Clarification on different Safari privacy settings

Recently I was reviewing the different privacy settings in Safari and between web searches and the help file I wasn't able to find the difference between these two settings.
Allow from current website only
and
Allow from websites I visit
I tried both settings out and visited the same websites and it appears to track/add the same cookies.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on the differences between these two options.
Thanks

Hey there jnepp,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I see that you’ve already searched Help, but I’d like to share this section of Safari Help in case you haven’t already seen it. The information on the webpage below should clarify the differences between those privacy settings in Safari.
Manage cookies and website data
Allow from current website only: Safari accepts cookies and website data only from the website you’re currently visiting. Websites often have embedded content from other sources. Safari does not allow these third parties to store or access cookies or other data.
Allow from websites I visit: Safari accepts cookies and website data only from websites you visit. Safari uses your existing cookies to determine whether you have visited a website before. Selecting this option helps prevent websites that have embedded content in other websites you browse from storing cookies and data on your Mac.
Cheers,
-Jason

  • Safari privacy settings blank??? HELP, PLZ

I open Safari. No problem. I click Safari>preferences>privacy ... and there is a blank area under the privacy icon. No writing, no options showing, no way to config cookies-NOTHING! Can anyone help me to restore these settings to the privacy tab?
    Thank You

    Uninstall SIMBL as follows.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar, then enter the following text in the box that opens:
    /Library
A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Application Support/SIMBL
    LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • Privacy settings in safara

    Hi,
I regularly remove cookies, etc. from my safari privacy settings as they appear due to internet browsing.  I have never had any issue with removing unwanted sites.  However, just recently a plug-in for what appears to be an IP address starting with 174.120. appeared and it will not allow me to remove it.  I attempted to locate this plug-in in my library for internet plug-ins but I don't see it there in this format.
Does anyone know what this may be and how and if it should be removed?
Thank you for any helpful information on this.
    Have a good week.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

  • Flash media player in my browser resets security/privacy settings!

Why do the last three versions of flash media player in my browser reset my security and privacy settings leaving my system totally vunerable???  I have set and reset multiple times both locally and on the global settings panel on the Adobe web site.

Reguardless of what is "encoded" into Shockwave Flash streaming player the fact that the settings default back to accept update notifications, allow peer to peer sharing, and storage settings still exist since the last several program updates.
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.htm l
All programs have been updated, re-installed to all current versions. Checked everyday the player will reset anywhere from one to five days from being set. I also check before and after any utilities run on my systems to verify the change is not caused by any resident commands or software. Yes this happens on different computers and OS.
I run all maintenance and security manually, including updates of any kind.

  • Does Google  ignore the privacy settings of iOS ?

In the privacy settings of iOS I have disabled access to my pictures for the Google+ App on my iPhone and on my iPad. However I still get emails from Google+ that it uploaded pictures I took with my iPhone. Is Google cheating here ?

Obviously, this did not solve the question. I don't know how it got marked that way or how to unmark it, but congratulations on the ten points!
The cells inspector is not interesting. It shows the same thing for both the correct and the incorrect cells. The text inspector is the same for both cells also. I have checked all the panes in the inspector and can't find a setting that is different.
I have found a workaround on another Numbers document with the same problem. I selected the entire table and reapplied the table format to the selection, then I went back and set the format to the various columns and rows. The problem is that if you paste in information from another document, the results are unpredictable, sometimes conforming to the destination formatting, sometimes not.
I'd email you the document, but I'd need an address.

  • Connot get it to accept cookies; privacy settings are re-set each time after I change them. How can I get the privacy setting to stick and accept cookies?

I need to accept cookies to log into a technical site. I clear all cookies and the history and follow the instructions for setting privacy options to "Use custom settings for history" and to accept all cookies. When I go back to try logging into the site, it still tells me cookies aren't accepted. When I go back to Options-Privacy, the setting has been changed back to "Remember history" from "Use custom settings for history". I have done this about 5 times, trying various options, closing Firefox after making the change and starting it again - nothing works. How can I get the privacy settings to stay as I set them and accept cookies?

Blocking all cookies in Safari does not work. Deleted cookies will not stay deleted. There are numerous threads on this going back years, both in these forums and elsewhere. Many claim to have submitted the issue to Apple, but I have never seen anyone post a reply.
I have seen many suggested fixes that involve finding the cookies file, some including Terminal manipulations, and none seems to work universally. I can find noplace where Apple addresses this officially with an actual Apple-approved explanation or how-to.
Bottom line, your browser's security features should do what they claim: delete cookies. When they come back without ever even visiting another page, this is clearly not working in the way a reasonable user would expect.
Bottom line, Safari does not protect users' privacy in the way it pretends to and, after so many years of this issue, it appears that Apple wants it this way.
Having spent way too much time on this, I realize the choice is between Safari which is pretty well optimized; Firefox which is a lot pokier, at least for me; and Chrome, which I assume funnels personal information directly to Google.

  • Need to run 2 versions of FF, diferent privacy settings

I have FF12 and it is set up the way I want it to so I feel that my anonymity is protected. Problem is now I am starting to do research and I need to have different privacy settings.
Is there a way to run 2 versions of FF AND have different privacy settings and different add ons?
I will be doing this with a laptop more often (mac) and will not have an external drive available and I do not want to partition the HDD.
    Thanks for any help

Not sure how to explain how, or why this has worked, it just does and therefore I am happy. I followed what Tyler said to do to get a new profile. Easy enough. I now have a "default" and a "research" profile.
Next I wanted to work out how to do what cor-el had mentioned, having 2 different versions of FF and each having their own profile. A lot harder. I used the command
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P "My Profile" -no-remote,
with changes of course, as I am on a mac and not a windoze. Nothing worked and Terminal bashed every time I tried to do something. Thus I installed version 11 after renaming FF to FF1. With FF11 loaded and in applications I renamed it to ff-p and drug it to the dock. Opening both FF 11 and 12 gave me the default profile so I had to go back and uncheck the ask at start up. Once I did this I was able to open 12 with the default and had no problems. I opened the 11 with the research profile and it started as I had no other FF and it had never been opened. So I took a chance and updated it to 12 for security. Restarted it and the same great new page came up!!
I got a couple of add ons and should be fine.
You both introduced me to great websites/pages and they helped me understand many things. It was more difficult to implement what cor-el showed me simply because I have a mac and most of that is for the other platform. But I am able to open and use ''both'' FFs and have a different profile associated with both. I now hope this allows me to do what I am wanting to do. Tomorrow will be the real test!!

  • Privacy settings keep resetting on my mac

    First of all...
    I'm running: OS X Version 10.9.5
Processor: 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Starting today safari opens pop-ups anytime I click on a link or button. I also noticed that my privacy settings keep changing from "third parties and advertisers" to "never."
I have cleaned out my history, deleted all cookies, and started my computer in safe mode. Nothing has helped so far. I have no idea what has caused this. I have had my computer for 4 years or so and this is the first problem I have had. PLEASE HELP! (p.s. I couldn't even had that emoji without a popup appearing.)

You may have inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple and you don't need to download anything to fix it.
For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware. Although you should read the entire document, the Recovery Procedure at the end describes how to solve your particular problem.

  • Privacy Settings: "Ask websites not to track me"

When you select the "Ask websites not to track me" in the privacy settings of Safari, it states, "Select to ask sites, particularly third parties (including advertisers), not to track you. Some third parties keep track of your browsing activities when they serve you content, which enables them to tailor what they present to you. If this option is selected, each time Safari fetches content from a website, Safari adds a request not to track you."
Does anyone know how this "Safari adds a request not to track you" work?  Doesn't it send info about you anyways by having to enabling this feature?  -Do sites have to comply? (Is there law that business have to comply by -if one wants to opt out of being "tracked?")
Is there anyway to test if this actually works?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the link.  Informative.  I figured it was fairly new.  I hope there's more info out there that would explain it more in detail.  For example what info, if any, is my Mac sending requests not to track me on their sites. -And what services would sites need to be running, and if they would have to adhere to any law to comply with such a request.

  • Netstream.send() privacy settings

I'm using Netstream.send() to transfer a file between two users.
A previous discussion can be found here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/890122?tstart=0
It works well except of flash settings issue.
When trying to access a camera or mic the Flash ask the user for permissions automatically.
When trying to send a file, the Flash player doesn't show the privacy popup.
If the user doesn't set his privacy to Allow, the file transfer fails.
    There are two issues:
    1. The privacy settings popup isn't shown automatically.
    2. The privacy popup ask permissions to access the camera and mic and doesn't say anything about data transfer.
Am I missing something or are the above real issues?
    Thanks

the P2P access dialog will only show when using RTMFP Groups (NetGroup or a group NetStream).  if you're just doing NetStream.send() on a 1-to-1 (NetStream.DIRECT_CONNECTIONS and new NetStream(netConnection, peerID)) P2P connection, then there is no P2P access dialog.
if you're doing groups and the P2P access dialog isn't showing up, there are a few possible causes:
      1) for some reason you at one point selected "Deny" *and* checked "Remember"; in that case, Flash Player won't present the dialog and will behave as though you clicked "Deny"
      2) Flash Player's window or region in the browser page is too small for the P2P access dialog.  if the P2P access dialog can't be presented because the window is too small, it will behave as though you clicked "Deny"
      3) there is a known bug in Flash Player when using wmode=direct (which you would use for Stage Video) where, when you set wmode=direct, the P2P access dialog won't be displayed, and the behavior will be as though you clicked "Deny".  this issue will be fixed in a future release of Flash Player. to work around this, set wmode to a different value.

  • Skype won't let me set privacy settings.

Your system will not allow me to set the 'privacy' settings. I'm selecting 'only accept calls from contacts',  no cookies, no this, no that.......and clicking 'save'. But all that happens is your blasted system keeps giving me a message saying "your call forwarding can't be set up at this time, please try again'   ........and then it resets to the 'default' settings, ie allowing calls from 'anyone' and allowing cookies etc. I don't want to set the damned call-forwarding and was not trying to. Everything I was setting up had nothing to do with call forwarding!   It's utterly frustrating, time-wasting and a rip-off.  Obviously it's set up this way so we have no choice but to accept cookies so Skype can monitor our 'preferences' and sell us other stuff.  This really feels dishonest to me, and Skype has plummeted in my estimation.

    Hi, Ann-11,
I understand your frustrations, however Skype is not the rip-off or cookie-crumbling monster you think it is!  Please do post back with what computer/operating system or device you are trying to set up Skype on; diagnosing and resolving the issues are platform-dependent as Skype runs on and works very differently depending upon the system and device.

  • Privacy settings failure

i have all my privacy settings to "contacts only" and yet i'm still getting random messages from random strangers asking to chat. it's really annoying! it's happened before.  can anyone tell me how to fix it for good?
    i'm on mac, version 5.2.0.1523
    cheers!

I doubt that I could add anything superior to that offered by TheUberOverlord, however in support of your frustration, I and all of the Skype users whom I support have our profiles locked down for privacy, and we all still intermittently receive unwelcome "friend" requests.  Some of these are lewd and go beyond "I thought you looked interesting" requests.   We all have different MS Win computer configurations and use different editions of Skype, mine being the newest and kept most up-to-date.  I, too, would like to know from where these things originate so I could stop them.
Remember also to make sure the privacy settings in your profile aren't clicked -
    - to allow your online status to be shown on the web,
    - to accept Skype browser cookies, or
    - to allow Skype to use non-personally identifiable info about you when serving 3rd party ads.
That said, it has not stopped the roque friend requests from appearing!  All we seem to be able to do is block the unwanted user and click on Report Abuse.
