some reason all the photos in the photo stream get deleted?
I guess my main question is are the photos in photo stream just sitting in the cloud until I manually move them into my iPhoto library.  I just took a picture with iPhone and the picture is in Photo Stream and camera roll.  So if in camera roll does that mean the photo will be saved to permanent location in iPhoto.
As you can see I am quite confused with workflow when using Photo Stream.  Apple has made the process very convaluded.
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

you need to read up on PhotoStream
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
PS is temporary - the lessor of the  last 1000 photos or the last 30 days - once either of these is passed the photos go away unless you import them to iPhoto - it is NOT a web archive
There are two ways to import to iPhoto  - manually and automatically - manually you drag photos from PS to iPhoto - automatically you check the import autpmatically box in the iPhoto preferences and the photos are automatically imported into an event named MMM YYYY Photo Stream - no albums are automatically created or used
As you can see I am quite confused with workflow when using Photo Stream.  Apple has made the process very convaluded.
It actually is very simple if you read the instructions

  • IPhoto photo stream time zone/ duplicates issue

I've got a bunch of duplicate photos in my iPhoto library on my Macbook from both manually importing photos from iPhone when connected and from syncing via Photo Stream.
I've since disactivated Photo Stream, but still had duplicate photos on my computer.
I've merged all the albums called "October Photo Stream" with the other imports into one big list sorted by date.
The problem is, I was travelling quite a bit across different time zones, so they're not all really in order. It seems the Photo Stream copy of the photo (the one with the keyword attached) has the time and date as my "home" timezone, not as the "local" timezone as per the time where the photo was taken.
    Is this by design?
I'd now like to remove all the duplicates and was thinking I'd just search for Photo Stream keyword, then select all those pics and delete.... the problem is I'm not sure which ones actually have duplicates as they don't all have duplicates! I really can't figure out how/why some exist as duplicates and others don't... perhaps something to do with when I was/wasn't near a wifi network (applicable while I was travelling but less so for pictures at home as my wifi is always on at home).
This photo stream "feature" is confusing as ****, and don't even get me started on the other iCloud services like docs... could they have designed it any more counter intuitive if they tried?
    Any advice/ assistance appreciated.
Further, if I reactivate photo stream in future, how do I stop this behaviour from happening again?

I've noticed this same problem. I just got back from a trip overseas and the time on all my iPhone photos imported from the photo stream is wrong by two hours (the time difference). It seems a bit stupid to have the photos time stamped with your home time zone, and it means that when I imported the photos from my camera they're all out of order and I need to adjust the time on all the iPhoto photos. That's not particulary hard, it just seems unncessary. I hope someone form Apple notices this and fixes the problem.

  • Why do all of my iPhoto photo stream photos no appear on my iPhone photo stream?

I have a MAC that I use to store my images on in iphoto.   I have manually put several photos (jpg) into iCloud in iPhoto in order to access them from my iphone but some of them will not appear on my photo stream on my iphone.  I have an iphone 5 with the latest software update.   My Photo stream is on as well as photo sharing.  One of my problems may be that we store our photos on my account but I sync my itunes with my husband's account.   Not sure how to rectify all of this...

After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning Photo Stream issues:

  • Why iPhoto photo stream re-download photos when restarted

My iPhoto phto stream re-downloads the pictures everytime my computer restarts.  Photo stream doesn't turn off, just re-download, it is fraustrating when you have many pictures and re-downloads them all the time.  Is there a fix for this?

Do you have HDR turned on on your iPhone camera? And if you do, is it keeping the original JPG? If it is, it will save two versions of each photo.
Do you have HDR turned on:
    Go to Camera App
    Tap Options on screen
See if HDR is turned on.
    Turn HDR off.
    Are you saving the JPG:
    Settings > Photos
    Turn off Keep Normal Photo

  • IPhoto Photo Stream turns off on launch

Every second or third time I open iPhoto and click on the photo stream tab there are no pictures there.  I then have to enable photostream (again) and the pictures download.
How can I keep the photo stream enabled so I don't have to repeatedly download my pictures?

Are we the only ones who have this annoying problem?
And did you ever hear from anyone at Apple?

  • Getting images into iPhoto photo stream. how?

I've imported an image from my desktop to iPhoto. i try to drag it to photo stream from the last import or events windows but photo stream won't accept it. how do i get it in there?

I ended up doing a manual rebuild. There must have indeed been a file or folder corruption or something. I will rebuild the albums, and it looks like everything will be fine. Thanks.

  • Iphoto photo stream vs iphone photo stream

kind of think I might be being a bit of a noob, but hopefully not...
Ok, I have Photo Streams set up on my iphone... I choose exactly which photos I want to share to which recipeints who are subscribed etc. Simple.
Now, on my iphoto on my Mac, when I am about to consider switching on iphoto, it says it will share the last 30 days of images? well I don't want to do that, all I want to do is click and drag images to those same photo streams on my mac as I do on my phone? is this not possible? or is the only way to email myself and then as the images to the various photo streams on the iphone?
    hope that makes sense?

Thanks for your advice, but sahred photo streams still doesnt appear at the bottom?
Anyway, I've been trying to investigate ever since as I really would like to add to my same photostreams I am sharing and set up from my iphone... What I have found out is:
In icloud, it looks like I have photostream set up, ticked but I can see that its set up as my @me.com account? Really don't know why that is as I thought it was .com
Going back to my iphoto, I went into Preferences and then clicked on accounts and I see I have a @me and a @mac? so I thought I would remove @me to see if that helped? no idea if it would...
Anyway... I switched off photostream in iphoto and then twitched it back off, and nothing is showing for my photostreams.
I try sharing some photos to my photostream.... and once they upload, they don't show on my phone's shared photostreams.
Next thing I guess is..... logout of icloud of my @me account but it warned me about contacts which now really worries me? will I lose all my emails, contacts, diary syncing with my phone?  help!........

  • IPhoto/photo stream

I am new to iMac. I plugged in my iPhone to upload all my trip pictures into an event in iPhoto. Only some of them came and the others seem to be in photo stream album. I wanted to move them from photo stream and put them into an event. I dont think I am understanding photo stream very well.

    Hello RossSE,
Thank you for your question.  It sounds like you are trying to organize your photos in iPhoto, but Photo Stream has imported some of your photos and you manually imported some photos.
When you enable Photo Stream in iPhoto, photos on the iCloud server are imported to your library in an event for that month by default.  My Photo Stream stores up to 1000 photos for up to 30 days, so you may need to connect your iPhone to import videos or photos that did not make it to My Photo Stream because of the 1000 photo limit or the 30 day limit.
You can learn more about Photo Stream here:
    My Photo Stream overview
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#phtac7ec5f4
If you would like to turn off the automatic import of photos and only manually import photos by connecting your iPhone to the computer, you can disable the automatic import in iPhoto > Preferences > iCloud:
Turn on My Photo Stream in iPhoto
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht7aaadf50
Alternatively, you can rearrange the photos in Events using the steps in this article:
    Move photos between events
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht6d6094b4
Additionally, you may want organize your photos using Albums.  Personally, I prefer organizing my iPhoto library with Albums:
A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
You can create photo albums to:
Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
Gather a decade of anniversary photos
Find more information about organizing your library using standard Albums or Smart Albums at the following link:

  • IPhoto Photo Streaming says "Sep 2012 Photo Stream" only

I can't find the full Photo Stream. Also, photos are updating between my iPhone and iPad, but not to iPhoto on my iMac.

What are you expecting?  It is Sept 29. Your "full" PhotoStream contains the lessor of latest 30 days photos or  the latest 1000 photos

  • IPhoto / Photo Stream Inconsistencies

I'm having issues with my photo stream and photos I recently downloaded.
I have an iMac (running OS X v10.9.5). I used my iPhone 5S, a GoPro and a Nikon D40 to download photos from a recent vacation.
I have attached a screen shot of the Events view from iPhoto. Notice the empty "shells" which would normally contain photos. Those are all from the most recent D40 download. When I click into any of those events, it says there are no photos.
However, if I go over to my Photo Stream (both on the iMac and on the iPhone), I see the photos from the D40 mixed in with the iPhone photos. So I know they downloaded (I got the confirmation of download at the time).
I thought I could just grab those particular photos in the Photo Stream and drag them back to the Events on the left - essentially dumping them back on to my iMac. When I do that it asks me if I'd like to import a duplicate file, but on the side-by-side comparison the "existing" photo is blank. So it's like the system knows there is something in those empty events folders, but nothing is showing up.
I also downloaded iCloud for Windows to my work PC, thinking I could just save them to that machine and then import to the iMac by USB. However, the Photo Stream on the Windows machine only shows 80 photos, all from several weeks ago. Essentially, that Photo Stream is not updating with the most recent photos. I checked my settings, did a restart, and followed the directions from the Apple Support pages online. Still no luck.
After reading some help threads here, I also checked the Master folder in my iPhoto library. None of the D40 photos are there either.
My end goal is to ensure I save those photos that appear in my Photo Stream in some form or fashion.
Any ideas on how I can get them to appear in my Events / Photos in iPhoto?

What version of iPhoto are you running?
Do you have your iPhoto iCloud preferences set up to download and import all photos from your mobile devices as shown below?
If the Automatic Import checkbox isn't checked you'll have to select the D40 photos in the My Photo Stream section, Control (right) - click on one and select Import from the contextual menu.
Note:  you didn't add the screenshot to your original post.

  • IPhoto photo stream won't work

Since iPhoto was updated in December, my iphoto library somehow became corrupted, crashed and wouldn't open. I've had lots of attempts at trying to find out what was wrong as this only affected the iphoto on my macbook pro.  My ipad & iphone are both working fine.  Eventually, after several attempts at trashing the library, rebuilding databases, repairing permissions etc, I eventually gave up and extracted all the original photos from the files and saved them in a separate file.  I then trashed the iphoto library altogether and also the software and left it for a while.  Then I installed my iphoto library from a saved backup file from last year before I had a problem and also installed a fresh copy of the software from the App store.  This is now working but I still can't get the iphoto stream to work in icloud.  I can switch the photo stream on and off in system preferences but in the iphoto preferences the tick box just won't stay ticked!!  So I still can't stream my photos - most of which I take with my iphone and really miss the feature of having syncronized photos on all my devices.
I'm really pulling my hair out on this one and am at my wits end!! I really don't know where to go from here & have tried just about everything.  It's very nice having Iphoto displaying all my photos, but they're all now old and I want it to display all my new photos too.  Please can someone out there help me?? I'd be so grateful to get this wretched problem sorted.  Thank you very much!!

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • IPhoto & photo streaming not working together

why does iPhoto 9.2.1 crash when photo streaming is enabled?

Had already checked I was logged in and the message in iPhoto said I was logged in, iCloud said I was logged in, but iPhoto just wouldn't let me turn on the streaming and said to check iCloud settings. Then out of the blue it's started working. Quite wierd!
