Classic freezes upon startup

Hi Folks,
Using Mac OS 10.4.4. I tried to start up classic. The window appears and it gets to the "Mac OS 9" "Welcome to Mac OS" screen. After reading a previous post i tried to turn of the extensions but found that it had already been done. So, I of course tried to turn them back on but it still didn't work. It's been like this for some time so I dont know what might have been the initial cause.
Thanks for your help!

Does it load any extensions?
I have seen it get almost to the end of the progress bar, quite timely, then just stop and hang there.
If that is it, you need to throw away the Apple Menu Options control panel.
Just a sec.... do you mean start up (boot) in OS 9, or start Classic within OS X... this cure is for starting Classic within OS X.

• I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

• Laptop freezing upon startup

Last night, I was playing an online game, when my entire computer locked up for about 5 minutes. After this, a blue screen popped up, however instead of doing the normal "Physical Memory Dump" most Blue Screens do, it merely told me something had stopped working, then my computer restarted, but nothing would load besides my cursor and a solid black screen.
I gave this until today to try to work on it, and it would load my desktop background and programs, but it would freeze after about a minute or if I tried to click on anything. I can only run my computer in safe-mode (which is where it is now). I have tried virus scans (norton stops working mid-scan), registry repairs, defrag, and other various methods but I have yet to fix this issue upon startup in normal mode. Does anyone have anything else I can try, or have had a similar experience? Any input is greatly appreciated

• I movie 09 freezing upon startup of progam

I have i movie 09 and have been using it successfully without any problems for over 6 months. During that time, I have been working on a movie. It is currently 45 minutes long and includes sound effects and songs that I have added from garageband. I recently added a voiceover from Garageband, via i tunes and now the whole projects freezes on startup, i cant even access any of the functions.
Could it be:
1.i tunes incompatibility, either i movie or itunes needs an update, or both?
2. Movie is too long?
3. Problem with i movie..
I still have another 30 mins of the movoe to complete and want to be sure that I can continue to edit this film at a later date. I would also like to store it on an external drive, but have read in other posts that this is not as easy as it sounds. Has anyone had the same problem, or can offer any assistance here.
lots of work has gone into this project and would hate to lose it so far into the project.
at the moment, I have not upgraded any program (i movie, i tunes, garageband) in fear of losing any of my projects, should i be fearful.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

See if it will open with a new blank library.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes. Choose new library. Name it something like Test so you can find it easy later to delete it.

• Freezing upon startup

i just got a new desktop from my ex a couple weeks ago, it was his step-father's who built the entire thing himself. For about a week now it's been randomly freezing on me and when i try to restart it it freezes again when it gets to the screen with microsoft xp and the blue bar scrolling across right before the desktop loads. I have tried everything but the last few days i can't get passed that screen at all. I have no idea what to do.
Thank you!

There are a few other things you may want to look in to
1. HIPS, if you have a host based intrussion prevention system installed (usually built in to most firewall software) it could be causing your system to crash if a critical process was accedently set to be blocked.
2. Some times the intengrety of your windows kernel can get corrupted which can cause the system to crash when certain system calls are being made.
Although the problem could be hardware related, ie bad memory. If you can I would maybe try to install a second copy of windows on the box to see if that also crashes when loaded. IF it does, there is a good chance you have a hardware issue if not, it may be an OS issue that can be resulved by re-installing windows. Unless you know what you are doing I recommend having someone who does do the windows install if you are worried about losing any data by accedently formatting your drive during the install.

• Firefox freezes upon startup, cannot change any settings

Since yesterday my Firefox will not open anymore.
It started with a problem concerning all my browsers; I could open them, click inside them, but whenever I'd start typing anything, they would freeze. I'd get a 'Not Responding' message and I'd have to close the programmes. However, a restart fixed this for Chrome and IE. Firefox got worse after that; whenever I open it now it won't even load, I immediately get a 'Not Responding' message and I'm forced to close the programme. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
All support articles here suggest clearing cache and all that, but I can't do anything because it just immediately freezes.

There are two things you can try. But first, holding down the shift key
starts Firefox in Safe Mode. This disables all your add-ons and some
settings. If the browser works find in safe mode, then the problem could
be an add-on. But first do this. Go to '''''[https://www.mozilla.org Mozilla.org]'''''
to download the latest version of Firefox. DO NOT UPDATE. Get the full
installer. After you download the installer, remove Firefox using the
windows uninstaller. Then run the FF installer you just got. You will
not lose much of anything. Now try FF normally. If you still have problems,
then you will need to reset the browser. This will remove ALL ADD-ONS,
and reset ALL SETTINGS to their default settings. If the problem is
gone, then it was one of the add-ons. Re-install your add-ons only a
few at a time. Close FF, and restart after each group. Good Luck.

• LG enV Touch freezing upon startup

Similar to every enV Touch owner ever, I've had the reboot issues, signal issues, etc. Now (as of this morning), I can't use it for more than 20 seconds before it freezes, and I need to take out the battery and reboot to make it work. I found if I put it in airplane mode, it works fine, though it kind of takes away the main function of the phone. I already had to replace it once, and not looking forward to doing it again. Help?

• IPod classic freezing upon song transfers?

(Did a quick search to no avail of this specific transfer only freeze problem)
Purchased a used 80gb Silver iPod (6th Gen) which is in good shape and no dings. It had about 7 songs on there that I erased and and reformatted/restored to Mac instead of previous Windows.
I began transferring some songs, works fine for a random percent of the amount transferring (say 100, it will freeze on 25 and not show any progress for HOURS if I leave it). iTunes will be "Not Responding" and I am forced to then pull out the iPod physically to get thigns back to working status on the computer.
I somehow have managed to weasel on 1gb of songs but it is just such a pain now especially since I've tried methods of transferring 5 songs at a time and even then, it will hang on the 2nd of 5 songs causing me to pull out the iPod and the data not being retained at all!!
Through this process since acquiring the iPod, I have updated everything I can to the newest version and have no idea what to do. I am running it on a iMac G5 Dual 2.0ghz with Mac OS X 10.4.11. My previous iPod 8gb Nano (3rd Gen) had no problems at all.

Aw no response but 60 views
I'm really stuck. Any help greatly appreciated! Has downgrading worked for anyone? Or is there any alternative program to load files onto the iPod or is there a manual way to do it?
I've tried using iPodDisk app and also going into hidden folders but wasn't sure on how to arrange the folders for new music files seeing as iPod management is a bit wierd/randomized in there.

• Firefox freezes upon startup; forced reset everytime.

Hello, all,
I'm currently running Firefox 25.0.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on a Dell XPS 8300, 64 bit OS. Recently, everytime I start up Firefox, it freezes automatically without my clicking anything. I'm then forced to hold down the shift key, while clicking the Firefox icon, in order to reset the browser. I've uninstalled/reinstalled it a few times, but the problem persists. I believe it might be a script issue, but can't be certain. This scenario plays out everytime I start my computer, which really puzzles me that I need to fix it everytime. Any ideas?
Thanks,

• Qosmio G30 freezes upon Norton Internet Security 2008 startup

Norton Internet Security 2008 will freeze my computer as soon it tries to load and the only way to go on is to restart the system by pressing the on/off-button.
My notebook is a Toshiba Qosmio G30-177 (Model No. PQG32E-02G022GR) with Vista Ultimate and NIS2007 pre-installed. I have no problems with this NIS2008 version on my other notebook (Qosmio F10 - PQF10E-02300JGR, WinXP MCE).
NIS2007 runs fine on my G30 and I do not have any problems at all, but newer versions of NIS seem to get in conflict with my system:
1. I am able to install and run the new version, download all updates and adjust the settings. Maybe one or two days later my computer will freeze after start exactly when the tray icon of NIS appears. For a couple of seconds there is just no response of the system at all and the LED's of my notebook show that all HD activity has stopped. After being idle for these couple of seconds, the cooling fan will start to operate at maximum power, creating a tremendous noise I never experienced before, not even while the CPU was running at 100% for some time due to other programs. Forcing a restart is all I can do.
2. Now this time, I successfully restarted my notebook again (took some attempts) and it suddenly did not freeze. Then I disabled firewall and auto-protect permanently, so there was no freezing upon startup and I just had to manually activate both firewall and auto-protect after start. In order to prevent freezing again after reboot, I always disabled NIS before shutdown. For the next one or two days this workaround was quite successful.
3. All of a sudden, after one or two days, this workaround is going to become useless, because the system starts to freeze again at the very moment the tray icon appears. In this case, restarting has no effect at all, and NIS will continue to freeze at startup. I also tried to prevent NIS form starting by no longer allowing ccApp.exe to automatically run upon start (administrative tools > system configuration > "startup" tab). This is successful and my notebook is able to start normally, but if I later try to start NIS manually, it will freeze again.
I had this problem since NIS2008 was just released, so I thought that meanwhile a Windows or Norton update might have fixed the issue, but this weekend I gave NIS2008 another try without success. I am almost sure that the problem is not caused by any other software than Windows and/or Norton, because I also tried to install NIS after a full system recovery, thus having only pre-installed NIS2007 and Vista on my notebook. I did use the Norton removal tool and followed the deinstall instructions before trying to install the newer version of course.
My last hope was that the NIS2009beta version somehow would not freeze my system, but it does. It does not matter if I try to run 2008 or 2009beta version, the problem is exactly the same.
What really drives me almost crazy is the fact that NIS runs perfectly for some time, then needs a rather small workaround, and then after some time totally refuses to work. In these couple of days I did not change any system settings, install or deinstall any programs or did anything that I felt could conflict with NIS...
So far, I have no idea of a solution and have to use NIS2007 again.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

Hi !
I use NIS since 2001 and never had any serious trouble with this software.
There could be some compatibility problem, but I don't think that Vista is causing it, because otherwise a lot more people should have the same problem. Even the installation of all current Windows, NIS and Qosmio updates did not solve it. Of course I tried to get help using Symantec's Support and their user forums, but without success. This problem seems to be a rare one (unfortunately for me). I tested the NIS2009beta and even though it's a new version, the PC freezes again when this program starts. And this made me think that maybe a service or setup by Toshiba causes the problem and other Vista users are not affected. It's a strange thing that the pre-installed NIS2007 version is running fine...
Cheers,
Mario

• Photoshop freezes on startup reinstalling didn't help

Photoshop freezes upon startup- reinstalling didn't help but I didn't remove my old version should I have?

Here is one search result for this forum using the first few terms of your posting title:

• Classic freezes or stalls when started in OS X 10.4.6

Hello,
The classic environment freezes or stalls when it is started from OS X 10.4.6. In the expanded classic window pane, the smiling mac on the grey background appears, then the "welcome to Mac OS" appears (Mac OS 9.1). The blue progress bar at the top shows only a small sliver of blue on the left, and the progress bar does not advance at all. After many minutes, 10 or 15 so the classic window closes, perhaps a time-out limit, and has not started.
Mac OS X 10.4.6 was just recently installed on our Mac G4 from CD (4 CDs) rather than the OS X DVD, since we only have an internal CD drive. Our Mac is a 733 MHz PowerPC G4 (2.0) with 1 CPU; 512 MB SDRAM, 1 MB L3 cache, and 32 GB of available disk space. Let me know if other details would help with a diagnosis.
I have tried the suggestions given in the other forum articles that talk about the classic envirionment freezing or stalling such as:
blessed the Mac OS 9.1 system folder,
rebuilt the desk top,
removed the OS 9.1 servers folder,
turned off extensions in the classic options,
disconnected all external devices,
searched for the DivX folder, but didn't find it.
Are there other things I should try to permit classic to start from OS X?
Other forum articles seem to indicate that starting up classic in OS X allows older software to run in OS X. Is that true, or am I missing something?
By changing the start up disk to OS 9.1 the Mac will boot up directly to OS 9.1 (the previous OS used for many years) without any problem. Our current work around for older applications is to change the start up disk and boot up directly to OS 9.1.
Your advice and help is appreciated. My goal is to be able to start the classic Mac OS from OS X to run old applications like MS Office. Thanks for your help.

Greg
Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) classic freezes during start up

Hi Robbie,
Thanks for your reply to my question. I'll try to describe how I start classic in more detail. I have tried starting classic from the top menu bar icon (and from the classic system preferences form), and by trying to directly start an OS 9 application (like Word or Excel).
When I launch classic from the top menu bar icon a new window opens with the "smiling mac" on the grey background followed by the "welcome to Mac OS". At that point nothing else happens for a long time (no progress bar movement, no other forms or windows opening), in excess of 10 to 15 minutes. If the classic form closes after the long wait, the classic system preferences form still has a "start" button, so I presume that classic has not started. OS 9 applications do not start at that point. Should the progress bar move while classic is loading? I'm pretty sure that the blue progress bar in the classic window never moves, even when the classic window closes.
When directly opening an OS 9 application like Word or Excel the classic window opens, but again no change to the progress bar and the classic window stays open for a long time. The OS 9 application does not start.
Does this description help? Let me know if I can provide more details of what happens. I would be glad to try any tests you suggest, and report on the outcome, to help diagnose this problem. I can also try upgrading to OS 9.2.2; can you point me to an easy way for that upgrade? I'll check around the apple web site too.
Since the Mac can be booted up directly to OS 9.1 or OS X (by selecting the startup disk) it seems like there may be something that is interfering with classic being launched from OS X. Perhaps there are other files or preferences that can be disabled or removed in hopes of removing the interference and gettting classic to launch?
Thanks again for your help with this classic start up problem.
Regards,
Greg

• 17-inch, Mid 2009 mac book pro freezes on startup

My MBP occasionally freezes on startup.
it is a 17-inch, Mid 2009 model details as follows
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
The problem first occured before upgrading to Lion, but does seem to be getting progressively worse.
I start the mbp, get the login screen, enter login and password succefully, and get the opening screen appropriate for my login...
BUT am unable to select anything or perform any actions except using the on/off button to turn the mbp off, when its turned on it usually logs me in succesfully and then behaves as normal until the next login or the one after that ...
Anyone have any ideas what might cause this or if there are any known cures?
Thanks

Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

• Classic freezes after opening a Microsoft osX app

I'm still running Quark 5 under classic (classic boots on startup and quark is a startup item) and if I then open a Microsoft App in X and click back on Quark all I get is the spinning watch icon. (I think this has only started happening since upgrading to 10.3.9)
If a force quit Quark and restart it it then freezes on startup. Force quiting classic and thus restarting both solves the problem. Subsequently restarting any Microsoft apps doesn't affect freeze classic it only happens on the first run of the program.
I have turned off all Microsoft extensions in classic incase there was a conflict but to no avail. I have also slimmed down classic to the bear minimum for Quark to print and work with Suitcase.
Has anybody experienced this before?
(Machine spec is G41gz 1.25gb ram)

Please be very clear it does not "boots classic into osX…" when you log in, or at any other time and although of course that makes no difference to anything when all is well, at times like this thinking like that can make solutions much harder to find.
OS 9 is an old operating system. OS X is a new operating system. Either of them can boot older Macs, and they behave very, very differently.
Classic is not an operating system and it cannot boot anything. Classic is an "environment" - if you like, an emulator or interpreter - which allows a cut-down version of OS 9 to run on top of X so that newer Macs which can't boot in 9 can still run applications meant for 9.
When you hit problems, that matters for two reasons. Firstly, 9 in Classic behaves very differently to pure, bootable 9 and secondly, since 9 in Classic is running on top of X, all kinds of extra things from X might be contributing to the problem.
Provided you can find the disks, reloading Classic on an X Mac should take a lot less than the 20-odd minutes you might need to re-load pure bootable 9 on an older Mac.
Distiller should not come into the sequence "classic boots on startup and quark is a startup item) and if I then open a Microsoft App in X and click back on Quark all I get is the spinning watch icon…"
If "word always seemed to pause for too long on start up during "optimising the font menu" (or whatever the wording is in the splash box)…" are you saying that behaviour is now different? What, that Word no longer pauses but now immediately freezes, or something?
That would tend to suggests a Word or Office, rather than a System problem.
Either way, if it wa my Mac I'd first disable all the Startup Items in both X and 9, and see what happens when weverything is launched manually, in different sequences.
To disable Classic or pure 9 Startup Items, move the Starup Items folder from inside System Folder onto the Desktop.
To disable X Startup Items - helpfully renamed Login Items as the thinking is different - take them off the list in System Preferences>Accounts>(your account name)>Login Items.
With all those items disabled, Restart and manually launch, say, Word. What happens this time?
