Classic 160GB iPod freezing whenever I connect it to my Laptop

Everytime I connect my iPod to my mac to sync freezes. Happens nearly everytime. I formatted it, did no good. iPod always will sync after I reset it, but this is frustrating. I have the classic 160GB. I think this started happening when I upgraded to Lion. =/

Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software as shown on the iTunes summary page?
Before you sync your iPod, please recharge the battery for at least 2 hours.
Please try again, after you do a Hard Reset, connect it to a High Power USB2.0 port on the Mac body and not to any USB hub or Keyboard USB Port.
PS: the iPod Hardisk is a High Drain device, which needs a lot of power for the write operation, sometime it works fine, but it it doesn't have enough power to write, it will hang, as the power bus maybe be shared by other USB device, and when it hangs, it causes a USB resource deadlock, so everything freezes.
Of course if your Hardisk is dying, it also causes the freeze. Do the Disk Diagnostic as posted by tt2

To check the health of your ipod hardisk.
Have a nice day!

  • My itunes freezes whenever I connect my ipod classic

Hello, I have a 7th gen 160 GB ipod classic, the latest version of itunes (10.6.3), and I've been having a lot of problems trying to put music on it lately.
Whenever I try to connect it to the computer, my itunes just freezes up and I can't do anything with it (this happened when I tried it on another computer as well). When I disconnect it, my device appears on itunes for a split second and a message pops up saying something like "The ipod cannot be synced, the required folder cannot be found".
The day before this happened, I had problems with itunes freezing and that message popping up, but I could still put songs on there in between the freezing spells. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, starting itunes in safe mode, resetting my ipod while it was connected, almost everything except for restoring it. I'm afraid that if when restore it and all the music on it is gone, itunes will continue to freeze and I won't be able to put the music back on.
Also, I have Windows Vista. Should I try to scan and repair it when the window pops up, and then restore it? Does anyone have an alternative option, or do I have to restore it to fix it? Will restoring it fix the freezing? Does anyone else have this problem? I'll be very grateful to anyone who can provide a solution. Thank you for your time.

If your not afraid of losing your songs and everything else on your ipod try this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLX81c5KZ_I
do everything he says but before plugging it in, put your ipod into disk mode by pressing and holding the select and menu buttons for 6-8 seconds, and when the screen switches immediatly press and hold the select and play buttons for the same amount(it should show a check mark/ok to disconnect.)
And for step two on the video, scan it, he says not to but thats when mine worked is when i scanned it. one box should be checked in the scan(the one checked by default).  Then follow the instructions on the video.
Also to add, mine fixed and worked untill i plugged it in and tryed adding more songs.  I also did something undisclosed out of anger.  So if mine doesn't work I wouldn't be surprised.  Yours should.

  • IPod freezes iTunes when connected to computer

Whenever I connect my iPod to my Dell laptop iTunes freezes. When this happens, iTunes does not crash, it only freezes. During this time, iTunes will finish the song that it is playing (if doing so), but after the song finishes no further media will play. Also, the iPod does not show up on the sidebar of iTunes at this time (iTunes appears exactly as it was before connecting the iPod).
I am unable to eject the iPod safely at this point as the computer tells me that the system is using the iPod. If I remove the iPod from the computer, the error message: "Unable to sync iPod" comes up in iTunes. At the same time the iPod shows up on the sidebar of the iTunes, but it disappears as soon as I click "Ok" on the error message. At this point, iTunes returns to normal and is no longer frozen, even without restarting.
I have tried using a different computer and the same thing happens. I have also tried a different cable and the same exact thing happens.
Most recently, I have tried putting the iPod into disk mode, but still the same thing happens when I connect it to the computer.
If I go into My Computer (the same thing occurs in or out of disk mode) and click on the iPod, it will take me to the iPod folder, but My Computer will begin to Not Respond and then the only way to close it is to force close the window (ctrl, alt, del). If I right click the iPod, the drop down menu to access properties or to format the iPod comes up, but once again My Computer begins to not respond and I must force close it.
My iPod is an iPod Classic, 120 GB.
My computer is a Dell Laptop, Studio 1558
I have also tried on a Dell Desktop

OK, lets check out the iPod's hard drive...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • IPod Classic 160Gb 6th Generation Won't Sync With Windows 7 Laptop

Yesterday I purchased an iPod Classic 160Gb to replace my old iPod Classic that is on it's last legs (10 years old)
My laptop recognises the iPod as a drive but iTunes does not recognise it at all. When I connect the iPod to iTunes the iPod shows it is syncing but this only lasts about 10 seconds. Needless to say there is no music etc. on the iPod when I disconnect it.
I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions but none of them have worked. When I try and connect my old iPod I have the same problem.
I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes before connecting my new iPod; it seems to me that this is a software problem!
I have spent over 5 hours on this today and am getting fed up now
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm getting this exact problem too, although mine is not brand new it randomly wiped itself the other week and now nothing I'm doing will get the songs back onto it, this is so frustrating!

  • IPod Freezes on when connected

    Hi Guys-
Lately, my iPod has been freezing on the 'do not disconnect' stop sign screen whenever I connect it to my Mac and is not recognized. I just restart it and it always seems to work on the 2nd try. I'm running the latest version. Any ideas on why it keeps freezing? Thanks.
    -Jack

Thanks for the replies.........I can't seem to find a solution to this....its annoying to say the least. Its just happened again this morning, though it's successfully sync'd on the last few occasions....it seems to be quite random.
One thing I've noticed is that it synced OK when iTunes wasn't open when I plugged it in. It appeared on the desktop, then I opened iTunes. This morning though it froze when iTunes was already open, so there may be an issue with iTunes (I updated this weekend to see if it was any different with the new version). I guess this will happen if you've got the ipod set to open iTunes automatically when connected too.
So, no solutions as yet.......I'm gonna get onto Apple to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all on this one.
PS: why no firewire capabilities on the new ipods?

I having a similar problem. Sometimes while my ipod is syncing or when I am deleting something, it freezes. I cannot close it at all. It doesn't effect the rest of the computer. I cannot get rid of it unless I restart the computer and I can't keep doing it, its becoming an annoyance. I've reinstalled 4 times and it doesn't seem to be working. PLEASE HELP!

  • I have had to reset my iPod Classic 160gb but each time I connect to my itunes it keeps saying it is in recovery and should be restored. When I restore it, it just tells me I need to restore it again. Can anyone help?

I have a Sonos system with an ipod dock and was experiencing problems when using my ipod. The people at Sonos suggested resetting my ipod, so I did. Now, unfortunatey, my ipod isn't working properly. When I connected it to my itunes it said that it was in recovery mode and should be restored. I restored it and a message said it would appear in my itunes. But it just keeps saying that it needs to be restored. I've tried removing my itunes software and reloading it again but nothing changed.

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer

  • Everything associated ipod freezes when it connects to my computer

Hi, when I connect my ipod classic to the computer I get an error message saying something is corrupted and that it's recommended to repair it. However it takes extremely long time so I ignore it.
When I connect it now everything associated with it freezes. Explorer.exe freezes when  i try to access it from my computer, Itunes freezes and other products as well.
I've tried resetting it to fabric settings and I've changed the hard drive (it was pretty fried)
I still can't do anything, it has no songs as well.
    I'm in vain please help

It does not work. I restored it and synched it again. At first it works fine, I can synch music and play it from the Ipod, but after I've synched about 1 gb of music everything freezes, and when I close the computer to be able to let it go (the only way, everything's frozen) the Ipod acts like there's no music, even though it shows as having some storage when viewing from My Computer (which is also freezes)
I turned the HD in for service (actually going back, they're giving me my money back since it didn't solve the problem) and I'm pretty certain they did their job.
