Clarifications in Oracle

Please, i want help in these following areas:
1.The difference between Database Administrator and an Oracle Developer
2. The topics in Oracle 11g that where not in Oracle 10g which forms the upgrade on 10g
3. The difference between Oracle home on Windows and Oraclehome in Linux
4. I want an assistance in knowing all the Oracle Applications and how these applications differs from an Enterprise Resource Package like SAP

How many years do you have to spend?
No, seriously, you should become familiar with the Documentation.
Here's a Search and Index (scroll down for Applications section).
For the DBA vs Developer, there's plenty of forums discussions if you just google, but this page on OU has a list of role based "paths" for learning.
Also, as kindly pointed out above, this does not seem to me an Installation issue... Please pick a suitable forum before posting (which might be much easier to do if you break down your posts to not cover everything at once).

  • Clarification on - Oracle Version Update Patch and License Key

    Hello,
I am currently using Oracle 9.2.0.4.0 version of oracle database. I want to update it to a higer version or we can say I would like to apply a new higer patch to this version.
    My questions are,
    1. Is there any new higer patch available for Oracle 9.2.0.4.0?
    2. If answer to above question is YES then, is the new patch requires the license key to implement?
I have the license copy of Oracle 9.2.0.4.0.
Do I require the license key to implement the new patch?
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu

Yes the latest patch available on Oracle9i is 9.2.0.7.0 (on windows 32 bit). But in general I think its 9.2.0.6.0. You can check at metalink against the platform you are using.
No I don't think you need a license to apply the patch if you already have one.

  • Oracle 9i rac interconnect

    Hai,
I need clarification in oracle 9i rac internetconnect. Recently we have done installation of oracle 9i rac (9.2.0.4) on aix 5.3 with hacmp cluster for 2 nodes. We are not able to mount the second instance of the database after starting the first instance.
The problem was solved after adding cluster_interconnect parameter in the init.ora file. In all other servers, it is not given and oracle is selecting the interconnect automatically. For this new server alone this problem. I want to know from whether oracle is taking this interconnect if we dont mention the cluster_interconnect paramter. Even i have verified /etc/hosts file and entries are available in it. Requeting your help in this regard.

Where the IP information is stored and managed from depends on your implementation such as are you using a third party clusterware. If you are using Oracle clusterware its stored in the OCR.
You can check this using the following query...
    SELECT * FROM GV$CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS;
The source column will tell you where the interconnect information was obtained from.
BTW, if you are using the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS parameter you may loose some of the HA features here is something from the 10gR2 documentation..
" Failover and Failback and CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS
Some operating systems support run-time failover and failback. However, if you use the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS initialization parameter, then failover and failback are disabled."
Question, have you tried other options such as NIC pairing and bonding to have dual interconnects instead of using the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS parameter.
Please check Metalink Note # 298891.1 talks about configuring NIC bonding on Linux there are similar options for other operating systems.

  • Loading using oracle extenal tables

    Hi All,
I need some clarification regarding oracle external tables .
    1) What is the syntax of creating an external table if the input file is of UTF-16 big-endian ??
    2) I have seen some sample for external table ..where we will mention location of the input file as LOCATION ('foo.dat')) and also we will mention directory to look into it as DEFAULT DIRECTORY def_dir1
is it mandatory that these directory should be present in DB server ?? . I mean server in which oracle is installed .
    Oracle version is 10gR2.
    Thanks in Advance .

is it mandatory that these directory should be present in DB server ?? . I mean server in which oracle is installed .Yes, the directory (& files) must be "local" to Oracle.

  • Oracle Backup using AIX cmds

    Hi all,
I need a clarification regarding Oracle DB hope you guys can throw some light on my question.
One of my client wants me to take backup of the oracle data file path (oradata folder) using AIX-OS Commands, when the database is running but
database is actually scheduled in RMAN backup regularly.
He stills insists to take a backup of the oradata folder of the database without even shutting down. I said tat backup would be incomplete, invalid and
it cannot be used to restore but client is saying he had restored it previously with tat kind of backup so he needs a backup.
Can you please clarify me, If i take a backup of the oradata folder using AIX commands such as tar or gunzip when database is running and db is in archive log mode.
Will I able to restore it or does the backup will be valid.
    Thanks in advance..

    Thanks,
NonudayThe answer is NO, NO, one thousand times NO!Er, as Hemant said, all you have to do is alter the db into backup mode. This is not deprecated, it's there for split mirror type backups (along with suspend, for some hardware). I suspect that's what the boss wants, this just sounds like a communication issue between OP and boss.
    >
Unless the backup software you are using is "Oracle aware" (in which case under the covers it is actually a wrapper for RMAN or a user managed hot backup) you have trash, for the reasons you have already explained to your client.
I think you need to demonstrate to your client on a test machine ... with his bosses bosses boss present.Problem is, it doesn't always fail. Tivoli is aware of Oracle if done right.

    What i mean is:
-Can i use it inside my company to store customers, supplies etc?
-Can i develop an application on it and sell it to another one?
    Thank,

    Hi Mike,
for me the license agreement wasn't totally clear in some areas and after a misunderstanding with Oracle Sales in Germany I decided to talk to Oracle Product Management, here is the answer: http://daust.blogspot.de/2012/08/clarification-on-oracle-xe-licensing.html
It is definitely free for all commercial usages.

  • Reg PSP vs Oracle 6i

We would like to get some clarifications regaring Oracle products, please help us and suggest which one is the best one,
for one of our project we are recommending a complete oracle solution, It is web based application with 5000 transactions per day and 50 concurrent users, it has 1000+ reports and 750+ screens , we are planning to use Oracle 6i forms and reports with Oracle 9iAS and Oralce 8i on linux and one more thing we are thinking is using PL/SQL Server PAges, could you suggest us what are all the pros and cons by using the above features of oracle and which is the best one interms of cost effective solution. and what are all the requirements interms of hardware and software if we choose one of them, please do this hel pand we are struggling to take decision on this issue.
Or shall we use combination of Oracle 6i and PSP with ORacle 8i on linux
    or
Oracle 6i and Oracle 9iAS and ORacle 8i on linux.
What are all we require interms of S/w and H/W if we go for ORacle 6i forms and Reports with or without PSP
It is very urgent one so please reply asap.

Kedar, you can use forms6i with Oracle database 10g without upgrade.
compatibility issue comes not with the database becuase database is global and accessible to applications not developed in forms but with the application server.
you cannot host forms6i with Oracle application server 9i rel2 onwards. it has to be in forms9i and above.
But this is valid only if you are working with web based application.
    client server should go well.

  • Query on Change Data Capture

    Hi,
A small clarification on oracle CDC(change data capture),if the CDC is down for 6 hours due to some issues how do I capture all the source transactions into CDC views during this window?
Just doing a purge and restarting the CDC Subscriber would solve the above scenario?
    Thanks

Oracle CDC is all about capturing changes in DB tables and the changes are stored in special Oracle tables. There are two modes of CDC operation: asynchronous (based on Java) or synchronous (based on DB triggers, more performance overhead).

  • 10.1.3 and UIX --- anyone got it to run?

I am toying around with 10.1.3.
I'm testing if we could get our UIX applications to run with 10.1.3.
The UIX design time extension is still missing, but we're not planning any huge changes to these applications right now, so for the time being, we would be happy to get the applications to run.
The older UIX stuff seems to work, but one application (9.0.5.2 style, uses bindings) isn't working.
It seems that the bindings are not doing what they're supposed to do.
During rendering I get a huge amount of EL exceptions.
So I was wondering if anyone managed to get a 9.0.5.2-style UIX application to run.
And it would be great to get some clarification from Oracle about the UIX design time extension that was mentioned in documents, and which was supposed to be available in the second half of 2006. This phrase seems to have vanished from documents during the last month or so. Is this still coming?
    Thanks,
    Sascha

    Hello Sascha,
As far as I know, if you still need to run with the original UIX technology,
    you should keep JDeveloper 10.1.2.1.
still available to download at the JDeveloper archive web site :
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/jdev/archives.html
You can check for the Oracle JDeveloper 10g (10.1.3):
    Desupported and Deprecated Features
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/10.1.3.0.3/desupport1013g.html
as well as the Roadmap of ADF UIX :
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/collateral/papers/9.0.5.0/adfuix_roadmap/adfuix_roadmap.html
    where it says :
It is recommended that customers planning new user interface projects should use the 10.1.3 production release if they have the opportunity to do so. With the Oracle JDeveloper 10g (10.1.3) production release JavaServer Faces will be the recommended view technology for building web applications. Alternatively, customers not able to use the production release of Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3 can use the Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.2 production release with ADF UIX and Apache Struts. These technologies are well supported in Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.2, and using them will allow applications to be more easily migrated to Oracle ADF 10.1.3 and JSF.
Additionally, ADF UIX has been desupported in the 10.1.3 release.
    Hope this will help you.

  • Can't find the Audit Vault 10.3 software for the agent on Windows 32 bit.

the docs for 10.3 suggest windows 32 bit is supported but I can only find on edelivery the 64 bit agent kit.
Does anyone know where the 32 bit kit is please?
    Thanks

I do see that in Section 1.1 of the 10.3 Collection Agent Install Guide.  However Section 2.3 of that same guide refers you to the latest list of certifications (again, document 848402.1 ).  Not sure why the inconsistency, but you might want to file a SR to get further clarification from Oracle.

  • RAC - pulling the public network connector

    Hallo,
would be really good to get an answer for this case:
What is the expected behaviour of the instance if i pull out the network connector of the public network.
In our case the instance of that node is reacting with an automatic shutdown abort.
Is that ok ? We want to have a running AS on top of the RAC so if there are network problems the whole AS would crash if the instance disappears in the back.
    Thx for clarification
    Jochen

The Oracle Clusterware requires that each node be connected to a private network by way of a private interconnect.
The private interconnect that Oracle Clusterware requires is a separate network that you configure between the cluster nodes. This interconnect, which is required by RAC, can be the same network that the clusterware uses, but the interconnect should not be accessible by nodes that are not part of the cluster.
So unless you do not use your public network as part of the private network (which is a contradiction) and both networks use the same protocols you will not have Oracle Clusterware use the "public/private" network link. It was just not registered with Oracle Clusterware during installation.
Correct me if I am wrong ...

  • XE limits

    Dear Anybody!
I try to found out cause of strange operation. One possible cause is the XE limits.
" 3.3 Oracle Database XE Server User Data Limitations The maximum amount of user data in an Oracle Database XE Server database cannot exceed 4 gigabytes. If the user data grows beyond this limit, then an ORA-12592 error will appear. "
"Oracle Database XE can be installed on any size host machine with any number of CPUs (one database per machine), but XE will store up to 11GB of user data, use up to 1GB of memory, and use one CPU on the host machine."
So anybody knows what is the maining of 4GByte|11GByte user data limit for express edition?
This is for disk allocted size?
    Row effective size?
    Row effective size ever used?
    Row effective size currently used?
The limit is for one server?
The limit is for all server on a same opsys?
So anybody knows what is the maining of 1 CPU limit for express edition?
The limit is for one server?
The limit is for all server on a same opsys?
What if the hardware has dozen core and one server run on CPUA_core3 other run on CPUB_core7?
    Thanks fo any info...

    Some grammar expirience:
"1. Express Edition is limited to a single instance on any server."
What is the word "server" in this sentece? They not defined in license agreement.
One XE used just one times as installation this mean just for one server (hardware and opsys). Therefore the words "on any server" has no meaning if we taliking about the hardware server. This sentence has only meaning if tell any database server binded to one instance and not possible to split it between instances.
"1. Express Edition is limited to a single instance on any server."
The 2nd question is what is "limited" there ? This mean limited by oracle product or need to limit manually by user?
This can be force not to use buld-in feautre of XE. This kind of request not defined in license.
"4. Express Edition may use up to 1 GB RAM of available memory."
The 3rd question is what is the meainig "may only be" there? This mean may be limited by oracle product or need to limit manually by user?
This can be before the XE started all memory above 1GB must be removed.
Nearly this was my original question and this is why I start this topic.
Otherwords looks like need license clarification from oracle.
"Are you speaking from experience ?"
To know this you does not need to start more instance. If you check the installer GUI you can see the definitions (dir, sid, database, port) not desinged to use more instance at same machine. If you not designed it well like ours in case of other 3 server vendor then theoreticly you have no chance to start more instance...

  • Clarification on Prerequisite components for Oracle IDM 11gR2PS2

I am new to Oracle Fusion Middleware. However, I am familiar with IDM concepts of a different vendor.
I started with installation documentation and would like to have clarification on IDM components (Includes OAM, OAAM, OIM, OSTS, OES, OIN, OUD, OIF, ESSO, OIC, OPAM). While referring "Oracle Identity and Access Management 11g Release 2 (11.1.2.x) Certification Matrix", first section describes system requirements which tells us about supported  "Processor type, OS Version, OS 32/64 Bit, Database" etc for 11gR2PS2 (11.1.2.2.0). "ID&Access" tab tells about LDAP supported for specific component(s).
    Notes -
"Some Oracle Identity and Access Management components require an Oracle Database. Ensure that you have an Oracle Database installed on your system before installing Oracle Identity and Access Management. The database must be up and running to install the relevant Oracle Identity and Access Management component. The database does not have to be on the same system where you are installing the Oracle Identity and Access Management component."
I am aware of the fact that configuration will be difficult in these type of architecture I mention below and it is not recommended. Moreover, I will not be able to use RCU. Let's ignore the configuration part for a while.
As mentioned above, when I went through first section it says, database supported for Identity Management 11gR2PS2 (11.1.2.2.0) is "Oracle Database". Whereas in the section which specifies about the supported LDAP type, specification are as below -
(for ease of understanding I have just take two components from the IDM suite).
    OAM - Oracle Internet Directory
            - Oracle Virtual Directory
            - Microsoft Active Directory 2008,
            - Novell eDirectory 8.8,
            - IBM Tivoly Directory Server 6.3
            - And as per list...
    Whereas, OIM Server supports,
    OIM - Oracle Internet Directory,
           - Oracle unified Directory,
           - Microsoft Active Directory 2008
However, I do not find Novell eDirectory or IBM Tivoli Directory server in the LDAP supported list for OIM Server.
    My Question is,
In the list of supported database, it has been listed as "Oracle Database" everywhere. Whereas support  for LDAP type we have option(s) from different vendors. Does this mean that if I plan to use LDAP something other than Oracle Internet Directory / Oracle unified Directory / Oracle Virtual Directory, my database should be 'Oracle Database' only ?
Scenario 1 - I want to use OAM server and since OAM supports LDAP from Microsoft, IBM, Novell.
Can I go for IBM Tivoli Directory Server as LDAP type and IBM DB2 as database type ?
                                                    or
IBM DB2 as database type and Oracle Internet Directory / Oracle Unified Directory ?
                                                    or
(If deploying on Windows system) Microsoft SQL server as database type and Microsoft Active Directory 2008 as LDAP type ?
Or is it Mandate that my database should be "Oracle Database" irrespective of LDAP (IBM TDS / Microsoft Active Directory / Novell eDirectory) I select.
Scenario 2 - I want to use OIM server and apart from Oracle Internet Direcotry / Oracle Unified Directory it only supports Microsoft Active Directory 2008 as per list.
Does this mean that if I use 'OIM Server' component of Oracle IDM 11gR2PS2 (11.1.2.2.0),
My database will be 'Oracle Database' and as a option for LDAP I have Microsoft Active Direcotry 2008 ? Yes, We have Oracle Unified Directory if we don't opt for Microsoft Active Directory.
                                                                        or
If I plan to use Microsoft Active Directory 2008 as my LDAP can I use Microsoft SQL server as database ? Or Should I use "Oracle Database" only ?
And, the OIM components doesn't support IBM's DB2 or IBM's Directory server / Novell eDirectory. ?

Any OIM experts, can you guys help!!

Edited by: wild fire on May 18, 2012 4:15 PM

    Dinesh,
remind that when you use a function in the where clause it normally will get started for each record in the table.
    So your answer is two-fold:
    1. make the function only start when needed by adding a function based index on the table (this will make inserts and updates slower)
    2. make the function faster by adding the DETERMINISTIC clause if possible. this will make Oracle "cache" the result of the function.
