Clarisworks to Pages 09

I've been told that there are third party apps that will convert Clariswork and Appleworks docs to Pages 09.
Any suggestions?
If so, what is the procedure to convert.

AppleWorks 6 will open AppleWorks 5 & ClarisWorks documents which can then be saved as AppleWorks 6 documents that the iWork apps can open. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
But, & it's a big one, AppleWorks 6.2.9 cannot open most ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. No one has been able to figure out why some do open but most don't. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open this files which is why I recommend anyone having the remotest possibility of needing to open these files keep a copy of another version of AppleWorks. If you're using an Intel Mac you'll want AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.7 was very, very buggy but is still a better option than 6.2.9 in this instance. If you have access to a PPC Mac, you can run any version of AppleWorks 6, including the Classic component of the last version, 6.2.8. There is also the option of using AppleWorks 6 for Windows in an emulator or on an actual PC.

  • Pages 5 in Mavericks no longer opens Text files?- need to open old Clarisworks files

My 90 year old uncle clung to ClarisWorks, Appleworks far too long
He still has Claris Works documents he needs to open. Some so old that even AppleWorks version  6x, the final version of AppleWorks could not open!)
In Mountain Lion, he could open the older Clarisworks- Appleworks documents in TextEdit  , save as  .TXT file and then open that file in Pages
Tonight, after installing OS 10.9  ( Mavericks)he finds this work around unrelable : Sometimes the new Pages cannot open the .TXT message
How do  I help him convert his old documents?
( he saved  names and addresses in to Claris Works documents instead of entering into his Contacts/Address Book so now he is panicky to retrieve the addresses as he starts working on his holiday greeting and gift mailings)

Will the old Pages run under Maverick?
IF so that will be something to try
Old Pages did not open up the old Clarisworks docs but Pages 09 DID respond when we changed the extension of the CW documents to "TXT".
So , Uncle can try using Pages 09
    We also can try Libre
I can install Text Wrangler- there was some advice that it will open the old CW files.
My concern is that Uncle IS 90years of age. He is remarkable using a Mac but he needs, wants everything to be straightforward and resists, cannot handle any process requiring too many steps
The need to use an intermediary translation system (CW->TXT->Pages) is stressful for him.
Such a shame that Apple did not program a translator to open the files made by its previous proprietary software (ClarisWorks and Appleworks)
    Thanks all

  • Pages? Can I open really old Claris Works documents with it? I don't want to spend $20 to find out.

Pages? Can I open really old Claris Works documents with it? I don't want to spend $20 to find out. I saved a bunch of stuff back in 1996, and now i need to open it.

Pages opens strictly word processing AppleWorks v6 files.
The problem with ClarisWorks files were they could contain all sorts of objects from databases to spreadsheets, drawings and paint. the iWork suite is not that versatile.
But you really have little choice as ClarisWorks and AppleWorks are both history. If you are going to switch, the sooner the better.
Just keep in mind what Apple did to ClarisWorks/AppleWorks along with many other of their appliactions and technologies theywill ultimately do to Pages.

  • How can I repair "Page Set-up" in OS 10.4.11 (it stopped working)

On my old Powermac G4 my Page Sset-up cannot be opened anymore.
I have some Appleworks 6.2.9 spread sheets with multiple pages, which I need to print on an Epson 580 Printer,
the Print command in the File pulldown asks to "use the Page Set-up first", but  if I pull it down and click on it, it says
the same thing and does not show any dialog.
Is "Page Set-up"  part of Appleworks, or part of the Epson Printer Software, or is it part of the OS?
I got all the original disks for all that software, but reinstalling the whole works would take days
(...and may cause something else to disappear that I might not have on disk)
    Your help is appreciated.

Hello Klaus, thanks for the Help.  I reinstalled my Epson RX 580 Printer Software, then updated the drivers from the Epson Website.
Page Set-up was still not working.
So  I reinstalled Appleworks 6, then updated it to 6.2.9.  ( I got all the disks and saved all the Uppdate .dmg's)
I have 4 built-in hard drives, the largest one split into 3 separate volumes one of which is Techtool's E-drive), 3 of them have more or less the same data on it for back-up, all but one have their own boot start.
I had the same problem with all the drives. Each day I update Appleworks spreadsheets which have 4 pages, then save with new date.  I seldom need to print them, and never had any trouble doing so, until this time.
I went back a few years and picked one of the dated spreadsheets, opened it, then tried Page-Set-up and it worked.  It did that several times until I had narrowed down to the first dated SS in which Page set-up did not work:  It was dated Oct 1, 2009.  All later sheets had the same problem no Page Set-up possible, all earlier sheets were not so affected.
I made a copy of the last working SS, saved it as a template, erased all the data, then tried Page Set-up and it worked,  I copied the data from a later sheet into it, and saved to desk under new name.  I tried Print using PDF Print, then noticed that the old sheet I had used as template had only 3 Pages.
I had to add new cells to get my 4 Page system back.  But here was a new problem, I could print, but it would only print the old cell range from the 3 Page spreads.  There was no way to print sheet 4.  Even the extra cells in sheet 3 would not print.  Now that must be caused by Appleworks!  Or rather the Appleworks updates which had been all over the place in their last glory days.  (I had  tried to back-peddle trying with Appleworks 6 and Appleworks 5, even Clarisworks, well it did not work but Appleworks 6 files now add the extension  .cwk to all files - even though Preferences are set to "No Extensions" and I click on "No Extensions" while saving files.  The only way to get rid of these extension is to save the file, then highlight the name of the file
in its folder, and change delete the extension from the file name.  If this file is then opened up and saved a under a new nme the extension is gone from the new file as well.)
I just about gave up here.  I had checked all the disks with Disk Utility to verify Permissions, and check the Volumes.  Nothing was found.   I brought in the Techtool  and checked all the drives , and volumes:  nothing found.  I noticed here that my most actively used drive needed defrag, and so I used Techtool to defrag.  I tried the next day and discovered that the new 4 page spread sheet template would now print all pages!
So now I know what to do If I need to print from an old spresdsheet that has no Page Seutp.  I simply copy its contents to my new 4 sheet template.   All my new sheets are now done using the new template.

  • Pages 5.0 and Appleworks

One of my "older" friends wanted to update his iMac to Mavericks. He was still using Appleworks (with Snow Leopard) and had a bunch of Appleworks documents that he wanted to keep. I explained to him that Appleworks won't work in Mavericks and I recommended he download Pages. I have Pages '09 and it opens Applework documents and converts them to .pages format.
He downloaded the latest version of Pages. He tells me that he can't open Appleworks documents. I just took it for granted that that Apple would update a word processing app that would work with another Apple product... my mistake.
Why would "they" create a version that won't even open an Appleworks word processing file and convert it to Pages format?
Does the "new" Pages open older Pages documents?
What a crock of s___t! It's very disappointing.

VikingOSX's suggestions are valid, but I suggest looking a little further.
LibreOffice 4.2 [free] is developing very nicely and works with open file standards and has a respect for older formats.
It is developed by users for users and the developers certainly keep them foremost in their considerations. Being non-commercial they do not have the same management pressures for "new", "improved" features and product churn. They are constantly working on converting more legacy file formats such as AppleWorks, ClarisWorks, WordPerfect etc. It will even import pdf files.
It comes in Windows, Mac and Linux versions and does not have heavy hardware or OS requirements. The Mac version still works with Snow Leopard and there are prior versions available for older systems.
It's language support is leagues ahead of Apples, and contains Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Drawing, Maths, Presentation & Database. It supports both rtf and odf files ensuring they can be opened in the future.
It supports right to left langauges such as Arabic and Hebrew, correctly, including inserted left to right languages. Also Hindi, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, with dictionaries for most languages.
It has clip-art, a Template Centre and an Extension Centre to give it added functionality.
Whilst it lacks some of the polish of Pages in some areas, it far exceeds Pages in ultimate usability and durability.
Most of all it has a future, undivorced from its past files.

  • How do I create a library of quotations that I can use in any Pages document

I live in France and write letters to different people. Unlike a simple "Sincerely" or "Best Regards" sign-off in US letters, French etiquette uses a number of  "Formules de Politesses" to sign-off a letter.
According to one's position in regards to the person written to the formula can appreciative, demanding, unsatisfied, "threatening", etc.
In order to avoid retyping such formulas I'd like to save them in a Library and punch them into a letter as needed.
This was an option in ClarisWorks and perhaps AppleWorks but I can't figure out how to do it in Pages.
    Any suggestions?

Create a series of shortcut expressions such as <a>, <d>, <u>, <t> etc and then make auto-substitution in:
    Menu > Pages > Preferences > Auto-Correction > Symbol and text substitution

  • How to make lines for "fill in the blanks?" (iWork Pages 09)

This should be easy since it's something many people do: design a form for others to fill out with a pen or pencil.  However, I can't find any information regarding how to make a line after text, like this:
    Name _________________ Address _________________________________ Phone __________
    ...without using the underline character.
Back on the Clarisworks days there was some way to make nice neat lines after text using tabs.  However, It's been so long that I can't recall how it worked.  I've Googled this issue using every logical term I can think of but found nothing useful.  The Pages 09 help file and the user guide  seem to be mute on this subject. The Word 2008 help file is similarly silent.  However, I'm sure that the greater Pages community knows the answer to this one.
    Thanks,
    Bill

What you want is called a tab leader. In Pages, to create the underline:
To create a new tab stop using the Text inspector, click in the document where you want to create a new tab stop, click Inspector in the toolbar, and then click Tabs. Click the Add button in the bottom-left corner of the Tabs pane. The new tab stop appears in the Tab Stops column.
Then  use the Leader drop down menu to choose a solid line:

  • Thumbnail issues in Pages 5.1

Hi all, since upgrading to pages 5.1 I am having some issues that were quite basic in the previous version.  I am unable to select multiple thumbnails in order to copy/paste.  I am also unable to do a right click on thumbnails (no menus).  Help.

Hopefully you can help with the problem I am having with Page 09.  I downloaded the Pages 5 (have not upgraded to 5.1) on all my computers- laptop, iMac and mac mini.  On my Laptop and Mac Mini Pages will not let save or make any changes- I have had it on both of the computers years (macmini) 9 months laptop working with no problems.  Says I am in a trial version.  Do you think removing Pages 5 will fix it or am I just screwed?  Pages 5 will not open older versions of Pages or the previous Appleworks/ Clariswork documents I have (yes, I have been using a mac for that long and deeply miss Clariswork that could open anything at the time).
Thanks for any insight.  I would be a pain to have to move and do all the work from the iMac.

  • How can I transfer older Claris Works and AppleWorks files to new iMac.  I use Pages, and MacWord, Excel, etc. as well.

    March 20, 2013
I have a new iMac using Pages and Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. for mac.  I'd like to transfer older ClarisWorks and AppleWorks files to my new computer.  Can this be done?

Additionally, Numbers can read/open spreadsheets. However, anything done in the drawing/painting part cannot be read by any application - you would have to export those (on the old machine) as a .jpg or pdf. You could then open them, but no longer edit or change the content.

  • How do i open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

How do I open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first, which means you need a way to run it.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard Server under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and is preferable to using ordinary Snow Leopard which is quite tricky. I haven't tried this myself: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

  • I have nearly 6000 .cwk documents - some word and some spreadsheet.  How can I mass convert these to pages and numbers?

Have been using Mac from early on.  My present MacBook Pro has 3 previous computers and information installed on it.
The question is, I have been using Appleworks/Clarisworks for years for my business.  Would like to save that history before moving to Lion.  I know you can convert the files individually from .cwk file to pages, but I have nearly 6,000 files to convert.
Is there some way to convert them to pages and numbers  or .doc files in mass?

  • Opening up documents: Claris Works5.0.3 on old iMac with "pages" on MacBook

I have many many documents on my iMac that were composed with Claris Works. They reside on an external HD and when connecting to my MacBook I am unable to open any of the documents. I was told that "pages" could open them however I can not figure out the "trick."
Anyone that can help? Give advice?????????

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You don't say who told you Pages would open the files. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
If they are only word processing & spreadsheet documents you could try icWord & icExcel from Panergy Software. The last I checked they don't save as Pages or Numbers, so you would have to save in a compatible format & then open that in Pages or Numbers.
I think your best option is to get a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 (or 6.2.9 if you are sure you don't have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files). You can then open & re-save the files. For those that are not word processing or spreadsheets, you'll have a program that can allow you to open, edit, save, etc. any of the files. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4. You must make sure the installer is for version 6.2 or later. Before that, the installer required OS 8 or 9.

  • How can I claris works filesto pages?

how can I claris works filesto pages?

Step 1 would be getting them into AppleWorks 6.
Step 2 would be saving them from within AppleWorks 6.
At that point, provided that these are Apple Works Word Processor documents, you will be able to open them with Pages.
Steps 1 and 2 require a working copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4, 6.2.7 (not recommended) or 6.2.9, and a machine that is able to run it.
Be aware that AW 6.2.9 is unable to open some ClarisWorks files.
There are numerous threads dealing with tis issue. Check some of the others that are listed in the More Like This section to the right.

  • In 2007, I stored some information on a disk, as it was too sensitive to remain on my computer. Now the disk shows it was a .cwk file and I cannot open it. I've tried several things, but I've gotten messages that it isn't a pages, numbers or presentation

In 2007, I stored some sensitive information on a disk rather than leave it on my computer. Now, in the latest version of Pages, I cannot read the disk, although accessing the information could save me days of work duplicating it. Is there a way of reading/converting the disk?

By 'cannot read the disk' I assume you mean that you can access the file but cannot open it (if you couldn't read the disk you wouldn't be able to see the file in the first place).
As you have found, the latest Pages does not open Appleworks documents. If you had the earlier version of Pages and upgraded, the older version is still in the iwork '09 folder in your Applications folder and that version pf Pages will open AW Word Processing documents (which presumably that is).
Failing that, Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
