Clarification on syncing

Can someone explain the difference between "sync only checked songs and music" and "manually manage music and videos" in the Summary options section?
I just did a sync to bring in a ringtone and lost all my music - I had "sync only..." selected.
Am I correct that I if I have "manually manage..." checked, I can safely sync other things (contacts, ringtones, etc.) and my music will remain untouched?

Yes you can certainly Sync Cal on one computer and music on another without any issues. There is a couple things you want to do
1. In the Summary screen tell it not to auto sync when connected
2. Choose Sync only checked songs and videos and ensure you only sync audio from 1 source.
When you move from 1 machine to another just choose Sync. If you get the "Your tied to another system" select cancel. This will prevent any data loss.
This should not really occur though as long as your not set to auto sync and set for sync selected songs and videos.
I personally sync on 6 different machines for testing.. Contacts on 1, Music on another, Videos on another etc. And the only time I have an issue is if I go in and change any settings in one of those categories.
Personally on computer 1. It shows I have music set to sync, Connect it to any other computer, and I go to music and the option to Sync is unchecked. As the iPhone remembers which machine I wanted to sync with. And ignores that setting when connected to any other computer. If I had checked marked sync music on PC 2. Then it would of given me I am synced with another iTunes message.

  • Clarifications on "syncing" systems -- i.e. exporting/importing catalogues.

    If I want to simply "sync" two computers so that changes or additions I made on one system will be incorporated on the other, do I need to first "export" a catalogue and then import it onto the other system, or can I simply "import" directly without first exporting a separate catalogue? In other words, does the current catalgue (what used to be referred to as a "library") exist as something that can be imported onto another system without first requiring a separate "export"?
    Also, what happens if changes are made on BOTH systems when I do the import? What happens if changes have been made to the same shot on both systems? I've looked over various literature on this subject, but I haven't been able to determine how robust LR is at dealing with all the various permutations in this regard.
    Thanks,
    Larry

    >As I understand it, a catalog is a catalog, and you are always in a catalog. No need to export unless you want to create a subset.
    Can anyone confirm this? A similar questions was answered in another thread saying you could not do this, so now I've received two answers that directly contradict each other, and don't know which is accurate.
    I'm looking for the easiest way to "sync" two systems where changes may have been done on BOTH systems to different pictures. The end result should be that both systems have all the same information on them. I'm still unclear what the specific steps would be to achieve this.
    On this note, what if the same photo had new edits on BOTH systems? Is there a way of syncing "both ways" so that both systems ended up showing all the edits from BOTH systems in different snapshots or virtual copies or ???
    Thanks,
    Larry

  • Sync help / clarification

    My old hard drive crashed.
    I now have a brand new system.
    I want to re-sync my iphone so I can continue to add music.
    When I re-sync, it warns that it will overwrite existing files. Does that mean it will erase the playlists/music/pictures, etc. on my phone? I don't necessarily need to get these back off my phone, but I don't want to have to rebuild all my existing playlists.
    Thanks for any input.

    Same problem here. My old computer crashed and I cannot get the music from my iPhone 3G to my iTunes on my brand new computer. It says it wants to erase the exsisting files and replace it with whats on my harddrive now, which is nothing. It was able to sync my contacts and bookmarks, but no music or pics! I have almost 3000 songs and I would hate to have to start over again and re-purchase the cd's I have already. Any solutions to this problem? Seems kinda odd that I cannot just download what's on my iPhone now. And no, I did not and cannot get my exsisting files from my old computer.

  • Need Clarification on JDBC--RFC Sync

    Hi All,
    in JDBC----RFC Sync scenario, do we use BPM to get the response from the RFC??
    Why because JDBC is not having the Sync nature.

    Hi,
    its not necessary to use BPM to get response with out BPM also we can get the response. Better try to avoid BPM because of the performance issue.

  • Sync library and podcast clarification

    I had to erase my computer fully after it got a problem from an Apple update but my old iTunes library - whilst deleted on the computer - has remained on my iPod.
    I thought it wasn't working for a while so have been using my new iTunes loading on some CDs (though not everything i own as on the iPod) and purchasing music. However, I now find the iPod has resurrected itself apparently so I'd like to start using again all together.
    I have transferred the purchased music onto iTunes and that's great.
    However just have a couple of questions and confirmations for syncing the two:
    1. By agreeing to sync it says that the iPod memory will be replaced with that from iTunes. Does that mean that the library filed on my iPod will combine with the iTunes library or does it mean that the iPod will be wiped and I will have my more minimal CD library (although all my purchased tunes)?
    2. What happens to the podcasts from my iPod? Is there a way to ensure they are transferred into my iTunes library - or are they non transferrable (which seems to be the case)
    Thanks for any advice.

    "1. By agreeing to sync it says that the iPod memory will be replaced with that from iTunes. Choosing Erase and Sync will wipe everything off the iPod and replace it with what you currently have in your iTunes library, it won't amalgamate the two sources. Whatever you have on the iPod that isn't in iTunes will be erased.
    While the the transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Clarification with Google Sync and Gmail account

    I recently linked my gmail account to my phone and prior to this i was using google sync to link my google calendar and phone calendar. After adding my gmail i began to get multiple contacts and calandar entries...Does anyone know why?

    Hello,
    Currently, the BIS system provides for the wireless synchronization of Calendar and Contacts with Google, with no need to synchronize via USB tether via the Desktop Software. So, if you have activated this new BIS feature AND also have some other channel for loading that information to your BB, that would indeed result in duplication. You will need to shut one or the other off and just have one channel for synchronizing that data.
    Good luck!

  • What gets wiped out if I sync my phone to iTunes

    Sorry for starting a new thread with this. It is really a followup/clarification to another post, but that one won't let me reply/comment
    In https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141 wjosten wrote:
    By design, the iPhone will sync iTunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL iTunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you replaced your computer, or hard drive, your phone will see this as a "new" computer. The iTunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else,
    The prompt from iTunes if very ominous. I want to clarify what it is going to wipe out.
    We have two iPhones and an iPad. I don't know if either of the phones have been synced to iTunes on any of our computers. We use iCloud backup, so we have not felt the need to backup to our Windows PCs. When the iPad was first purchased, the version of iOS it had required iTunes to activate it. I think that was iOS 4. We immediately updated to iOS 5 and life was good. But that first activation was done on an old laptop that is long gone. Anything we do with iTunes and these devices these days, we want to do on my wife's newer laptop.
    So, I say all that to clarify that I have no clue what system (if any) these devices are officially synched to. I just want to rip a seminar from an mp3 CD to my iPhone. Imagine my surprise when iTunes tells me my only option is for it to first wipe out my phone
    I have the normal ton of pictures and a few videos I have captured on the phone. The normal ton of apps. And I recently entered the 20th century (yeah, still catching up) and purched a CD on iTunes on my phone. This is my first attempt at transfering music (really a seminar, an MP3 CD) to my phone. I have not synced any pictures to my phone from iTunes on any PC. But I have recently downloaded a couple pictures of my grandson from Facebook. Those all appear as if I took them on this phone. I also have the email client set up to access 4 different mail servers (iCloud, Gmail, AOL, work) and calendar set up to access work, Google Calendar, and iCloud. And a ton of contacts. All of that is backed up to iCloud.
    So do I have anything I need to "extract ... using third party software"? Or will backup to iTunes on the PC get everything?
    Is it really going to wipe out everything on my phone before transfering this one audio CD?
    really disappointed at how difficult this is.

    did you backed it up? with itunes or icloud backup?

  • Why is there missing info in the windows address book fields after syncing iphone 4 contacts?

    I am reaching the end of my rope trying to deal with syncing/backing up contacts and other "non copyright protected" content from my iphone 4 and my desktop (and preferably my laptop as well).  I've spent literally days trying to solve this problem with ultimately no solution.  So, cutting through my MULTIPLE issues and focusing on one primary I need help backing up my contacts from my iphone 4 to ANY computer.  Here is what I am working with:
    A relatively ancient (5yrs) Window XP desktop with virtually no contacts in Windows Address Book and with only the native Outlook Express on it.
    An iphone 4 ios 4.3.1 that was initially and is still setup/synced with the above XP box (minus checking the sync contacts box).
    An iphone 4 contact list that is primarily populated by about 200 contacts transfered from an old ATT SIM from the previous ancient phone.
    A new Windows 7 laptop that I would love, love, love to use in conjuction with the XP for syncing/backing up not protected, personal data and iphone purchases.
    So, with that in mind I have been syncing my phone with the XP w. the "manual manage music..." box checked and all other syncing options other than apps unchecked.  I wanted to backup by contacts for emergency recovery and to allow sycncing for the increasing business contacts.  Should be easy right?  Not so much.  I tried clicking the "sync contacts w/ windows address book" option and then synced.  I go to WAB and the contact list is there.  However, if I look w/in each contact the fields are not filled in.  If it was a contact that had name, number, address on my phone the WAB version has the name listing but nothing in the number/addy fields.  Now, this is true w/ virtually every contact and most were from that SIM transfer.  HOWEVER, contacts that I added ON the iphone (ie manually w/ the phone) DO have complete information.
    So, what do I do to make an actual, complete backup of all the contacts on my iphone w/o having to manually reinput all of the real information??  I'm frankly terrified that in trying multiple solutions I will lose all my phone contacts which at this point in my life would be absolutely devistating (ie I would probably lose my job).  If it is a matter of newer hard/software I would gladly sync to the new Win 7 laptop instead but there I run into the other aggrivation of apple making it so bloody difficult to use one ios device with more than one personal computer.  I'm dumbfounded and frustrated on soooooo many levels and would send countless good vibes to anyone who can help!   Advice?  Solutions?  I'd promise my first born but who wants that these days...?  Help, please! ;-)
    BTW, sorry for the long wind but I'll add on my "optimal solution" if anyone is feeling especially helpful and has an answer:
    I'd like to be able to plug my iphone into both my XP desktop and my Win 7 laptop and sync/backup to both freely (that is after all the real intent of syncing, non?)  I don't care about music, videos, or other protected content.  I manage that manually and frankly, I can do without having on the iphone as long as I can accomplish being able to sync/backup/restore all the iphone stuff like apps, settings, personal info, and contacts to both the desktop and the laptop.  The purpose is that I need to be able to use and recover everything (on the road or at home) if either my laptop or my iphone dies/disappears.  But, understanding impermanence as it relates to portable devices, I want a solid backup of everything at home waiting on my desktop.  Is that really too much to ask apple???

    Seriously folks?  I know it was long but I added all info to negate a need for endless back/forth clarifications.  No answers???
    FYI, i tried syncing contacts to google/gmail and it was a total clusterF as well.  No gmail contacts, synced iphone, gmail contacts populated w/ all info but w/lots of repeat entries.  Used seek and merge repeats in gmail and then resync but no such luck.  Lots of iterations and nothing but fails.  Seems everytime the phone and the gmail lists are "as desired" a new sync puts a ton of repeats back into gmail or onto phone.  Still perplexed and still needing help....
    pretty please....

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Does email sync over iCloud also support sync of non iCloud email accounts?

    I use mac, ipad and iphone with sync over iCloud. While ipad and iphone sync emails of both iCloud and non iCloud email accounts, email sync between mac and ios devices works only for iCloud email account.
    Please clarify whether iCloud should sync emails of both iCloud and non iCloud email account across all apple devices (mac, iphone, ipad) or it is not designed to do so.
    Thank you.

    Thank you for clarification.
    However, after rechecking everything again, I can cofirm that full sync of all email accounts (icloud and non icloud) on all apple devices works perfectly as long emails originate from ios device. Unfortunately, this does work if email is sent from mac.
    Thanks again.

  • ICloud Calendar will not sync with iCloud

    I am at a complete loss here.  I have my work MBA running Yosemite and connected to my iCloud account.  I also have a personal MBP, iPhone and iPad, all running the latest OS and Patch, all connected to my iCloud account.
    For 98% of it, it works and syncs perfectly.  Except for the calendar on my MBA.  Calendar works and syncs perfectly everywhere else, MBA works perfectly with iMessage, FaceTime, Contacts, Keychain, etc, etc, etc.
    Basic troubleshooting I have performed:
    Rebooted MBA (obviously)
    Attempted to remove calendars from syncing with my iCloud account (unsuccessful) - will not remove calendars.
    Attempted to remove entire iCloud account from MBA (unsuccessful)
    i have signed out everywhere on my MBA, when I go to System Preferences > iCloud and attempt to sign out, it fails.
    When I go to Internet Accounts, iCloud keeps coming back as "INACTIVE" with nothing checked.
    When I go through all the apps, Calendar is the only one that shows the iCloud data (iMessage shows me as signed out, same with App Store, iTunes, FaceTime, Contacts, etc)
    Rebooted MBA multiple times throughout the process, to no avail or difference
    Performed a repair install of Yosemite through the recovery console
    After repair install, iCloud calendars still show up, even though my iCloud account under System Preferences shows me as signed out
    After repair install, signed back into iCloud to see if I could re-sync calendarsiCloud shows me as signed in and Calendars as successfully setup
    Upon launching Calendars, i get the spinning wheel in the top left of my calendar app and new calendar items created on the MBA do not sync with iCloud (website or other connected devices)
    Created new calendar item on other devices as well as iCloud website, calendar item never shows up on MBA
    So, aside from a complete format of the hard drive, can anyone think of any options I haven't tried?  Or some way to completely reset one app (such as Calendar)

    Needed to add some clarification here:
    iCloud shows me as signed in, but Calendars are NOT checked
    Internet Accounts shows Calendars as syncing

  • Apple TV sync finally working

    For what it's worth, I have finally figured out how to keep my ATV from crashing and rebooting during the sync process and also keep it in from disappearing from the device list in iTunes.
    Setup: I have a fully Apple homogenous setup: iMac with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) running iTune 9.0.1 w/ethernet to Airport Extreme 802.11n (firmware 7.4.2) wireless stream to two 40GB ATVs (family room, living room). I use the ATV to stream everything with no media on either ATV.
    I have previously tried everything recommended on these forums: reboots, reinstalls, trashed prefs, completely resetup wireless network, factory resets of ATVs, firmware upgrades/downgrades on Airport Extreme
    My fix was simple;
    1. Choose radio button to custom sync each ATV on the respective ATV device in iTunes. (For the record, I don't know if this has ANY bearing on the fix but it is the way mine is setup.)
    2. Choose "Prevent Apple TV from syncing automatically" in the Apple TV pref pane within iTunes preferences.
    After I checked this weeks ago, I have not lost either Apple TV from the device list and I can access all of my content from the ATV menus and no longer get the "There is no content available" message that i used to routinely get when I'd lose connections previously.
    The ONLY pain that this setup has cost me is I need to manually kick off the sync process occasionally from within iTunes to ensure my library file on the ATVs accurately reflect my iTunes library file. Not bad compared to the constant frustration of never being able to use my ATV because it couldn't establish a connection or show the content from within iTunes.
    This may help and it may seem obvious but it is the ONLY thing that has worked for me.
    Message was edited by: Jamvan - Added clarification to existing setup.

    My set up is an Airport Extreme, iMac (Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iTunes 9.02), and Apple TV with the 3.0 update. No luck with Syncing it just hangs until the ATV crashes.
    I'm using the work around mentioned at the top but it is really irritating given I'm using all Apple technology. By the way the Firewall is off on my iMac however I do have a large iTunes library 300Gigs. I just wonder if it's too big for the ATV to sync successfully.

  • Can 2 iPhones be synced to the same computer?

    I have had an iPhone 3G for the past 2 years, and just bought an iPhone4.
    Can I give the 3G to my wife and sync both iPhones to the same iTunes library on ONE computer? Or need she sync to her own iTunes library on her laptop?
    We have the same Contacts and Calendar etc on our laptops (through MobileMe), and I would love it if both iPhones behaves identical, i.e. that they had the same content (including the Apps that I downloaded/bought). Is this possible?
    Thanks for any pointers/help/suggestions. Cheers, Veit

    Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the follow-up question: I assume that the iTunes account needs to be on ONE and the SAME computer, or can the same iTunes account reside on TWO separate laptops?
    (Just curious, is there a paper that introduces the grand concepts of iTunes without going too much into detail? E.g. that many devices can be synced to one iTunes account; that one iPhone can ONLY be synced to ONE account; etc. etc.)

    Foolishly I upgarded to Office 2010 not realising that my Palm won't sync with Outlook 2010. I reverted back to Office 2007 but now my Treo won't sync with the calendar. All else appears okay. I get the following message:

To use this device with current Outlook profile, open the Hotsync custom dialogue and change the conduit settings to use this Outlook profile. See the Oultlook conduit help for details.
    The conduit settings only allow me to change which over-writes which - computer or Treo. When I chnage to get the computer to over-write (as this is where my up-to-date info is, the same message appears. I going to get an iPhone soon if I can't get help. This is crazy.
    Someone out there help...please.
    Post relates to: Treo 680 (Unlocked GSM)

    If I understand correctly, then the old Outlook 2003 is no longer available to you. If that's the case, then all of your information should have been taken from your local outlook 2003 and put into the new outlook 2007 exchange. The only way you can sync with exchange is by using EAS. You will need the server address, domain name, and the username/password you use to log into outlook. I expect you may not have some of this information, which is where your IT department will be able to fill in the blanks. You won't need to use the Treo for email, but now that outlook 2003 is gone, that isn't an option for your contacts/calendar/notes anymore. When setting up the EAS on your device, it will ask what you want to sync, and you can select/deselect the options you prefer.
    Hope this clarifies things a little bit.
