Classic app wants to open with Automator

Today I found the CD for an upgrade to one of my old Classic applications and decided to install it. The installer seemed to run fine, but the new version shows as “Application”—not “Application (Classic)”—in the Finder’s Info dialog, and can’t be chosen to open anything with (including itself). Trying to run it, whether by double-clicking or from the OS 9 Launcher control panel, opens it in Automator instead. I have verified that its Type and Creator codes are the same as its predecessor (the former is APPL), likewise for the other properties reported by GetFileInfo, and I’ve rebuilt the Classic desktop database to no effect. My other Classic programs are still recognized as such.
Any ideas how I can get the system to recognize it as a Classic application?

I believe I’ve solved this. The updated app version—and its filename—ended in “.0”, while the previous ones had non-zero final digits. The instant I removed this ‘pseudo-extension’ from the name (after dismissing a warning dialog), the Finder changed its description to “Application (Classic)” and the program now launches from a double-click. I guess “.0” must be an extension that Automator uses for something or other.

Trying to install firefox for first time. Computer asks "what program do I want to open with". I have tried a few guesses, but nothing works. What program do I need to open with?
    Thanks

You can remove the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\) manually if you can't uninstall.

  • Apps won't open with new system on ipad

Certain apps will not open  with the new update operating system

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

  • My application wants to open with another application

I have never had this problem before and can't figure out how to correct it. When I went to my Photoshop 7.0 folder to open Photoshop, I saw that that application icon was NOT the usual icon for Photoshop. This was also true for ImageReady. They appear as blank sheets of paper. They will not open either application.
When I click on the Photoshop Icon to get info, it says that it is an application (Power PC) - and lists the correct version etc. Under Name & Extension it lists Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Here is where it gets odd - the Open With window is there and is set to Script Editor (2.1.2) It also gives me the choice of Automator Launcher.app, Automator.app, Easy Card.app and Microsoft Language Register. The same is true for Image Ready. Of course this window option shouldn't be there at all. I trashed the entire program and reinstalled
and the same thing happens. I checked my backup on an external drive and it has changed. I use these programs all of the time and this just happened in the past week. I just can't figure out what happened or why. Can someone please help me get this resolved. Thanks.

Hi RLS_NJ, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If it still doesn't work try Reset Launch Services...
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
    Reboot.

  • How do I remove apps from the "open with" menu in Mountain Lion?

If I right-click a document in Finder, I get a contextual menu offering all of the potential applications with which I might open that document.  My problem is that some of those applications are no longer operational and I want them to be removed from the menu.  How can I do that?

I'm not sure how the order is determined. Clearly, the first level sort is ascending by application name these days (since Lion, I think), but it seems to be random after that. It's not by version, though that would be convenient.
Also, I notice that on my relatively clean Mountain Lion system I sometimes get duplicate entries in the "open with" list that cannot be explained by duplicate copies of the application. On a text file, I get two each of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Equation Editor, Evernote, and Xcode; none of these is duplicated on this system. I get only one entry each for the Notepad stub application, a few Adobe apps, TextWrangler, Safari, Numbers, Pages, and several others.
Where there are duplicated entries, it doesn't seem to matter which one I select; I get the same instance of the program no matter which I select. I take this to mean that one is an alias for the other.
That's my mystery and not necessarily yours. Are your "unhelpful but working stub applications" also duplicates?

  • How do we add apps to the 'Open With' contextual menu?

After I updated to Mavericks, all of the apps, except the Apple ones, were blown away (eg. Word and Excel in my VM).
How do I put them back?

'Open With > Other' would not show the apps in my VM.  I tried.
I tried something different.  I left Word open in my Parallels (Vista) VM and ignored it for a while to see if Maverics would pick it up eventually.
    It did.
It seems like that it takes some time for Maverics to find the apps in a VM before we can use it in the 'Open With' menu.

  • Duplicate apps in the "Open with-" menu

Hi, I have this small and annoying problem... Randomly, some programs seem to duplicate themselves in my "Open with..." menu.
For example, if I try to open a JPEG, Firefox will show this behavior. Any idea?

Do you have another copy of Firefox floating around on a mounted volume or in the Downloads folder?
I don't think it is Launch Services database problem since all apps are not duplicated.

  • Old Apps appear in Open With list

After backing up my data to another hard drive, erasing the target hard drive and doing a clean install of Leopard, I see that when I option-click a file, then select Open With, the list of applications include the apps on my backup hard drive in addition to the apps I have installed on my main drive.
I told Spotlight to exclude the backup drive but alas, only after indexing of both drives have finished.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can cure this?
    Thanks!

There's a registry entry that has to be changed from the previous version of Photoshop you had installed, presumably CS4. Do a search ("Find" using regedit) on the registry for "Photoshop CS4" (or your previous version, if any). Once you find it, change the entry to "Photoshop CS5" -- making sure that the complete pathway to Photoshop CS5 is accurate (correct it if it is not).

  • Installed CS6 trial but still want to open with CS4

I recently installed InDesign CS6 (Windows) as a trial, but I still want InDesign CS4 to be the default for opening documents. However, when I go to the Open As menu, ID CS4 does not appear. When I browse through Program Files and select C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\InDesign.exe, it points me to ID CS6. Which is incredibly annoying, since the program I selected was Definitely not CS6.
So is there a way to force Windows to associate indd files with CS4 instead of CS6 without uninstalling the trial?

You can edit the registry manually (there are directions in some other threads here, if you search), but that will cause trouble when you start working in CS6 since all of the new files will open with "Missing Plugin" errors that cannot be resolved since CS4 can't open files from anything newer.
I open the correct application first, then use File > Open... instead of trying to use a double-click, but you can purchase the Soxy plugin from Rorohiko.com which will intercept the open commands and automatically use the version from which the file was saved if it is installed.

  • Duplicates and non-existent apps in the "Open with" list

My "Open with" list is a mess for nearly all kinds of files. I'm not sure how I could clean this up or edit it. Look at the image below for example. I have some idea about how this happened, but no idea on how to fix it.

That's LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Some apps won't open with iPhone 5, ios 6

Is anyone else having problems opening certain app with the new iphone 5 running the ios 6 software?  They open for a few seconds and then close immediately.

    I have the same problem
Below are what I did a few days ago and might had led to the problem
I transferred my purchases to iTunes and synced them --> no problem
I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 --> no problem
I installed "the little crane that could" version 4.4 --> starts but hangs
Updated "the little crane that could" to version 4.4.1 --> crashes and never starts
Removed the app to reinstall again --> not on App Store (knew later that Apple removed it for this bug)
Installed again from my synced apps on my computer --> starts but shuts down unexpectedly
Now all my apps shut down unexpectedly including App Store, Contacts, and even during phone calls voice is muted for a second and I get back to home screen. I thought that this usually happens when I am connected to either WiFi or cellular data but I found it happens even in Airplane mode.
I tried all the options I found on the Internet like
    Restarting iPhone
    Rebooting iPhone
Removing and Reinstalling the App (now it is back to App Store after fixing the bug)
Closing all open apps by double clicking the home button
Deauthorizing, then Authorizing my PC and syncing
    Downloading a free app
I did not try to restore my iPhone because I do not want to lose my data and because some people said it did not help

  • ITunes app won't open with the new iOS7 update...what do I do?

Tried opening itunes app, it comes up for a second then closes, not sure what to do...

    Hello Gigi,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the iTunes app after upgrading to iOS 7.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPhone:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the iTunes app, I recommend restarting your phone and then resetting if it's still not working:
    Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPhone:
