Classic and OS 10.3.9

Hi I have a G4 with OS 10.3.9 installed but I have some old games that require Classic that my son is begging me to play.
Is there a way to "add" classic without erasing or installing over os 10.3.9? And if so, HOW DO YOU DO IT??
I finally have itunes and everything just how I want it, I'd hate to screw it all up for some old games.
I also have an old Powermac 8300 that I'm not using...
is there a way to piggy-back that, and install classic on it?
That's probably OVER MY HEAD, but I was just thinking...

Hi, acsc -
Machine Model: Power Mac G3 (PCI graphics)
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.6)
There's a bit of a conflict in the info given there - "G3" vs. "G4".
Your model may be a G4 (PCI Graphics) model, and Apple System Profiler is confused (it sometimes can be) - the G4 (PCI) models are not much more than a G3 B&W with a different processor and case color.
G4 (PCI) models originally came with OS 8.6; later models in that series may have come with OS 9.0.4 (probably a model-specific version). In either case it can certainly use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD in order to install OS 9/Classic.
Since you want to be able to use the install as Classic, you would need to end up with OS 9.1 or later (OS 9.1 is the minimum version of OS 9 usable as Classic - OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility when used as Classic). You can use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD, and use download updaters as needed; but I would suggest getting a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD since using that would eliminate one large download.
Boot to the retail OS 9 Install CD and run the installer. Select to do a Clean Install - doing so will not remove anything, but will avoid a problem where the installer can mistake an OSX folder as being an OS 9 system folder of unknown version.
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
Accept the normal (default) install - no need to do a custom install. Once the installation is complete, boot to it to verify it's okay. Use Startup Disk control panel to select that.
If it boots okay, then the next time you boot to OSX it can be designated as Classic. You do that via the Classic control panel in OSX's System Preferences - your version of OSX may need to update some files in the OS 9 System Folder; it will take care of that when you select that OS 9 System Folder as Classic.
Note (1) - Once OS 9 has been installed, it can be used as OS 9 (meaning as the OS the machine is booted to), or as Classic (meaning as a program while the machine is booted to OSX). You can switch back and forth by using Startup Disk control panel/pane to choose the OS you wish to use after the next restart.
The Startup Disk control panel that comes with OS 9.1 is not capable of 'seeing' OSX as a valid boot OS, and so can not be used to switch the machine's boot OS to OSX for the next boot. The solution for that is to update the OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.x; or, download and install an updated Startup Disk control panel -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
You can also use a keyboard command to direct the machine to boot to OSX at startup - as soon as the machine is booted or restarted, about the time the startup chime sounds press the X key and keep it held down until the machine has started to boot to OSX.
Note (2) - when you boot the machine to the OS 9 Install CD, it can happen that the hard drive is not visible on the desktop. If this occurs it indicates that the drive was last initialized and formatted using OSX's Disk Utility, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected.
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
That article mentions one possibility of recovering from that situation - using Drive Setup while booted to the OS 9 Install CD to Update Driver via that item in the Functions menu. Unfortunately that seldom works, and the only choice then would be to re-initialize the drive, being sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers - this erases the drive, so be sure your data is backed up before proceeding to do it.

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.

  • Question regarding Classic and Advance table

    Hi,
I have classic and advance table. I am populating with VO that brings 100 record. When i render page i see last record being displayed. How can i show my first record by defult on both tables?

By default the first record will be displayed, if you are seeing the last one instead, you probably did a vo.last() in the code.

  • HT1657 I rented a movie to add onto my ipod classic and when I moved it to my ipod it is no longer there and it is no longer in my purchased section on my itunes.

I recently rented a movie to add on my ipod classic and it wasn't transferring when I would sync so I manually move it to my ipod but when I go on my ipod it is not there and it is no longer in my purchases on itunes.  help!

Is this on your computer or on iPad/iPhone ? If you are on an iPad or iPhone then it should have downloaded into the Videos app - iTunes on those devices is just the iTunes store, and if you just see the Ts & Cs link on the Downloads tab then that means that there are no outstanding downloads waiting.

  • IPod Classic and Audiobooks (Audible, not MP3)

Just curious...has anyone else noticed (and been annoyed by) the fact that Audible audiobooks are no longer accessible anywhere except the "Audiobook" menu?
This bothers for one rather large reason...I ahve a rather large number of Audible audiobooks, and rather than scroll through Every. Single. One, I enjoyed scanning the authors and titles via the "Genre" menu. This capability, sadly, seems to have vanished from the Classic, and I assume the new Nanos as well.
Other than making specific playlists for certain authors, anyone found a way to force the new interface to play nice with these and not separate them from the rest of your music?

I agree there's a problem and I sure hope that Apple fixes it in the next firmware update for the Classic iPod.
I have used every version of iPod (not nanos or whatever just iPods) and this one has definitely broken audiobook organization. On every previous model I simply went to "artists" and selected the name of the author and then had a nice list of the books (using the "album" attribute for book title) and then I could select the part of the book that I wanted to dive into which I could title using the song title attribute. I never ever found the straight audiobook listing particularly useful.
Now I've got to use the amusing "search" mechanism or spend a bunch of time screwing around with playlists to try and put some order in the chaos that some misguided engineers have introduced.
I can not for the life of me understand how the current audiobook category behavior ever got signed off on by QC and usability studies. The iPod Classic as it stands now is almost exclusively a music box rather than what I used to have which was a library of books. I do have music on my iPod but I rarely ever listen to it; rather, I spend hours each evening and in the early hours listening to various books some in audible.com format some that I've converted myself from CD or cassettes and so on
This is without a doubt the most completely non-user-engineered downgrade to an otherwise sterling product line that I've ever seen.

I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?

    Yes, you can!(:
    STEP 1: Open iTunes
STEP 2: Navigate to the "iTunes Store". It can be found under the "STORE" tab.
STEP 3: On the right side of the store there should be a "Quick Links" Section. Click on the "Purchased" link.
STEP 4: Navigate to the "Music" tab and click on "All Songs". Then at the bottom of the screen there will be a button that says "Download All". Click the button and your songs will be begin downloading!
NOTE: This will only work with songs that you bought from the iTunes store, if you imported them from a CD, you will have to do it again.
NOTE: You can also do this with Apps, Movies, TV Shows, and Books.
NOTE: You may have to sign in with your Apple ID to verify the download.
Hope this helped! Enjoy your music!(:

  • IPod Classic and iTunes 10.5.x

I've been monitoring the iPod Classic forums for over a month now, trying to get a feeling of whether to upgrade my Windows 7 system to the latest iTunes (10.5.x). I'm interested in the update for the security fixes, but have been wary ever since iTunes 9.
I'm impressed with the folks that answer here, and have attempted to summarize my observations regarding the common questions in this post in my journal. The impression I'm getting, at least from the support questions and answers, is that iTunes 10.5 is iffy. I'm seeing lots of questions where iTunes (apparently 10.5) seemingly hangs in the middle of a large transfer (usually due to an interaction with the anti-virus software), and ends up corrupting the filesystem on the iPod Classic, requiring a restore and a retransfer of all files. Further (especially a concern for folks like me with over 26,000 songs), that transfer needs to be done in small chunks.
So, my question to the experts on this forum (turingtest, planb77, bilbo_cheshire, and all the other good folks here) is: Is my impression correct? If I have no need to use the cloud (which doesn't work with the iPod Classic) and if iTunes 10.4 is working fine, don't f---  with it.
Secondly, does anyone know if Apple is aware of these interactions, and is it likely to be fixed in a future version. My fear, of course, is that the iPod Classic is a dead iPod classic playing, and there won't be Apple support for a device with the large storage capacities.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.
